New Hope Film Festival, Ltd. 6542-A Lower York Rd., #219, New Hope, PA 18938 June 1,2010 Dear Moviegoer, When a group of artists and I founded the New Hope Film Festival nearly 18 months ago, we scarcely imagined the groundswell of enthusiasm we'd generate. Yet now, heading into our first annual event, we have 86 spectacular films from over 16 countries to present. Many of these films are world and U.S. premieres and only one has theatrical distribution - in Europe. Greg Robson of residential mediapundit. com calls us "Pennsylvania's Best-Kept Secret." If you are an avid movie fan or simply love a good time, come out and join the fun during our June 21-27, 2010 event. It's a unique chance to meet filmmakers, all of whom are excited their film was competitively selected among 268 submissions. Although a handful of these talented artists are local, most are traveling from places as far-flung as Hollywood, New York, Canada, New England, the American South, India, Puerto Rico and Germany. This is an ambitious, authentic event, and we have already announced ourselves in Hollywood's legendary ''Variety'' magazine. The films we are presenting are not available in theaters, on television, on N etflix, or through any other forms of distribution. Filmmakers submit their films to cutting-edge festivals like ours precisely so they can be noticed by the industry. By coming out to see films, you have a chance to participate in the process of deciding what are is available in our culture, and you do this through interactive Q&A sessions with filmmakers and by voting on the highly coveted Audience Favorite awards. . The Directors of the New Hope Film Festival are proud to make a difference through bringing this world-class showcase to Bucks County, and by doing something as simple as getting one ticket and watching a show, you, too, will make a difference. I encourage you to visit www.newhopefilmfestival.com to watch the previews, and most of all, I look forward to seeing you at the festival in June! All the best,

Doug Whipple Chairman New Hope Film Festival

Screenwriter Mark Rosenthal making the most of his opportunity By Lou Gaul CALKINS MEDIA FILM CRITIC

Any producer seeking an artist with the "write" stuff can merely call Mark Rosenthal. The Bucks County resident, who is lending his impressive expertise to the New Hope Film Festival (June 21 through 27) as the event's adviser, has worked with major stars and powerhouse directors since 1976 when he started his screenwriting career after moving to California. According to the 60-year-old Rosenthal, who grew up in Philadelphia's West Oak Lane section, relocating to the Golden State, where he lived for 25 years, was a leap of faith. lIis confidence was reinforced by his love of words and reading and his willingness to take a chance against all odds. "I went to college (Temple University) and graduate school (University of Vermont) and then got a doctorate (University of the Pacific)," Rosenthal says during a telephone interview. ''At some point (after getting an education), you have to take a risk with your life. "It's true of anyone who wants a life in the arts. Your friends are getting

Screenwriter Mark Rosenthal is the event's adviser.

steady paychecks, but that doesn't happen to you. If you go into the art of film, you have to move to Los Angeles, which means you have to leave your friends and family behind. "Then you move and find you're competing with all of the people coming to Los Angeles (to join the film industry). People who want to write films often want to do everything but take a risk (by cutting all ties with family and friends and pursuing a career)."

Rosenthal moved to California "cold" with no safety net in terms of income or employment. His professional life changed when he wrote director Mark Rydell's "The Legend of Billie Jean" (1985), starring Christian Slater (in his first movie) and Helen Slater ("Supergirl") in a story of a teenage girl who challenges some local punks. ''At that time, every university didn't have a film department," he says. "You had to work to find out how to write a screenplay." On the basis of "The Legend of Billie Jean," Rosenthal came to the attention of Michael Douglas, the producer-star who was seeking someone to pen a sequel to "Romancing the Stone." Douglas hired him to write "Jewel of the Nile" (1985), which co-stars Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito, and Rosenthal was on his way in Hollywood. "Michael Douglas was a ball to work with and a thoughtful person," he says. "He overheard me saying it was my mother's 70th birthday, and he sent her flowers." Rosenthal quickly learned the realities of penning scripts. "The screenwriter is a different ani-

mal than anyone else in films," he says. "If you want to be a screenwriter, you have to ask yourself if you're a writer. If you're a writer, you're a reader and love words." Rosenthal, who is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, has toiled on some high-profile motion pictures. They include: "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," starring Nicolas Cage, directed by Jon Turteltaub ("National Treasure"), and opening July 14. "It is not based on the Mickey Mouse cartoon (in 1940's 'Fantasia')," he says. "It's not based on anything. The story is about a modern sorcerer in present-day Manhattan and a confused young man who doesn't realize he was meant to be the sorcerer's apprentice." "Supennan IV: The Quest for Peace" (1987) with the late Christopher Reeve returning as the Man of Steel in an adventure, directed by Sidney J. Furie ("The Boys in Company C"), about the danger of nuclear weapons. "Chris was upset that 'Superman III' had been a misguided attempt to be a comedy with Richard Pryor," he says.

Screenwriter Continued from Page 3 "He was upset at the way it came out. "My favorite memory of Chris is walking down Columbus Avenue in Manhattan, and anyone who stopped him, he gave time to. He didn't brush off anyone. Chris was a down-to-earth guy, and what happened to him was such a tragedy." "Planet of the Apes" remake (2001), directed by Tim Burton and starring Mark Wahlberg. "Working with Tim was one of the most fun experiences I've had, even though it (the filming) was chaotic," he says. "Tim is completely open and honest about who he is. He's an artist and everything you see in his movies starts as a sketching he did. He's flighty sometimes and sometimes you're not sure he's listening to you (due to his level of concentration), but he's a pleasure to work with and still a kid at heart." "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" (1991) with Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner as Mr. Spock

and Capt. Kirk and directed by Nicholas Meyer ("Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan"). "With a rigid franchise like 'Star Trek,' you have to be very careful about what you do," says Rosenthal, who co-wrote the story. "There are certain inherent elements that you have to service." Rosenthal's other writing credits include "Mercury Rising" (1998) with Bruce Willis, "Mighty Joe Young" remake (1998) with Charlize Theron, "Desperate Hours" remake (1990) with Mickey Rourke, "For Love or Money" (1993) with Michael J. Fox, "The Beverly Hillbillies" (1993) with Lily Tomlin, "Mona Lisa Smile" (2003) with Julia Roberts and "Flicka" (2006; a remake of "My Friend Flicka") with Maria Bello and Tim McGraw. He did "additional writing" for "I, Robot" (2004) with Will Smith, "Eragon" (2006) with John Malkovich, and "The ATeam" (opening Friday) with Bradley Cooper, Jessica Biel and Liam Neeson. Rosenthal also wrote and

directed "The In Crowd" (1988), a 1965-set tale about a young star on a popular Philadelphia dance program. Most of Rosenthal's Hollywood experiences have been positive ones, though two high-profile actresses caused some sour moments. "Let's just say that Julia Roberts ('Mona Lisa Smile') and Kathleen Turner ('Jewel of the Nile') are not my favorite people," he says. Rosenthal, who lives in Solebury, with his wife, Kim, and a daughter and a son, hopes the first New Hope Film Festival attracts a lot of attention. He believes it will become an important part of the arts community. "Those in New Hope like to think of it as an artistic area," he says. "But we haven't had a film festival last more than a couple of times. A place like New Hope needs a film festival, because the people in the area have a certain sensibility and celebrate the arts. Without artists, New Hope would just be another suburb." For Rosenthal, a workday

consists of writing during the morning hours. He never has a problem being inspired. "I wake up in the morning and have 10 ideas," he says. "They flood into my head. The real skill (in screenwriting) isn't having a creative idea. The skill is in the execution ofthe idea." He also strongly believes that creating humorous material is

5

the most difficult challenge for a writer. "It's always harder to write comedy," he says. "There's a provocative statement - 'It's harder to write a good episode of "Cheers" than it is to write "Schindler's List" - that offends people. But it's easy to make people cry, and it's hard to make them laugh."

New Hope Film Festival founder banking on staffs experience By Lou Gaul CALKINS MEDIA FILM CRITIC

To launch the New Hope Film Festival, Doug Whipple knew he had to create an Ateam to handle the challenges of such an artistic event. For Whipple, the founder and chairman ofthe festival, which will screen 86 films from more than 16 countries from June 21 through 27, it was imperative to gather local talents with varied backgrounds, artistic insights and, of course, a love of cinema. Here are Whipple's thoughts on the talented individuals who have been essential to the vision, creation, launch and operation ofthe first New Hope Film Festival: THOM MICHAEL MULLIGAN Mulligan, who serves as the

executive director of submissions, is an independent film producer and performance artist who resides in Southern California. His numerous credits include the films "Callous" (2009) and "Cleaner"(2008); plays such as "The Philadelphia Story," "Play It Again, Sam" and "Same Time, Next Year"; and numerous soap appearances, including "General Hospital," ''Another World," "As the World Turns," ''All My Children," "Ryan's Hope" and "One Life to Live." "Thorn brings invaluable independent film experience and a Southern Californian's perspective to New Hope," Whipple says via e-mail. MARIANNE SPEISER A resident of New Hope for

four decades, Speiser, who serves as executive director of communications, has been involved in promoting the borough of New Hope, helping it attain regional, national and international acclaim as a cosmopolitan village. She has composed music for television, regional theater and off-Broadway productions, as well as providing the scores for two independent films. Speiser sees the New Hope Film Festival as having an international flavor and, as she says in the press materials, celebrating

"the talents of artists from all over the world." DANNY SAILOR Sailor, who serves as director of submissions, is a retired government employee with an encyclopedic knowledge of film. He screens the submissions for the festival. "The amazing thing about Danny is his collection of more than 2,000 movies," Whipple says. ''As our dedicated movie screener, his opinions carry weight within our organization, and many of the filmmakers who made it into the festi-

val this year can attribute their success directly to him. Danny has loads of style and strong ties to New Hope, too." MARK ROSENTHAL Rosenthal, who serves as an adviser to the festival and has deep ties in the New Hope area, offers guidance and suggestions regarding the final selection of films. He also provides advice on the world of film. His screenwriting credits include "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" (1991)

By Terry A. McNealy NEW HOPE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Change is inevitable. Anyone who likes 'history is keenly aware of this. Change can be slow or fast-paced. It can be subtle or drastic. Local com-

munities experience such changes all the time. If local industries go out of business, a small town can be devastated. But not necessarily. The borough of New Hope provides an example of how an old town whose economy was based on industry has morphed into a community that draws its strength from the arts, tourism, and a unique spirit of independence and nonconformity. Today, New Hope has the image of a tourist town with a heritage profound in its roots in theater, art and the antiques trade. It was Rot alway:s so.,

'A hundred years ago, New Hope was an industrial town, with mills that employed its few hundred citizens. Around that time, a few artists moved into the neighborhood, attracted by the beauty of the Delaware River valley, the old stone farmhouses, barns and mills. Few of the people who worked in the mills probably noticed. They were busy grinding grain, manufacturing paper, or quarrying stone. The products of their work found their way into the wider world by means of canal boats or the railroad. Today, the gristmills are ruins or registered historic buildings, the paper mills have been converted into condominiums and shopping areas. The canal is a state park that is ever more

History Continued from Page 13 difficult to maintain, and the railroad carries mostly excursionists. New Hope got its start because of the two things that drove its economy throughout its first two centuries: transportation and water power. Indeed, during the time of William Penn, a thousand acres ofland were surveyed for a man named Robert Heath in 1700, covering the site of present-day New Hope. This large tract of

land was divided into two 500acre parcels. One became known as the "Mill Tract," and the other as the "FenyTract," anticipating the economic future of this locality for the next two centuries. In the early years of the eighteenth century, Solebury Township was just beginning to be divided up into land grants that were settled by pioneer families that were mostly of English origin and members of the Society of Friends, or Quakers. The same was true of those who were settling across the Delaware River in New Jersey. Robert Heatlunay well have chosen the location of

his land grant because it included a stream that came to be known as Ingham Creek (fi:om the name ofa prominent landowner a century later), which provided a strong enough flow to power mills. Even in the earliest years of settlement, sawmills were needed to assist in the clearing of the virgin forest and make the building materials that were in great demand. Likewise, as soon as the land

was cleared, farmers began planting fields of wheat and other grain crops. This required gristmills that ground the grain into flour, both for the subsistence of the pioneer families themselves, and as the beginning of a cash crop that could be marketed in cities like Philadelphia. Overland transport was primitive, and roads were little more than trails

15

through the forest. Wagons and carriages were a fond memory of the old country, but few existed in rural Pennsylvania. A local road leading to Heath's mill is still called Sugan Road, so called for the "suggans" or saddle-bags used by farmers riding on horseback to carry their grain to the mill for grinding. Robert Heath died in 1710.

For many people, the fun of film festivals comes from celebrity-watching, party-going and movie-viewing. Documentarian Candace McLean plans to take a slightly different approach. The debuting Canadian filmmaker, who wrote, produced and directed "When Police Become Prey," sees the upcoming New Hope Film Festival as an opportunity first for learning and second for networking. "It's a thrill to be coming to the festival, because I'm going to do as many documentaries as 1 can to learn as much as 1 can," McLean says during a recent telephone conversation from her home in Calgary. "I'd love to do more documentaries, and 1 want to meet other people who make them." "When Police Become Prey," which will be screened at 12:30 p.m. June 27 at the New Hope Arts Center, began as a book McLean was writing. She was interested in a case in which two Canadian police officers - former Saskatchewan constables Dan Hatchen and Ken Munson were put on trial for dropping an aboriginal individual off in an isolated place to freeze to death. McLean decided that people are reading less and going to the movies more, so she decided to make a documentary. "I want to dispel the myth that has been broadcast around the world - that Saskatoon police officers have been dropping aboriginal people off where they don't want to be dropped," McLean says on her website (whenpolicebecomeprey.com). "Saskatoon police have not caused the freezing death of any aboriginal people." For McLean, the $150,000 documentary has been somewhat of a family affair. Her musician-son, who lives in London, helped her to edit the footage and score the film. Now, she is writing a book,

After the mules and the railroads, the artists settled in An enterprising young businessman named Benjamin Parry came to town around 1781. He owned mills on both sides of the Delaware. One of them was called Prime Hope Mills, near Lambertville. That mill burned down in 1790, and Parry built a new mill at the mouth of Ingham Creek shortly afterward, calling it New Hope Mills. Parry promoted the town like no one before him. He helped organize the New Hope Delaware Bridge Company, which built the bridge to Lambertville in 1812. It was the second bridge built across the Delaware, preceded only by the one that united Morrisville and Trenton. Parry was also a prominent figure in bringing another engineering achievement to New Hope, the Delaware Canal. Actually, the Delaware Division was only one part of an ambitious system of canals and related transportation links intended to connect the state's natural resources, such as coal and iron,

to manufacturers and markets. Construction of the Delaware Division took place between 1827 and 1832. The decades that followed were boom years for New Hope, as boatyards, stores and hotels thrived, new mills were built, and canal barges streamed through town, laden with coal, lumber, building materials and other cargo. An outlet lock was built to allow canal boats to cross the river to Lambertville, where they could continue their journey on the Delaware and Raritan Canal across New Jersey toward New York. Inevitably, the canals succumbed to their great rival, the railroads. Traffic on the canal dwindled, and it became a picturesque but outmoded curiosi-

ty. A railroad line to New Hope opened in 1893, but it was not a major route, though it did provide local farmers will easier access to Philadelphia markets. Around this time, a group of artists began to settle along the river, such as William L. Lathrop, Daniel Garber and Edward W. Redfield. Although their homes and studios were scattered along the river valley in places like Lumberville, Centre Bridge, and Phillips Mill, their group became known as the New Hope School, and the town acquired a reputation as an artists' colony. Another new era began in 1939, when a group of people interested in the arts purchased the old Parry gristmill and transformed it into the Bucks

County Playhouse, which thrived in the heyday of summer-stock theaters, bringing many prominent actors and actresses to its stage. Many plays were tried out here before moving on the Broadway. The town settled into its new role, not as a mill town but as a destination

for tourists, antique collectors, theater audiences, and art aficionados. This article appeared in the Spring 2005 issue of Bucks County Town & Country Living, reprinted with permiSSion.
