Chorley is an historic market town whose wealth came principally from the cotton industry. Chorley's surrounding area has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. In 1250 the town was granted a market charter and to the present day it has two markets, the Flat Iron Market and the Covered Market. Each year, for one weekend, French market traders sell their produce in the town, with Chorley's merchants returning the favour in France. Chorley, with its location on the edge of the Lancashire Coalfield, was vital to the coal mining industry. Likewise, during the second World War, Chorley was home to a vital Royal Ordnance factory.
