We are heading into this game on the back of a frustrating defeat against Barrow last Friday and will be looking for another response this afternoon.

We had a good week of preparation in the lead up to the fixture, so it was disappointing in the manner that we lost because we got off to a great start through Finn Azaz’s first goal for the club.

I thought we were excellent in the first half and could have put the game to bed before the equaliser with the chances that we created, but we didn’t and we were punished. The second half performance wasn’t good enough and we’ve given away too many soft goals so far this season, which is frustrating because I know there is a good team in there. All credit to the 91 supporters who made the long trip to Cumbria on a Friday evening.

The club was saddened to learn of the passing of former manager Len Ashurst last weekend. Supporters still reminisce about Len’s achievements during his time at the club today and we will join together in paying tribute to him ahead of this afternoon’s game.

Former Exile Jake S crimshaw joined Newport County AFC on loan from AFC Bournemouth i n Ja n u a r y 2021 .

The young forward netted three times in 16 appearances for Michael Flynn’s side, helping the Exiles reach the League Two play-off final.

The 21-year-old returned to his parent club following the conclusion of the 2020/21 season and was sent out on loan to Scunthorpe ahead of the current campaign.

He scored on his Iron debut against Sutton United in a 1-1 draw at Glanford Park and has made five appearances so far for the club.

Jon ParkIN

Another experienced forward on the list of players who have featured for both clubs is Jon Parkin, who linked up with the Exiles in 2016 under Warren Feeney. The towering striker netted four goals in 11 appearances in all competitions before being sent out on loan to York City in January 2017.

Parkin’s most memorable goal for County came against Plymouth Argyle where he wonderfully controlled a goal-kick from Joe Day and fired home a stunning long-range effort, which won League Two’s #GoalOfTheWeekend.

In January 2011, Parkin was sent out on loan to Scunthorpe United from Cardiff City where he scored six times for the Iron in League One before having his contract mutually terminated with the Bluebirds.

PAUL HAYES

Former striker Paul Hayes achieved three promotions with Scunthorpe United, finishing second place in League Two in 2005, winning the 2009 League One play-off final and once again securing another secondplace finish in League Two in 2014.

Hayes made his County debut against Leeds United in the Exiles’ 2-1 FA Cup upset against Leeds United in January 2018 and netted twice on his league debut against Forest Green Rovers in a 3-3 draw at Rodney Parade.

ANDREW CROFTS

Former Wales and Norwich City midfielder Andrew Crofts played in each of England’s top four tiers before signing up with Scunthorpe ahead of the 2017/18 campaign. The experienced Welshman only made nine appearances for the Iron in all competitions before being released in the summer of 2018.

Crofts returned to Wales with the Exiles when Michael Flynn signed his former Gillingham teammate on a oneyear deal in 2018.

He went on to appear in 12 games for the Exiles, including coming on as a substitute in the League Two play-off final at Wembley Stadium against Tranmere Rovers.

boardroom A warm welcome to all the directors, players and officials of Scunthorpe United FC for this afternoon’s fixture.

Firstly, a thank you to those fans who made the long trip to Barrow last Friday. Whatever way you look at it and travel, it is a difficult place to travel to. It wasn’t the result we wanted but the support is very much recognised and appreciated.

The club was very sad to hear of the passing of Len Ashurst. Len was manager in one the most successful periods of the club, winning promotion to the Third Division, the Welsh Cup and then reaching the quarter finals of the European Cup Winners’ Cup. For those old enough to remember I am sure they will have fond memories. The club will pay tribute to Len at today’s game with the programme featuring a picture of Len and an article written by Chris Shingler.

Sincere condolences to Len’s family from everyone at the club.

Today’s fixture will be the first game where we are able to make use of the marquee and re-introduce our matchday entertainment. A warm welcome back to our partner Newport City Radio who will be

providing this afternoon’s entertainment along with our sponsors the Welsh Sweet Co, Bouncebackability and R&N inflatables. Great to have everyone back as we steer more towards normality.

It was good to see the first development game held behind closed doors this week against our friends from Yeovil. The game ended in a draw and was a good run out with a blend of academy lads and the development cohort against strong opposition.

Welcome to Noel Mooney, the newly appointed Chief Executive of the FAW, who joins us for today’s game. This week the FAW shared their new strategic plan 2021-2026 and I joined their webinar to learn more about the future direction. The FAW is a key stakeholder of the club and I look forward to further developing our relationship with the association.

LEN ASHURST

Newport County AFC was saddened to learn of the recent passing of the club’s former manager Len Ashurst at the age of 82.

Len led County to a double in 1980 - earning promotion to the third tier of English football and lifting the Welsh Cup - and guided the Ironsides to the quarter-finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1981.

Chris Shingler takes a look back on the life of a man who took charge of County during the most successful period in the club's history.

Born in Liverpool in 1939, Len joined Sunderland following a brief spell as a youngster with Wolves and went on to play over 450 times in the famous red and white stripes at left-back from 1958 to 1970. During that spell, Len helped the Roker Park club win promotion in 1963/64 from the old Second Division to the top-flight.

He also won English youth and under-23 caps during that time.

In March 1971, Len was appointed player-manager of Hartlepool on the recommendation of Len Shackleton, the former England, Newcastle and Sunderland centre-forward who had mentioned to Pools’ Chairman John Curry that he thought Len was of management quality. After four tough years at Victoria Park in which he had turned Hartlepool into a solid mid-table outfit, from regular re-election fodder, Len found himself at Gillingham but resigned during the 1975/76 season to take over at Hillsborough the home of Sheffield Wednesday. Despite a good ‘76/77 season when Wednesday finished eighth, Len was surprisingly dismissed after just 10 league matches the following campaign.

So, nine out-of-work months later, Len was relieved to answer a telephone call from out-going County boss Colin Addison, who

was moving to become assistant manager to Ron Atkinson at First Division West Bromwich Albion. He describes in his excellent autobiography ‘Left Back in Time,’ how Addison's voice was maybe the sweetest thing he had ever heard. It seems Colin had already convinced Chairman Richard Ford that Len was the man for the job…and he certainly wasn’t wrong.

Len cheerfully admits to being “transported back in time to Hartlepool” when he walked into Somerton Park for the first time and felt like after, “six years of graft in football management”, he was back to square one; however, he likewise acknowledged that most importantly he was back in employment, earning a wage and once more a member of that exclusive 92 Football League managers.

With all due credit to Colin Addison, a man who is equally adored and revered here in Newport for his two spells in charge, he had certainly laid a solid foundation for Len’s impending success, and what transpired over the next four seasons was simply incredible by our standards. Not forgetting too that Len actually turned down the chance in the summer of 1979 to go 'home' and manage Sunderland.

It took a few games of that first season (‘78/79) for things to begin to gel; in fact, six of the first seven games ended in defeat with the only victory coming at Wigan. Thankfully, following a fine 3-1 win at Bradford City, County started to climb the table and, more importantly, Len started adding to his already promising squad.

With the likes of Howard Goddard, Steve Lowndes, Gary Plumley, John Relish, Nigel Vaughan and Eddie Woods already at the club,

Len then brought in Neil Bailey, Dave Bruton, Grant Davies, Kevin Moore, Keith Oakes, Tommy Tynan and Richard Walden during that first season in charge; a season where the mighty West Ham United were humbled at Somerton Park in an epic FA Cup giantkilling in front of over 14,000 delirious fans. Things were definitely on the up and - backed by an ambitious board - the final piece of the jigsaw arrived in the spring of 1979 when, acting swiftly on a tip-off from his brother Robin about a fellow worker at the Ford Plant on Merseyside, the Ironsides paid South Liverpool FC £2,500 for John Aldridge.

The following season saw the club not only win promotion from the basement division for the first time, climaxing in a marvellous 4-2 victory at title-chasing Walsall on the final day, but also manage another ‘first’ in winning the Welsh Cup; a feat made more of an achievement by beating three Second Division sides in the process in Cardiff City (2-0), Wrexham (1-0) and Shrewsbury 5-1 over a twolegged final. When skipper Keith Oakes lifted the cup in front of over 3,500 ecstatic fans crammed in behind the goal in Shropshire, it also signalled that, for the following season, little unfancied Newport County would be rubbing shoulders with the greats of European football in the Cup Winners' Cup. We didn’t do too shabbily there either, when, following victories (over two legs) against Crusaders of Northern Ireland (4-0) and the Norwegians of Haugar (6-0), County suddenly felt the full media glare when pitted against crack East Germany side Carl Zeiss Jena in the quarter-finals. I won’t dwell too long on this fixture as we all know the story, but it’s testament to Len’s achievement that this is probably the most famous match the old club ever played and is still reminisced about fondly to this day.

After a solid 12th spot was obtained in the first season back in the Third Division, the second season at that level was inevitably a bit tougher, and two big-money signings in Alan Waddle and Jeff Johnson failed, by and large, to live up to their hefty price tags and Len was ultimately relieved of his duties in February 1982, being ironically replaced by Colin Addison. Due in the main to his loyalty in turning down Sunderland back in ’79, he received a much-deserved testimonial against Manchester City in March and later went on to manage Cardiff City (twice), as well as his beloved Sunderland eventually, who he took to the League Cup final in 1985. Len also had spells abroad working in Kuwait and

Qatar. In his book, he describes his spell in charge of the Ironsides as “probably the happiest time of his managerial career". During his time in Gwent, he also got the club involved in the local community, for example helping the young unemployed in 1980 by opening the club’s facilities one afternoon a week.

Many fans and former players took to social media to pay their respects to Len. Supporters’ tributes like one from Ian Hopkins often referred to him as the “best gaffer ever”, with Mark Vickery adding that Len had given him “the greatest time supporting the club.” Jay Wilford added that it really was a “sad day for all County supporters” with Rob Santwris calling him a “total gentleman,” while Noel James summed up what a lot of people will have felt in simply calling him a “legend.”

Amongst his former players, Steve Lowndes called him the “most successful County manager ever”, whilst goalkeeper Gary Plumley described Len as a “smashing, genuine guy” and added, “so proud to have been a part of his team". Writing on Twitter, John Aldridge said he was “really sad to see my first manager Len Ashurst pass away” and added he would “always be grateful for the opportunity and management he gave me". Winger Kevin Moore also paid tribute on Facebook and noted what a good management team he had forged with Jimmy Goodfellow and David Williams. Midfielder Neil Bailey also noted it was such a sad day and, like Aldridge, was grateful to be given his professional debut by Len, noting that the spirit and bond he created amongst the players still exists today.

However, the final word must go to Len’s son Roger, who along with his son and Len’s grandson Leo, still support the club home and away. Roger told me that his dad thought that great side he built in Newport could/should have been a top-half Championship side with the likes of Tynan and Aldridge in it and described that period as his father’s “most successful as a manager". Roger also noted how many people from the County and from the south Wales area in general became life-long friends as a result of his dad’s time in charge.

newport county afc ACADEMY UPDATE Newport County AFC is delighted to announce a newly-formed partnership with Carbon Fiit, which was founded by former defender David Pipe.

Pipe will now work with all Academy age groups from under-9s to under-18s at his facility in Pill each Wednesday.

Sessions will see the academy sports science team work in collaboration to strengthen the players physical profile, whilst also exposing them to the demands of being a professional football player.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to work with and learn from a County legend,” said academy manager Damien Broad.

“Pipey working with our young players will no doubt support, not only their physical development, but other key components of being a successful player and person in life.

“Pipey demands high standards on and off the pitch and when we met to discuss the partnership, I could see his passion and outlook on player development is perfectly aligned to what we want to achieve here at the academy.

“Helping the players off the pitch to become a better player on it, being respectful, working hard and having the right attitude are just some of the core values these sessions will instill in our young players, and this is another progressive step for the academy.”

Kayne McLaggon has joined the academy from the Football Association of Wales as part of the professional player to coach scheme.

McLaggon, who came through the Southampton’s

academy and represented the Saints in the Championship, has enjoyed a lengthy spell in the Welsh top flight with JD Cymru Premier Barry Town United.

He is part of the Premier League scheme to increase BAME (Black, Asian and minority ethnic) representation across football.

Newport County AFC academy was selected as one of six Football League clubs across the country to take part in the scheme.

Academy manager Damien Broad said: “We are delighted to have been selected for this programme and extremely pleased to be able to welcome Kayne to the club.

“He will work primarily across the academy age groups, however he will also gain experience across all areas including the first team and club operations.

“We are continuously looking to develop and grow across all areas of the club. This opportunity to be one of six partner clubs in supporting under represented ethnic groups is an exciting one and one which is another positive step for the club as a whole.

“From top to bottom, Newport County AFC is ensuring that embracing diversity is embedded across all areas of the club off and on the pitch, and the scheme’s support for our club will doubtless be a big benefit for us moving forward.

‘The Iron’ have certainly lost their shine in recent seasons, with 2018-19 relegation from League One followed by finishes of 21st and 22nd in the bottom tier. Manager Neil Cox knows that reversing the sequence is crucial this term, though last weekend’s home defeat at the hands of Port Vale dropped them into the bottom two of the fledgling League Two table.

IN THE BEGINNING…

With local clubs Brumby Hall and Scunthorpe Town falling by the wayside in the 1890s, two new clubs surfaced in the North Lincolnshire town either side of the turn of the 20th century.

First up was Scunthorpe United in 1899, while three years later North Lindsey United popped up in Crosby, just a stone throw from Scunthorpe’s Old Showground home. In 1910, with the rise of the iron industry, the new urban district of Scunthorpe boasted one of the fastest growing populations in the country and local football enthusiasts felt that the area would be better served by one ‘united’ football club. As such, Scunthorpe and Lindsey United was born and, in a further show of unity, an early club badge featured a five-link chain to represent the five villages and parishes of Ashby, Brumby, Crosby, Frodingham and Scunthorpe which combined to form the new urban district and borough of Scunthorpe.

HIGHLIGHTS…

Scunthorpe finally gained election to the Football League in 1950 after first applying for membership 29 years earlier!

Persistence finally paid off for United’s determined officials, who pointed to their club’s consistent performances in the prestigious Midland League. Tension was palpable at the League’s Lytham St Anne’s headquarters, as it took three rounds of voting before United finally emerged victorious ahead of Workington and Wigan Athletic as the ‘northern’ candidate in the Football League expansion from 90 to 92. Ironically, their first match in Division 3 (North) was against the ‘southern’ successful club, Shrewsbury Town.

The achievement was even more commendable as leading scorer Barrie Thomas was sold to Newcastle United midway through the campaign for a then stratospheric £40,000.

Iron have spent three seasons in the Championship this century.

Arrived from Hull City on a free on deadline day in January 2017 but ended that season on loan at North Ferriby, where he had previously been on loan from the Tigers. A product of Hull’s academy, Rory spent a loan with the Iron in 2015, covering a suspension. He initially understudied Matt Gilks at Glanford Park and became a regular in 2019-20 with 26 appearances, followed by 15 last term when he shared duties with Mark Howard.

Last featured against County in May’s playoff final when he came on as a sub for Morecambe in extra time.

Alex spent eight seasons on the Lancs coast before signing a one-year deal with the Iron. He was in Everton’s academy before dropping into non-league with Chorley and Lancaster City, followed by 40 appearances for Stockport County. He then clocked up 269 games for Morecambe, scoring nine league goals.

One of an increasing number of L2 players with experience in Scotland. Ross joined the Iron in July from Kilmarnock.

Just turned 27, the right back has made more than 200 senior appearances since starting out at Dunfermline in 2013. He moved on to Livingston and Clyde, where he had been a youth player, and then played 70 games for Queen’s Park. Then came two and a half years at Kilmarnock, where he played 24 last season.

Signed in February from Bolton Wanderers after playing five games on loan - his sole EFL appearance for Bolton was when County won there in September last year. The 27-year-old came through the academy at hometown club Leicester City and after several loans joined Burton Albion in 2014.

He was loaned from there to Cambridge United and went on to sign for Mansfield, then rejoined Cambridge after two further loans there.

Joined the Iron in July 2019, signing for the U23 squad following his departure from Huddersfield Town. Left back Mason, 20, had signed for the Terriers at U14 level from Hunslet Boys and featured in Republic of Ireland training ca m ps. H e ca pta i n e d Scunthorpe’s U23s in 201920 and last season was his breakthrough campaign with 31 appearances across all competitions and a call-up to Ireland’s U21 squad.

England C cap signed in August 2020 from Dagenham & Redbridge, going on to make 28 appearances.

The strong-tackling, ballplaying centreback was a trainee with West Ham and went on to sign for Brentford, then impressed on loan in League Two with Cheltenham Town. Manny then joined Rotherham before 63 games for Dagenham where he was named in the National League’s team of the week three times in 2019-20.

Also able to play out wide, Devarn joined Blackburn from Burton Albion as a trainee. He moved on to Hednesford and Stourbridge before Tranmere, then in the National League, paid a fee for his services, and joined Southport in 2018. Last season he scored three in 40 appearances for the Iron.

Signed on a free from Sheffield United in January 2019. Jordan came through the Blades’ academy to make his senior debut in the EFL Trophy in November 2016, which was his only firstteam appearance. He was prolific from midfield for their U18s - netting 60 across two seasons - and went out on loan to Southport in National League North, Norwegian second-tier team Viking FK and Chesterfield in the National League.

Signed from Tadcaster Albion in January 2020, initially for the U23s. The former Doncaster Rovers player made 50 appearances for Donny in all competitions between 2016 and 2019, scoring three including one against Scunthorpe. Alfie also had a brief loan from Doncaster to Chesterfield.

He made four appearances as a sub before the 2019-20 season was curtailed and last term was his breakthrough with 42 games and five goals.

Signed in August 2020 from Yeovil Town on a two-year deal and played 28 games last season. Before Yeovil, Myles had spent five years in Scotland. He is a former Brentford scholar and went on to play for Southall, Tamworth, Hayes & Yeading, Burnham, Livingston, Falkirk, St Mirren and Dunfermline.

While north of the border he won the Challenge Cup with Livingston and helped St Mirren win promotion to the SPL.

Former Tottenham and Leicester City forward signed in August 2020. Ryan signed for Spurs in 2013-14 after playing for Dartford and Ebbsfleet and first played in the EFL on loan to Stevenage and Exeter. In 2018 he joined Leicester, where he was a regular in Premier League Two and the EFL Trophy. In 2019-20 he scored six on loan at Carlisle and his debut campaign with Scunthorpe saw him score nine times in 43 appearances.

Joined the Iron in April 2019, signing initially for the U23 squad. Jai, who had been on non-contract terms at Leicestershire non-league side Barwell, penned a twoyear deal. The Nuneatonbased right back, who can also play in midfield, made his senior debut in March 2020 after a successful campaign for the U23s and went on to make 27 appearances last season, 25 of them in League Two.

He also made one substitute appearance for them this season in the Carabao Cup before moving to Glanford Park.

Signed on a two-year deal in August 2020 and was a regular in the early part of last season, but didn’t feature after late December.

Aaron scored prolifically for Basingstoke Town before signing for Luton in August 2017. In two years as a Hatter he was part of two promotions. He also had loan spells at Boreham Wood and Scottish Championship side Falkirk, before loans at Sutton United and Hemel Hempstead Town in 2019-20.

Fullback capped by both England and Northern Ireland at youth level signed in July from Blackburn Rovers, penning a one-year deal. Lewis joined Rovers from Manchester United’s academy and signed his first pro contract in March 2018. His first full season brought senior football via a three-month loan at FC United.

After returning to Blackburn he excelled for Rovers’ U23s, with a loan at Fylde which was cut short by the pandemic.

First-year professional who joined the club at U11 level in 2013 from Goole Town Tigers in his home town. Cameron is an attacking player, predominantly playing as a central midfielder or on the right wing, and has been a mainstay in the youth team.

Harry has played more than 200 senior games since starting as a trainee at Manchester City.

Next came Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premier and he was at York in National League North last season.

Signed a two-year deal to join United in July 2021 following his departure from Championship side Middlesbrough. Tyrone made one senior appearance for Boro and previously impressed for their U23s and in loan spells locally at Hartlepool and Darlington (twice) - the latter of which was curtailed by the pandemic.

Familiar to County fans after his loan last season from Bournemouth, when he netted three in six starts plus 10 appearances off the bench.

Jake began last season on loan at Walsall where he scored two in four + 10. Hailing from the Isle of Wight and turned 21 in September, he had earlier loans from the Cherries to Southern League Poole Town - when he scored nine in 17 games - and to National League side Eastleigh.

Tom turned pro in the summer of 2019. Formerly at Leeds United, he is a central midfielder who can also play right back. He made his senior debut as a substitute in the EFL Trophy in November 2018.

The 2019-20 season saw him make two more first-team appearances while also impressing for the Iron’s since discontinued U23 side. He appeared five more times in 2020-21 before signing a new contract in the summer.

The 29-year-old has made more than 300 senior career appearances after starting out at Crewe, w h e re h e h e l p e d w i n promotion to League One in 2012 and the EFL Trophy a year later. Harry’s second promotion came at Scottish Championship side St Mirren in 2017-18 and his third last season with Morecambe at County’s expense, separated by two years with Grimsby in League Two.

On loan from Middlesbrough, initially until January. Born in Redcar, Hayden joined Boro’s academy at U10 level and represented England U15s.

He signed his first professional deal two years ago and made his senior debut in the FA Cup third round in January, having already played for the U21s in the EFL Trophy. This was followed by his league bow on the final day of last season and he extended his contract in the summer.

Central midfielder signed in July 2021 from Wigan Athletic. Alex progressed through the ranks at Bolton Wanderers before signing for the Latics in 2018. He made two senior appearances for Bolton and also spent time on loan at Sutton Coldfield.

He was a key figure in Wigan’s development side and made his EFL debut early last season, going on to appear 25 times in total last term as he helped them survive in the third tier.

Season-long loan signing from Coventry City. This is Tom’s first EFL loan spell away from the Sky Blues. He has risen through the ranks at his parent club, making a breakthrough into the U23s in 2018-19 when he also went out on loan to local non-league side Barwell. He made his Coventry debut in the Carabao Cup early last season and last December was rewarded with a new contract keeping him at City until June 2023.

NEIL COX

Appointed in August 2020 to succeed Paul Hurst, who left the previous January. Iron stalwart Russ Willcox took caretaker charge before reverting to his role with the U23s, but left when the club decided to discontinue that squad at the end of last season. Neil turns 50 next week. This is his first full managerial role in senior football. He arrived from Notts County, where he was assistant manager to Neal Ardley. Hailing from Scunthorpe, he is well known to fans having come through the youth ranks at the club. He made 26 appearances as a defender before a move to Aston Villa in 1991 for a fee of £400,000. Neil won six caps for England at U21 and went on also to play at the highest level for Middlesbrough, Bolton Wanderers and Watford before ending his playing career with Cardiff City, Crewe Alexandra and Leek Town. He made a total of 652 senior career appearances and scored 42 goals. He started his coaching life with a management stint at Leek before a six-year spell as assistant to Neal Ardley at AFC Wimbledon. The duo then went on to manage Notts County.
