Our 5th annual event features a record number of Official Selections from 16 countries, thanks in part to the successful launch of our 1st annual Script Competition. We are honored by the generous support of our sponsors, including our newest one, LaCroix Sparkling Water. Three types of passes are available for those who want to explore everything we have to offer, but for most of our patrons, we recommend a selective approach.

make it a story that didn’t have an agenda,” she adds.

In what is a casting coup for Loeb, Bragg is portrayed by actress Theresa Russell, who has more than 50 films to her credit, including Black Widow, The Razor’s Edge, and Being Human. This role is a departure for Russell, who is best known for bringing smoldering sex appeal to many of her roles. She is the most seasoned actor in the film, and her down-home accent, off-the-rack wardrobe and earnestness add convincing realism to her portrayal of Bragg.

Loeb says Russell was completely down-to-earth and a true professional throughout filming on location in West Virginia. “She handled the rustic conditions well,” says Loeb.

Loeb herself underwent something of a transformation

in the 16 years between her initial reporting trip to West Virginia and the completion of her movie in 2012. She educated herself about every major aspect of film making, from scriptwriting to production to financing and distribution, all the while shepherding her script through numerous rewrites until filming began at Bragg’s first home in Pie. To produce a 100-minute film on her first time out surely was quite an undertaking for Loeb, but she managed to get it produced and distributed, in the process moving a mountain of her own to tell this story that she is so passionate about.

Another group of women who want to make a difference in their home communities is the subject of No Problem! Six Months With the Barefoot Grandmamas.

This thoroughly uplifting

documentary from filmmaker and documentarian Yasmin Kidwai follows groups of African women from Liberia, Malawi, Zanzibar, South Sudan and other countries as they train for six months at Barefoot College in Tilonia, Rajasthan, India, to become solar engineers, return home, and bring both light and improved safety to their villages. Most have not had many educational opportunities and are illiterate; they are the backbones of their families, and leaving them behind for six months requires courage.

Kidwai captures the incredible energy and diversity of her home country in this 56-minute piece. We see Barefoot College (cont. p. 18)

as a wellspring of opportunity, not only for the women from around the world who are fortunate enough to attend, but also for the men and women who are employed by the school, for many of them began life in India with little hope of improving their educational and economic destiny.

Kidwai, founder of Delhibased Springbox Films Ltd., earned a degree in sociology and has been making documentaries focused on development and women’s issues (by happenstance, she says) for most of her 14 years as a filmmaker. While working on a project for the Government of India, Kidwai learned about Barefoot College and was energized by its stories of hope, the idealism behind it and the lifechanging opportunities it provides students. The school was founded in 1972 by Sanjit “Bunker” Roy, a young Delhi University graduate who was mortified by the conditions many less fortunate Indians lived with, and Meghraj, a local farmer and resident of

Tilonia. They sought a way to “meld urban knowledge and rural wisdom” so that even illiterate citizens could be trained to provide a particular skill to their villages. And so Barefoot College has done, charging no fees, with many thousands of graduates who are now helping to provide clean water, solar energy,educational opportunities and improved healthcare in villages that dot the globe.

The story presented some challenges, says Kidwai—first off, finding the right combination of women. “The different languages everyone spoke in the beginning were a big hurdle. At one point it got very frustrating as I thought we could not tell the story if the women were not able to freely communicate,” she says. “In fact, after some time I realized I didn’t need words or language to communicate with them.”

But even with language barriers between filmmaker and subject, teachers and students, this film very successfully portrays the

students’ growing confidence and camaraderie, and surely will leave audiences asking why the Barefoot College model isn’t more widely used in the developing world.

“No Problem! is an attempt at acknowledging, honoring and celebrating everyday heroes—women who through sheer audacity have dreamed an impossible dream—to get light for their villages, and have willingly come out of their homes for the first times in their lives to a different continent,” says Kidwai. “To see them and their teachers cross the many barriers that separated them was fascinating, as also was the layer-by-layer realization that no one is really different.”

The proceeds for the event go to the Kala-Bhavana Students Aid and Welfare fund. This documentary peers into a part of Indian life not typically seen by foreign tourists.
