Host Professional Message The 88th New Jersey PGA Professional Championship Dear Fellow NJPGA Members, Welcome to the 2016 New Jersey Section PGA Championship at Plainfield Country Club. The Plainfield Country Club Membership and Staff have graciously offered their club for our biggest competition of the year. Plainfield CC has a long history of hosting national, regional and state championships and looks forward to adding to that tradition. I would like to thank the Plainfield CC Membership and my fellow staff members for their hospitality and willingness to host us on their incredible Donald Ross gem.

Plainfield CC has previously hosted our Championship in 2004.

The club also hosted the 1978 U.S. Amateur, 1987 U.S. Women’s Open and the 2011 & 2015 Barclays. Plainfield CC looks forward to the PGA Tour’s return in 2020. Under the guidance of renowned Course Architect Gil Hanse, the course has been completely restored/renovated to Donald Ross’ original design. The course has also been lengthened in several areas to accommodate today’s distance standards.

Plainfield CC was recently placed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Battle of the Short Hills took place on and around the property in June, 1777.

The NJPGA Professional Championship will serve as a qualifier for the 2017 PGA Professional Championship. With a large field of over 160 players, the NJPGA will send 10 of our Members to Sunriver Resort, Oregon with a chance to qualify for the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. We are so fortunate for the continued support of our Section Sponsors.

Challenges Await at

early a year after hosting the 2015 Barclays, Plainfield Country Club is set to host the 88th New Jersey PGA Professional Championship. This is the second time that Plainfield will host this major event, with its last time being in 2004.

“We’re very excited,” Scott Paris, NJPGA President said. “It’s our biggest competition of the year and for the New Jersey PGA. We’re going to do everything to make it a very high level competition as the host club.”

Ranked No. 24 as Golfweek’s Best Classic Courses of 2016, and No. 4 in the 2015-16 Golf Digest Top New Jersey Courses list, the 95-year-old Donald Ross designed course will offer challenges to players with difficult green slopes, strategic bunker placements, and challenging short holes.

Paris, who is also the Director of Golf at Plainfield, will try to be the third Plainfield PGA Professional to win this major event.

Former Plainfield Professionals who won the title include Johnny Kinder in 1937 and 1942, and John Buczek in 1973.

Paris, who finished in a tie for 32nd last year, doesn’t think he will be facing pressure playing on his home course.

“I’m just trying to play well in every event I play in,” the 48-year-old said. “There might be some staff members paying attention to how I play, but I don’t really think about it.”

Plainfield’s course first had its glimpse on the national stage in 1978, when it hosted the 1978 U.S. Amateur and the 1987 U.S. Women’s Open. It hosted The Barclays in 2011 and 2015, and will be a future host of The Barclays again in 2020.

Every year, Plainfield and the NJPGA partner for an Assistant’s Event at the end of May. This year, however, will be the biggest event the NJPGA has hosted at Plainfield since the Turnpike Cup in 2013.

Field: 158 Players Champions in the field: 12 On the Line: Section Professionals will compete for 11 spots to qualifty for the PGA Professional Championship, which will be contested on June 18 - 21 at Sunriver's Resort Crosswater and Meadow Courses.

Format: This major tournament is a 54-hole stroke-play event. All players will compete in the first 36 holes of stroke-play on September 13 and 14, and the field will be cut to the top 60 and ties for the final round on September 15.

Did You Know?

Leighton Calkins, who served as Plainfield’s mayor from 1915-1920, developed the golf handicap system that is used today. Calkins is also believed to be the creator of the term “par” for golf, to describe the average score among golfers.

---------------------------------------------Hillside Tennis Club was the original name of Plainfield when it opened it 1890 before Donald Ross came in and built the 18-hole course in 1916.

---------------------------------------------The 2011 Barclays hosted by Plainfield was shortened to 54 holes after Hurricane Irene made its way up the Tri-State area on Sunday.

Final Stop Before the Fall Finale and Turnpike Cup The top 40 players following the New Jersey PGA Professional Championship will qualify for the Fall Finale at Mountain Ridge, which will be played Sept. 26-27. Alex Beach of Ridgewood is the defending champion, who claimed his first major championship with an even-par 213 to defeat Brooklake's Dave McGovern by two strokes. This summer, Beach has put

himself in position to overtake Dan Kinn of Acushnet for the No. 1 spot atop the Player of the Year rankings.

The top 10 players from the Player of the Year and top two players from the Senior Player of the Year after the Fall Finale will also automatically qualify for the Turnpike Cup, which will be played at Commonwealth National in Horsham, PA, Oct. 12.

MOUNTAIN RIDGE TO HOST 2017 NJPGA PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP Mountain Ridge Country Club in West Caldwell, NJ, will return as host of the NJPGA Professional Championship in 2017 for the first time since 2009.

Mountain Ridge has hosted this Championship four times in its history, with the first time being in 1962.

Frank Esposito, who is a four-time NJPGA Professional Championship winner, won both major events at Mountain Ridge in 2007 and 2009.

Wes Ellis, who was a PGA Professional at Mountain Ridge in 1962, won the first year

the West Caldwell course hosted the event.

Ellis is the only player to win the NJPGA Professional Championship four consecutive years when he did from 19611964.

Ed Whitman, now the Director of Golf at Knickerbocker Country Club, also won at Mountain Ridge in 1990.

Three different PGA Professionals at Mountain Ridge have won the NJPGA Professional Championship in its history.

Ellis, Gary Head in 1975, and Michael Burke in 1992, 1999, and 2001.

The par-71, 7120 yard course officially opened on April 17, 1912 for play. It is one of the 11 Donald Ross designed courses in New Jersey. Mountain Ridge has hosted numerous championships under the NJPGA, Metropolitan Golf Association, New Jersey State Golf Association, and the United States Golf Association.

SUNRIVER RESORT HOSTS 50TH PGA PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP The PGA Professional Championship will be returning to Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Oregon, for the first time since 2013.

The top 11 players from the Section Championship will qualify to compete against the top PGA Professionals across the country and have a chance to qualify for the 99th PGA Championship. The last NJPGA Professional to qualify for the PGA Championship was Brett Jones in 2015.

In 2013, our Section Professionals who competed at Sunriver include Brian Gaffney, Brett Jones, Jim McGovern, Brent Studer, Craig Smith, Lou Kubisa, Sam Kang, Mat McKeon, Paul Poandl, Frank Esposito, and Todd Rickenbach.

Sunriver previously hosted this championship in 2001, 2007, and 2013.
