ANNUAL REPORT 2020

Our mission is to educate and empower promising innercity youth to be leaders, champions and student-athletes by developing the skills necessary for success in high school, college and life.

2020

Moving Forward. Together. Since 2005, New Heights has created meaningful opportunities and an extended community for New York City student-athletes and their families to come together and rise to excellence. Through education, mentoring and the development of athletic and life skills, we help underserved young people discover and nurture their talents to become lifetime leaders on the basketball court, in the classroom and beyond. In 2020, our mission was put to the test, and New Heights did what we do best. We took action. We continued every aspect of our programming that could be delivered remotely, including Zoom-based basketball workouts, individual and small group tutoring, summer day camp and workshops that addressed social justice, college prep, social-emotional learning and nutrition. We maintained regular contact with our student-athletes and their families, providing support, guidance and optimism. New Heights programming has always emphasized a range of life skills that help young people understand and successfully navigate the world around them. Never has that emphasis been more important. As a tough year now comes to a close, our team continues to persevere. Basketball is still the unifying force that keeps the New Heights family connected and moving forward, and we’re not slowing down. As we write this letter, construction on our new Brooklyn home facility nears completion, our Sports-Based Youth Development Playbook will soon be published, and we are implementing our hybrid program of virtual and safe in-person activities. We’re especially proud to report that 100% of our high school seniors in the Class of 2020 graduated on time and have matriculated to higher education at schools such as Hofstra, Ohio State, Wesleyan and Williams. These are the wins that are most meaningful, and that are made possible through your continued support. We thank everyone for your ongoing commitment to our student-athletes and their dreams. The next year will be game changing for the New Heights family, as we move into our new home and expand our impact. We look forward to continuing the journey with you in 2021. In appreciation,

Mark Patricof Board Chairman

Ted Smith Executive Director

COLLEGE BOUND College Bound combines basketball coaching with intensive academic support in one program to create pathways to high school, college and careers. Our approach to youth development is holistic, and our program model is based on long-term, intensive mentorship.

Each of the initiatives under the College Bound umbrella has been designed to target the specific needs of our elementary, middle and high school student-athletes. HIGH SCHOOL ASSIST helps our fourth through eighth graders succeed in elementary/middle school and leverage that success to gain admission to college preparatory high schools. Services include team sessions focused on social and emotional development, tutoring, test prep, high school visits, financial aid advisement, and individualized counseling. COLLEGE ASSIST provides our high school student-athletes with the individual support necessary to gain admission to competitive colleges and universities. Services include SAT/ACT prep, tutoring, college visits, financial aid and college application support, life skills development and NCAA recruiting and eligibility guidance. CAREER ASSIST is our college completion initiative for New Heights alumni, designed to provide student-athletes with support and guidance to navigate and graduate college. Services include mentorship, course/ major advisement, resume building, financial literacy, interview skills, internship assistance and career exposure. SUMMER ACADEMY develops our student-athletes’ academic, athletic and leadership skills through a full-day, five-week program for rising fifth-ninth graders. Academic programming is focused on improving SEL, ELA and STEM skills, while promoting the New Heights values of Teamwork, Respect, Effort and Excellence (TREE). 2020 ANNUAL REPORT

Coping with COVID-19

With our mission unchanged, the way that we deliver services during the COVID-19 crisis has shifted. In March 2020, we created an Adaptive Program Model to deliver services remotely, including Zoombased fitness workouts, individual and small group tutoring, and workshops on nutrition, college prep and social justice and equality. Our team of coaches and program staff ramped up engagement with studentathletes and their families to ensure that we were providing support during very challenging times. New Heights made every effort to assess needs, identify those most at-risk and ensure out-of-school time was spent safely and productively. • • • •

Over 25 Zoom athletic workouts per week Over 115 hours of tutoring per month 75% Zoom attendance rate for all participants 100% weekly outreach to all participants

This past summer, we hosted a virtual Summer Academy. Our online curriculum incorporated physical fitness, academic skill building and social emotional learning through individual and group projects. We also held a virtual high school transition program for rising 9th graders. Throughout the pandemic, New Heights has remained a source of stability, optimism and quality information for the hundreds of youth and their families who trust and depend on us for guidance. We are committed to keeping our student-athletes connected to one another and on track toward their goals.

BROOKLYN

BOUND In 2021, New Heights will transition our offices and program sites to a new state-of-the-art athletic facility in the historic Bedford Union Armory in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood.

Featuring 3 full-sized basketball courts, administrative offices, classrooms and a computer lab, our new home will bring together all coaches, tutors, staff and volunteers to streamline the student-athlete experience and elevate the way we deliver services. We will increase our efficiency and efficacy by consolidating of our programming into one location, broadening our reach and deepening our community roots. New Heights will expand our overall reach by over 10 times, impacting over 3,000 youth annually – 500 through direct engagement in our College Bound program and over 2,500 through new community-based programming in Brooklyn, including clinics, leagues, workshops, school-based partnerships and events. With good access to public transportation, our new home will enable us to create a home and hub for the community and even greater outcomes for youth and families in Brooklyn. VIRTUAL REALITY New Heights is a family, and during tough times, family sticks together. While COVID-19 prevented us from gathering together in person for special events, we joined together nonetheless in spirit and online to support our student-athletes. 7TH ANNUAL TEAM CHALLENGE Each spring, the entire New Heights family rallies as one, from staff to parents, coaches to players, for the annual basketball Shoot-a-thon Team Challenge. This year the Team Challenge was a Zoom-based virtual “Push-up-athon on May 30th. With social distancing in place, the New Heights family of coaches, players, general managers, staff, leadership and supporters came together in spirit to push up and push forward -- and to raise money for the College Bound program. The event exceeded our wildest expectations and raised $250,000, proving that we can take push ups to new heights. THE GAMECHANGERS BALL On Tuesday night, October 20th, New Heights celebrated our 4th annual GameChangers Ball virtually, raising over $1 million. Hosted by Maurice DuBois and featuring special guests Jim Nantz, Rich Kleiman, Keia Clarke and others, the evening celebrated the strength that keeps New Heights and our student-athletes moving forward toward a bright future. The event also honored the New Heights Class of 2010 for their many achievements since graduating from our College Bound program 10 years ago, and included an exclusive tour of the game changing new facility in Brooklyn that New Heights will call home in 2021. SOCIAL

JUSTICE Sports can help build a better and more just future for all, and athletes play critical roles as symbols of and advocates for social change. New Heights is committed to making our world a place that truly respects the inherent dignity and equal rights of all people. We work with young people to develop skills and increase dialogue and understanding around these issues against the backdrop of basketball. Our goal is, and has always been, to provide youth with resources and education that increase awareness of the world around them, and empower them to become agents of positive change and advocate for themselves and others. We believe that the shared language of sports, and in our case basketball, brings us together to support one another on and off the court. In recent months, we have hosted discussions and town hall forums for student-athletes and alumni to share their experiences and concerns. Beginning with our 2020 Summer Academy initiative, our programming has integrated a formal curriculum that explores current and past social justice movements.

“Playing basketball, you aren’t thinking about what race you are or what socioeconomic background someone has. You are thinking of them as a teammate. It is not race driven in any way and it brings people together.”

FINANCIALS

During this challenging year, our New Heights family of supporters has truly stepped up. The efforts have been led by our Board of Directors who provided tremendous leadership and stability. Our Board “led from the front,” providing 100% Board Giving, and was a driving force behind our fundraising and fiscal management efforts. We also continued to be supported by a generous and diverse set of donors who enabled us to keep our programs and impact going during this pandemic to ensure New Heights was there for our youth and families. The New Heights team adapted to the challenging environment to operate efficiently and effectively ensuring immediate program impact and long term sustainability. Our fundraising events have shown the breadth of our family and a commitment to our work. Our 3rd annual GameChangers Ball in October 2019 raised over $1 million, and through our generous supporters, we again raised over $1 million in October 2020 to begin FY21 in a solid financial position. FY21 will be a transformational year for the organization with tremendous fundraising and financial work to be done, but thanks to everyone’s amazing support, we are poised to take the organization Brooklyn Bound in 2021.
