Further afield Iwade is less than four miles from Sittingbourne, a lively town with good amenities and transport links. The town has a range of shops, mainly focused on the semi-pedestrianised High Street and the Forum Shopping Centre.

There are branches of major brands, including Tesco, Asda, Argos, Boots and WH Smith, as well as smaller, independent stores selling everything from gifts and homewares to wedding outfits. There’s also a good selection of bars and restaurants, as well as the Avenue Theatre, which offers a wide-ranging programme of plays, musicals, cinema and concerts.

Just north of Iwade is the Isle of Sheppey, separated from the mainland by the Swale channel.

Steeped in maritime history and known as the birthplace of aviation, Sheppey has a pleasant coastline with several beaches, two of which have won Quality Coast Awards. A stunning array of bird life can be seen on the island, mainly at the Elmley RSPB reserve and the Raptor Viewing Platform at Capel Fleet.

Kent’s County Town, Maidstone, is just under 14 miles away. There you’ll find a much wider range of facilities, including the Fremlin Walk and The Mall shopping centres, which are packed with famous-name stores, plus the Royal Star Arcade for specialist clothing and gifts. The town also offers excellent nightlife, with plenty of pubs, restaurants and clubs, as well as a multiplex cinema and the Hazlit Arts Centre.

Close to Iwade there’s also plenty of opportunity to enjoy your favourite sports and leisure pastimes. Located right in the centre of Sittingbourne, the Swallows Leisure Centre has three swimming pools, fun water features, a state-of-the-art fitness suite, a crèche and a café. Several golf clubs in the area include the spectacularly set Sheerness Golf Club, founded in 1909 and once described by Golf Monthly magazine as ‘one of Kent’s best kept secrets’.

Maidstone Leisure Centre has five swimming pools, a fitness suite, a sports hall, two bars, a café and a children’s soft play area. Private leisure and fitness venues include David Lloyd and LA Fitness clubs. The town also has plenty of green space, including the 450-acre Mote Park, which has a lake, sports pitches, a children’s play area and a skate park.

Iwade has its own community primary school and there are many other excellent state and independent educational establishments in the area, including Sittingbourne Community College, which has academy status, two single-sex grammar schools (also in Sittingbourne) and historic Maidstone Grammar School, which is one of the most highly respected state secondary schools in the south of England. For higher education there’s MidKent College, which offers a wide range of academic and vocational courses.

Trains and buses run regularly from Sittingbourne to London, including high-speed rail services to St. Pancras via Ebbsfleet International. There are also services to Canterbury and the south east coast of Kent. The M2 motorway is just a few miles south of Iwade and also within easy reach is the M20, which connects Folkestone and the Channel Tunnel with the M25, Gatwick Airport and the Dartford Crossing.
