by Valerie Patterson, May 2015
“We are now seeing even law-andorder conservatives recognizing that we cannot do what we’ve been doing for the last 30 or 40 years. They can’t build prisons and produce a safer society. It is going to take something very different.” — Dr. David Gilbert, associate professor, University of Texas, San Antonio and executive director, National Association of Community and Restorative Justice.
filmmaker Cynthia Fitzpatrick shows us in her documentary, Inside Peace. The film profiles an innovative “Peace Class” program used at Dominguez State Jail in San Antonio, Texas, introduced in 2007 by Capt. Lorenzo Carter, the institution’s education captain.
Director and producer Fitzpatrick secured the cooperation of the warden, gained the trust of prisoners (“I was a little white lady with white The United States is a world leader hair”), lugged carts of equipment in on many fronts, including the rate of and out of the prison and edited miles incarceration for adults. Our prison of footage to create this engaging, population has grown 500% over the fascinating profile of several inmates. past 30 years to reach 2.2 million She allows them to tell their stories — adults, or about 716 per 100,000 there are no surprises — drugpeople. More than 50% of all prisoners addicted parents, poverty, poor released return to prison within three decision-making skills, no positive role years, either charged with a new crime models. Along the way we meet the or for a technical parole violation.

shines through as she weaves these stories together and follows the inmates through their release and reintegration into their families and society.
The peace class is based on the teachings of Prem Rawat, an Indianborn, U.S.-raised guru of a sort. His foundation partially financed the production of this film, yet it’s clear that Fitzpatrick had free rein to tell this story which was shot on location in various Texas cities. “What (the inmates) got through the class was a deep sense of self worth, learning to live in the third minute,” Prem Rawat’s term for the here and now, said Fitzpatrick. She remains in touch with the former inmates featured in her film and will attend the screening with some of them at the New Hope Film Festival.

Mind Over Matter
(Continued from p. 4)
the focus of Powerful Medicine: Simply Magic, a short film that will screen with Inside Peace on Saturday, August 1st at Stephen J. Buck Memorial Theater in New Hope. Popular illusionist Kevin Spencer suffered head and spinal injuries in a car accident in 1988. Bored with the physical and occupational therapy he was assigned in his recovery, he realized magic, and the dexterity, concentration and repetition it requires, would be an ideal treatment tool for himself and other patients.
Fast forward 25 years or so to this film, which was made over a span of
two years with the help of director Mwita Chacha, and financed entirely by Spencer and his wife. It is a showcase for “magic therapy,” and Spencer’s subjects, Trent and Tristan, who are young patients recovering from brain injury and hemiplegia, respectively. This uplifting, 22-minute piece makes a strong case for the utility of learning how to perform illusions in place of more traditional forms of therapy.
“We are both committed to improving the lives of those with disabilities, advocating for their inclusion in global society, and educating people about the amazing things they can do,” said Spencer. “Too often we focus on what we believe they can't do instead of
highlighting the things they can do.” Like Inside Peace, Simply Magic teaches us that the power to overcome life’s challenges doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it just takes a new approach.
