Unusually for English villages, Waterlooville did not exist before 1815 when, as legend has it, a new wayside inn opened. On it’s opening night, a column of weary soldiers, having disembarked at Portsmouth after the Battle of Waterloo, stopped at the inn to celebrate their victory. The inn was promptly renamed The Heroes of Waterloo, and gave the name to the hamlet that grew up around it. In the 20th Century it grew rapidly – between the 1950s and the 1970s it was the fastest growing town in the country.

From M27 East Continue on the M27 East until it becomes the A27. After approximately 1.75 miles take the exit for A3 (M) (signposted London).
