Haywards Heath as we know it today, really expanded when the London to Brighton railway line opened in 1841. The town finds its roots however, in the 13th century as heath and farmland and local legend says that it is named after a highwayman ‘Hayward’ who staged many of his raids on the heath. The land originally belonged to the Manor of Hayworth, which is perceived as the more likely source of the town’s name and Haywards Heath has since gone onto become one of the largest towns in West Sussex.

There are plenty of parks and open spaces in Haywards Heath from the modest Jubilee Gardens and Beech Hurst Gardens to Victoria Park and Clair Meadow, known locally as ‘The Heath’. Further afield Blunts Wood/Paiges Meadows Nature Reserve and Scase Valley Nature Reserve near Lindfield offer tranquil surroundings in which to unwind.

St Francis Park is within easy reach of the town centre with its many high street shops including Marks and Spencer and Sainsbury’s supermarket. There are many independent stores within the Orchards Shopping Precinct and on both Sussex Road and South Road.

If you like to combine your walk with sport, then where better to play a round than Haywards Heath Golf Club, which offers 18 excellent holes. For those who prefer a more active lifestyle, there are plenty of leisure centres, private gyms and sports clubs in and around the town centre, as well as access to swimming and equestrian facilities.
