The Location The small East Lothian town of Prestonpans is etched in historians’ minds as the place where Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Jacobite army defeated the Royal Troops of King George II in 1745. The name of the town, lying close to the shores of the Firth of Forth, is widely credited to local monks who used pans along the seashore to manufacture salt. Coal mining, brewing, brick making and pottery have all been important industries at one time or another to Prestonpans. Today, the area’s modern industries include electronics, chemical research and printing while agriculture remains important. It’s set in an area that’s a haven for tourism Prestonpans’ own historic architecture is of great interest and this includes its Mercat Cross, which is the only remaining one in Scotland in its original form and location. Prestongrange Industrial Heritage Museum on the outskirts of the town has also proved to be extremely popular with visitors. Tourism is a major industry and East Lothian is rightly praised as a golfers’ paradise with a total of 19 splendid and challenging courses - the most famous being Muirfield, home to the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. The course has hosted The Open Championship no less than 15 times since 1892 with South African, Ernie Els the winner when it was last staged there in 2002. In the summer months East Lothian hosts many local galas, festivals, fetes and agricultural shows. There are many places of interest to visit, including the Museum of Flight at East Fortune; the Bass Rock, a sanctuary for birds and the third largest gannetry in the world; the Seabird Centre at North Berwick.
