The Etudes Project is an ongoing exploration of the tradition and transformation of keyboard virtuosity in the piano repertoire. Inspired by my world tour of Philip Glass’ Piano Etudes with the composer himself, I created the Etudes Project with the idea juxtaposing new works alongside some of the most challenging works from the existing piano etudes repertoire.

To inaugurate this project, I have partnered with ICEBERG New Music, a collective of 10 com posers based in New York City, to create a program of new solo piano etudes that run the stylistic gamut from pop-inspired dance music to avant-garde constructions. Each of these pieces has been paired with an existing etude – by Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Scriabin, Crawford Seeger, Messiaen, Ligeti, Glass, Chin, and Hosokawa, – inviting listeners to search for connections between virtuosic piano writing from the past and present. The entire collection of Etudes have been recorded and are available on the Sono Luminus label and all the new ICEBERG Etudes are published here by NewMusicShelf, making these exciting works available to future generations.
