With Summer upon us - I seem to remember it fell on a Tuesday last year - let’s get ready for a selection of films to heat you up or cool you down… whatever your preference. If it’s heat you need, we give you ‘The Bikeriders’ with an A-list cast on America’s hot highways; the Cape Verde-set drama ‘Àma Gloria’; a pair of unmissable Westerns: Viggo Mortensen’s ‘The Dead Don’t Hurt’ and Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon: An American Saga’; the new ‘Mad Max’ spin-off ‘Furiosa’; or how about a dose of ‘Riverdance’. If you need cooling down, try the Stephen Fry helmed ‘Treasure’; the Nordic Noir ‘What Remains’; Anthony Hopkins as the most famous psychoanalyst in ‘Freud’s Last Session’; or the critically acclaimed Georgian romance ‘Blackbird Blackbird Blackberry’. We are at your service!

Other season highlights include the story of the famous champagne house ‘Widow Clicquot’; four Italian Neo-Realist films to complement the new (and much-requested) ‘There’s Still Tomorrow’; Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Kind of Kindness’ fresh from Cannes; and the sure-to-be crowd favourite ‘Thelma’.

HARD MILES

A prison social worker assembles a cycling team of teenage convicts and takes them on a transformative 1,000-mile ride. An exhilarating, inspirational and uplifting true story. At a medium-security correctional school in Colorado, beleaguered coach Greg Townsend (Matthew Modine) rounds up an unlikely crew of incarcerated students for a seemingly impossible bike ride from Denver to the Grand Canyon. As the beginner cyclists battle heatstroke, speed wobbles, and the greatest enemy of all cyclists - a chafed crotch - they must learn to stop fighting and ride together as a peloton. As caring social worker Haddie (Cynthia Kaye McWilliams) attempts to be the voice of reason, coach Townsend pushes the boys to their limit, and cracks begin to form. This is an inspiring, positive role-model film, and visually, Hanna and cinematographer Mack Fisher beautifully capture the rugged and harrowing landscapes.

Between outraged parents, opinionated colleagues and aggressive students, she is relentlessly confronted with the structures of the school system. The more desperately she tries to do everything right, the more the young teacher threatens to break. A smart and provocative modern parable with the heart of a thriller, ‘The Teachers’ Lounge’ brilliantly uses its setting as the backdrop for a look at how quickly even tight-knit communities can be destabilised. FREUD’S LAST SESSION

Sigmund Freud (Anthony Hopkins) and converted atheist C.S. Lewis (Matthew Goode) meet as their worlds are going through drastic change.

September 1939, Hitler has just invaded Poland and set Europe at war. Freud arrived in London a year earlier, after the Nazis marched into Vienna, whilst Lewis is an Oxford don who has not yet written his beloved Narnia books, but has recently embraced Christianity after years as a nonbeliever. These two titans of 20th century thought meet at the psychoanalyst’s London home to discuss God, father figures and, of course, sex. This lavish film is based on a modest offBroadway play that captivated theatre audiences a decade ago. Playwright Mark St. Germain worked with director Matthew Brown to reshape his two-character drama into this intriguing film, which also benefits from wonderful cinematography and production design. Richard Linklater’s latest film sees a professor moonlighting as a hit man of sorts, descending into dubious territory when he finds himself attracted to a woman who enlists his services. Wildly entertaining and laugh-out loud clever. This neo-noir comedy stars Glen Powell as strait-laced professor Gary Johnson, who moonlights as a fake hit man for the New Orleans Police Department. Gifted at inhabiting different guises and personalities to catch hapless people hoping to bump off their enemies, Gary descends into morally dubious territory when he finds himself attracted to one of those potential criminals, a beautiful young woman named Madison (Adria Arjona). As Madison falls for one of Gary’s hit man personas - the mysteriously sexy Ron - their steamy affair sets off a chain reaction of play acting, deception and escalating stakes. This deceptively dark thriller is loaded with laughs, and one of the most purely entertaining films of Linklater’s (‘Before Sunrise’, ‘Boyhood’) career.

We are delighted to welcome director Frank Mannion for a Q&A (Sat screening only) following his acclaimed feature documentary, described by the Daily Mail as “a love letter to everything great and Irish” and “a fast paced and entertaining look” at the Emerald Isle.

An all-star cast led by Pierce Brosnan, two Presidents, a Prince, a pop star and an unconventional Irish Lord, the film is a journey through Ireland’s cultural heritage, exploring the origins of whiskey production, the world-famous Guinness brewery, ageold equestrian pursuits, traditional Gaelic athletics and the enchanting appeal of Dunsany Castle. Featuring interviews with various celebrities and other well-known figures talking about what it means to be Irish. But not just your conventional celebrities, there are some very interesting chats such as with Irish-Nigerian broadcaster and author Emma Dabiri painfully remembering growing up as the only black girl in school in Dublin and the exploration of the prejudices faced by Irish immigrants to the US and the UK.

TRAINSPOTTING

In this modern-day cult classic, an addict deeply immersed in the Edinburgh drug scene tries to clean up and get out despite the allure of drugs and the influence of friends. Heroin addict Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) stumbles through bad ideas and sobriety attempts with his unreliable friends - Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), Begbie (Robert Carlyle), Spud (Ewen Bremner) and Tommy (Kevin McKidd). He also has an underage girlfriend, Diane (Kelly Macdonald), along for the ride. After cleaning up and moving from Edinburgh to London, Mark finds he can’t escape the life he left behind when Begbie and Sick Boy show up. The film has lost none of its edge today, managing to be both inarguably of its time, but also has not dated nearly as much as most youth culture movies tend to. This is partly due to Danny Boyle’s canny music choices – Iggy Pop, Lou Reed and Underworld - plus iconic scenes like the boys watching Archie Gemmill in 1978, scoring for Scotland against The Netherlands in the World Cup. We also screen Boyle’s ‘Sunshine’ in July as the second of our ‘Cult of Cinema’ offering this season.

FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA

The origin story of renegade warrior Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) before her encounter and team-up with Mad Max. Set 15 to 20 years before the events of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’, as the world falls apart, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and into the hands of a Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth). While two Tyrants war for dominance over the Citadel, Furiosa survives many trials as she plots a way back home through the Wasteland. It is astounding to think that the original ‘Mad Max’ (1979) director George Miller is still creating exhilarating and ground-breaking films from the franchise today. He hasn’t just given us more of the same with ‘Furiosa’, just as he surprised us in 2015 with one of the best action films of the century with ‘Fury Road’, but he has not forgone the glue that holds these films together: spectacular action sequences, sweeping landscapes and a colourful cast of wild characters.

When the man she loves, Holger Olsen (Mortensen), goes off to fight in the Civil War, Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps) must fend for herself in a place controlled by a corrupt Mayor (Danny Huston) and crooked land baron (Garret Dillahunt). When Olsen returns from the war, he and Vivienne must confront and make peace with the person each has become. Krieps brings to this Western a particular femininity missing from most in the genre; a softness that is singular to her and her style of performance, and the film is much richer for it. This is a beautifully shot and sombre film about an old-school hero. (Some subtitles)

Beguiling, original and ultimately celebratory, the movie is a delightful romp through the imaginative worlds of childhood. Comparable in style to those 1980s classics ‘Stand By Me’ and ‘The Goonies’, don’t be surprised if this finds itself in the ‘cult’ section of film libraries in a few years’ time.

Set in postwar 1940s Italy, we follow a woman breaking traditional family patterns and aspiring to a different future. A huge box office smash in Italy, and now getting the critical acclaim it deserves worldwide.

This is a richly sentimental working-class drama (with a few laughs) of postwar Rome. A story of domestic abuse whose heroine (actress and director Paola Cortellesi) finally escapes from misogyny and cruelty through a piece of narrative sleight-of-hand that borders on magic-neorealism, performed with theatrical flair and marvellously composed in luminous monochrome. The film pays homage to early pictures by De Sica and Fellini, and Cortellesi’s own performance is consciously in the spirit of divas such as Anna Magnani and Sophia Loren. This is storytelling with terrific confidence and panache, and currently rating 100% on the film critics’ website Rotten Tomatoes. (Subtitles)

Giorgio Manfredi (Marcello Pagliero), one of the leaders of the Italian Resistance, is tracked down by the Nazis. He goes to his friend Francesco’s (Francesco Grandjacquet) and asks Francesco’s fiancé Pina (Anna Magnani) for help, who in turn enlists the aid of a courageous priest (the excellent Aldo Fabriz). The visceral cinematography blends the grit of a documentary with the heart and soul of a drama (Fellini collaborated with Rosselini on the screenplay) as the people of Rome wrestle with the constraints, compromises and collusions of life during wartime. In the middle of an infidelity crisis, a middle-aged couple decide to open their marriage and venture into polyamory. When the marriage of politician Juulia (Alma Pöysti) and parish priest Matias (Eero Milonoff) hits a rocky patch due to Matias’ affair with Enni (Oona Airola), the expected tearful confrontation follows. But Juulia sits down with Matias and Enni and suggests an open marriage, handing the pair a guide to polyamory. Evoking the middle-class relationship turmoil of much of Ingmar Bergman’s work, albeit without his propensity for dramatic heft, this Finnish film charts not so much a love triangle as a love rhombus. It is a mature piece stuffed with thorny relationship dilemmas, preoccupied by sex and populated chiefly by a sparse cast of well-heeled, intelligent characters in safe, comfortable surroundings. If Bergman were alive, this is exactly what he would be creating. (Subtitles)

When the foreman (Sebastian Hulk) brutally turns on Rosa’s father (Francisco Nunez), she sets out for justice, seeking help from the king (Daniel Antivilo) of a powerful organisation of sorcerers. Based on remarkable events in the 1880s, this is part recreation of legend and history, part politico/religious allegory, part revenge story and part straight-up supernatural thriller. Don’t expect jump scares or a traditional horror film about witchcraft, the wonderful landscapes and overall aura of Chiloé, and its cryptic folklore, is what will overwhelm you.

Kathy (Jodie Comer), a strong-willed member of the Vandals who is married to wild and reckless Benny (Austin Butler), recounts the Vandals’ evolution from a local club of outsiders united by good times, rumbling bikes and respect for their strong, steady leader Johnny (Tom Hardy). Nichols genuinely captures the spirit of this particular rugged era and keeps your attention even if you never gave a second thought to those packs of bike riders passing you on the highway. Even with a cast that includes Tom Hardy, it is Jodie Comer who steals the show - she is stunning! The soundtrack, featuring Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters and The Shangri-Las among many others, is magnificent.

Sandy Guthrie from Chichester Cinema at New Park’s Education Team will deliver a detailed talk on the Pythons, tracing the TV programme’s origins and the post-Python careers of its various team members after the TV series ended.

Sandy will provide a lavishly illustrated guide to all things Python with a delicious selection of well-known clips and some rarer, not so often seen clips too. The talk will look at the programmes and films the Python team made together as well as following their successful individual paths as writers, actors and directors.

In the treacherous and swampy forests that make up the so-called “green border” between Belarus and Poland, refugees from the Middle East and Africa trying to reach the European Union are trapped in a geopolitical crisis cynically engineered by Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko. In an attempt to provoke Europe, refugees are lured to the border by propaganda promising easy passage to the EU. Finding themselves pawns in this hidden war, the lives of activist Julia, border guard Jan and a Syrian family intertwine. Thirty years after her Oscar-nominated ‘Europa Europa’, Agnieszka Holland’s poignant and essential film opens our eyes and speaks to the heart, challenging viewers to reflect on the moral choices that fall to ordinary people every day. Elena (Greta Grineviciute) is a contemporary dancer, living her life freely bouncing from relationships and sexual encounters without a serious commitment. When she meets interpreter Dovyda (Kęstutis Cicėnas), someone who joins to interpret for a hearing-impaired group of teenagers she’s teaching, there’s an instant spark. When he discloses that he is asexual, she is unsure how to respond. This peels back a layer of modern dating that is not often seen in film, and it is done so in a way that feels natural and poignant. A father and son in the suburbs of Casablanca get by on petty crimes for a local mob. When a kidnapping goes wrong, they must find a way to dispose of the body.

Hassan (Abdellatif Masstouri) and his son Issam (Ayoub Elaid) are a mismatched pair of itinerant criminals in Casablanca who are given a kidnapping job by a local crime lord. The plan does not go as expected and the duo are left with the task of disposing of a body – a rather large one. During the dark night that follows, the balance of power and authority between father and son shifts, though the price Issam pays for taking control will be, if all goes well, a life of indentured mob servitude. The film is briskly told with atmospheric tension, visceral and confidently cavalier in its depiction of everyday underworld brutality. Viewers will appreciate actors rich in weathered, storied faces of the kind not typically found by the dozen in acting schools. Very well received in Cannes 2023. The pair adore each other, so when Gloria’s mother’s passing calls her to return home to her native Cape Verde, their world is thrown into a spin. Cléo’s single dad (Arnaud Rebotini) who works long hours daily, sees how much his daughter misses her nanny and finally agrees that she spends her summer holiday with Gloria. Most of the film takes place on the beautiful island in Cape Verde as Cléo shares a roof in Gloria’s tiny home with her two children, Nanda and César. This is an exceptional solo directorial debut from Marie Amachoukeli-Barsacq who based the story on her own childhood experience with her nanny. Critics have been raving about this remarkable, feel-good piece of cinema (100% on Rotten Tomatoes), and Mauroy-Panzani as six-year-old Cléo is a revelation.

They enjoy a brief romance, punctuated by Antonio’s marriage proposal, and Karin, seeing her chance to escape the camp, accepts. But Antonio takes her back to Stromboli, the volcanic island he lives on, and Karin struggles with a language barrier, brutal living conditions and her outsider status. This partnership (professional and romantic) between Bergman and Rossellini started when she sent a letter to the director after seeing his ‘Rome, Open City’ (also screening this season), saying that if he could use a Swede who could speak good English, but could only say “ti amo” in Italian, to get in touch with her. This father-daughter road trip set in 1990s Poland, follows Ruth (Lena Dunham), an American music journalist, and her father Edek (Stephen Fry), a charmingly stubborn Holocaust survivor, on a journey to his homeland. While Ruth is eager to make sense of her family’s past, Edek embarks on the trip with his own agenda. This emotional, funny culture clash of two New Yorkers exploring post-socialist Poland is a powerful example of how reconnecting with family and the past can be an unexpected treasure. The film addresses the Holocaust very differently to other recent films and TV series, using whimsy and anecdote instead of shock. All he must do is physically move the hands of an heirloom upright clock. This proves useful because his parents – mum Jen (Isla Fisher) and dad Eric (Greg Kinnear) – are on a path towards separation, which they hope to announce at a family dinner that evening. So Taylor, who is electively mute, brings out his best ‘Groundhog Day’ tactics, and keeps rewinding time each time tweaking the parents’ day. This is a fun, family film that could be enjoyed by all and includes a scene-stealing performance by Arturo Castro as a highly unprofessional therapist.

Capturing the experiences of Afghanistan women’s lives under the Taliban since they took control of Kabul, this documentary not only deserves our attention but also our action.

We first see what had become normal life in Kabul. A busy market filled with produce and customers. Carefree children play together. A beautiful woman walks the streets in colourful attire. But we are then introduced to the three women who form the core of the film. We follow dentist Zahra, activist Taranom and government employee Sharifa in real time as they fight to recover their autonomy. Director Mani captures the spirit and resilience of the Afghan women through a raw depiction of their harrowing plight, offering a powerful window into the seismic impact on women’s rights and livelihoods after Kabul fell to the Taliban in 2021. This turns out to be something of an understatement. Dickey is remarkable in this very smart and not run-of-the-mill revenge thriller.

Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone team up for a third time (‘The Favourite’, ‘Poor Things’) in this triptych fable which features the usual brave filmmaking mixed with dark comedy. A film where the director once again puts up a mirror to our flawed society and shows us the worst, and also the best, that humanity has to offer. A man seeks to break free from his predetermined path and tries to take control of his own life; a policeman is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader. There is always a clamouring of A-listers to get into a Lanthimos film, and this one has a few regulars (Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley) and a couple of newcomers (a brilliant Jesse Plemmons, Hong Chau). For those of you who discovered Lanthimos with ‘The Favourite’ or ‘Poor Things’, get ready to meet the original ‘Dogtooth’ version - unfiltered, uncut, old-school Yorgos. At the risk of Jax losing custody to Roki’s grandfather, Frank (Shea Whigham), the pair hit the road and scour the backcountry to track down Roki’s mother in time for the powwow. What begins as a search gradually turns into a far deeper investigation into the complexities and contradictions of Indigenous women moving through a colonised world while at the mercy of a failed justice system. Two sisters have their relationship challenged on an anticipated coach trip to Paris. Based on the true story of the director’s own two sisters, this is a heartwarming movie about love and devotion. Inger (Sofie Gråbøl) and Ellen (Lene Maria Christensen) are on a trip to Paris. When Inger announces her struggles with mental health to the group, the sisters are faced with pity from some and discrimination from others. On arrival in Paris, it soon becomes clear that Inger has a hidden agenda concerning a figure from her past, ultimately involving the entire group in her hunt for answers. This is a film about love and caring for each other, in spite of our differences, as much as it is a film about not judging a book by its cover. The trip itself brings out many sides of Inger, and director Arden Oplev does a wonderful job ensuring Inger’s humanity stays in the spotlight whether through drama or comedy. Because, despite the pitfalls of the subject matter, this is a very funny movie. (Subtitles)

As the Icarus II races toward its fiery destination, an accident, a grave mistake and a distress beacon from a longlost spaceship throw the desperate mission into a tailspin. In the face of this, Captain Kaneda (Hiroyuki Sanada) keeps his cool, while the streamlined crew - including Cillian Murphy, Rose Byrne, Michelle Yeoh and Chris Evans - more or less keeps it together. With fluid orchestration of the brisk editing, prowling camerawork and unnerving sound design, this is a remarkable film for how it creates life on a space vehicle and the cosmos around it… and it’s worth noting that like ‘2001’, the ‘Star Wars’ films and the ‘Alien’ series, it was made in Britain.

A photographer in a small fishing village is visited by a man who claims to be Saint Andrea. The Saint gives him a special camera device to solve the village’s ills - by taking a photograph of an existing picture, the photo subject dies. Initially sure of his good intentions, he aims the weapon at human injustice, but discovers in the process that good and evil are intertwined. Inspired by the commedia dell’arte, complete with political allusions and a strong moral message, the film was initially abandoned by Rossellini in 1948, only to be completed four years later. THE COMMANDANT’S SHADOW

Follows Hans Jürgen Höss, the son of Auschwitz Camp Commandant Rudolf Höss (from the recent ‘The Zone of Interest’), when he confronts his father’s involvement in the murder of over a million Jews during the Holocaust.

The Höss clan was fictionally captured in Jonathan Glazer’s Academy Award-winning ‘The Zone of Interest’. Now, the family that inspired the disturbing saga is focused on in this new documentary. The documentary centres on two stories, one of Auschwitz survivor Anita Lasker-Wallfisch and another of Höss recalling his own childhood in the family villa at Auschwitz. The two meet 80 years later, and together with their children, Kai Höss and Maya Lasker-Wallfisch, explore their very different hereditary burdens. The documentary includes original excerpts of Rudolf Höss’ autobiography, written shortly before his execution. We will be rescreening ‘The Zone of Interest’ to complement this documentary. The film observes Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel) and his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller) as they live their happy family life right next door to the concentration camp. Shot like a casual European dramedy about a family at their summer home, the reality that surrounds them is revealed only by the barbed wire fences, small details in conversation, skies filled with smoke, bursts of sound design, and the piercing score. Friedel as Höss is frightening in his mundanity and Hüller as Hedwig gives the film its twisted humanity. The moments where Hedwig is cruel to her house staff almost feel like a relief - evil we can see even if it’s so much milder than what’s over the walls. Listen out for one of the most amazing sound editing (BAFTA and Oscar winner) of any film in recent memory. (Subtitles)

When 93-year-old Thelma Post gets duped by a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson, she sets out on a treacherous quest across the city to reclaim what was taken from her.

Inspired by a real-life experience of director Josh Margolin’s own grandmother, this film puts a clever spin on movies like ‘Mission: Impossible’, shining the spotlight on an elderly grandmother as an unlikely action hero. With infectious humour, Margolin employs the familiar tropes of the action genre in hilarious, age-appropriate ways to tackle aging with agency.
