Year 10 Visit to NewVic and Cambridge University

More than 42 Year 10 students visited Newvic, Newham Sixth Form College, this week and 30 visited University of East London. We are proud to have these brilliant links to support our student aspirations of further and higher education. The visit to Newvic was the 3rd outreach programme in collaboration with LoudSpeaker. We are looking forward to their next steps and thank all of our external partnersinvolved. Ms Anderson, Assistant Headteacher

Some of our Year 10 students also visited Cambridge University last week. The rain didn't deter them, they had a great time imaging their future incarnation as university students

Introducing The Eastlea Environment Project Group

The Eastlea Environmental Project Group is a place where students from Year 10 gather to work towards environmental issues around the school and in the local community. We run various projects led by different members of the club, to provide an equal opportunity to all, and to developsubstantialskillssuchas: Leadership;Teamwork;Independence;

Presentation and Communication; Delegation and to get an opportunity to work professionally. We decided to initiate this club, because we wanted a wider selection of super-curricular activities to display when ,applying tothebestsixthformsattheendofYear11.

Not only are we boosting our CVs but also learning life long skills that will help us in the outside world.This club is mainly initiated to allow high-achieving students to demonstrate extra capabilities along withtheiracademicsuccess.

Through this club, we are getting various opportunities, which will significantly help ustoreachthebestschoolspostGCSEs. So far, we've started 7 projects and successfully completed the first one: "CoolingDowntheNorthBlock".

Our aim for this project was to reduce the internal temperatures on the south-facing buildings (Math and English block). We have worked thoroughly on this project for around 4 months and attended many meetings and presented to Governors, Headteacher and members of SLT, in order to propose and discuss ideas regarding the project. This project was fully funded in January of this year.

Safety information for Parents and Carers

There are concerns about the safety of cannabis vapes and edibles, especially when used by young people. Some people mistakenly believe that cannabis is harmless, but this is not true, especiallywhentheproductsareverypotent.

Young people in Newham have reported meeting other young people in the park or on their way to and from school and being given small bottles of THC for free. The young people have then been encouraged to try these by friends and other young people they are with and this has quicklyhasledtoaddictionandowingmoneytodealers.

What's even more alarming is that some edibles and vape pens labeled as containing THC actually contain even stronger chemicals, such as Spice. Spice is not made from cannabis, but it affects the brain in a similar way. It is even more dangerous and can cause breathing problems, seizures,andevendeathiftakeninhighamounts.

In Newham, a student collapsed at school after using someone else's vape pen. Similar incidents have occurred at other schools in Newham, as well as in places like Essex, Yorkshire, Humberside, and Manchester. It is crucial for parents and caregivers to be aware of these dangerous products andknowwhatsignstolookoutfor.

If young people are using or selling these drugs, they may experience sudden mood changes, increased fatigue or lack of focus, vomiting or loss of consciousness, unusual speech patterns or difficultyexplainingthemselves,orunexplainedanger,fear,ordistress.

It is important for everyone to understand the risks associated with cannabis vapes and edibles, particularly when used by young people. These products can have serious consequences, includingaddictionandhealthcomplications.

Parents and carers should educate themselves and their children about the dangers of these substances. It is also essential to be vigilant and watch for any signs of drug use or involvement in selling these drugs as this could be a sign a young person is being exploited by older people. By staying informed and proactive, we can work together to keep our communities safe and protect ouryoungpeoplefromtheharmfuleffectsofthesedangerousproducts.
