The charms of a market town in Wantage

Wantage is a small market town just a few miles south west of Oxford and is distinguished by being the birthplace of King Alfred the Great in AD849, and much later, the chosen home of poet John Betjeman.

Today it retains much historic character, combining a good range of modern facilities with fine old buildings and the original market square, complete with King Alfred’s statue.

It is a town popular with families, due to its high number of well regarded schools, which include King Alfred’s Community and Sports College and Wantage Church of England Primary School, both of which are very close to Scholars’ Place.

Wantage town centre is also close enough to walk to. It has an interesting selection of shops, pubs and cafés, many of them in the old square; as well as outlets catering for everyday needs, such as Waitrose and Sainsbury’s.

Festival, which celebrates art, music, poetry, countryside, crafts: in fact, all things Wantage.

Out in the countryside, close to connections

Wantage is surrounded by beautiful Oxfordshire countryside, situated at the foot of the Berkshire Downs in the heart of the Vale of White Horse. The horse, cut into the hillside at Uffington, has mysterious origins going back at least 3000 years, but lends a unique character to the Vale.

The Vale is peaceful and tranquil and can be explored on foot along the eighty-five mile Ridgeway Path. There are also many other opportunities for rural pleasures including riding, cycling, fishing and boating on the Thames or simply enjoying the many pretty villages and traditional pubs.

Other attractions in the area include the historic and the prehistoric.

Fourteenth century Great Coxwell Barn, and eighteenth century Buscot House and Ashdown House seem almost new when compared to the Iron Age hill forts and ancient burial grounds on White Horse Hill.
