Reading old and new Reading made its fortune from clothmaking, brewing and manufacturing industries. The arrival of the Great Western Railway in 1840 established the town as the largest in Berkshire and made it a key location on the London to Bristol route. Its travel connections, both by road and rail, are still excellent.

Sporting life and country life In the twenty-first century Reading has become a renowned centre for information technology businesses.

Its highly regarded University means it also attracts a large student population.

All of these advantages make Reading a flourishing place for employment, business and leisure. Shopping is a pleasure and it is easy to see why Reading has been voted one of the top ten retail destinations in the UK. The Oracle centre offers over ninety shops, twenty-five restaurants, cafés and bars and a multi-screen cinema.

It has major department stores such as House of Fraser and Debenhams and many of the high street brands besides.

There are further shopping options in

Broad Street, where you’ll find Marks & Spencer and John Lewis, as well as Friar Street and The Walk, all of which have a tempting array of high street and independent shops, boutiques and restaurants.

As an urban, youthful town, Reading has a buzzing nightlife. Going out after dark, you can choose from a range of restaurants offering cuisine from across the globe, as well as a host of lively pubs, bars and clubs, cinemas, arts venues and theatres. The most stylish nightspots can be found along the river in the town centre. Reading is also well known for the annual festival which takes place on Richfield Avenue every August Bank Holiday, with big names in the music industry headlining every night.

Sports fans and participants have plenty of options in Reading.

The town has several leisure centres, one of which, Medway Sports Centre, is close to Priory Point and has a swimming pool, squash and badminton courts and a gym.

Calcot Park Golf Club is just along Bath Road and tests its players on a classic 1930s parkland course. Probably the best known sports venue in Reading is Madejski Stadium, a 24,200 seater bowl which is home to Reading FC and rugby union’s London Irish, so also hosts many rugby internationals.

Outside town there are many enjoyable places to visit. Bath Road, as the name suggests, leads to the famous spa

town, but much closer at hand are the Thames-side towns of Maidenhead and Henley. Both have an excellent choice of exclusive boutiques, restaurants and bars, with many of the best attractions located on the riverside. Henley of course takes its place in the spotlight every summer for the Regatta.

The picturesque town of Newbury is just along from Reading on the M4, situated on the Kennet and Avon Canal and famed for its racecourse. Also, nearby Wokingham, a small market town full of quaint medieval and elegant Georgian buildings, is another good choice for a day of relaxed shopping or just soaking up the historic atmosphere.

Travel and connections

The finer detail

Reading is perfectly situated along the ‘M4 corridor’, meaning there is easy access to Slough and Windsor, the M25, and London to the east, as well as Swindon, Bristol and Wales to the west. Heathrow Airport is also just over 40 miles from Reading, making international travel a breeze. The nearest station to Priory Point is Reading West with routes to Newbury and Basingstoke. However there is a greater choice of direct services from Reading station. From here, journey times to London Paddington can be as little as 26 minutes.

Reading station is undergoing a massive redevelopment programme, making improvements including building additional platforms and a better railway. This will reduce delays and provide capacity for more trains.

The redevelopment will improve local investment and provide more employment opportunities. In addition, general improvements will be made to Reading’s surrounding roads and public spaces, making access easier and creating a more appealing living environment.
