A cultural town, steeped with history Tonbridge’s history stems back to 1087, where it was first recorded in the Domesday Book and throughout the years has been subject to many notable events, including the building of Tonbridge Castle by Richard Fitz Gilbert de Clare, the cousin of William the Conqueror.

Tonbridge is believed to have been named due to the large number of bridges that crossed many streams within the town – the original name was ‘town of bridges’ Having largely retained its ‘old market town’ atmosphere, Tonbridge has many attractions for visitors and residents alike. These include the chance for summer picnics in the grounds of the 13th century Motte and Bailey Castle, the popular May Festival and Carnival, a variety of markets and art exhibitions, as well as the local leisure centre, swimming pool and sports ground.
