SHINE CLUB ADDS A SPLASH OF SPARKLE TO LOCAL BOX WINE South African Breweries’ Shine Club is offering an exciting new selection of delicious wine to create unforgettable moments. The team set out on a journey to reinvigorate the boxed wine category and came up with a quality wine delivered in irresistible packaging. New variants include the Natural Sweet White, which is a lightbodied, well-balanced sweet wine, containing lively notes of ripe peach and citrus. Shine Club’s Natural Sweet Rosé is a light pink wine, with romantic aromas of sweet watermelon, Turkish delight, fresh strawberries and a whisper of rose petal. Their Natural Sweet Red is characterised by its easy-drinking juicy style, with bursts of ripe blackberry and raspberry flavours.

Unleash your inner Queen Black Crown is a gin & tonic spirit cooler that is 5% ABV. It is a truly South African gin & tonic that uses local ingredients, including local gin from Cape Town, as part of its makeup. Black Crown is an easy-drinking gin & tonic mixer that has a crisp citrus aroma, where juniper gives way to refreshing lemon notes. Black Crown is a full, juicy citrus beverage with a zesty mid-sip and subtle bitterness in the finish balances the sweetness and leads to a rounded gin-based beverage and a novel release from South African Breweries.

SIR FRUIT LAUNCHES ALL NEW GINGERADE+

People are aware of the great health benefits of ginger so South Africa’s favourite premium juice company, Sir Fruit, has developed a mouthwatering ginger recipe to join its juice family –Gingerade+. The combination of lemon and ginger has traditionally been used to soothe the digestive system, settle the stomach and relieve nausea with immune-boosting support. The masterminds at Sir Fruit decided to blend ginger with lemon and apple juices to create the perfect flavour balance; and for an

extra boost, incorporated added vitamins to the recipe. Packed with a good dose of wellness in a bottle, Gingerade+ includes 100% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of added vitamins such as B1, B2, B3, B6, C, D and E. “A strong immune system is so important right now and we aimed to play our part in helping people stay healthy. Sip on South Africa’s first plant-based lattes Nestlé’s new premium Nescafé Gold plant-based, non-dairy lattes are now available in South Africa. Crafted with plant-based ingredients, these are non-dairy coffee lattes for people following a vegan diet, those wishing to live a healthier, sustainable lifestyle and everyone with a taste for exceptional coffee. Curated using a blend of the highest quality Arabica and Robusta coffee beans, almond, oat and coconut, the lattes are delectably smooth and creamy while being vegan–friendly and dairy-free. Nicole Roos, business executive officer beverages at Nestlé South Africa, says, “We keep our fingers on the pulse of consumer requirements. Worldwide, there is growing consumer consciousness of health, wellness and longevity which has inspired a move towards natural, plant-based products. “Until now, there has been no one-cup soluble cappuccino treat for consumers who do not consume dairy products; whether it is a lifestyle choice or because they must avoid dairy due to allergies or health reasons. With the new plant-based mixes range, we are the first food and beverage manufacturer in South Africa to introduce an offering that invites them to enjoy a premium frothy cappuccino experience at home,” she adds. There are three variants, each with its discerning flavour. The vegan-friendly flavours are Coconut Latte, Almond Latte and Oat Latte. The one-cup milk-alternative latte sachets are easy to prepare. Simply add hot water, stir vigorously and savour the sensory experience of coffee crafted with the best quality ingredients.

a gold medal for its development of the Spar two-litre Pure-Pak milk carton in the Best in Beverages: Non-alcoholic Packaging category. The carton also achieved a gold medal in the Best in Paper Packaging category. “Nampak brought together an idea by Spar with liquid carton board by Stora Enso and execution by Woodlands Dairy to see the launch of the first Natura Life gable top carton in South Africa. This achievement showcases our commitment to sustainability, and we look forward to producing award-winning, planet-friendly packaging in the future,” says Quinton Swart, Nampak group

An order of the Western Cape High Court interdicted and restrained South African Breweries (SAB), owned by AB InBev, from distributing, marketing or selling two Brutal Fruit Spritzer variants with non-compliant labelling and advertising. In 2020, Distell lodged a formal complaint with South Africa’s Advertising Regulatory Board (ARB) in respect of the Brutal Fruit Apple Spritzer product, given that it was labelled, advertised and promoted in a way that represented itself as an alcoholic fruit beverage, described as an ‘alcoholic fruit blend’ when it is in fact a maize-based ‘ale’. The ARB ruling on 27 August 2020 found that these Brutal Fruit ready-to-drink (RTD) products, which are popular with younger female consumers, have been promoted by SAB in “a way that is misleading consumers”. The High Court order was made on 10 December 2020, and restricts the use of labels that convey the Brutal Fruit products as ‘alcoholic fruit beverages’. It should rather be correctly labelled as ‘ales’ (in line with the Liquor Products Act, 60 of 1989). SAB had to stop using the non-compliant labels on or before 18 December 2020, and had to, with immediate effect, remove or withdraw all marketing and advertising in respect of the Brutal Fruit products. This advertising included all television, radio, billboards, websites, social media, press, print media and in-store advertising and promotional materials in their immediate control. Distell commented, “We are pleased with the outcome of this matter. These Brutal Fruit ready-to-drink products have been promoted in a way that is misleading consumers. This also disadvantages local competitors who produce and sell authentic ‘alcoholic fruit beverages’. The company believes in strong and healthy competition to support consumer choice, balanced with transparency about what’s inside their drink to build trust and ultimately brand equity.”

executive: Paper and Eastern Africa. The Spar two-litre Pure-Pak milk carton was recently revamped. It is 100% recyclable and made from 87% renewable sources. The carton board communicates organic values while running on existing filling lines without modifications in machine settings. The strength of the unbleached board results in a lower weight, thus further reducing the carbon footprint. The new carton closures have better pouring functionality and are bio-based, which means they are derived from plant-based sources and fully recyclable in existing South African plasticrecycling streams.

POLARVISION CELEBRATES THREE YEARS In 2017, the frozen vegetable market was predicted to grow at an average CAGR of 5% from 2018 to 2025. In response to this predicted industry boom, Bühler developed the Sortex FA PolarVision. Three years on, all the major players in the industry have Sortex technologies installed in their IQF lines. “Frozen fruit and vegetable processors can feel certain of world-class performance when placing Sortex FA PolarVision optical sorters in their processing lines, whether after freezing, before the packing line, or bulk-to-bulk,” explains Stefano Bonacina, global head fruit & vegetables at Bühler. The technology offers a 1 200mm adjustable UHMW-PE chute and was launched in 2017; followed by the FA1, with a 600mm chute for smaller capacity processors. T LED-Xenon lighting and a PolarVision detection system combines two dedicated technologies – PolarCam and InGaAsHD – to spot all types of foreign material in frozen fruit and vegetable applications, including dark- and light-coloured plastics, wood, glass, snails and cardboards. The FA range also pushes boundaries with a hygienic design that is not only practical but also offers superior access and cleanliness.

TECH FIGHTS AND KILLS 99.9% OF CORONAVIRUS Daikin’s patented streamer technology successfully inactivates more than 99.9% of the novel coronavirus after irradiating the virus for three hours. Using a type of plasma discharge featuring an innovative air purification technology that generates high-speed electrons, its oxidative decomposition capability is much higher than the conventional plasma discharge (glow discharge). When combined with air components, these highspeed electrons have a capability for powerful oxidative decomposition that continuously removes odours, bacteria, and indoor air pollutants such as formaldehyde.

industry with specific emphasis on hygiene, food safety and cost-effectiveness. Astratek is the brainchild of Peter Grobler, who has over 35 years’ experience in fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) manufacturing operations. Grobler assembled a team of specialised engineers with experience in a variety of African manufacturing contexts to design state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities, as well as operate and optimise existing facilities. The team provides an end-to-end service offering tailored to the client’s manufacturing needs. This offering is comprised of full engineering, procurement and construction (EPC), plant design and construction, outsourced plant operations and plant optimisation strategies. The team has worked on FMCG plants specialising in the production of a variety of products, such as: baked products, including designing a brand-new par-baked sourdough bread production line; dairy; prepared meals; confectionery and snacks; beverages and bottled water; spices and condiments; household and personal care; and fishing and processing. Grobler explains, “We design facility layouts using operational modelling techniques to ensure the smooth flow of materials, product and people. This includes the design of services and utilities such as electricity, water, fuel, steam and condensate and compressed air. These are often neglected areas which can increase profitability through cost-saving, as well as ensure companies are stewarding valuable resources such as water and energy more responsibly.” Astratek is particularly proud of their strong food safety and occupational health and safety expertise. “We have an intimate and hands-on understanding of hygienic plant design principles. To reduce complexity and minimise risk, we use proprietary risk assessment tools to stop problems before they happen,” Grobler states. As an added assurance, Astratek is a member of the European Hygienic Engineering and Design Group (EHEDG), thus having access to the latest standards and manufacturing techniques to manage any product safety concerns.

While excessive panic buying seems to have subsided, there has been a sustained demand for groceries as consumers choose to avoid restaurants and eating out due to safety concerns. As disposable income takes a hit due to economic conditions, consumers are also opting for bulk-packaged goods, which offer greater value for money than single-serving items.

We also took on two new boilermaker apprentices and will run our first welder apprentice exchange programme with the Swiss-based head office. We will host two of their welder apprentices and two of our apprentices will go there. It will be a six-week programme and they will be working on the production line to gain some experience in four major welding processes, namely oxy-acetylene gas welding, TIG welding, gas metal arc welding and shielded metal arc welding. The African Milling School in Nairobi, Kenya also continues with various training courses in the milling industry for customers and delegates throughout Africa”Harry Bloechlinger is MD for Southern Africa

As with the Mill E3, Arrius improves efficiency in the areas of energy, building investment and installation time. The direct drive reduces energy consumption by up to 10%. Energy recovery is achieved mechanically via the gear unit specially developed for Arrius. The integrated drive saves an entire floor structurally, which reduces investment costs. The integrated design allows Arrius to be wired and tested ready for operation in the Bühler assembly plant. Thanks to this plug-and-play system, the time required for installation and start-up is significantly reduced. In conclusion, Bloechlinger says, “It is our aim to always remain relevant to the customers in our care and the society at large, allowing them to produce safe and healthy staple food to feed the people, as well as sustaining hope through what we do.”

CEREALS, GRAINS & MILLING

Mix with the best Gramec’s history dates back to 1955, when it was known as The Grain Milling and Food Processing Engineering Company. Torb and Colleen Ellefsen bought the company 43 years ago and changed the name to the now well-known Gramec. Food Review spoke to them about its history and product development.

GRAMEC MIXERS • Each model can work effectively with between 30% and 100% of maximum filling volume. Although designed for blending of dry materials, they will handle liquid addition with ease. Consisting of twin drums with counter-rotating rotors fitted with specifically angled paddles, this design, combined with the calculated rotor speed, gives rise to the unique fluidised zone mixing. • Operating at low speed means that even fragile constituents such as cornflakes, can be mixed. • When higher shear is required, machines with built-in Tulip Knives are available. These are fast-rotating, angular knives Gramec Mixers

that will chop up lumps and agglomerates which may either be present or form during the mixing process.

I

n the early 1990s, Gramec purchased the licence to manufacture the patented and world-wide known Norwegian High Precision Forberg Twin-Shaft Paddle Mixer and added the Forberg Drying System licence a

few years later. These were first called Gramec-Forberg Mixers and Dryers, but nowadays are simply referred to as Gramec Mixers and Dryers. “Some of our well-known customers here in South Africa are Bokomo, Sasko, Premier Milling, Simba, Nestlé and Truda Foods but we have also exported units to the US, Mexico, UK, Portugal, Belgium, Russia, Oman, Sudan, Kenya, Nigeria, Malawi as well as all our neighbouring countries,” Colleen Ellefsen points out. Gramec manufactures 12 different sizes of mixers ranging in size from 20 to 5 000L batches in mild or stainless steel. These can be tailor-made to the customer’s requirements by the addition of spray bars, inspection doors and tulip knives. They are used not only in the food industry but also for feed, plastic, chemical, fertiliser, cement, ceramic, abrasives and many other industries requiring precision mixing. “Our mixers blend precision homogenous mixes within a minute or so, thereby saving up to 60% of electricity costs,” she explains.

• The unit can mix micro ingredients as small as 5g per tonne (5 parts per million) with precision. This means that the mixture will be identical, no matter where the sample is taken. GRAMEC DRYERS Ideal for drying powders, granulates and filter cakes, homogeneously with a high thermal efficiency. Several processes are possible with the same machine – mixing, coating, drying, sterilisation and granulation. ROTARY VACUUM COATER The ideal machine for core coating - getting a liquid inside a product instead of surface coating, with a typical cycle time of 4 to 6 minutes. GRAMEC PIN DISC MILLS These have proved to be extremely popular in the baking industry, particularly in the biscuit production sector. Model GPM-37 is ideal for milling maize, biscuit rejects and for milling granular sugar into castor/bakers sugar. Other applications include the milling of beans, grains, salt and spices as well as similar commodities.

Mixers are largely hassle free and most are still in use decades later. Minor maintenance is easily carried out by the customer and Gramec is always ready with help and advice should any issues arise. •

What if

food packaging were carbon-neutral?

Go nature. Go carton. Food packaging plays a critical role in getting food safely to consumers around the world. But it can also cause problems for the planet. What if all food packaging came from plant-based materials and didn’t impact the climate? At Tetra Pak, we already have paper-based carton packages with reduced climate impact. But we won’t stop there. Our aim is to create cartons made solely from plant-based materials that are fully renewable, fully recyclable and carbon-neutral. It’s all part of our journey to deliver the world’s most sustainable food package. Learn more at gonature.tetrapak.com

Grisdale said that another shift in the business focus since COVID has been the exponential growth of e-commerce, which has created strong demand for labelling for food distribution, particularly home deliveries. We have also experienced growth in other sectors, such as tagging solutions for the pricing of fashion items. The company has a national presence with channel representatives in all major centres in South Africa through its sister companies in the Bidvest Group, as well as industry partners. Provide protective products Clean all shared or public surfaces such as workstations, kitchens and bathrooms before use. Growing research shows that wearing masks can save lives, which means manufacturing companies must keep these essentials on hand throughout their facilities including disposable masks and gloves; disinfecting wipes; hand sanitiser with at least 60% alcohol and tissues and paper towels. Automate cleaning tasks Floors are high-contact surfaces, but not a well-known vector for spreading coronavirus. Automating facility cleaning on low risk areas frees up maintenance crews to focus on high-touch surfaces, like shared areas and equipment. They have more time to tackle labour-intensive processes like treating or cleaning holding tanks or other missioncritical assets.

Keep your distance Social distancing rules under the pandemic say to maintain a distance of 2 to 3m 6 at all times. Storage and warehousing locations may require new signage to indicate safer, one-way traffic in and out of the area. Plexiglass shields between workstations may contain the spread of contagion. Workstations should also be moved or reconfigured so employees on the line can carry out their functions and exchange workpieces without close contact. Stagger shift start times This helps avoid congestion at entrances and time clocks, and therefore the kind of close, prolonged exposure that can easily spread the virus. If this isn’t realistic, it’s important to think about how and when traffic flows through your facility. Placing additional time clocks or implementing touchless “punching in” could set everyone's minds at ease. Implement pre-shift screening Pre-shift screening can help flatten the curve. It typically involves asking workers whether they’ve experienced COVID-19 symptoms in the last 24 hours and could include taking their temperature to weed out any fevers. It gets employees in the habit of being mindful of their own bodies and screening themselves for symptoms without being prompted.
