CYCLING ETIQUETTE

THE RULES OF THE ROAD, TRAILS, SAFETY, AND CAMARADERIE WHEN CYCLING BY DAN BROWN

ROAD CYCLING STAY ON THE RIGHT (in the Philippines; stay left in some countries) at all times unless overtaking. Going slow on the left-hand lane or far into the middle of the road where the cars are trying to pass is unacceptable and irritates motorists. This can cause potential hazardous moves such as swerving. It also means the cars will come closer to the cyclist when having to overtake on the wrong side. Same goes for cyclists in groups. Keep it organized. Stay to the right whenever possible. USE SIGNALS. Let everyone AROUND you know what your intentions are before you act. Putting out your arm to indicate a turn, or pointing out debris or obstacles are

GOT A QUESTION? 04

important, especially during group rides. It’s totally okay to be vocal and loud during the ride as this keeps everyone safe.

ALWAYS LOOK BEFORE YOU DO A U-TURN OR WHEN YOU RE-ENTER THE ROAD FROM A STOP. Just because the tricycles do it doesn’t mean that it’s okay for cyclists to follow suit. Wait for a safe distance and be predictable and consistent. DO NOT ‘CREEP’ OR INCH FORWARD AT AN INTERSECTION. In many ways, this one is for car drivers but is also applicable to cyclists. If you are a motorist stopped at an intersection, do not inch forward. Instead, stay fully stationary the whole time until the cyclist has passed. You cannot assume that the cyclist won’t just suddenly move forward. Same rule goes for cyclists: Stay fully stationary until the vehicle has passed. Keep the brakes on.

TRAIL/OFF-ROAD CYCLING ALWAYS STAY TO THE RIGHT. The trails are often narrow, and as a result, it can become frustrating if the biker hogs the whole trail. If you are a slower rider, be sure to keep it to the right whenever you can, especially when a rider is approaching from behind.

DO NOT LITTER! One of the reasons we like to use the trails is because it’s a cleaner environment, so let’s help keep it that way. Keep your trash in your bike box and dispose it in a proper receptacle. Same goes for you mountain bikers who stop for a smoke, do not throw your cigarette butts on the trail. BE FRIENDLY. A little hello as well as some encouragement go a long way and the camaraderie is one of the strong points of MTB’s so let’s work on keeping that culture alive and kicking. Whether cycling on the road or on the trails, always be CONSISTENT, PREDICTABLE and follow the rules. Everyone will be safer that way. See you on the road/trail!

i, friends. I think it’s time to remind and update people on the correct etiquette for cycling on the road and on the trails. It’s important, especially with so many newbies out there, to follow some basic rules, as your actions affect everyone. These may seem simple and obvious to some, but when I head out on my bike every day, I encounter the same mistakes. So this is information that needs to be learned and shared.

3 BENEFITS OF A GOOD BIKE FIT 4 MINIMIZE PAIN If you have

the wrong bike fit, you can expect an uncomfortable ride, and accumulating aches over time

4 IMPROVE PERFORMANCE

The correct bike fit increases your pedalling efficiency and power output by achieving your optimal cycling position.

4 IMPROVE HEALTH You’ll reduce your chances of a long-term injury and can sustain efforts to make cycling your exercise of choice for better health.

GOING LONGER AND STRONGER

WHY DYNAMIC STRETCHES ARE A MUST TO IMPROVE STRENGTH AND STABILITY IN YOUR LEGS. BY SAUL ANTHONY SIBAYAN THE PROBLEM: Have you ever felt that your inner thighs are tight after a run or bike training session? This is because the outer part of your hips and thighs have become very active. The body senses this and tries to compensate by tightening your inner thighs. These are efforts to restore balance to the muscles in the upper legs, but the tightening actually gets worse. THE FIX: To correct this, you need to strengthen your inner thighs. You do this by stretching to release the tension and improve flexibility and mobility. Master the side lunge first before combining it with the cradle stretch for a more dynamic movement. By combining the cradle and the side lunge stretch, you emphasize strengthening the outer part (lateral) and the inner (medial) part of your hips and thighs.

HOW TO DO THE STRETCHES:

THE SIDE LUNGE

01 Stand with your feet and knees together. 02 Take a big step with your left foot to the left side. 03 Lower your thigh toward the floor. You’ll feel a stretch of your left inner thigh. 04 Make sure that your left knee doesn’t go past your toes by sticking

your butt out when you lower your thigh. Always keep your right leg relatively straight (if you feel pain on your right knee, it’s not straight enough). 05 Keep your chest out to promote a flat back. 06 Push off through your left foot to return to the starting position.

GOAL: Do this for 5 to 10 repetitions per leg for 1 to 2 sets. If you’re having a hard time doing this stretch, you can make this easier by skipping steps 1 and 2, and assuming a wide stationary stance instead. To know about The Cradle Stretch, go to:http://www.endurance.ph/ performance/perf-sc/dynamic-stretches-to-improve-your-leg-stability

SHIFTING GEARS, GOING GLOBAL

IN A MALE-DOMINATED SPORT, ARIANA DORMITORIO HITS THE TRAILS HARD. THANKS IN PART TO TALENT, SHEER DETERMINATION, AND EXPERT COACHING FROM HER FATHER DONJIE, THIS YOUNG CYCLIST IS READY FOR THE BIG LEAGUES.

ooks can be deceiving. The petite, pretty 20-year-old is a monster on the trails, owing to a childhood spent riding two wheels. Ariana Dormitorio, an aspiring bet for the 2020 Olympics in Japan, recalls how it all started. “I was 10 when I started mountain biking. My dad had his offseason from remote-control racing and he got invited by some of his friends to ride. He bought three bikes for our family to use,” says Ariana. Father and daughter bonded by riding the trails inside their village and around the metro. Two years later, her father chanced upon a mountain bike race announcement on the Internet and they joined. “I was late for the kids’ registration so I participated in the women’s open category. I was the youngest at the age of 12 and placed 6th out of 12, competing with women twice my age. From there, I was challenged to join other races because I wanted to win first place,” Ariana says. Though it seemed like she was born to ride, It wasn’t an easy journey. In March 2012, in a mountain bike race in Cardona, Rizal, she had a very bad spill. “I had a really bad accident where I thought I was already dead,” she says.

“People told me that when I crashed, my head hit the rocks first and I wasn’t breathing. Luckily, the competitor behind me revived me. All I can remember is that I woke up on a stretcher, being carried to the ambulance. My right leg was all black because it was bruised badly, I had a concussion and my arms had wounds. “But after four days, I forced my dad to let me join his ride with his friends because I was really bored at home. From there, I felt that mountain biking is more than just a hobby. It can be something I can really excel in,” Ariana says.

CYCLING FOR THE WIN

Excel, she did. Ariana’s numerous gold medals prove it, and her recent first-place finishes are big-time. On November 6 in Kuching, Malaysia, she was the Asia Mountainbike Series Female Elite Grand Champion for the 25-km XCO race format. This is a cross-country Olympics race format that consists of a lap around a short circuit and with a distance of 25 km total. It’s the only discipline which is in the Olympics, and high-level mountain bike skills are required. She finished the three legs in one hour and 12 minutes. Ariana beat Thailand’s top mountain bikers Nuntana Supuksorn and Phetpraphan Warinthorn who placed 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Ariana describes her experience at the Asia Mountainbike Series in Malaysia as one of the toughest races she participated in. It was challenging course with steep uphills and downhills, and it was slippery because of the rains. “There were sections where we had to carry our bikes going up or down the trail. Good thing that during our training days back in the Philippines, my dad, who is also my coach, included practicing carrying our bikes on the trail.“ Ariana is also the Overall Champion for the Cross Country World Marathon Series in Nuvali, Laguna last November 19, 2016. She won with a time of 5:16:12 for the 90-km XCM race format. Compared to the XCO, that XCM or Cross Country Marathon is a race format which has a usual distance of 65 to 100 kilometers. The Nuvali XCM World Series qualifier which she won, earned her a slot to the 2017 World XCM Championships in Germany. But Coach Donjie says Ariana has no intention of joining the Germany race. “She is concentrating on XCO format races only, which is the format used in the Olympics, Asian Games, and SEA (Southeast Asian) Games,” he says. Her target A-race: 2017 UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) under-23 XCO World Championship in Cairns, Australia in September 2017. Her Kuching win on November 6 and a gold in leg 1 of the 25-km XCO Asian Mountainbike Series in Ranau, also in Malaysia last August 31, with a a strong finish of 1:16:58. Imagining Ariana storming the trails

of these three races is enough to leave anyone breathless. She herself says she’s overwhelmed by the achievement. She isn’t one to rest on her laurels, and aims higher. She has already racked up 40 UCI points, and will represent the country in next year’s World Mountain Bike Championship. The UCI, as cycling’s global governing body for races, also ranks elite athletes based on the points garnered in UCI sanctioned races. Ariana’s holy grail is the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which will be the first time that the Philippines will join the MTB competition. She will be 24 by then, just at the right age for the competition, where the average age is 29. She has four years to hone her skills against cyclists from countries that dominate the 25-km XCO such as Switzerland, France, and Germany. As 2017 approaches, the Olympics are not far away. Ariana knows time flies. “A lot has happened and things are moving way too fast,” she says. “Looking back at where I started, I could not have imagined

Hope Christian Academy in Quezon City on March 2013. Because she’s driven, she and her father decided to let college wait. “We totally want to focus on cycling for now. Luckily, I’m not going to school yet because I’m pretty sure that I won’t be able to enjoy my college life if I bike and study at the same time,” Ariana says. Full-time training for cycling is “my job at the moment.” On free weekday afternoons, she hangs with her friends. Weekends are for family. Ariana has three younger sisters, Alyssa, 18, Lexi, 8 and Aerice, 4. Of the three, the two youngest are also starting to ride and enter biking competitions with dad Donjie encouraging them along. Donjie remembers Ariana as a young, sports-minded girl. “She has always enjoyed all the sports that I do, like soccer, table tennis and badminton,” he says. But when she started competing, and decided to handle her training, he realized he had the gift for coaching His greatest lesson learned is to: “keep evolving and adjust with the times.” “Through the years, I have developed our own personal training system that was based on the actual needs of Ariana during her race. It is this same modified system that we are sharing in our training school, The Coach D Mountain Bike Efficiency Training System. We accept students from all over the country. Some are even overseas. I teach them via Online coaching,” Donjie says. He launched his coaching school (www.facebook.com/CoachDMtb) on April 2016. He coaches 28 students from Manila like Qatar, Iloilo, Cebu, and Palawan.

myself to be the person I am today. I’m very thankful to all of those who helped me get to where I am, especially to my dad, because he’s the one who encouraged me to take up mountain biking,” she says.

FAMILY TEAM

She says that her father, Donjie, 47, will continue being her coach in the runup to Tokyo. “I could not ask for a better coach. He’s the best one out there, in my opinion,” Ariana says. Having dad as coach, is having access to guidance 24/7 not just on mountain biking skills but on life too. “He taught me that In order to make things happen the way you want it to be, you should think it,” she says, adding it’s a principle that has worked ever since for her. “The level of trust is different because of the father and daughter bond,” says Donjie. The combination of discipline and values she’s learned from her coach and father has worked even in academics. She graduated as valedictorian of her high school class at

Life isn’t just about cycling. “When I’m not out in the woods or inside the gym, you’ll see me at home, singing a lot! I also like to bake and cook, or or go longboarding in our backyard. I like to shop for clothes. People only see me as a girl who bikes but little do they know that I’m very girly,” she says. Ariana, who goes for shirts, shorts, and sneakers when not in her cycling kit, even has a very supportive boyfriend. “I met him in the trails actually. He’s an Enduro rider so between us, there is no competition at all”. She wants to dispel the notion that mountain biking is not for “girly girls.” “Women shouldn’t really be afraid of the things that may happen because as long as you know how to handle the situation and that you know that when you crash on soil, it doesn’t really hurt, then there’s really nothing to be hesitant about.” Ariana also extols the benefits of riding a bike. “Traffic is a really big problem nowadays. People don’t realize that cycling is one of the best solutions. Not only that that you get to exercise, you’re able to solve traffic problems and save Mother Earth.”

ARIANA SAYS: ALL I NEEDED TO KNOW ABOUT LIFE, I LEARNED FROM MOUNTAIN BIKING. →There are a lot of obstacles along the way but you’ve just got to conquer them with the help of people who believe in you. →If you face people that will pull you down, ignore them -- at all costs. Do not let them get to you and just keep on doing what you love to do. You can never please everyone anyway. →If you really want something to happen, always imagine that it has already happened. →Never doubt yourself because having even the slightest doubt is a form of negativity and that won’t do any good. →Be confident in who you are and what you are capable of. →Remain humble and down to earth at all times. →The universe will reward you with things you’ve never even imagined of happening.

CHAMPIONS OF SPORT o reach a goal as lofty as the Olympics, hard work and constant training are a must. Ariana and her father train five to six times in a week, often at her favorite MTB trail in Timberland Heights, San Mateo. “There are two to three times where I train twice a day, riding my bike in the morning and doing gym workouts in the afternoon.” The upside, she jokes, is that she has no specific diet. Her father encourages her to eat any food she likes, in order to replenish and recover properly from her everyday training. Also crucial to her journey on the long, hard, and sometimes bumpy road to mountain-biking glory is a solid and reliable bike that enables her to perform well.. She started out with a Giant Anthem for her first bike. Now that she competes at the top levels, her bike of choice is a 2017 S-Works Stumpjumper Carbon Hardtail from Dan’s/Specialized Philippines. She knows the details that give her the edge: “It has Fox Shox F-32 Float 100mm Step Cast front suspension. It is very light and has very aggressive geometry. It has a short wheelbase too.” These give her the maneuverability, speed, and the comfort to nail the trails. She is happy to have Dan’s, the exclusive distributor of Specialized bicycles in the country, as a partner. The advice of an expert like Dan’s in pursuing her mountain bike goals is vital, “Getting a professional bike fit or know your bike size first before buying a mountain bike and gear is necessary,” says Ariana. Knowing her fit, size, and capabilities, Dan’s has her bike set up to be aggressive yet durable, and comfortable for long races. It’s not all about winning, it’s also about being the best that you can be on the journey. Dan’s supports Champions of Sport and Ambassadors of Athleticsm. Ariana and Donjie are on Dan’s stellar list of partner athletes along with the Guidicelli family—Matteo, Gianluca, Giorgia, and Paolo.

to more challenging technical routes. It’s a good training ground for newbie mountain bikers before they take on the challenging trails of Timberland in San Mateo.

Challenges: Filinvest trail can put to the test the bike-handling skills of experienced mountain bikers. There’s a section called the “Log Stairs.” I fell off my bike on my first attempt but with the proper guidance of Coach Donjie Dormitorio, I was able to bike down the Log Stairs perfectly.

CORDILLERA MOUNTAINS IN BENGUET & LA TRINIDAD

(recommended by TJ Isla)

A must-try because: If you love climbing, this is your trail. You’ll go through mossy forests, pine forests, and traverse a trail that’s 2,150 meters above sea level with very beautiful views. Challenges: The first 8 km is all climbing so prepare your climbing legs. The downhill from Mt. Ugo peak is really dangerous and not for newbie riders. Be careful with the pine

Challenges: With elevation levels at 1,500-2,000 meters above sea level, the altitude and weather can be unforgiving and should be considered in training. The weather is extreme, from

MT. MAYON, CAGSAWA RUINS, DARAGA, ALBAY

(recommended by TJ Isla)

A must-try because: The Cordillera mountain range is literally bike heaven. It’s an epic ride and adventure of a lifetime as you climb up and ride down the mountains with breathtaking, stunning landscapes—rice terraces, cascading rivers/streams, mountain peaks and valleys, awesome sunrise and sunsets. You’ll find peace on two wheels in the Cordillera, on all kinds of trails, fire roads, singletrack dirt, rocky downhill cliff, ridgeline climbing, and village roads in remote barangays. You'll find yourself lost but at the same time, at home with the simple mountain culture.

FILINVEST TRAILS, ALABANG, MUNTINLUPA A must-try because: “Sunday Biking at Corregidor” by Sun Cruises (Seaside Terminal, Sunrise Blvd., SM Mall of Asia Complex) is a whole-day guided tour of Corregidor using your MTB. It’s fun and relaxing mountainbiking around the island that will take you through moments of Philippine history. It's Great for photo-ops because of its scenic backgrounds. hot to cold and vice-versa. Proper planning/preparation is key, aside from training. You must be comfortable with long climbs and long descents. Don’t forget to stop, smell the flowers, and just take it all in.

A must-try because: What better reason than to ride on and around an active volcano, onto the lava trails with the majestic Mayon as a backdrop? The trails and terrain are out of this world. It’s like riding off-road on the moon’s crater amidst a lush forest, river streams, deep into the 6-km danger zone. You’ll be riding in awe of this world wonder while thinking of the

A must-try because: Guimaras is mountain biking heaven. Every weekend, hundreds of Ilonggo mountain bikers flock the beautiful island for its rolling singletrack, fireroad and technical trails. Plus, there are two bike parks in Guimaras. You can choose from over a hundred kilometers of connecting trails from around the island. Guimaras has been a known venue for mountainbiking events such as downhill, enduro, cross-country, and 4x races. Challenges: Guimaras has two bike parks. Trails are interconnected around the island. As you cycle on the singletracks and cross rivers, you’ll come across mango farms and nice beaches that can even be a destination by itself and where

you can dip after cycling. Check out Alubihod Beach, Tatlong Pulo Beach, and Pulang Pasayan Beach.

Challenges: With it’s varying and unique landscape and terrain, the Mayon trail is both for the extreme and recreational rider who’s looking for wild ride. The trail is mostly lava rocks and sand, so MTB skills will come in handy. The trail goes from the ruins and deep into the forest, for a combination of rocks, singletracks, fire road, and village roads.

PHILBIKE EXPO 2016

NOVEMBER 25-27, 2016 SMX CONVENTION CENTER, MOA

PHOTO COURTESY OF PHILBIKE EXPO AND MONSTERS CENTAUR PRODUCTION INC.

More than 100 international and local brands in cycling and fitness, encompassing a diverse range of bikes and accessories for riders of all skill levels and disciplines, were showcased in the third year of the PhilBike Expo, the country’s only worldstandard trade and consumer cycling show. Phil-Bike Convention Inc., brought together cycling enthusiasts and first-timers alike, giving them the chance to check out the very best and latest that the industry has to offer. Expo-goers were treated to an incredible demo from international powerhouses Kenny “The Magician” Belaey, Japanese “Superkids” Yu Shoji and Takumi Isogai, and their mentor Flatland innovator and three-time flatland world champion, Viki Gómez. With a career that spans over two decades, there are just a few cyclists in the world as decorated as Kenny Belaey. In 1998, he won the UCI Cadet World Championship and the BIU Cadet World Championship. This jumpstarted a string of championships he maintains to this day including multiple Junior European (2000-2001) and Elite World Championships (2002, 2005, 2006, and 2010). At the PhilBike Expo, he wowed the audience with a demonstration of “Balance” atop various obstacles. His latest video project of the same title saw him crossing a slackline on top of the French Alps. The “Superkids” showed off their incredible flatland skills before a tremendous crowd. Shoji is the first place winner of the 2015 Voodoo Jam and the second runnerup for the 2014 FlatArk Novice. Isogai was the first place winner of the 2014 FlatArk Expert and came in at 8th place for the 2016 FlatDev Pro. Also present in the expo were Canadian Geoff Gulevich, the Rocky Mountain Bicycle ambassador; Alessandro Colnago, the grandson of cycling-pioneer, Ernesto Colnago and marketing manager of Colnago. For over 60 years, Colnago has established itself as one of the premier cycling brands in the world. The event also included games, contests, and raffles. Expo visitors tried their hand at the interactive simulations all across the venue and some had the opportunity to freestyle with BMX athletes at an impromptu BMX Street Jam on the final day.
