Located in Morris, CT, Hungry Reaper Farm believes in growing food in a manner that is beneficial to the soil, water, air, and people. On their farm, they use practices that adhere to the National Organic Program standards, which means Hungry Reaper Farm never uses synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. They only use OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) approved inputs and strive to manage their farm in a way that mimics the systems observed in nature. Compost teas, attracting beneficial insects, crop rotation, biodiversity of plants and soil microbes, and cover cropping are just some of the strategies Hungry Reaper Farm uses to produce delicious vegetables for their community. The result is produce that’s both safe and ecologically friendly.
While farmers often get a bad reputation for being damaging to the environment, Hungry Reaper Farm believes that responsible management of farmland has the power to sequester carbon, protect our natural resources, and ensure the stability of our planet for generations to come.
Though they are not certified organic at this time, Hungry Reaper has an open invitation to their customers to come to the farm and see their practices in action.
Jill Verzino and Will O’Meara are the Co-Founders and Farm Managers of Hungry Reaper Farm. Together, they drive the farm’s mission. You can find their vegetables for sale at New Morning Market, The Market in Bantam, and at The Farmers Market of Black Rock in Bridgeport, CT. They also run a robust CSA from June through October, where you can invest in the community farm and receive a weekly “share” of the season’s available produce.
