United Way York Region aims to set a new fundraising record in this year’s campaign.

Forty teams gathered around the stage at the annual Toromont CAT Dragon Boat Festival at Seneca College’s King Campus yesterday as United Way CEO Daniele Zanotti announced the organization’s $8.26-million fundraising goal, accompanied by tambourines and vuvuzelas.

The crowd cheered, anticipating the start of the festival that pushes York Region’s business community to cross the finish line in support of the organization.

The annual event has kicked off the United Way’s fundraising campaign for close to a decade.

Last year’s campaign raised a record $8.18 million.

The school’s award-winning wind ensemble, led by band director Sandi Chasson, was joined by pipes and drums band students, three music alumni, four teacherchaperones and several parents on a whirlwind invitational tour of the European capitals.

Each member of the group arrived home Tuesday with Olympian-sized smiles, said Ms Chasson, who created a “British-inspired” 35-minute musical program.

“It was life-altering,” she said. “We were welcomed with open arms. The kids felt like rock stars. It’s a trip I’ll never forget.”

The combined band performed at several venues, including Exhibition Road, a large pedestrian mall in the cultural heartland of London and London Live at Victoria Park, a 30,000-seat outdoor theatre adjoining the Olympic Park. It also played the Weymouth Bayside and Peninsula festivals and two performances at the

We hate to rain on your back yard party, but fresh-air cooking can be anything but wholesome.

Whether it’s the carcinogens from charred meat, the fumes you inhale with chemical-laden charcoal lighter fluid or the truckloads of plastic cups and cutlery piling up in the landfill, lighting up the barbecue can be toxic for you and the planet.

But it doesn’t have to be.

With a few simple changes to how you grill, you can enjoy goodies outdoors and still do good for the outdoors (and your family’s health) at the same time.

STEP ONE: CHOOSE THE GREENEST COOKING METHOD It’s especially important you cook conscientiously on hot days, when air quality impacts people with breathing difficulties, Lung Association air quality co-ordinator Connie Wong says. She recommends using natural gas or propane. They produce less air pollution compared to charcoal grills.

Instant-light charcoal and lighter fluid can also add toxins to your food. A good alternative is a chimney starter, Ms Wong says.

BIC has a new product, called FlameDisk, that is an alternative to charcoal. It uses ethanol — a renewable resource — as the main fuel ingredient, is recyclable and the company claims it burns cleaner, with low volatile organic compound emissions. It can be found at Walmart, Home Hardware, Sobeys and Mac’s for $5 to $7.

If charcoal is your thing, Newmarket Nature’s Emporium executive chef Marwan Dib recommends either pure lump wood charcoal or charcoal made with coconut husks.

Produced from the coconut palm tree, which is plentiful in Indonesia, the latter is available at Ontario Gas BBQ in Concord. Owner Duff Dixon says his store also sells Maple Leaf charcoal, which is made from government-sanctioned forestry wood.

You can also investigate cornburning grills, fueled by dried corn kernels, a renewable energy source, or the new hydrogen-powered grill (bit.ly/PifoCT) produced by a California company. It sells for $495 US. Solar-powered cooking is anoth-

If you like the idea of the slow food movement, this method fits well, since it takes hours to cook, but leaves a light eco-footprint.

Shoresh Jewish Environmental Programs in Thornhill has built a solar oven from reclaimed material — plywood, old windows and sleeping bags — and children build pizza-box ovens that get warm enough to melt cheese on a bagel, director Risa Alyson Cooper says.

But if you’re sticking with the standard gas grill, environmentalists suggest you purchase one that will last and take care of it. Cheryl Rak of the Meat Merchant in Stouffville, suggests cleaning with a wire brush, vinegar and water and protecting your grill from the elements with a cover.

Community grills are another green option.

“For the amount of grilling we do, does it make sense that every house on the block has one?” Ms Cooper says. If you’re already firing up the grill, she suggests calling the neighbours; it’s a chance to share the heat and maybe some back yard conversation.

STEP TWO: CHOOSE EARTH-FRIENDLY FARE “It’s not just how you grill, but also what you grill,” Ms Cooper says.

To keep your eco-footprint small, Fiona Wood of the York Region Environmental Alliance recommends vegetarian fare, using local, organic fruits and vegetables from farmers markets or community-supported agricultural programs or purchasing food with Ontario-grown stickers.

In an ideal world, you’d grow your own organically, but that’s not always possible. York Region Food Network executive director Joan Stonehocker can’t grow veggies in her shady back yard, so she and a friend share a community garden plot a 15-minute bike ride away and fill it with a rainbow of produce to

For those who prefer meat, Ms Rak suggests buying from a butcher carrying meat sourced locally and, ideally, grain-fed or organic. To keep fumes to a minimum, choose meat that cooks quickly — hotdogs, sausages and sliders — she says.

For best results, make sure your meat is at room temperature. After marinating it in the fridge, allow meat to sit on the counter for 25 minutes. This will allow for even cooking and quicker time on the grill, she says.

Barbecuing veggies at the same time as your meat also reduces grill time. Potatoes and corn can be microwaved to quickly pre-cook and then finished up on the grill.

Another way to minimize cooking time is to focus on fresh, Mr. Dib suggests. Try making salsa to top up quick-cooking fish, for example. A rack of lamb, cut into chops, (marinated with rosemary, lemon, olive oil and garlic) is another favorite fast-cooking meal, as are kabobs (try pineapple with pork in an olive oil, garlic, lemon/vinegar marinade).

He also marinates his meat with antioxidant herbs, such as rosemary, to reduce the amount of chemical buildup on food.

STEP THREE: HOST AN ECO-FRIENDLY COOKOUT Danielle Cawthorne of Newmarket keeps a big plastic bin, filled with cutlery, plastic plates, bowls and cups collected from secondhand and dollar stores, ready for outdoor get-togethers.

“When the picnic is over, there’s no fuss. All the dirty dishes go back in the bin and we take them home to wash.”

MORE IDEAS If you don’t have enough reusable cups and cutlery, borrow from neighbours or ask your guests to bring their own. If you must go for disposables, look for compostable options.

Skip plates altogether: plan finger food or wrap food up in pita or collard greens.

Place recycle and compost bins somewhere handy so guests can scrape and toss with ease.

Go for a well-planned potluck (to reduce wasted food) toted in reusable containers.

Send guests home with leftovers.

Masking tape labels ensure fewer cups are dirtied or tossed.

Rather than plastic water bottles, fill pitchers with water or juice made from concentrate. Rather than cans, use large two-litre bottles for drinks.

Man drowns at family reunion

The 49-year-old Mississauga man who drowned in the waters off Sibbald Point Provincial Park in Georgina yesterday was attending a family reunion, York Region Police Sgt. Gary Phillips said.

Paramedics and police called to the scene at 6 p.m. pulled the man to shore without vital signs.

He was pronounced dead at Southlake Regional Health Centre.

According to witnesses, the man was snorkeling offshore from a portable dinghy and began to struggle, Sgt. Phillips said.

Police have not released the identity of the man as next of kin has yet to be notified.

Bandit robs jewelry kiosk York Regional Police need your help identifying a man who robbed a Vaughan

The man went to the Gold Buyers kiosk at Vaughan Mills at about 8 p.m. and told an employee he was armed with a gun and demanded cash.

Police are looking for a black man, 20 years old, six-feet tall with a medium build.

Southlake recognized for outstanding patient care

Southlake Regional Health Centre received the highest rating for safety and quality of care.

Every three years, Accreditation Canada, an independent body comprising 600 health experts from across the country, evaluates hospitals using specific criteria.

The hospitals can be refused or granted accreditation.

Accredited facilities can receive two other honours for having outstanding standards of safety for patients and staff and a high quality of care.

The Newmarket hospital has achieved the rare exemplary accreditation, making it one of two hospitals in the Central Local Health Integration Network and one of a handful of health organizations across the country in

“It is really exciting to have two hospitals in our area with this coveted designation,” he told staff and volunteers during a 90th anniversary celebration earlier this week. “You all deserve to celebrate.”

The recognition is the ideal way to energize the health team at the hospital as it takes on the development of its new strategic plan over the next six months, he said.

To receive the accreditation, five surveyors had free run of the hospital for a week.

They were armed with a checklist of 2,000 criteria, broken down into eight categories such as safety, work life and accessibility, and 33 essential practices they assessed through observation and interviews with staff, patients

and their families, quality and acute services vice-president Helena Hutton said.

The hospital met 98 per cent of the 2,000 criteria and all 33 practices.

While hospital staff is excited about the accomplishment, it remains aware there is always room to improve.

“We can do all the firsts in the world, but when it comes down to it, safety and quality of care are our primary focus,” Ms Hutton said. “We are always looking to do better.”

I don’t know who decides where they put handicapped parking spots, but it really annoys me when they are placed farthest from the door at place such as the new TD Bank in Keswick. At the Bayview Plaza in Richmond Hill, they are out in the parking lot or on a hill close to the building, which makes it really tricky for someone with a walker.

It seems businesses have them because the law says so, but does anybody care that they aren’t really convenient for the disabled?

Walking an extra 30 feet can be hard for the elderly and disabled.

People getting sick of green destruction

P

reventing illness is the best way to get health care costs down.

So why aren’t governments doing more to protect the environment?

We’ve long known environmental factors contribute to disease, especially contamination of air, water and soil.

Scientists are now learning the connection is stronger than we realized.

Research shows 60 per cent of emerging infectious diseases affecting humans — those that rapidly increase in incidence or geographic range — start with animals, two-thirds from wild animals.

Lyme disease, West Nile virus, Ebola, SARS and AIDS are just a few of the hundreds of epidemics that have spread from animals to people.

A study by the International Livestock Research Institute concludes more than two million people a year are killed by diseases that originated with wild and domestic animals. Many more become ill.

According to an article in the New York Times, “emerging diseases have quadrupled in the last half century.”

The increase is mainly due to human encroachment into and destruction of wildlife habitat.

For example, one study concluded a

David Suzuki 4-per-cent increase in Amazon deforestation led to a 50-per-cent increase in malaria because mosquitoes, which transmit the disease, thrive in the cleared areas.

Another example from the article shows how interconnected life is.

Development in North America has destroyed or fragmented forests and chased away many predators.

This has led to a huge increase in white-footed mice, which carry Lyme bacteria. The mice are not good at removing ticks and their larvae and so the ticks pick up bacteria from the mice and spread it to other mammals, including humans.

Because the number of Lyme-infected ticks has multiplied, more are

transferring the disease to humans.

Global warming is adding to the problem. A study in the journal Nature, impact of regional climate change on human health, notes heart attacks due to heat waves, altered transmission of infectious diseases and malnutrition from crop failures can all be linked to a warming planet.

And economic and political upheaval brought on by climate change can damage public health infrastructure, making it difficult for people to cope with the inevitable rise in sickness, according to a study in the Archives of Medical Research, Global warming and infectious disease.

This is costly to the economy as well as to human health and survival. The World Bank estimates a severe influenza pandemic could cost the world economy $3 trillion.

Environment Canada says air pollution alone costs the Canadian economy billions of dollars a year because of increased health care costs, missed work days and reduced productivity.

A key solution, according to the One Health Initiative, is to look at the links between human, animal and ecological health and manage our activities in a sustainable and holistic way.

The United States-based initiative is bringing experts in human, animal and environmental health together to study these links.

Another promising area of research is natural capital evaluation. Although it’s difficult, if not impossible, to put a dollar value on the numerous services nature provides, leaving them out of economic calculations means they are often ignored.

Forests and greenspaces filter water and store carbon. Urban greenspaces provide cooling and protection from storms. Destroying these systems often costs much more than profits gained from exploitation.

With the world’s human population now at seven billion and the demand for technology and modern conveniences increasing, we can’t control all our negative impacts.

But we have to find better ways to live within the limits nature and its cycles impose. Our physical health and survival and the health of our economies depend on it.

Last year, 10,000 youths stayed clean and in school with United Way-funded mental health and addiction support, crisis counselling and educational programs, Mr. Zanotti said.

He told the dragon boaters they kicked off a campaign that helped 5,000 people find jobs, affordable housing and healthy food and 46,000 people receive help close

to home and crisis counselling during family transitions.

A safe shelter was found for a mother and her children, who were fleeing violence, he said.

“People are giving and volunteering because they see the change United Way is driving,” he said.

United Way York Region serves all nine municipalities by supporting agencies that meet urgent needs.

United Way also works on tackling the root causes of social issues.

The last four days of the trip were spent in Paris, where the musicians performed at St. Lambert Square before taking in some sights.

“If there’s a lesson here, it’s always to have a plan B.” Still, the participants said only good things about their many experiences, from people’s generosity, special event access, an invitation to exclusive Canada House, the airline waiving excess baggage fees and the “camaraderie and brotherhood”.

Pride in the students is lasting, Ms Chasson said.

“I’ve been teaching for 35 years and still get up every morning loving what I do,” she said. “The students were such incredible ambassadors for the school and Canada. I’m very proud of them.”

OBITUARY: Stones was off coast of Japan when Second World War ended

Merchant marine lied about age, enlisted when he was 15

Clay Stones, 86, served in the merchant navy from 1943 to 1946 and when spotted around town in his uniform, there wasn’t a doubt he was decorated.

The Royal Canadian Legion Dominion life member died Aug. 10. Mr. Stones was also a recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal, a former district officer, zone commander and president of the Royal Canadian Legion Milton Wesley Branch in Newmarket, fourth and third degree Knights of Columbus and Newmarket Veterans Association life member.

He was a great neighbour and he and his wife were viewed as the parents of the neighbourhood, according to Sharon and John Herman.

Susie Albi describes him as a wonderful person who never frowned and was the best storyteller she ever met.

Every year, Mr. Stones would visit local schools and educate students about his experiences serving and explain the importance of Remembrance Day, Newmarket Ward 1 Councillor Tom Vegh said.

Mr Stones told students he joined the merchant marines at age 15, Mr. Vegh said, recalling a presentation he attended last November. “He lied about his age and forged his mother’s signature.”

Mr. Stones asked students to think about their brothers and sisters going off to fight a war before turning 16.

Mr. Stones described the 1940s as a time when boys were forced to become men quickly and, as young as he was, his duties were to transport supplies and men to the front lines.

He spoke of the men who died and the push to carry on into enemy waters to provide supplies to other soldiers.

The ship on which he was serving was off the coast of Japan when the Second World War ended.

“The kids always ask if he saw the bomb,” Mr. Vegh said.

Mr. Stones heard what had happened as soon as the bomb had been dropped, but did not see it personally.

He always maintained one war was one too many for a person to see.

Not only was Mr. Stones dedicated to his community, but he was also a family man. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rita, children and grandchildren.

Keith Profit is expecting hundreds of residents to attend an unveiling commemorating Newmarket’s heritage.

As part of the Christian Baptist Church congregation’s 190th anniversary, the historical building on Main Street will unveil a memorial window in the name of Alexander Muir, the Newmarket elementary school teacher who wrote the song The Maple Leaf Forever.

“We are quite excited,” event organizing committee member Mr. Profit said. “The window is quite the sight and we can’t wait to share it with the community.”

It was 1874 when then-Governor General Frederick HamiltonTemple-Blackwood, commonly known as Lord Dufferin, laid the first cornerstone of the oldest church that remains standing in Newmarket today.

Mr. Muir had just finished writing his patriotic song and his school choir was on hand at the event to sing it for the first time.

“As I understand it, it was quite the celebration,” Mr. Profit said.

“We hope to recreate some of that excitement.”

The window, which spans from floor to ceiling, is made of the same stained glass as the original windows and will display three maple leaves is a reminder of times past and to help carry the historical stories into the future.

The $10,000 needed to make and install the window was collected at an Alexander Muir class reunion before the original school was demolished more than three decades ago, Mr. Profit said.

Everyone is welcome to join the church for the event Sept. 29 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Canadian country music star Paul Brandt will headline the 24th Wild Wild West Hoedown at the Magna Campus in Aurora.

He is joined on the bill by Beverly Mahood, Matson Tweed, the Good Brothers and Danielle Bourjeaurd.

“Paul Brandt will close the night in a real party fashion,” Magna for Community coordinator Steve Hinder said. “It’s a great way to the end the evening.”

Ms Mahood has performed at Hoedown before and will be this year’s emcee.

Matson Tweed is a band coming up from California.

Dressage gets fans in mood for Paralympics

With the Paralympics just around the corner, a Schomberg facility is getting into the spirit.

KR Equestrian, a therapeutic riding facility in King Township, just outside Newmarket on Hwy. 9, will host a para-dressage competition Aug. 26.

“There aren’t as many paradressage competitions compared to other equestrian competitions and there aren’t many venues for para-athletes, so we thought, ‘Why not host one here?’” KR Equestrian co-owner and competition organizer Dave Hanley said.

Dressage involves training horses to a high level.

In competition, the goal is to show a horse carrying out natural movements on request.

“To someone who has never seen a dressage competition, it might look a little odd,” Mr. Hanley laughed. “With lack of a better description, it is kind of like making the horse dance around.”

Para-dressage is based on the same rules as a traditional competition, but riders are divided into different classes based on the level of their disabilities.

Riders create competition routines for the horses and they are judged on how well the horse is controlled throughout the routine.

Acclaimed dressage and paraequestrian official Elaine Potter will judge the competition.

Spectators are welcome to cheer on the athletes.

The competition begins at 10 a.m. and runs throughout the day.

Mary "Cynthia" Scott (nee Fleming) After a brief struggle with cancer, Cynthia passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at the young age of 69 at Southlake Regional Health Centre.

Left to mourn her is loving husband Edward (Ted) Scott, loving daughter Joanne, sister and best friend Norma Sharma (Tony), loving aunt of Craig Sharma (Megan) and devoted great aunt of Krista, Claire and Nolan Sharma, Kevin and Michael Gare and her furry family Tucker, Chance, Simon, Harley and Holly. She is the daughter of late James and Mary Fleming and loving and devoted aunt of late Scott and Christine Gare.

Loving sister-in-law of Shirley Pelligrin and family, Margaret Sabourin and family, Doug Scott and family, Dawn Brady and family, Christine Scott and family, the late Bill Scott and Bob Scott, and daughter-in-law of the late Harold and Marg Scott. She will also be missed by her dear friends Donna, Darlene and Pat, all her aunts and cousins and especially Sue Chappell.

Thanks to the nurses who helped make her comfortable during her ordeal, especially Mary, Carey and Heather.

Cremation has taken place. At Cynthia's request, there will be no funeral. A Memorial Service will take place at a later date.
