GCSE RESULTS 2024

Year 11 students at New Hall School jumped for joy, with news of their record-breaking results in August. 76% of grades were at 6-9, and nearly a third were at the top grades 8/9.

New Hall operates the diamond model structure, with students educated in co-educational classes up to age 11 and again at Sixth Form. From 11 to 16 they are taught in single-sex lessons, enabling the School to tailor pastoral and academic provision during the GCSE courses.

“Each year, we are proud to see the success of the diamond model, as we challenge and overthrow the notions of gender stereotypes in school subjects and teaching. Evidenced by this year’s results and our students’ choices of A Level subjects, we see the positive effects of singlesex teaching on adolescents’ unconscious bias. The co-educational A Level lessons in the Sixth Form will help to prepare them for higher education and life beyond school.”

New Hall’s top performer, Ned, achieved a clean sweep of eleven grade 9s. Ned said: “I’m really happy with my results. I’ve decided on Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Further Mathematics for my A Levels. I’m really looking forward to starting boarding at New Hall with all my friends – Sixth Form will be great!”. In Year 10, Ned took two Level 3 qualifications (three years early), gaining a grade A* in his Level 3 EPQ and the highest grade, A, in the FSMQ in Additional Mathematics. In 2024, Ned also achieved a Distinction in the UKMT Maclaurin Maths Olympiad 2024, and 95%, the highest score in School, in his Grade 7 Communications Skills, as part of his co-curricular Trinity Drama examinations.

Aurora is a weekly boarder, diocesan scholar and this year’s recipient of the Principal’s Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. Following eight grade 9s and three grade 8s, Aurora is excited to be studying Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry at A Level, as well as a DELF Diploma in French. “I joined New Hall in Year 7 and have really appreciated the support system available in the boarding house. I’m looking forward to my A Level lessons at New Hall – my ambition is to be a psychiatrist, so I’m hoping to study Medicine at university,” Aurora shared.

“We are so proud of all our Year 11 students. In my 22 years as Principal, this day has never ceased to be one of the most joyful occasions of the academic year. Our students have worked incredibly hard and it is exciting to share this moment with them, as they receive this recognition for their achievements. ”

“We are delighted with this news of the students’ academic successes. They will be progressing to New Hall Sixth Form at an exciting time, with our new Sixth Form International Business & Languages Centre providing university-style facilities alongside our Sixth Form Boarding Houses. This will also be the first cohort to have the option to study BTEC Sport at New Hall, after this vocational course, equivalent to two A Levels, was added to the Sixth Form academic provision.”

Students have also secured places at other leading universities across the country and beyond, including Durham, Exeter, Loughborough, University College London, Warwick, University of Hong Kong and Stanford University.

Deputy Head Boy Archie was one of the School’s highest achievers, gaining three A* grades and securing his place to read History at Durham University. Joining him at Durham are fellow top achievers Alastair, Emily, Leila, Madeleine, and Zoe, studying a range of subjects from Theology & Philosophy to Archeology. Archie shared, “Sixth Form was busy but amazing, and I’m very grateful to the School and my History teachers especially. My message to all students is to work hard and remember to enjoy yourselves.”

“I am incredibly proud of our students and all they have accomplished. This group has excelled not only in their studies but also across a wide range of co-curricular activities, from sports to performing arts, and in their service to the community. Their New Hall journey has taken them around the world as part of their academic enrichment, with trips to France, Iceland, India, Spain, Switzerland, the United States of America and more. Complemented by their hard work, these diverse experiences have enhanced their education, contributing to their outstanding results and preparing them for the exciting next steps in their lives.”

Setting the scene for the opening of New Hall’s Sixth Form International Business & Languages Centre in September 2024, our Economics Department celebrated stellar results, with 39% of grades at A* and 75% at A*/A. The Modern Languages Department continues to go from strength to strength, with a third of grades at A* and 82% at A*/A. This follows the news that New Hall has won the Muddy Stilettos ‘Best Schools Award’ for our pioneering programme of ‘Modern Languages Cookery’, a unique, immersion-style of learning, which helps to build confidence when learning a language. Our second state-of-the-art cookery room opened earlier this year, and the School also offers the professional Leiths Academy qualifications.

MOST ABLE & TALENTED

New Hall School has high academic standards, regularly outperforming local grammar and independent schools in public examinations. New Hall achieved the highest A Level progress score in Essex in relation to the ‘value added’ by a school in 2019, the last year that the DfE published progress data.

Our thriving programme of activities stretches and challenges our most academically able. We believe that the learning habits required to achieve academic success can be nurtured in all our students, and that even the most able can develop to even higher levels when set intellectual challenges and opportunities to think creatively.

This programme is delivered alongside our excellent system of pastoral care to ensure that, as well as being academically stretched, students are supported and develop the skills to balance their studies alongside their equally important co-curricular contributions.

The success of this programme can be illustrated by the performance of our most academically able students (MAT). These students represent a third of each year group.

NB: From 2020, the DfE no longer publishes progress scores for schools.

WHAT DO MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY SAY ABOUT NEW HALL?

“It’s amazing - all the facilities, all the clubs you can attend, there are so many and you can try something you’ve never tried before. Don’t miss any of the opportunities that you have because I don’t think you’ll every get a chance to do them anywhere else. New Hall offers something you wouldn’t get anywhere else. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go to New Hall.”

Annie | Year 8 day student

“New Hall has been an amazing opportunity for all three of our children. As a parent, I’m so proud of the School and I feel very, very sad to leave.”

Parent of Year 13 Leaver

“Boarding has been an amazing experience for me. The staff are so welcoming, and they did a great job making Dennett House a second home for all of us. My favourite aspect about boarding will be the socials with other boarders. We’ve had quizzes, basketball matches, the ‘Pancake Race’, formals, etc.”

Chloe| 2024 leaver from Hong Kong

“As a new student at New Hall, I have felt very welcomed by both boarders and staff. Boarding provides me with an excellent balance between studying and a social life, with both academic support and social events taking place. The staff are open minded and caring. There is a real sense of belonging and community within the School, the importance of which cannot be overstated.”

Filip | Year 13 boarder from Macedonia

“The biggest thing I have noticed since joining is the sense of community. Students are polite and curious; staff have been warm and welcoming, and this has helped me so much to settle in.”

New teacher in the Senior Divisions

“A new school can be overwhelming, for me it was a culture shock coming from abroad and starting in Year 9, but I settled in quickly. The site is really big, but you get used to it within a week!”
