Black History Month

Last week we kicked off our celebrations of Black History Month with a fantastic assembly for each year group. Ms Stapleton shared with students the importance of BHM, what this year's themes were and how we can make an impact no matter who we are. It was brilliant to see so many students engaged in this assembly, and just goes to show how much we as a school believe in community as our strength. The Library also has a range of books on display to celebrate BHM and it is running a quiz which students can take away and do over the half-term holiday. The deadline for the quiz is Monday 4th November. All entries will be entered into a prize draw and the first 5 students will win prizes, so we encourage all students to take part. Let's learn, reflect and celebrate together!

Jack Petchey Awards Ceremony
On 10th October, some of our students attended the prestigious Jack Petchey Award Ceremony at the Cineworld O2, where they were recognised for their hard work and dedication. MP Stephen Timms was present and delivered an inspiring speech, expressing his pride in the students’ achievements. Councillor Rohima Rahman also joined the celebration, sharing how thrilled she is for their success. Well done to everyone who was presented with an award. Here's a picture of our wonderful students with Councillor Rohima.

Global Girls Leading Summit 2024
On Friday, 11th October twelve Year 9 girls went to the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in Westminster to attend the Global Girls Leading Summit 2024. They listened to inspiring speeches from Tina Tchen, the Executive Vice President of the Obama Foundation and H.E. Josefa Gonzalez-Blanco Ortiz-Mena, the Mexican Ambassador to the UK. The day was packed with discussion activities about the role of women and the challenges women face in today’s world. There were many opportunities to ask questions to the speakers or to panels, made up of leading women on the International and National Level. The students were most impressed by the speeches given during the Student Performance Poetry ‘Letters to our Daughters’. The day ended with a performance by Impact Dance who showcased a mix of Hip-Hop and Street Dance. Despite it being a long day, all Year 9 students were truly grateful for having been given the opportunity to attend this event and left feeling empowered and inspired.

Dyslexia Corner

Did you know that somewhere between 5% to 10% of the population have some form of dyslexia? Did you also know that Richard Branson, Robin Williams, Idris Elba, Kyra Knightley and Albert Einstein are all known to have or have had dyslexia? Those with dyslexia may struggle writing notes, spelling and and getting their ideas down in writing. Dyslexics may find it difficult to organise their thoughts and get these in the right order as well. There are also many misconceptions about dyslexia and In a recent podcast there are some important points that highlight this. Please listen to an interview with Louise Selby who is a very well-known lead and authority on dyslexia in this country and has written many books and programs to support interventions for dyslexia particularly around spelling. https://thesendcast.com/dyslexia-myth-busting/ Ms Hayibor, Inclusion Teacher
