JAMES ROWBERRY Good afternoon everyone and welcome to this afternoon’s game. I would like to also welcome Ben Garner and the rest of his staff at Swindon Town to Rodney Parade. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to address you all in this way, with our last home game coming almost a month ago, but my first match in charge here in front of a home crowd could not have gone better with a fantastic team performance in that 5-0 win over Stevenage. Since then, it has naturally been disappointing to exit two cup competitions, especially the Emirates FA Cup given this club’s proud recent history in it and it’s a competition that I have a lot of respect for, but I was really proud of how the lads played and how we responded to the brief setback. Last Friday’s win at Hartlepool United was a real test of this team’s character and to win it so late on was really pleasing. Me, my staff and the players would also like to thank the 114 who made that long trip up to the North East and we’re so glad we could reward you for your efforts, especially since we also had another long trip the previous weekend away to Morecambe. It was also a pleasure of mine to recently visit the academy and the community programme soccer schools as I value everyone’s hard work at the football club. The #OneClubOneCounty mantra is a really important one to me and, for this club to be successful, it requires every single member to be pulling in the same direction and working hard together. On that note, I will be in attendance at the Supporters’ Evening on the 25th of this month and I can’t wait to see you all there. It’s good to be home again after a fair bit of time away and I hope we can all have you smiling again at full-time. Enjoy the game, James O F F I C I A L M ATC H DAY P R O G R A M M E | 3

AMBER FROM THE ATTIC with Chris Shingler

A warm welcome back to Rodney Parade this afternoon as we host our M4 rivals Swindon Town, and in doing so, we turn back the pages of an old programme from their visit here nearly 41 years ago!

It was in fact Boxing Day of 1980 when the Robins flocked to Somerton Park for this Third Division fixture and our 25p tariffed‘Amber Note’is something of a treasure mine of information from that goldenera. The first two pages of the twentyat your perusal almost leave you breathless; there is just so much crammed into them! It’s our gaffer, the late Len Ashurst, who’s up first with his column and our bushybrowed general was singing the praises of our Wiltshire rivals, noting their proud history and ground that Len thought was capable of … “HousingSecond Division or even a First Division set-up.” He also picks out Alan Mayes, Brian Williams and David Peach as their standout players. Mr. Ashurst proudly records our home record in completive games from January 1980 to this Boxing Day, and it read Played 30,Won 18, Drew 7, with 4 losses. Not too shabby then and of course a promotion, Welsh Cup and European football had been achieved in that short time. Overleaf and Richard Shepherd had been busy in the Christmas build up compiling his ‘Inside Somerton’titbits of news. It seems

Karl Elsey wasn’t too pleased with a Sunday paper who referred to him as a Scot in their report from our recent clash with Barnsley; Rich pointing out that Karl was well and truly born in Swansea! There was news too that Tommy Tynan had become a father to twins whist playing for our Reserves at Ton Pentre! Apparently, the team coach dropped the ever-popular Tommy off at the Royal Gwent gates on its way back; and for the record, our Welsh League XI had won 4-0. Also worth a mention was our annual players visit to that very same h o s p i ta l w h i c h had taken place on December 17th where presents had been distributed to the excited children. took up the next few pages and many names in their squad will be remembered by both sets of fans, even in 2021, with the likes of Jimmy Allen, John Trollope, Andy Rowland, Glenn Cockerill and Paul Rideout all in their ranks … and I’ve not even mentioned Kenny Stroud, Roy Carter and Alan Mayes who all went onto don ouramber shirt in future years, not forgetting either the now well-known TV pundit and presenter Chris Kamara, who, incidentally was a very good player in his day and a player I always hoped we would sign, but alas it was never to be. The traditional ‘Look Back in Amber’ feature took an in depth look at our 4-1 win over Swindon in the 1957/58 campaign, with manof-the-match Pat Terry bagging a brace, ably supported by a Harry Harris strike and a Alf Sherwood spot-kick which proved enough to see off the then league leaders. There is a lovely piece on page seven where a letter is published from a former South Wales Argus journalist John Roche, who was now living in Singapore. After tellinghis old memoires of the club, that included writing in the match day programme and of his son Ian, who’s described as “County mad,”John goes onto explain his delight of hearing a match report direct from Somerton Park on the BBC World Service on the night of our European Cup Winners Cup clash with Norwegians Haugar! T h e re a d i n g m a tte r continues to come thick & fast, and following pages of Diary Dates, match photos and Commercial News, we then have a feature on two youth team players in Ceri Williams (15) and Neil Knight (16), who are photographed with Reserve team coach Brian Clark. Ceri, who was known to most as “Georgie,” after some chap

named Best, of course did make a few Football League appearances but sadly never really kicked on as a professional. However, what a non-league career he had, not only with us but with Merthyr Tydfil as well. Ceri remains a very popular player from our past and in some games under Graham Rogers during our 1994/95 Beazer Homes championship season,he was completely unplayable for baffled defenders as he plundered in goal after goal; 36 in all competitions! Neil sadly never made our first team but both lads in the piece were honest enough to know how hard it was to become a pro in the days long before Academies were thought of. With the printed league table not including the previous Saturday’s matches, due to the holiday deadlines, we weresat in 16th spot, but were possibly now slightly lower as we had lost by a single goal at Colchester whilst Swindon were perched in a lowly 23rd spot. However, they pulled off a great 2-0 win against us that day. To be fair, we had been enduring a little sticky patch with no wins in the previous seven games after our fine 4-0 win over Hull City in November. Weirdly enough though, or maybe even ironically, our next victory was again a 4-0 success early in January when we absolutely destroyed Sheffield United. Like the late Jimmy Greaves said once or twice “It’s a funny old game!” Swindon, who had goalkeeper Allen taken off with only half an hour on the clock, dug in deep but were

already one up thanks to that man Kamara. The festive loving Robins added a second on the hour though Russell Lewis. Come May, both clubs were in higher positions; we ended in 12thspot on 43 points while Town were only one point off relegation, although they had a much better goal difference than Chester, Walsall and Sheffield United with all clubs sweating on 41 points. Teams: County:Gary Plumley, Richard Walden, John Relish, Grant Davies, Steve Warriner, Tommy Tynan, Karl Elsey, Steve Lowndes, Dave Gwyther, Nigel Vaughan, Kevin Moore. Sub:Bobby Ward. Swindon Town: Jimmy Allen, Charlie Henry, David Peach, Chris Kamara, Russell Lewis, Kenny Stroud, Ian Miller, Roy Carter, Andy Rowland, Roy Greenwood, Brian Williams. Sub:Brian Hughes.

View from the

boardroom A warm welcome to all the Directors, Players and Officials of Swindon Town FC for this afternoon’s EFL League Two home fixture. Today’s game is our remembrance fixture, and we welcome our friends from the Newport Veterans Hub to mark the occasion. Director Bob Herrin and I recently joined a number of local dignitaries to open their new meeting place within Spytty Stadium. The group are providing valuable support to those veterans in and around the area. CEO David Watkins shared some of the work the group are undertaking and the importance of the work to the veterans and their families. The club is delighted it is able to play a small part in partnering with the group. In addition, this weekend is the FA, EFL and NSPCC ‘Play Safe’ campaign. We are lending our full support to ‘Play Safe’ - the nationally led campaign to raise awareness of safeguarding in football. We want everyone to be able to enjoy the game, without the fear of harm or abuse. As a Club we have worked hard to ensure that the recent recommendations from The Sheldon Report and safeguarding as a whole has become embedded within the DNA of our Club, to ensure that no one has to face the horrific abuse that has been endured

by so many in the game previously. We owe it to our young and vulnerable people in particular to ensure that football remains a safe space for them to embrace the game, to make friends and have fun, enjoying their time as part of the football family here at Newport County AFC. Thank you to the 114 supporters who made the long trip to Hartlepool. It was a great effort on a Friday night. Whilst it is a long way to go, the 93rd minute winner by Dom Telford made the journey home more pleasurable. Well done to Dom on being awarded League Two player of the Month. Well deserved! Finally, Caerleon FC will host a special memorial match on Sunday (21st) between Newport County AFC Legends v Shaftsbury Youth in memory of Rhys Griffiths who sadly passed away, aged 22, in 2006. The game kicks off at 1PM and all proceeds raised will be donated to Velindre Cancer Centre and Cancer Research UK. Thanks to everyone for the continued support. Good luck to the lads this afternoon. Gavin

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.

IN THE BEGINNING …

Most football historians accept that this afternoon’s visitors were formed in 1879as Swindon AFC by the Reverend William Pitt of nearby Liddington as an off-shoot of Spartans Cricket Club. The sporting cleric immediately declared himself captain of the fledgling club from the ‘old town’, who soon became known as Spartans, and four years later amalgamated with St Mark’s Young Men’s Friendly Society, a church team from the railway village of New Town Swindon. Records from 1883 refer to the club as ‘Swindon Town’ for the first time, and in 1894 they became founder members of the Southern League, moving into their current County Ground home two years later.

HIGHLIGHTS

Third Division Swindon famously defeated a flu-hit Arsenal 3-1 on a Wembley quagmire to secure the 1969 League Cup. Roger Smart put Robins’ ahead on that rainy afternoon in March, only for Bobby Gould to equalise for the Gunners with four minutes remaining. However, Don Rogers ensured that buying his own drinks in the Wiltshire town would never be an option with an extra time brace. The 76-year-old subsequently ‘did a John Macey’ and bought a sports shop in his adopted footballing home town, Don Rogers Sports, while the South Stand at the County Ground is named in his honour.Four months ago, he became Robins’ football ambassador, with a club statement commenting: ‘Swindon Town are delighted to announce that club legend Don Rogers is to become our first official club ambassador. Rogers sits among the greatest players to ever appear for the club - scoring 190 times in 490 appearances over two spells spanning more than 14 years.’ Robins won the inaugural Anglo-Italian Cup Final in the summer of 1980, though the match only lasted 79 minutes. With Second Division Swindon leading 3-0 against Napoli at the latter’s Stadio

W W W. N E W P O RT- CO U N T Y.CO. U K San Paolo home, courtesy of a Peter Noble brace and an Arthur Horsfield goal, home fans hurled concrete bench seats onto the pitch. Austrian referee Paul Schiller led the players off the field never to return with 11 minutes remaining, as police used teargas to allow the teams to return to the dressing room. Swindon’s lineup included Wales international Rod Thomas, who played three games for County towards the end of the 1981-82 campaign. It was a double for Swindon, who the previous season had won the Anglo-Italian League cup, a two-legged encounter with Copa Italia winners Roma arranged as ‘compensation’ for UEFA’s refusal to grant then Third Division Robins a place in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup after their League Cup Final victory over Arsenal. Robins reached the top tier for the first time in 1993-94 after Glenn Hoddle’s side defeated Leicester City 4-3 in the First Division Play-off Final. Unfortunately, Swindon – minus Hoddle who departed for Chelsea shortly after the Wembley triumph – won just one of their final 14 games to become the first top-flight side in 31 years to concede over 100 goals. It was a season to remember though for Norwegian striker Jan Åge Fjørtoft, who scored 12 goals for John Gorman’s side, including a hat-trick in a 3–1 win over Coventry City. Now 54, the 71-times-capped international is a journalist and an advisor to the Norwegian Football Association as well as a pundit for ESPN FC.

DON’T MENTION

• T he summer of 1990. While Newport AFC were celebrating promotion from the Hellenic League, Swindon were partying too following their Division 2 Play-off Final victory over Blackburn Rovers. Sadly, the champagne soon lost its sparkle, as Ossie Ardiles’ side were denied a first ever taste of top level football and relegated to Division 3 after the club admitted 36 charges of breaking Football League rules, 35 linked to illegal payments to players. The relegation was rescinded on appeal, though the following campaign saw Town finish one place above the drop zone. • S windon slipped into the Fourth Division for the first time in their history on ther final day of the 1981-82 campaign, courtesy of a 1-0 defeat at Newport County. Tommy Tynan sealed Town’s fate from the penalty spot after future County midfielder Roy Carter fisted away a goal bound Tynan effort. Deflated manager and club legend John Trollope reflected: ‘It was my worst experience in football. I did not speak to the press afterwards as I was so deflated going down to the Fourth Division for the first time in the club’s history.’

ROBINS TODAY Away Champions

Swindon are the League Two away kings, unbeaten and with six victories and two draws on their travels. They eliminated us from the Papa John’s Trophy 11 days ago at the County Ground, with a 57th minute strike from Australian born Jordan Lyden. The 25-yearold defensive midfielder is hoping that his goal and performance put him in contention for a squad place this afternoon, telling the official club website: ‘It is a patience game at the moment. We have a very big squad and quality players, so it is about biding my time.I have had many chats with the gaffer and the assistants about biding my time and waiting for my opportunity, hopefully I took that (in the Papa John’s Trophy) and fingers crossed I am back involved with the group against Newport.’

MANAGER’S VIEW

Former Bristol Rovers boss Ben Garner has made an impressive start since arriving in the summer following Town’s relegation from League One. He explained to ‘Sky Sports’ some of the challenges

he faced: ‘It is amazing how things change in football. People were talking about us dropping out of the Football League. We have a reasonable start and suddenly people are talking about how we should be getting promoted. The aim is to stay in the league, build strong foundations and allow the club to move forwards, improving in every area. We are trying to create an elite environment here. In terms of sports science, medical, nutrition and obviously from a coaching perspective, we try to give them the best possible. ‘There was a lot of damage that had been done. The owner inherited that and has set about putting that right by bringing some clear direction. I would imagine for the football club and the town, he has been a breath of fresh air, really. There has been a thread of positivity running among the local community. It is nice to see the impact that it has on people’s lives. The number of people who have come up to me and said they are happy to have their football club back, that is what it is all about.’

FANS’ VIEWS

There are eight pages on Swindon’s ‘Town End Forum’ devoted to this afternoon’s encounter, including a lively debate as to the validity of vaccine passes. Here is a preview, with thanks to the contributors named. ‘I quite fancy doing an away trip and this is a favourable one. Train is only £22.’ Looks like ‘4D’ will be one of the 1,000 plus Robins fans in attendance this afternoon. ‘Train station about a 10-minute walk, parking not too bad, plenty of side streets close to the ground.’ ‘swindonmaniac’ listing the positives. ‘Guessing this will need the vaccine passport, so likely to be slow getting in. Utterly pointless in my opinion and I hope it never comes in here.’ ‘theakston2k’ will presumably be arriving early. ‘There are people stating that they have been vaccinated but are not willing to show proof to Newport stewards as they are against health passports. Perhaps I am missing something but what’s the big deal?’ A Covid pass is clearly not a problem for ‘Bob’s Orange’ ‘As there’s been trouble over the years between the supporters, I would be surprised if they sold home tickets on the day, but I may be wrong.’ ‘Jimmy Quinn’ correctly advising no pay on the day. ‘Would have been good to have got McKirdy’s suspension out of the way, would have preferred him to miss Crawley than Newport.’ ‘swindonmaniac’ disappointed that last week’s international weekend postponement means no RP return for former County loan player Harry McKirdy.

THE COUNTY CONNECTION

This afternoon is the 97th competitive encounter between County and Town, with the series starting in 1919-20 in Southern League Division 1. Swindon are currently ahead with 41 wins in all competitions compared to County’s 31. Highlights from a Robins perspective include a remarkable 8-0 County Ground Christmas Day victory in Newport’s 1938-39 Division 3 (South) championship season, though the champagne was back on ice the following day as they lost 6-4 in front of a 20,586 attendance at Somerton Park! The six League Two clashes since County’s return to League Two see four Newport wins to a single Swindon success.

Club vice-captain. Londoner Jack began his EFL career with 77 appearances and 15 goals for Southend United, where he came through the youth programme. After being named 2015-16 Player of the Year he moved to Huddersfield Town, but he spent most of his time there on loan at Oxford, Blackburn and Bradford where he spent the 2018-19 season. He moved on to Lincoln City and joined Swindon ahead of last season.

He went on to a 400-plus game career at a dozen clubs. We most recently crossed paths when he was with Bristol Rovers - including the game in 2013-14 when the wind put a Lenny Pidgeley goal kick out for a corner.

On loan for the season from Aston Villa, where he helped win the FA Youth Cup last season. Kaine was one of a number of Villa academy players who debuted in the FA Cup against Liverpool in January when several first-teamers were isolating and who signed five-year professional contracts in July. He was called up to train with England’s U19s this time last year and was first capped by the U21s in September.

GOALKEEPER

17 Jayden Mitchell-Lawson MIDFIELDER

Started his career at Swindon’s academy and joined Derby County in January 2016 at the age of 16. Jayden made two Championship appearances for the Rams as a sub and another in the EFL Cup. 25 Louis Reed MIDFIELDER

He made his EFL debut off the bench under John Sheridan in December last year and was a key player in the U18 side that reached round four in last season’s FA Youth Cup.

MEET THE ROBINS HEAD COACH – BEN GARNER

Appointed in late July in new Swindon owner Clem Morfuni’s first move at the County Ground. In common with our own James Rowberry, Ben never played professionally but made an early start on his coaching qualifications. Now 41, he began as a youth coach at Crystal Palace from 2005 to 2012 and graduated to coaching the first team. He was part of the group that won promotion back to the Premier League in 2012-13. He then spent 2015 to 2017 at West Bromwich Albion as assistant head coach. Following a brief spell in the Indian Super League as assistant head coach under Steve Coppell at ATK in Kolkata, he took his first head coach role with Bristol Rovers in December 2019, but he left a year later after recording only six wins in 33 games. Ben took over with Swindon in a difficult situation, needing to rebuild the squad after relegation while under a transfer embargo and amid a protracted change of ownership. He hit the ground running with an attractive style of football which earned a nomination for the League Two Manager of the Month award in his first month in charge and Town continue to press for an immediate return to League One.

Through our work, we have been fortunate to meet so many children who we have helped deal with negative behaviour and who have gained strength, confidence, and resilience after attending one of our ZAP workshops. The workshops are about having fun but throughout the workshops, we deliver a set of Kidscape tools which we share with children in learning how to deal with and manage conflict and behaviour that has negative connotations and teach them that responding in a negative way, only serves to escalate the problem. When bullied, children lose all sense of worth, value, confidence, feel lonely and isolated and the pandemic has heightened the sense of segregation as children are unsure where they fit into previous friendship groups and as a result, feel distant from friends. Kidscape also deliver online ZAP workshops, as well as face to face which gives families a diverse way in which they can engage in our workshops. I am pleased to say that we can return to delivering our Community ZAP full day workshops in Newport on Monday 21st February 2022, venue yet to be confirmed, that we would encourage families to access, free of charge.

We’re backing Play Safe Newport County AFC is lending its full support to Play Safe – a national FA-led campaign to raise awareness of the importance of safeguarding in football.

Play Safe is being run in partnership with the NSPCC and has the full backing of the Premier League, EFL, Barclays FA Women’s Super League and the FA Women’s Championship. It’s also supported and being run across every other level of the game. The main element of Play Safe is a series of short films which emphasise the importance of clubs such as ours having safeguarding embedded in all that we do. The films also explain to parents/carers and children themselves know what to do if they feel unsafe or worried, because nothing matters more than making sure football is safe for everyone, especially children and young people. You can see these films on our club website and we’ve also broadcast them on our social media channels. “As a youth team coach, I will be working with my club to ensure we support the Play Safe messaging,” says FA Chief Executive Mark Bullingham. “I am also pleased that the campaign has the support of the former footballers with lived experience of abuse in football, who are on

our Survivor Support and Safeguarding Advisory Group. The Group has collectively said: “Learning from the past is crucial, so that we can prevent the horrific experiences that happened to us and so many others in football, from happening again. “As a group of survivors, we fully support the ethos and important messages that Play Safe conveys – whether to club officials, parents/carers and or vitally, children and young people themselves. Equally important is that Play Safe is not a one-off campaign – it will be used at key points in the football calendar to remind everyone in football, that children’s welfare and keeping them safe, should be at the heart of all that we do.” As the Survivor Group points out, you’ll see Play Safe appearing at various points throughout the season to keep safeguarding front of mind in football. Together, we want to do everything we can so everyone – particularly children and young people – has a consistently positive experience of our great game.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH

County forward Dom Telford was awarded the League Two Player of the Month after a stellar goalscoring streak in the month of October. Telford scored a whopping eight goals in only six games over the month of October, while also registering an assist, which unsurprisingly landed him the gong for League Two’s Player of the Month. His scoring streak started in the convincing 3-0 win over Scunthorpe on the 2nd of the month, although it was the 2-2 draw with Carlisle on the 19th where he truly became impossible to stop in October. A brace in that draw was followed by two more goals in a 3-1 win at Bristol Rovers and then he went one better in a 5-0 demolition of Stevenage as the 24-year-old bagged a hat-trick and also provided an assist to round off a sensational month. His manager, James Rowberry said of Telford getting the award: "I can't take any credit for [the form], that's down to Wayne [Hatswell, assistant manager] and the

guys that were here before me. He's scored a few since I came in against Bristol Rovers and Stevenage. "First and foremost he's a great, great lad. He's 24, he comes in every day with a smile on his face - I see him and he makes me smile and makes me laugh! He's a great lad and the lads love him. "He works every day, always wants to get better, he's always asking questions, asking me questions. He's engaged and he deserves. I know Dom will continue and that journey and continue to want to get better and better." Telford has also started November perfectly with a goal in the first game of the month coming late on in the dramatic 2-1 win over Hartlepool last Friday night. Fingers crossed he is on the scoresheet again this afternoon!
