Ceremony of Remembrance at East Ham Cenotaph

15th November 2024 NCL Learning Day School Closed to Students

18th November Year 10 & 11 Coffee Morning, 9.30 - 10.30 am

Year 8 History and Inclusion students attended a special ceremony of Remembrance on 11th November (Armistice Day) 2024 to commemorate those who lost their lives during the two World Wars as well as in more recent conflicts.

21st and 22nd November Flu Vaccinations 19th December 2024 Last Day of Autumn Term

Extra curricular activities at Eastlea

This was a special service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in Central Park which was aimed at young people, with children from several Newham schools taking part. At the end of the service, local historian Lee J Skeggs gave a talk to school children and young people about members of his own family who died in both conflicts and about some notable Newham victims of both World Wars.

Our sensory class students made a wreath and some miniature poppies in class which they placed on the memorial as part of the commemoration.

NCL Learning Day School will be closed to students next Friday (15th November) as we have a staff training day.

Celebrating Success Well done to Dovydas Druteika in Year 9 who competed last Saturday at the London Regional Schools’ Judo Championships and won the gold medal representing Eastlea.

Library Notices Islamophobia Month November is also the month to raise awareness about Islamophobia and to combat discrimination amongst Muslims.

At Eastlea, we want to break down misconceptions and build a community where everyone can feel respected and safe, regardless of their faith. The library has a display of books about Islam and Islamophobia for students to borrow and learn more about this important topic. Here is more information.

Late Books We currently have over 200 late books so I encourage all parents to check if your son/daughter has an outstanding book that needs to be returned or renewed. We want our library to be fully stocked and for students to enjoy taking books out and reading them at home so your support in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Dyslexia Corner - Can you help?

University College London (UCL) has launched a study to explore the link between dyslexia and sleep issues, following research showing that 66% of children with dyslexia have clinical sleep problems. Given sleep’s critical role in brain development, cognitive function, and overall well-being, UCL aims to examine how dyslexia may impact sleep across all ages.

This research is essential, as sleep issues may add to the cognitive and learning challenges faced by individuals with dyslexia, potentially affecting mental health, daily life, and academic growth. Understanding and addressing these sleep disruptions could benefit individuals with dyslexia throughout their lives.

How Can You Help? UCL is now seeking participants both with and without dyslexia to take part in a short online questionnaire about their sleep behaviours. The input from a wide range of participants will help researchers pinpoint patterns, enabling them to take a closer look at how dyslexia and sleep intersect. By participating, you’ll be contributing to a vital research project that could lead to better support, improved sleep interventions, and a deeper understanding of dyslexia’s impact on mental and physical health.
