Issue 5 | Autumn 2024

Why attendance matters Our attendance at Rokeby School continues to be above national average and we are extremely proud of this. We need to keep working together to ensure that this continues to be a focus area for all students to ensure the best outcomes for all. Being in school is important to your son’s achievement, wellbeing and wider development. Evidence shows that the students with the highest attendance throughout their time in school gain the best GCSE and A Level results. Further research found that students who performed better both at the end of primary and secondary school missed fewer days than those who didn’t perform as well. In 2019, secondary school students who didn’t achieve grade 9 to 4 in English and maths missed 10 more days on average over the key stage than those who achieved grade 9 to 5 in both English and maths. Every moment in school counts and days missed add up quickly. For example, a child in Y10 who is absent for three days over a half term could miss 15 lessons in total. The higher a student’s attendance, the more they are likely to learn, and the better they are likely to perform in exams and formal assessments. If you are experiencing difficulties in ensuring the regular school attendance of your son, we are here for you! Whatever the reasons are for your son not attending school, please let us know - we care and we are here to support you and him. Our team will work with you to develop strategies and targets to support your son.
