Where to Buy a Motorhome in South Wales by Newport Caravans When considering buying a used or second hand Motorhome you have a number of options available to you and it can be difficult to know where is the best place to buy a motorhome. Buying from a motorhome advert Whilst there are many genuine private sellers using online advertising to sell their used motorhome, there are also a number of scams operating around motorhomes, that have caught out many unsuspecting buyers.

Buying a motorhome from a private seller can grab a bargain. However, as they are selling directly themselves they do not have the overheads of providing a warranty or making good repairs to ensure the used motorhome is fit for the next owner. A bargain can soon become a “money pit” for the new owners.

There are a also number of scams relating to motorhomes, that start with an online advert. Usually the motorhome advertised is well below the market value, attracting a huge interest from potential buyers. The advert will have an image with a request that you contact them through a private email, rather than through the advertising platform.

After you have emailed that address you will then receive an email with some sob story on why the “seller” wants or needs to sell the motorhome quickly, and hence the low price. If you show further interest, or ask to see the motorhome you will receive an email explaining that either the motorhome or the seller is out of the country, but offering you the chance to buy the motorhome through a secure payment system, which will return your money if you are not completely satisfied with the purchase.

It may seem like an obvious scam, but research around the internet and you will find many, many people that have fallen for this type of scam.

To highlight the point, we contacted such an advert this weekend.

The advert on Gumtree (11th June 2016) was for a “2007 PEUGEOT BOXER Pioneer Frobisher Diesel” with low mileage of 33,000 miles offered for sale at £4,750 We were immediately suspicious of the adverts as the asking price is well below the market value of about £30,000.

In the interest of research, we played along and responded to the advert.

The first email was from a Dr. Kelly Wickens "Thank you for your interest in my 2007 PEUGEOT BOXER Pioneer Frobisher Diesel, 4Berth, 33000 miles, Full Service History. All documents in original folders. 2 key fobs. The campervan is in perfect condition, 4 almost new tyres, no accidents, no damage, scratches or dents. HPI clear and fully paid.

I am selling it at £4,750 because I've just finished the divorce and I am very glad that I took it, because it was my ex-husband’s most precious thing. He cheated on me although we have 2 kids together, anyway i don't wish to bore you with my life's story...

I don't ask to much for it because I just want to get rid of it ASAP, just want to erase a bad memory and I should get rid of it.

As you can see from the pictures my campervan is in perfect condition.

I am the registered Owner.

Dr.Kelly Wickens" A compelling story on why it is for sale, and from a Doctor no less. Again we played along and asked to see the motorhome and received this email: "I'm very busy with my job ( I'm a surgeon ) in a training program(medical stuff) right now, in Germany.

I will fly to UK only if I have a genuine buyer.I can't fly for all potentials buyers,this is the reason for using secure transaction.

The deal will be handled by escrow.com Using escrow services, you get free shipping, at your place in 48h.You will have a 7 days inspection. Or I can fly and meet with you if you wish.

In case the vehicle is not as i described, the transaction is canceled and Escrow will refund your money back in,immediately.

Escrow companies are supposed to be the safest way to do online transactions, particularly when dealing with Internet auction sales of expensive items such as Vehicle. eBay recommend to use this service for all transaction. We emailed we were no longer interested.

Another indication that this was a known scam is that, to their credit, Gumtree spotted this advert and removed it within 24 hours. Although, the same advert has been posted a number of times in different locations.
