London The Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012 were transformative for London.

Following the sporting successes, the city is now delivering a legacy that has set the benchmark for future host cities to follow.

The regeneration of east London was at the heart of the bid to host the Games, and it is impressive to see what has already been delivered in Stratford.

Exciting developments have been taking place on the Queen Elizabeth

Olympic Park too. It has already hosted a number of fantastic events, from the 2013 Wireless festival to the Anniversary Games, one year on from London 2012.

Over the coming years the Park is set to welcome the European Swimming Championships in 2016 and the 2017 IAAF World Athletics Championships among others. I have no doubt that this will cement London and Stratford’s position as a world-leading events destination.

Feel the ground disappear as you make the short journey by lift, 80m to the top viewing platform of the ArcelorMittal Orbit where you will experience a show-stopping panorama.

Along with the landscape, and visionary design of the sculpture itself, visitors will be treated to interactives using gigapixel technology to interpret the views. Learn the story of the ArcelorMittal Orbit and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (available in multiple languages) and take a closer view of the panorama using this innovative technology. Visitors can also enjoy the distinctive Kapoor designed concave mirrors that will flip your perspective and turn the horizon on its head.

Take in a totally new perspective of London with views of up to 20 miles into the city and over the parklands, waterways and world-class sporting venues of London’s newest Park, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The wave-shaped roof of the Aquatics Centre can be seen in its full glory, take a hawk’s eye view over the magnificent Stadium, the future new home of West Ham United Football Club and look down on the unique and intimate gardens of the newly landscaped south of the Park.

Visitors to the ArcelorMittal Orbit will have the chance to see five football grounds, and many of London’s iconic buildings: The Shard, BT Tower, The Gherkin, Big Ben, Canary Wharf, the O2 Arena and Emirates Airline. Those with a keen eye will also spot new additions to the skyline, such as the Walkie Talkie and the Cheesegrater. With views of up to 20 miles, marvel at the sights on the horizon from Alexandra Palace in the north, Wembley Stadium to the west, Crystal Palace transmitter to the south and Epping Forest to the east.

Travel and Useful information Stratford is London’s best connected district. Whether you are visiting for leisure, business or both, a network of tube, rail and road connections offer swift and easy links to the rest of the capital, Britain and Europe. Three different airports can be reached in an hour or less, and the high speed Javelin trains from Stratford International whisk passengers to St Pancras International in six minutes, or to Ebbsfleet for connections to Europe.

London Overground rail services run from Stratford.

Rail

Main line trains to the East of England leave from Stratford. Liverpool Street station is six minutes from Stratford.

Crossrail services will be open in 2019, offering 24 fast trains an hour to Canary Wharf, Heathrow and further afield.

International Rail Services

From Stratford International, take the Southeastern High Speed train to St Pancras International in just six minutes, and to European destinations via Ebbsfleet.

Buses

Stratford is well served by bus routes.

Travel and Useful Information Air

London City Airport is just over three miles away, and can be reached in 14 minutes by tube and DLR. Direct coaches to Stansted Airport leave from Meridian Square, next to the taxi-rank. The new Southend Airport is accessible in 44 minutes from Stratford Station. Heathrow, Luton and Gatwick can all be reached via tube and/or national rail.

Stratford Multi-Storey Car Park has 588 parking spaces and is located off Great Eastern Road (postcode: E15 1BB).

London’s newest visitor destination, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is a place unlike any other. The beautifully landscaped south of the Park reopened on 5 April 2014 – and with over 400,000 people taking the opportunity to visit the park in the first month alone, it is fast establishing itself as a great a day out for locals and tourists alike.

The Park is open 24 hours a day, and visitors can enjoy open parklands

and tranquil waterways, with imaginative children’s playgrounds and places to relax and eat. The north of the Park offers large green spaces, whilst the south has been designed by some of the world’s leading landscape architects and designers.

Look out for the fountains, with special light and sound effects.

The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park also offers fantastic facilities and attractions for the whole community. In 2012, the

breathtaking London Aquatics Centre (picture below) was the arena for countless world records. Now everyone can experience the thrill of swimming under the magnificent wave-like roof, for the same price as local leisure centre pools. It has already hosted its first major event – the FINA/NVC Diving World Series – and also offers swimming and diving lessons, Aqua Splash sessions, a 50-station gym and a café.

The Copper Box Arena has been open since July 2013, offering a state-ofthe-art sports hall, an 80 station gym, group exercise classes, and a café. With retractable seating for up to 7,500 spectators, the Copper Box Arena hosts a programme of sports and activities. It is also home to the London Lions, the newest professional basketball team in London, and a major new venue for high profile entertainment and sporting events.

Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre will open in June, for local players and beginners, as well as elite level competitions.

It includes two hockey pitches, four indoor tennis courts and six outdoor courts, available to the public throughout the day and evening, all year round. A state of the art clubhouse has changing rooms, bar and areas to relax and socialise. It will also host high profile competitions – including hockey at the Investec London Cup in July. Works on the Stadium continue, ready for it to host the Rugby World Cup in 2015.

ATTRACTIONS VIEW TUBE You can’t miss the View Tube on the southern fringe of the Park - it is bright green and made from recycled shipping containers. With a fantastic close-up of The Stadium, Aquatics Centre and ArcelorMittal Orbit, the View Tube has its own cottage garden, education and arts centre and Moka East Café serving fresh, local and homemade treats. From here you can hire bikes and explore the Greenway, a cycle way and footpath that connects Pudding Mill Lane to Hackney Wick, around the edge of the Park.

THREE MILLS GREEN and HOUSE MILL A short walk along the canal from Stratford High Street this tranquil riverside location brings together history, culture, conservation and entertainment.

The beautifully

restored 19th century House Mill is Britain’s oldest tidal mill. The Domesday Book of 1086 records eight mills on this stretch of the River Lee, grinding grain for local bakers and also for the London gin trade at various points in history.

The House Mill was built in 1776, burnt down and rebuilt shortly after. A coat of arms on the south façade of the Miller’s House bears the date and initials of one-time owner Daniel S. Bisson. The subsequent early 19th century House Mill has been lovingly restored, with much of the impressive internal machinery remaining.

Plans are underway to restore the machinery to full working order, for demonstrations and generation of hydro-electricity.

3 Mills Studios is central London’s largest film studio, where independent film maker Danny Boyle worked on the awe-inspiring opening ceremony of the London 2012 Games.

Set the children free in Wild Kingdom, a natural and unique play space with fallen trees and giant stumps, rope swings, boulders, hammocks and a trampoline. For budding actors there is a stage set in a natural amphitheatre.

THEATRE ROYAL STRATFORD EAST This multi awardwinning theatrical gem first opened in 1884 and is today renowned for its bold original productions.

Recent productions include a return to the Stratford stage for Joan Littlewood’s pioneering production about the First World War, ‘Oh What a Lovely War.’ The musical, first staged here in 1963, had a huge impact on attitudes towards the conflict and British theatre. Here East HereEast is London’s home for making. It is a dedicated place where small, entrepreneurial businesses looking to scale, co-exist with established companies seeking to become more entrepreneurial.

HereEast is located at the heart of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in the former Press and Broadcast Centres.

It provides over one million square feet of dedicated and versatile spaces for creative and digital companies.

It combines unparalleled infrastructure with a unique environment to facilitate collaboration and the exchange of ideas, including shared workspaces, public areas, a landscaped canal side and artisanal cafes, shops and restaurants.

Here East will create over 7,500 jobs, including 5,300 directly on-site and a further 2,200 in the local community. It is over 40% pre-let, including key tenants BT Sport, who already broadcast live from Here East; Loughborough University, who will create a multi-disciplinary postgraduate teaching, research and enterprise facility; Hackney Community College, who will deliver the UK’s first digital apprenticeship; and Infinity SDC, who will deliver one of the largest and most efficient data centres in Europe.

HereEast is being developed by iCITY, a joint venture between Delancey, a specialist real estate investment and advisory company, and Infinity SDC, the UK’s leading data centre operator.

Strand East Forming a triangle south of High Street, Stratford, with the River Lea Navigation to the west and the Three Mills Wall River to the east, Strand East will be a landmark development built in an area steeped in industrial heritage.

This 26 acre development will feature 1,200 new homes, 58,000 square metres of workspaces, and a 350 room designer hotel. Designed sensitively against the backdrop of 17th century Three Mills Island, it will combine high quality apartments and family-friendly

mews-style townhouses with office spaces built for a range of businesses, including digital and creatives.

The developer Landprop Holding, also plans to create a riverside park with access to the water, urban spaces for cafes and outdoor entertainment, a network of cycle paths, and offer a range of retail and community uses.

Strand East Tower – a 40m timber lattice sculpture on the High Street, has been a welcome addition to the Stratford skyline since 2012.

A ramble along the Greenway is a great way to experience the energy and creative scene that is blossoming in east London, not to mention all the cafes, bars and restaurants where you can stop to relax and refuel. Begin at the View Tube near Pudding Mill Lane; if you prefer two wheels, you can hire bikes, and follow the Greenway round the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to Fish Island and Hackney Wick.

This canal side community of artists and studio spaces is a hive of creativity and innovation. Though many Londoners are only just starting to discover the area, Hackney Wick and Fish Island has been quietly innovating for centuries. Once a thriving Victorian industrial suburb, many of the original factories are now used by creatives, designers and digital specialists.

Co-operative workspaces, quirky bars and cafes, public artworks and a vibrant nightlife make this one of the capital’s funkiest communities.

The Wick’s major draw is its canals and towpaths, with a backdrop of monumental industrial buildings, waterside nature, urban street art and a houseboat community.

Forman’s Fish Island, designed in the shape of a cut of salmon, has evolved from a family-owned salmon smoking business, established in 1905.

It houses a modern British Restaurant, smokehouse, art gallery, and an event and party venue with views of the Olympic Stadium.

The White Building is London’s centre for art, technology and sustainability.

An incubator for innovation, it serves as a creative lab for artists whose work engages with technology, as well as a resource and venue for residential and educational communities. A unique residency programme offers opportunities for artists to produce new work on an international platform, with studios, and event and exhibitions spaces.

The CRATE Brewery and Pizzeria, situated canal-side in The White Building, has received national and international acclaim, with ZAGAT rating it as one of London’s Hottest New Bars.
