Security and independence

Ware is a small, attractive town in the east of Hertfordshire with a fascinating past and a heritage to be proud of. The Romans had a settlement here and foundations of several buildings, including a temple, have been found.

Ware prospered for many years as a coaching town, due to its location on the Old North Road, less than a day’s journey from London. When this trade declined the town began to thrive from the production of malt and for 500 years Ware was England’s premier malting town.

The town has many historic buildings including The Priory founded in 1338, St Mary’s Church, old coaching inns and the 18th century riverside gazebos. One of the town’s most intriguing attractions is

Scott’s Grotto, a Gothic garden building constructed in the 1760s by the poet John Scott.

The River Lea no longer carries commercial barges but is well used by pleasure craft of every description and is very popular with anglers. On the north bank of the Lea, many of the gazebos have been restored and are now seen as one of the town’s unique attractions.

Today, Ware has a good selection of small shops and boutiques and the High Street is always busy, particularly on Tuesday, which is Market Day. Many small businesses thrive through the waggonways and above shops in the High Street and there are plenty of restaurants and pubs, for which Ware has always been famous!.

New River Court is situated on London Road, with access across a bridge over the canal. The development, which is within half a mile of Ware High Street, is ideally located for local transport and shopping facilities. Nearby Ware train station offers regular rail services into London.
