Year 7 Meet the Tutors

On Wednesday 11th September we welcomed in our new Year 7 families to the school for our Meet the Tutor evening. Year 7 Tutors were sharing how our brilliant students had settled in and curriculum teams shared information on what to expect in lessons throughout the academic year.

If you were unable to attend this event and would like an update on your child in Year 7, please get in touch with your child’s Tutor.

Here is the link to this half term’s PSHE newsletter covering the topics to be taught this half term in tutor time.

Here at Eastlea we use a system called Go4Schools which records attendance, academic progress and behaviour. We use this system to communicate reports, assessment grades and communicate if your child has a detention. It’s really important that parents sign up to this system. Here is a letter explaining how to do this.

Dyslexia, a learning difference that affects reading and language skills, has long been a subject of research and discovery. While there are many reasons why dyslexia occurs, one of the most significant factors is its inheritability. Scientific evidence shows that dyslexia tends to run in families, and recent studies have revealed fascinating insights into its genetic roots.

Contrary to earlier beliefs that only a few genes were responsible, researchers have now discovered that over a hundred genes are involved in dyslexia. This complexity explains why dyslexia can manifest in various ways, with individuals experiencing different challenges and strengths.

Understanding the genetic basis of dyslexia highlights the importance of providing the right support and resources to those affected. This is why the work of charities like Jeans for Genes is so crucial. They provide support to children and families living with inherited conditions, helping them navigate the challenges of disorders like dyslexia.

In recognition of this, the staff in the Inclusion Department will be joining the celebration of Jeans for Genes Day on Friday, 20th September. This event will raise funds to help children and families living with genetic disorders, including dyslexia. By coming together, we can support the ongoing research and resources that make a difference in the lives of those affected by inherited conditions.

Mental Health Support for Students at Eastlea

All of us can experience mental health issues in our lives. At Eastlea we work in partnership with two specialist providers to deliver mental health support to our students.

Place2Be, which is a national charity, provides our school counselling service. This is available in school Monday-Wednesday. Students can request a drop in session which is called Place2Talk. More information about Place2Talk can be found here. Should students need longer term therapeutic support they can also be referred to Place2Be regular counselling sessions. Please read the letter (available in a range of community languages) regarding the service here

We also work with WINS (Wellbeing in Newham Schools) which is part of the NHS Newham Mental Health Support Team. Our experienced practitioner is Michelle Butcher. WINS can provide targeted support to young people who are experiencing low mood or anxiety. Michelle is in school every Monday and a letter explaining what WINS provides is here

Should students be experiencing more acute mental health difficulties, we can also refer to NHS community mental health services. Please contact your child's Pastoral Manager in the first instance, or our Safeguarding Officer, Helena Loizou, if you have concerns.
