World Book Day
Students enjoyed seeing staff dressed as their favourite characters from books. below are photographs of the staff including Ms Carter dress as Mark Watney from The Martian, a sci-fi book by Andy Weir.
Mad-hats off to the admin team who embraced and celebrated Alice In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll by dressing up and hosting an Alice-themed Tea party.
World Book Day Celebrations in the School Library
This year, the library had a magical Harry Potter theme, transforming the space into a scene from Hogwarts. The library was decorated with house banners, lights, book displays and with the door resembling Platform 9¾. The library staff fully embraced the spirit, dressingas the beloved characters. Our library was buzzing with excitement as we celebrated World Book Day with a range of fun and engaging activities! From scavenger hunt to designing bookmarks and book-themed quizzes, students came together to take part. Students from Inclusion came in to enjoy a special storytelling session of the Gingerbread Man.
One of the highlights was our two author events. Author Bali Rai visited Eastlea on Monday 3rd March as part of our World Book day events. He delved into his life & experiences to share his motivations & inspirations for writing an array of books, including The harder They Fall and Soccer Sqad series. Bali is a well recognised author, writing over 40 books and also worked with the BBC. Students gave positive feedback & enthusiastically engaged in the creative writing workshops where they were asked to use their imagination to create ashort story using a specific scenario.
World Book Day continued
We also had a livestream, with international bestselling author of young adult thrillers, Karen McManus. Her work includes the One of Us Is Lying series, which was turned into a television show. Selected students had a chance to find out about her passion for books and how she started writing from a young age. Our students had a chance to pose a lot of interesting questions to Karen.
Some students (pictured below) also visited the library to collect their prizes for the New Year book reading competition. Well done to them for their reading! Albert 8M, Amy 7M, Tanisha 8E and Jannath 7S, Elisha 8E A big thank you to all the students and staff who participated and made the day special! Let’s continue to celebrate the magic of books every day.

Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge
On the 14th and 27th of February, a selection of our Year 10 students participated in the first round of the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge. The day was spent learning, designing, and practicing a speech. Many inspiring and thoughtful speeches were delivered, but only four have been selected to move on to the next stage: Nahia Chowdhury, Anjum Ferdus, Ikhlas Mohamed, and Khadija Yusuf.
These four will now compete with each other in an assembly speech in order to select the best candidate for the next stage of the competition, the Newham Regional Final, to be held at Sarah Bonnell School on Wednesday, 30th April, 2025. Congratulations to our four candidates and to all those who participated!
Mr Hibbs, English Teacher
Part of the day was spent practising and rehearsing proper poise and stage presence when delivering a speech.
Many students spoke eloquently, and delivered very thoughtful speeches.
The remainder of the session allowed each student to deliver their speech to their group.
