The maritime city of Southampton holds an important place in British hearts and history and is one of the country’s busiest ports. Southampton and great ships are inextricably linked.

From the Pilgrim Fathers’ Mayflower, to the tragic Titanic, to the liners of the golden age of transatlantic travel, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth are a few of the famous vessels that have been berthed and built here.

Southampton played a vital role in wartime. Ships from the port took part in the Dunkirk evacuations and troops embarked from the city to take part in the D-Day Landings. Not surprisingly, such a strategic location was also heavily bombed.

At the site of Centenary Quay itself, the Thornycroft shipyard was established in 1904 and for over 100 years produced craft ranging from paddle steamers to destroyers, submarines and passenger ferries.

From the closure of the shipyard, comes revitalisation in the form of Centenary Quay. The development retains its links with the location’s importance as a maritime centre, whilst making confident strides forward to meet the needs of today.

The riverside, once dominated by cranes and moorings, is now a place of recreation and inspiring views.

However, Centenary Quay is also designed to bring new prosperity to the area, becoming a sought after place to live and a destination for shopping, eating out and work. In particular, the new marine quarter will continue the traditions of maritime employment and enterprise that established Southampton’s place in history.

From Woolston station, journey times to Southampton Central are just fourteen minutes. However, the proximity of Centenary Quay to the city centre means that all the routes in and out of Southampton are within easy reach and because of its importance as a port, there are excellent links to the rest of the UK. The M27 links the towns and cities of the south coast, and runs just to the north of the city, while the M271 branches off and connects the city centre to the Western Docks. The M3 is the route from Southampton to London and also, via the A34 at Winchester, with the Midlands and North.

Southampton Central is the main railway station, offering routes to Portsmouth, Winchester, the Midlands and London, as well as the towns and cities of the West: Bournemouth, Poole, Weymouth, Salisbury, Bristol and Cardiff.

If you’re flying, Southampton Airport is your starting point for around fifty European destinations and you can reach the airport easily by bus or Southampton Parkway railway station.

Naturally, waterborne connections are part of the picture for Southampton travel. The city is the terminus for internal ferry services, which operate from Town Quay, and there are car ferry and fast catamaran services to the Isle of Wight and Hythe. A world of more exotic destinations can be reached too, for Southampton is, as ever, a home port for some of the world’s most luxurious passenger liners, including the world’s largest, Cunard’s Queen Mary 2.

THE PLACE TO INDULGE

Southampton has a thriving bar and restaurant scene, with venues for every taste, budget and occasion. Many of them can be found around Oxford Street, the cosmopolitan neighbourhood between the old city walls and the waterfront.

Local favourites include Olivetree, for classic dishes with a Mediterranean twist; the Oxford Brasserie, which has a Gordon Ramsey nomination for ‘Best Local Restaurant’; the traditional Thai Café; Dockgate 4 Bar and Grill, a contemporary style eaterie; and more formal dining at The White Star Tavern. Looking to the future, new places to eat and drink are planned for Centenary Quay.

Southampton has inspiring culture as well as good dining. Art lovers can browse in Southampton Art Gallery or the Millais Gallery, and movie fans indulge their interests at the Harbour Lights cinema. In addition to the established venues, there are civic plans to create a new cultural heart for the city, an area which will sparkle with arts, heritage, entertainment and events, in an architecturally memorable setting. Major projects include the Guildhall Centre, Sea City Museum and a new arts complex.

They are all part of the broader revival of Southampton, which will enhance local job opportunities as well as bring in visitor revenue.

This is a sporting city too. Southampton Football Club, aka The Saints, has their home ground at St Mary’s Stadium, across the river Itchen. The Rosebowl is the home of Hampshire County Cricket Club and also stages concerts for up to 35,000 people. And if you prefer your sports on water, Southampton’s proximity to the Solent means a day’s sailing is never too far away.

Its central location and good connections make Centenary Quay an excellent choice for commuters.

Southampton Central can be reached by train in about a quarter of an hour, and even London in less than an hour and a half. Motorway links to Portsmouth, Winchester and Basingstoke expand the options further.

You can spend less time travelling to and from work and more time at home with the family, when you make Centenary Quay your home. And, anyone currently studying at the University of Southampton or Southampton Solent University might consider stepping onto the property ladder here, and starting working life in this vibrant, go-ahead city.

From Junction 8 of the M27 head in a south westerly direction along Bert Betts Way. At the roundabout take the 3rd exit onto Bursledon A326 Road (A3024) heading towards Southampton.
