JAMES ROWBERRY I would like to begin by offering you all a warm welcome back to Rodney Parade for this Friday evening fixture.

This concludes an intense week with tonight being our third fixture in just six days after trips to Stevenage and the long one up to Carlisle which we made on Tuesday night.

I want to thank all of you who made the effort to travel to Stevenage and Cumbria. Your support is certainly really appreciated by me, the staff, players, and the club.

It’s been a great week and touching on last Saturday first, I thought the players once again demonstrated the fantastic character we have within the group, getting a really pleasing three points (in difficult conditions) away at a team who are battling with everything they’ve got to stay in this division. This was continued on Tuesday when the players were brilliant in earning our second consecutive away win in a tough game at Carlisle.

Maximum points from our 2 away fixtures this week is a really pleasing return and the way the boys went about it is even more pleasing. Scott Bennett made 250 appearances for the club recently and I was delighted for our Skipper, Matt Dolan, who made his 200th appearance at Carlisle.

I would like to pay a special mention to all my staff who have worked so hard over the past few weeks, they ensure the players are prepared to the best possible standards within the resources we have and that has, without doubt, contributed to our recent results. The players and I are grateful for their efforts and application.

This evening will prove to be another competitive game. I want to welcome Graeme Lee, the technical staff, directors, players and supporters from Hartlepool United and hope they have a safe journey to and from Rodney Parade.

We are now inside the final nine games of the season and there’s still lots of points to be gained. We head into tonight with Hartlepool as our sole focus, not looking beyond them until this game is gone. We continually keep discussing about “staying in the moment” which we all must do and focus on the task in hand.

The fans were absolutely brilliant during our recent run of home games and backed that up with great support on our two trips this week. I hope you can once again turn out in numbers and support the boys under the lights tonight. It really adds to the energy the boys on the pitch when Rodney Parade is rocking. You really are our “twelfth man!”

AMBER FROM THE ATTIC WITH CHRIS SHINGLER

Friday night football makes a welcome return to Rodney Parade this evening as we welcome Hartlepool United to Newport once again…

It, of course, gives us a chance to once again raid an old box of programmes and, in doing so we can take a look back at our clash with thePools that took place on Tuesday 26th October 1976, a game that ended in a 1-1 draw.

That ‘76/77 season will always be remembered by older fans as the original “Great Escape” season (I’m guessing all visiting fans will remember our second one in 2016/17!) and for the less celebratory fact that our home strip was changed from our beloved amber (or tangerine) and black to blue and white stripes! Being honest, as a 14-year-old schoolboy back then, I don’t recall too much protest over manager Jimmy Scoular’s unpopular decision. I could only imagine the uproar in these social media driven days if a similar thing happened today!

Our 16-page, fifteen pence-priced‘Blue Note’is something of a standout effort in any County fan’s programme collection; and I generally mean of the sore thumb variety. This edition opened with ‘Blue Talk’ which was presumably penned by editor Richard Shepherd. The background to the opening few months of this season was one of huge financial crisis; trust me, the global one we experienced in 2008 had nothing on our version!

Richard opens with the well-worn proverb “It never rains but it pours” and explains that the previous Friday we had hosted Swansea City and had not only gone down 0-2, but the 5,000-plus crowd that was expected failed to materialise due to the heavy rain that fell that afternoon and evening. Nevertheless, the club was “Extremely grateful” to the 3,416 that had turned up.

It’s also explained that for the first time in years, we had no photographs of the game as the club photographer had to failed to take any printable photos due to the

downpour and eventually gave it up as a bad job ten minutes from time.If all that wasn’t quite enough, well, after the match Somerton Park was hit by a power cut!

In ‘Personal View’ on the same page, County supporter Ernest Johnson of Llanvaches, near Penhow, had his say on the current situation; the long-term fan believing that the media had brought our troubles into the public’s consciousness. He was confident the good people of Newport would rally around and save the club but noted how many people had got out of the habit of coming to matches.

In ‘Club Call’ we had two pages devoted to our visitors.

win so far in the league and were in fact bottom of the pile with us in 19th position. Caretaker-manager was Billy Horner, who had taken over from Ken Hale who had left in September. Speaking of gaffers, there isa special mention to Len Ashurst who, as their player-manager, had celebrated his 32nd birthday in March 1971 with not only Pools’ opening goal in their 2-0 win at Somerton, but two goal-line clearances in their first away success in 15 months! Little did we know at the time that Len, who by then was at Sheffield Wednesday, would go onto become the Ironsides’ most successful manager just a few years later.

The first adverts of the issue briskly make their presence known on page six and, like the vast majority, are from Cardiff-based firms; this I suspect was due to our Commercial Manager at the time, one Alf Buckley, having previously held a similar position at Cardiff City.

Page number seven brought us ‘News on Four’and details of that Hartlepool win, 2-0 over Rochdale, along with other salacious snippets such as informing us that Exeter hadn’t scored for three matches since forwards Alan Beer and Tony Kellow had been out injured. Aside this piece was ‘Time Ride to ‘51’where an October the 20th(1-1) draw at Eastville against Bristol Rovers was seen as a “useful” result. An impressive 17,396 had crammed into the charming old ground where a monstrous Ikea store now stands to witness George Beattie scoring our goal.

The Cardiff theme continuesin the middle pages too.

As a direct consequence of that rainy, no photographic snaps Swans match, we had instead chosen four photos of our recent signing from the capitol side of Don Murray, a Scottish centre-half who went onto play just 21 league and cup matches for us, and they are all snaps of him with a bluebird on his chest!

A long-forgotten signing is featured on page 11 in Chris Egan; an “Eire born winger” who had joined us from Derby County in August. Brian Clough himself had signed Chris, who only made seven appearances for us, for £9,000 from Sligo Rovers. Chris, it appears, was impressed by Jimmy Scoular’s work ethic, not only on the training pitch but also painting the dressing rooms in the close season. According to Tony Ambrosen’s biblical‘IronsidesA Lifetime in the League,’ the Limerick-born Chris left us due to

his wife’s (Kathryn) illness.

The ‘Commercial Scene’delivered the usual sponsorship opportunities as well as a feature that would be heavily frowned upon today in ‘County-Bounty Girl,’ where 22-year-oldValmai Rees is resplendently pictured. Val, hmmm, naturally is from Cardiff and along with our abhorrent change in colours, I’m beginning to spot a bit of a theme running here. Her favourite “Countyman” was Gary Bell, a former (ahem) Cardiff player!

To slightly balance things out, all but one of the adverts on the last few pages represent either Newport or Gwent-based companies and the one that isn’t is from Gil Reece,the former County player who was now a successful central heating engineer based in Cardiff. We’ll forgive that one, Gil. By way of summing up, this match ended 1-1 and Eddie Woods pilfered our goal. Shockingly, we had only won once ourselves; a 2-1 win at Somerton over Aldershot in September and would have to wait until March 4th for our next league two-pointer,when a 3-1 victory over Southport kick-started Colin Addison’s and the new board’s rein at Newport County; the first tentative step towards that epic great escape.

BOARDROOM A warm welcome to all the Directors, Players and Officials of Hartlepool United for this evening’s EFL League Two home fixture.

We’d like to welcome Caerleon Junior Youth FC as our team of the evening. They were formed in 1988 to support the soccer development of children living in and near Caerleon and are now one of the largest and most successful youth soccer clubs in Wales with around 300 young players registered. Our Charity tonight are the Wales Air Ambulance Charity who provide emergency air cover for those who face life-threatening illness or injuries. From the four airbases (Caernarfon, Welshpool, Llanelli and Cardiff), a helicopter can be anywhere in Wales within just 20 minutes. The on-board critical care consultants and practitioners have some of the most pioneering medical skills and equipment in the world, so patients receive A&E standard care at the scene of an incident.

The club were saddened to hear of the passing of former Chairman Richard Ford. Richard was Chairman of the Club during the late 70’s and early 80’s and oversaw the Clubs promotion to Division 3 together with the winning of the Welsh Cup in 1980. We will mark Richards passing with a minute’s applause before tonight’s game.

ongratulations to Academy scholar Sonny Lewis who took part in last weekends charity bike ride. Riding alongside former Welsh Rugby International Player Alix Popham Raising money and awareness for Head for Change Charity.

Well done to all involved!

Another Congratulations also goes out to Harrison Page on his recent call up to the Welsh colleges squad and playing in the Centenary shield cup game vs Northern Ireland in Belfast. Not the result the Welsh boys would have wanted, but a fantastic experience none the less.

The Young Exiles were in also league action last Saturday, taking on MK Dons at the Academy.

With the scholars taking a well deserved 3 points through another Jack Karadogan goal. He’d previously scored a Hat Trick in a 5-2 win over Sutton United the week before and his recent form has seen him gain a call up to the first team squad. Keep it up Jack!

We also celebrated International Women’s day earlier this month with our Girls players all being invited to attend the first team game vs Bristol Rovers. The girls had a great day and a few lucky players even got to meet County Goalkeeper Nick Townsend.

oalkeeping Coach James Hollman, Wife Hayley and Daughter Lauren Are Running London Landmark Half Marathon for Diabetes Charity JDRF On Jan 16, 2020, our 10-year-old daughter, Alexandra was diagnosed with diabetes type 1.

The day of her diagnosis is one we remember vividly. It was a trip to the doctors for reassurances about stomach pains, fatigue and a general feeling of being unwell and within 5 minutes of seeing the Doctor, we were told it was type 1 diabetes. An hour later we were in Cardiff’s Heath hospital learning about the condition and how to inject insulin.

To say the diagnosis was a shock is a massive understatement and the range of emotions we all felt were huge. The level of anxiety we felt due to the lack of understanding of the condition and subsequent fears for the future could not be put into words.

Alex spent that first night in hospital with mum Hayley. This was initially so that her blood sugar levels could be brought back to acceptable levels but also so she could begin her new regime of blood testing and injecting insulin.

It was a mad and scary 48 hours. On the Thursday everything was normal - eating, sleeping and general day to day activities as you would expect, to suddenly everything changing on Friday evening. Alexandra was pricking her finger for blood, testing that blood and then manually injecting insulin 5 times a day. We had to monitor blood levels with changes of activity, at mealtimes and as parents we had to be up

monitoring her bloods during the early hours.

Yet at this point, it really didn’t sink in that this is it! This is the rest of her life.

That first 48 hours left us feeling like we had a mountain to climb knowledge wise. We knew so little and the more we learnt the more we realised we didn’t know and the more daunting it all became. So much information must be taken onboard in such a small period of time and it was very overwhelming.

It is now two years down the road and we have come a long way. Alex has full independence in managing her condition and no longer has to test blood or manually inject because she now wears a sensor and a pump which work in tandem to continuously monitor her blood glucose and inject insulin as and when required.

We have successfully navigated our way through the past two years, Alex’s life is just about as it was before the diagnosis and there is no doubt that would not be possible without the help from the NHS and in particular the assistance of JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). Their advice, help and reassurance throughout what was an extremely worrying time was invaluable and we can’t thank them enough.

To show our appreciation for their assistance we will be running/jogging the London Landmark Half Marathon on the 3rd of April to raise money so that they can continue both their research and the brilliant help they give to all those in extremely scary early days of a diagnosis.

COUNTY IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE PRIMARY STARS GIRLS TOURNAMENT On Friday 4th March County in the Community headed to Cardiff as part of the Premier League Primary Stars’ Regional Girls Tournament, competing against other clubs from across South Wales and Southwest England. A team of 8 girls from Caerleon Lodge Hill Primary School represented Newport County AFC and they were handed a tough group draw, up against Swansea City, Cheltenham Town, Swindon Town, Forest Green Rovers and Torquay United.

At the end of the group stage the girls managed to top their group, putting in some brilliant performances - winning 4 out 5 games, scoring 21 and conceding just 4 in the process! Topping the group led to a semifinal match against the runners-up of the other side of the draw, Bristol City, and another solid performance

saw Caerleon Lodge Hill pick up another 2-0 win, progressing to the final.

Having done superbly to get this far, the girls came up against a very good Bristol Rovers team in the final. A strong start saw us take an early lead, only to be brought back level just after half-time. A really competitive end to the game saw the girls take a 2-1 lead late on, holding out for an impressive win and to take the trophy back to Newport as champions!

We wanted to say a huge congratulations and thank you to the girls, everyone was a real credit to Caerleon Lodge Hill Primary School, County in the Community and Newport County AFC! We can’t wait until May, where the girls will have the opportunity to compete against Premier League clubs at Watford’s Vicarage Road Stadium. Da iawn merched!

E COMMUNITY EFL EVERY PLAYER COUNTS PROGRAMME Mike Pratt and Morgan Pratt regularly attend the Serennu Children’s Centre where they host sport sessions in partnership with Sparkle, to children with disabilities and developmental difficulties.

The ‘Every Player Counts Programme’ was set up to provide opportunities for children with disabilities and development difficulties to participate in activities which not only promotes a healthy and active lifestyle but allows the children to try a wide variety of games in a fun, safe and judgemental free zone.

It was originally a 2-year programme funded by the EFL but has been extended to June 2022 because of the pandemic. We have returned to face-to-face delivery over the last 8 months. At the sessions we work with different age groups over an eight-week period delivering football-based activities, as well as a wide range of other fun games and different types of sports.

Since starting delivery at the centre, we have developed up a fantastic rapport with the Sparkle Appeal staff. A special mention to Sara Filer - who is the Sparkle Leisure Team Leader who has supported us throughout, including the challenging times of Covid. The programme has been well received in Sparkles Youth Club and Skills groups and County in the Community has received positive feedback from all participants and staff.

County in the Community regularly supports Sparkle’s charity days and recently invited a few of the children over against Tranmere Rovers. Cody who is already a massive NCAFC supporter, and Jack who had never been to a game before. Jack loved it and had a great time and now he wants to come to all the remaining home games.

The Trust was originally formed in 2001 and took a controlling stake in the football club in October 2015 following a community share issue which saw County supporters raise a magnificent £236,000 in just a month.

Since then, Newport County AFC has been a supporter-owned, community-based club.

The primary purpose of the Trust is to provide funding to the club. Our aim is to donate at least £100,000 a season to the club.

As well as being owners of an EFL club, Trust members receive a range of benefits depending on their membership tier. All members have guaranteed priority tickets for cup matches.

IN THE BEGINNING …

Football in the area dates back to 1881 with the formation of West Hartlepool Amateur Football Club. The club enjoyed considerable success, culminating in the winning of the prestigious FA Amateur Cup in 1905 by beating favourites Clapton at Shepherd’s Bush in London. The success inspired many to dream of a professional club, with Hartlepools United formed three years later with the intention of bringing together the neighbouring towns of West Hartlepool and ‘Old’Hartlepool under one footballing banner. West Hartlepool were dissolved in 1910, with their assets and liabilities taken over by North Eastern League Hartlepools United, who eventually joined the Football League as founder members of Division 3 (North|) in 1921.

HIGHLIGHTS

United’s first 26 seasons as a Football League outfit brought just six top ten finishes, though under the management of South Shields born Fred Westgarth, the club enjoyed a resurgence in the mid 1950s, culminating in a runners-up spot in Division 3 (North) in 1957, just four points behind champions Derby County. Previous seasons had seen fifth and fourth place finishes and hopes were high of promotion in this ‘one-up’ era, though sadly 69-year-old Westgarth passed away following a serious illness and successor Ray Middleton was unable to build upon the progress as the side gradually split up.

The legendary Brian Clough famously cut his managerial teeth at United, despite his claims that he did not ‘fancy the place’ when he took the job in 1965 following a successful spell as Sunderland youth team coach. Perennial strugglers Hartlepools had finished in the bottom two in four of the past six seasons, but 30-year-old Clough and assistant Peter Taylor led the club to eighth place in 1966-67 before departing to Derby County.

Hartlepool – they dropped the ‘s’ in 1968 – were of course ‘victims’ of our Great Escape in 2017, though their four seasons in the National League ended in the most exciting style in June 2021 at Ashton Gate with a 5-4 play-off final penalty shoot-out victory over Torquay United. Hartlepool supporters experienced almost every emotion in the mid-summer sunshine at Bristol, as they were denied a regular time victory courtesy of a 95th minute equaliser by Torquay goalkeeper Lucas Covolan. The penalty drama eventually unfolded with Blues keeper Brad James pushing Matt Buse’s spot kick onto the bar to seal a Football League return and cue scenes of wild hysteria among the travelling Poolies.

DON’T MENTION

•R e-election! Newport County were no strangers to the annual ‘cap-in-hand’ procedure to the Football League member clubs in the event of a bottom four Football League finish, with 10 applications, including four from the Fourth Division. Crewe Alexandra and Rochdale also managed 10, with Southport and Barrow notching up 11 apiece, and Halifax Town accruing 12.

However, this evening’s visitors managed a record 14, including 11 from Division 4 and three from Division 3 (North).

• The fateful end to the 2016-17 season, which brought euphoria to Rodney Parade following Mark O’Brien’s last gasp winner v Notts County and despair to Victoria Park, where an 83rd minute goal from Devante Rodney had secured a 2-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers and seemingly ensured safety prior to OB’s intervention. For County fans of a certain age, there was sympathy towards Hartlepool, whose path as a club had followed a similar trajectory to Newport’s during the struggles of the 1960s and 1970s, and many were delighted to see their return inequally dramatic fashion eight months ago.

Hartlepool have enjoyed a promising first season back in the EFL, with manager Graeme Lee settling the ship following the departure of Dave Challinor to National League high fliers Stockport County in November, two months after signing a new threeyear contract at the Suit Direct Stadium. Nine days ago, United came agonisingly close to a first-ever Wembley appearance, in the Papa John’s Trophy, losing a penalty shoot-out to League One championship chasing Rotherham United.

Hartlepool United chief operating officer Stephen Hobin believes the club are moving in the right direction off the field with the success of Pools’ cup runs undeniably helping the cause.

Appointed in the summer, the former Preston North End and Norwich City employee has played a leading role in landing a number of commercial and sponsorship deals during his time to help influence the club’s stance and provide solid financial support, including the stadium sponsorshipagreement with Suit Direct.

With£150,000 in prize money from the Papa John’s Trophy, alongside a similar sum for their run to Round 4 of the FA Cup, Hobin outlined the importance of these sums to ‘The Hartlepool Mail’: ‘You can never budget for that, so everything we get above the earlier rounds when you are a League Twoclub is a real bonus.

It is a big help financially and we need to make sure, as a board, we reinvest that wisely and help the club get stronger and grow.

It is not short-term thinking like it potentially was in the past. We need to stop covering over the cracks with short-term solutions and the added finances can help us be strategic and look to the next two or three years of the plan.’

MANAGER’S VIEW

Graeme Lee talking to ‘BBC Radio Tees Sport’recently on the task ahead of the games against Bradford City and County: ‘We want something to play for. We are delighted with the points tally we have got to, but we still want to make sure we get points on the board as quickly as possible.First and foremost, we need to make sure that we get the right points to stay in this league and then it is where we end up. I don’t want to fizzle the season off. I want to keep pushing and see where we end up. We have games on Tuesday and Friday which are going to be massive for us and that will give us idea of where we are going to be and what we have to play for. Everyone I spoke to about the Rotherham game (in the Papa John’s Trophy), people coming from Middlesbrough to the game, all messaged me to say how much they enjoyed it.They will not be following just Middlesbrough now; they have got two clubs in Pools because the atmosphere is fantastic. They were impressed with the way that we played.We have been getting over 5,000 fans at home and the noise they’ve been bringing is immense but if we can add a few more to that then fantastic.

Played youth football for Norwich and had loan spells at King’s Lynn and Lowestoft Town before signing for Grimsby in July 2017. He was released at the end of 201718 and spent the next season with Braintree, then in the National League. A year later he joined Pools and at first contested the shirt with Mitchell Beeney. Last season Ben played 29 games for the NL promotion side and this term he is a near ever-present.

In his second spell with Pools.

The veteran can play across defence and midfield and made more than 250 appearances in a six-year stay from 2006 after coming through the youth ranks at Middlesbrough. He moved on to Notts County and played every minute of his first campaign, equalling a club record. After stints at Bradford City, Chesterfield, Carlisle and Walsall he returned to Hartlepool in 2019-20.

05 Timi Odusina

Right wingback in his second season with the club who joined from South Shields in December 2020. Jamie came through the youth team at hometown Newcastle United to play three league games and also played on loan in the EFL with Coventry in 201617 and in two later spells with Crewe. He became a key player in last season’s promotion side, converting his shoot-out penalty, and has now passed 50 games for Pools.

Born in Croydon and signed his first pro contract with Norwich City in 2016. In January 2019 Timi signed on loan for AFC Fylde, then in the National League.

He made eight league appearances and was a part of the side that lifted the 2018–19 FA Trophy after beating Leyton Orient. He then joined Hartlepool and after impressing on loan he signed permanently at the start of last season, going on to help win promotion.

Another with a background at a top regional club. David was with Sunderland but before that made six Conference appearances for Darlington. He went on loan from Wearside to Boston United in Conference North in 2013-14 and then spent 18 months with Blackpool. Despite starting 2015-16 as captain he was freed at the end of the season and dropped back into non-league with Shildon, the new Darlington and York.

Joined Pools on a free transfer from Salford City ahead of last season after ending 2019-20 on loan, after an earlier loan to Woking. Mark was a scholar at Burton Albion and joined Ilkeston without making a senior appearance, but he did make the Brewers’ firstteam bench. He moved on to Alfreton in Conference North and then Salford, where he helped win promotion to the National League and then to League Two.

07 Omar Bogle

12 Joe Grey

England C cap who came to prominence with Solihull Moors where he won Conference North Player of the Year and the Golden Boot in 2014–15. Omar then helped Grimsby win promotion to League Two. After a stint at Wigan he joined Cardiff City in 2017 and was loaned to Peterborough, Birmingham City, Portsmouth and ADO Den Haag in Holland.

He then played for Charlton and Doncaster and joined Pools in January.

Winger or forward who started his youth career at Cramlington Juniors and the renowned Wallsend Boys Club before joining Hartlepool. Joe was part of the squad that won promotion to League Two last season. Not turning 19 until May, he is already closing in on 50 appearances for the first team in all competitions.

08 Nicky Featherstone MIDFIELDER

Club captain. Now 33, Nicky is about to pass 300 league games for Pools in L2 and the National League. He signed in 2014-15 from Harrogate Town, then in Conference North, having started the season on non-contract terms with Scunthorpe. He came through Hull City’s youth structure to play eight EFL games and had loans to North Ferriby, Grimsby and Hereford before joining Hereford permanently, then Walsall and Scunthorpe.

10 Luke Molyneux MIDFIELDER

Came through the ranks with Sunderland and made his debut in May 2018. After a few games as a sub early in 2018-19 Luke went on loan to Gateshead, then to Hartlepool where he made 16 appearances. After his release

by Sunderland he signed permanently for Pools in June 2019 but he then lost half the curtailed season to an ankle injury. He was a late sub in last season’s playoff final and netted a penalty in the shoot-out.

11 Marcus Carver STRIKER

Made a late return to the EFL in the January after being one of the most consistent scorers in non-league in the Northwest with Southport (16 goals in 31 appearances) and Chorley (38 in 160). From Blackburn, Marcus came through the junior ranks at Accrington Stanley and played here in County’s first game back in the EFL in 2013. He went on loan from Stanley to Marine, Halifax, Barrow, AFC Fylde and Chorley.

14 Gavan Holohan MIDFIELDER

Came through the ranks with Kilkenny City in Ireland and was picked up by Hull City in 2008.

After four years with the Tigers but no first-team appearances he joined Alfreton Town, then returned home to join Drogheda United. Moving on to Cork City, he helped win the FAI Cup and the President of Ireland’s Cup. Next came Galway United and when they were relegated Waterford, before he joined Pools in 2018-19.

15 Jake Hull DEFENDER

Twenty-year-old centreback on loan from Rotherham United where he signed his first professional contract ahead of last season, before spending a month on a youth loan at Matlock Town.

Jake scored on his senior debut for Rotherham in the EFL Trophy in September while simultaneously on loan at Guiseley in NL North. He returned to Rotherham in January and was loaned to Hartlepool the same month.

16 Neill Byrne DEFENDER

Summer signing with extensive National League experience, most recently making 40 appearances last season for FC Halifax Town. Neill was a youth player with Nottingham Forest and won four Irish U19 caps, then made a handful of appearances for Rochdale. He went on to be a regular for Telford - helping win promotion from Conference North - Macclesfield Town, Gateshead and AFC Fylde.

Summer signing from Chesterfield who has mostly been used in cup games. Martin began his career with hometown Sunderland and had a loan with Gateshead in the National League in 2014-15.

The following March he made his league debut on loan at Carlisle, before he spent a season each in the Scottish Premier with Kilmarnock and with Coleraine in Northern Ireland. He returned to join Swindon Town and then Salford.

Began his career with Stoke City before being released at the age of 15. He then joined the academy at Chester and progressed to the first team, making his senior debut in 2017-18 when he also spent loan time at Runcorn Town and Leek Town. Tom rejected a new contract at the end of that season and signed for Notts County. He went out on loan to AFC Fylde and then joined Pools in August 2020.

19 Jordan Cook

Most recently played against County for Grimsby Town in 2019-20. Jordan joined Pools from Gateshead last summer but as of the time of writing has made only a handful of first-team appearances. Turning 32 later this month, Jordan began his career in the Premier League with Sunderland in 2010. As well as a number of loans he went on to play substantively for Charlton Athletic, Walsall and Luton Town.

20 Reagan Ogle DEFENDER

Australian from Wollongong NSW who joined United last summer from Accrington Stanley, where he spent two years as a professional after coming up through the youth programme. Reagan was loaned out several times by Stanley and as well as a season and a half with Southport in 201819 and 2019-20 spent time with Ramsbottom United, Wealdstone, AFC Fylde and Altrincham.

21 Isaac Fletcher STRIKER

Nineteen-year-old on loan from Middlesbrough in a deal concluded in the January window. Isaac played under Pools boss Graeme Lee for Boro’s U23 team. He began his career at the Riverside at U10 level and turned professional in November 2020, and made a single appearance in the Championship last season . His younger brother plays for Hartlepool’s youth team.

Left back or winger with numerous caps for Antigua & Barbuda who signed last summer from Boreham Wood in the National League. From North London, he was in Tottenham’s academy but made his senior debut with Motherwell where he made 66 appearances from 2011-2015.

Zaine returned south to spend two seasons each with Kidderminster Harriers and AFC Fylde then one with Accrington and one with Boreham Wood.

28 Bryn Morris MIDFIELDER

On loan since January from Burton Albion. Bryn played youth football for Middlesbrough and captained England’s U17s. After loans with Coventry, York and Walsall he left the Riverside in January 2017 for Shrewsbury where he spent two years, including a five-month loan to Wycombe Wanderers. Portsmouth paid an undisclosed fee for his services in 2019 and he ended last season on loan at Northampton before joining Burton.

30 Joe White MIDFIELDER

Youngster also signed on loan in the January window, from Newcastle United. Joe is yet to make his first-team debut for the Magpies but has sat on the bench and has played for their U21 side in the EFL Trophy. Capped by England at U18, he joined Newcastle from hometown club Carlisle United in 2016 and was part of the U18 side that reached the FA Youth Cup quarter-finals last season.

31 Nicholas Bilokapic GOALKEEPER

Young Australian on loan since deadline day in January from Huddersfield Town. Nicholas, 19, shares understudy duties with another youngster yet to make his EFL debut, former Grimsby youth player Patrick Boyes. He began his career with Sydney United and joined Huddersfield two years ago. He made his senior debut earlier in January when Huddersfield won 2-1 at Burnley in the FA Cup.

GRAEME LEE

Appointed on 1 December 2021, Graeme previously coached Middlesbrough’s U23 side. He took over after Dave Challinor resigned to take charge of National League frontrunners Stockport.

Graeme started his career in defence with Pools in 1995, going on to play 225 league games and score 20 goals. He helped secure promotion to the then Second Division in 2002-03 when they were runners-up to Rushden & Diamonds. He then linked up with former manager Chris Turner at Sheffield Wednesday and also achieved promotion there when Wednesday beat Pools in the 2005 League One playoff final in Cardiff.

Next came Doncaster Rovers, where he helped win the EFL Trophy in 2006-07 and promotion via the League One playoffs the following year. He also returned to Pools on loan, playing three games in 2008.

Further spells at Bradford City, Notts County, Darlington and the short-lived Carlisle-based non-league side Celtic Nation brought a curtain down on his playing career. He captained Bradford in 2008-09 and won League Two with Notts County in 2009-10.

Graeme then joined Middlesbrough as a coach and worked his way up to become their Professional Development Phase Coach.
