ne date on the calendar just could not, would not, be canceled.

On the first Tuesday in November, in the middle of a pandemic, Americans will finish electing their next president, as well as a slate of national representatives, state officeholders and local leadership.

Snags in our voting systems have not made this unusual election any easier. And yet, Americans are already turning out in force. A record-breaking number of voters have cast their ballots through mail-in and early voting.

Even in a normal year, elections can be cumbersome. With that in mind, The New Political produced this nonpartisan Voter’s Guide to help you navigate your ballot. We’ve compiled information about the candidates, regardless of their political party, and the issues, so however you’re voting, you’ll feel confident in your choices.

This guide exists solely because of the tireless work of our staff. U.S. President & Vice President Democratic Ticket Former Vice President Joe Biden was selected as President Barack Obama’s running mate in the 2008 election, and then served as Obama’s vice president for two terms. Before that, he served as a U.S. Senator for Delaware and was first elected in 1972.

Biden, 77, was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He would be the oldest president in U.S. history, if elected.

Biden launched his presidential campaign in April 2019 after consistent speculation about his potential candidacy following his years as vice president. Though the campaign started off slow in the primaries, strong performances in South Carolina and the Super Tuesday primaries helped Biden secure the nomination.

Biden said he wants to offer free COVID-19 testing to all Americans, repeal President Donald Trump’s tax cuts, raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour, expand Obamacare, reform policing, codify Roe v. Wade into federal law and invest in green energy. He teamed up with former rival U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders and others to propose a plan to combat climate change and has proposed broad student loan forgiveness.

Sen. Kamala Harris, Biden’s running mate, has served as a U.S Senator for California since she was elected in 2016. She previously served as the attorney general of California and the district attorney of San Francisco. Harris, 55, was born in Oakland, California.

She would be the first woman to serve as vice president, if elected. Harris was also the second Black woman and first South Asian American to serve in the U.S. Senate.

In her time as a senator, she advocated for healthcare reform, descheduling cannabis at the federal level, increasing paths to citizenship for immigrants and an assault weapons ban. She has also expressed a desire to address our nation’s mental health crisis. Harris previously ran for president, but suspended her campaign in December 2019.

U.S. President & Vice President

Republican Ticket President Donald Trump, a Republican, has served as president of the United States since his inauguration in January 2017, after defeating Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. Prior to his tenure as president, Trump hadn’t held an elected office. He was previously a businessman and television personality. Trump, 74, is from New York City. He had no major opposition in the 2020 Republican primaries.

Trump, who contracted COVID-19 in October, opposes a national mask mandate, and has given states increased control over handling of the global pandemic. Trump has touted the developments of therapeutic drugs such as Regeneron and Hydroxychloroquine. He also said a vaccine would be available by the 2020 presidential election, although members of his administration have stated that the vaccine will likely not be available until a later date. Trump says if re-elected, he will continue to further diplomatic interests in the Middle East. In recent years, the Trump administration has established normalized relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, Sudan and Bahrain.

Early in his presidency, Trump began a trade war against China and put large tariffs in place, some of which have been rolled back. He also supported GOP tax cuts in 2017. He opposes Obamacare and is currently supporting a case before the Supreme Court to overturn the law.

Vice President Mike Pence is Trump’s running mate for a second term. Pence, 61, served as the governor of Indiana from 2013 to 2017. Before that, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives. In his time as vice president, he has also served as the chairman of the White House Coronavirus Task Force.

Pence has described himself as, "a Christian, a conservative, and a Republican, in that order," and is a supporter of the Tea Party movement. He supports overturning Roe v. Wade and has sought to defund Planned Parenthood. Pence opposes same-sex marriage, has voted against Obamacare, is a proponent of a flat federal tax rate and opposes raising the minimum wage.

U.S. President & Vice President Libertarian Ticket Born in Libertyville, Illinois, Jo Jorgensen officially joined the Libertarian Party in 1983. Jorgensen earned a bachelor’s of science in psychology at Baylor University, an MBA at Southern Methodist University and her doctoral degree in industrial/organizational psychology at Clemson University. Jorgensen has campaigned as a part of the Libertarian party in 38 states, running as a congressional candidate in South Carolina in 1992 and for vice president of the United States in 1996 alongside the Libertarian presidential nominee.

Jorgensen and Cohen’s ticket platform includes reducing regulations so that medicine, testing and treatment can get to those affected by COVID-19 in addition to reforming the federal government to reduce the United States’ incarceration rate. The platform also wants to preserve and save Social Security, remove the government from the student loan business, force higher education to offer affordable programs, and end the Department of Education and state education regulations to allow public schools to innovate. Additionally, their platform aims to cut government spending to lower taxes, make healthcare more affordable and replace coal and oil power plants with clean energy alternatives. Their platform also wants to end government shutdowns, remove barriers to job creation so that people can work and keep the United States out of foreign conflict. They support a free and open immigration policy.

Jeremy "Spike" Cohen, born in Baltimore,

Maryland, is the co-owner of Muddied Waters Media, a podcast platform that millions tune in to. Cohen hosts two live programs a week and has talked to many people from all parts of the political spectrum.

He’s said he is convinced that both Democrats and Republicans have failed the country.

U.S. President & Vice President

Green Party Ticket Howie Hawkins is one of the original Green party members in the United States and has run for multiple political offices as its candidate, including governor of New York. He is also the original "Green New Dealer," as he was the first U.S. candidate to campaign for a Green New Deal in 2010. Howie has spent his life as an organizer for peace, justice, union and environmental campaigns. He has written articles on politics, economics and the environment and has appeared in publications such as the International Socialist Review.

Hawkins and Walker’s ticket platform includes Medicare for All and the Green New Deal, which is a plan to deliver clean energy. The platform also wants police departments subject to community control and investigation.

Additionally, the platform includes legalizing marijuana, reducing the military budget and ending the War on Drugs. Other desires include increasing the minimum wage, building sustainable agriculture and food systems and sending COVID-19 relief that puts the working class first.

An independent socialist, Angela Walker is from Milwaukee, Wisconsin and has worked as an activist and organizer. At the University of North Florida, Walker studied history. She has been involved in demonstrations such as protesting the war in Iraq as well as defending unions. Additionally, she was appointed as legislative director for the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 998 in Milwaukee. Angela is an advocate for the rights of Black, Brown and Indigenous people, the LGBTQ community, labor and the Earth.

U.S. Representative DISTRICT 15 Rep. Steve Stivers is the incumbent candidate of Ohio’s 15th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Stivers, a Republican, has represented the district since 2011. Before that, he served in the Ohio Senate.

Stivers previously served as the chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee, which helps to elect Republicans to the U.S. House of Representatives. He also served as a brigadier general in the Ohio National Guard and active duty as a battalion commander in Iraq.

Stivers believes a Balanced Budget Amendment should be enacted to the Constitution. He has voted to repeal Obamacare 50 times and believes in "market-based reforms that lower costs and increase access to patients," according to his campaign website. Stivers considers himself a strong defender of the Second Amendment and a proud member of the NRA. He also wants to improve the country’s infrastructure, maintain a strong military and improve broadband access in rural Ohio regions.

Joel Newby is an attorney from Columbus who is challenging Stivers as the Democratic candidate. He was born in Pickaway County and attended Ohio University for his undergraduate studies.

Newby supports establishing a single-payer healthcare system, rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement and putting the U.S. in a direction to rely solely on clean energy by 2050. He also supports automatic voter registration and expanding the Voting Rights Act. In addition, he supports the Equal Rights Amendment, making broadband more accessible within the district, passing the Dream Act, reforming policing, eliminating tariffs that affect farmers and making higher education more accessible.

OHIO STATE SENATOR DISTRICT 30 Sen. Frank Hoagland, a Mingo Junction resident, is running as the Republican incumbent for the District 30 Ohio Senate race. Hoagland is a former Navy SEAL and served for 30 years before retiring in 2011. Hoagland served overseas in South America in the war on drugs, which he said formed his position on combating drug use. He now owns a small business that promotes emergency situation preparation. Hoagland is campaigning on increasing safety in schools, reducing business regulations and developing infrastructure.

Michael Fletcher is running as the Democratic candidate for the District 30 Ohio Senate. Fletcher, an Athens native, graduated from Ohio University. He was heavily involved in the Boy Scouts and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Fletcher is still involved with scouting and assists area Boy Scout organizations.

His platform is informed by his concerns as a parent and includes reducing standardized testing in schools, increasing access to higher education and developing infrastructure.

OHIO STATE REPRESENTATIVE DISTRICT 94 Rep. Jay Edwards, a Nelsonville native, is running for a third term as the Republican incumbent for the District 94 Ohio House race. Edwards graduated from Nelsonville-York High School and attended Ohio University, where he played football and earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. Edwards emphasizes his Appalachian cultural heritage. He supports increasing vocational schooling in the region and combating the opioid epidemic. Edwards opposes gun control restrictions.

Katie O’Neill, a Nelsonville resident, is running as the Democratic candidate for the District 94 Ohio House. O’Neill attended Ohio University, for her bachelor’s degree in history and the environment, and Vermont Law School, where she received a master’s in energy regulation. O’Neill’s father is former Ohio Supreme Court Justice Bill O’Neill. Her platform includes opposing fracking in the region, advocating for police reform and expanding vocational schooling opportunities.

Ohio Supreme Court (CHOOSE 1) Judi French, the incumbent candidate, has occupied her Supreme Court seat since 2013. Before joining the court, she served as a judge for the 10th District Court of Appeals. French is a supporter of Ohio Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor’s call for criminal justice reform. As an Ohio assistant attorney general, she argued before the U.S. Supreme Court that using tax dollars to send students to private and religious schools is constitutional.

Jennifer Brunner currently serves as a judge of the 10th District Court of Appeals. She previously served as the secretary of state of Ohio from 2007 to 2011. Brunner supports Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor’s criminal justice reforms and has worked with election law before.

ATHENS COUNTY Prosecuting Attorney Keller Blackburn, an incumbent Democrat living in Nelsonville, is running unopposed for Athens County Prosecuting Attorney. He has served as the Athens County prosecutor since 2013.

Blackburn graduated from the Ohio State University with a degree in political science and later graduated from Cleveland State University's law school, where he was awarded the Editor of the Year on Law Review. After undergrad, he worked as a researcher with the Clinton administration in Washington, D.C., where he contributed new ideas for narrowing the “digital divide” in Appalachia. In 2009, he was awarded the Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association Meritorious.

Additionally, Blackburn participates in foundations that encourage the public, specifically young people, to make healthy choices.

ATHENS CITY Ballot Initatives Issue 1 is a proposed renewal of a 0.10% income tax levy for the next ten years. The revenue coming from this levy would be used to pay for street improvements in the city of Athens.

Issue 24 is a proposed sales and use tax levy of 0.25% for the next five years. The revenue coming from this levy would be used to make improvements to the 911 operating system.

ATHENS COUNTY COMMISSIONER (CHOOSE 1) Chris Chmiel, a Democrat, graduated from Ohio University, where he created and studied his own major, "Wholistic Transition to Sustainability."

Chmiel worked in construction for the Community Food Initiatives. He also served on the Athens Board of Commissioners for two terms. In his first term, he helped the Athens-Hocking Recycling Center split off from AthensHocking Solid Waste District.

ATHENS COUNTY COMMISSIONER (CHOOSE 1) Charlie Adkins, a Democrat, is the incumbent in the race for Athens County commissioner, a position he’s held for the past eight years. Adkins said his top priority is making sure Athens County emergency medical services are appropriately funded. He also wants to complete ongoing projects, such as the sewer project on U.S. Route 50 West. Adkins seeks to combat land pollution in Athens County.

Bill Hayes, an Independent candidate for Athens County commissioner, is an Ohio University graduate with a bachelor’s degree in zoology pre-med.

Hayes wants to create more jobs in Athens County, “spread the wealth” and take advantage of natural resources and opportunities in the area. He seeks to increase tourism — particularly eco-tourism — in the region. Hayes also wants to make it easier for local entrepreneurs to start businesses.
