Dance

‘Everything in the universe has rhythm. Everything dances’ Maya Angelou

Our thriving Dance Department is based in the Walkfares Performing Arts Centre where pupils take up opportunities during the week and on Saturdays to learn a wide range of dance techniques ranging from Ballet, Tap, Jazz and Lyrical through to Modern and Musical Theatre.

Our pupils perform at shows and events throughout the year. The New Hall Dance Festival Team competes at festivals, and has performed at the Royal Albert Hall and Sadler Wells Theatre. Members of our Festival Team have performed in West End productions, and our classical dancers have trained with The Royal Ballet School, English Youth Ballet Company and the London Children’s Ballet Company.

Ballet: Short barre and centre work, age-appropriate stretches and basic positions, pupils learn fundamentals and terminology, developing strength, confidence, balance and flexibility.

Please note that Ballet and Tap are not graded lessons; examination work is taught on Saturdays.

Tap: Designed to develop rhythm, style and sound, students learn a variety of tap styles from Broadway to Rhythm tap. Exercises focus on building flexibility of the knee and ankles, coordination, and speed of movement.

Jazz: Focusing on dance technique such as isolations of the body, improving performance quality and developing complex rhythms and patterns, students experience various styles of jazz such as Broadway, Street and Contemporary. This is an excellent opportunity to develop as well-rounded dancers.

Lyrical Dance: Embodying aspects of Ballet, Jazz, Acrobatics, and Modern dance, Lyrical Dance is usually danced at a faster pace than Ballet, though not as fast as Jazz, and plays a major role in dance competitions.

Grade Dance Classes: Classes are taught the ISTD examination syllabus in Modern and Tap and Cecchetti examination syllabus work. Please note that pupils taking up Graded Classes are required have reached a specific minimum grade before joining these classes.

Music

Pre-Prep Division Choir – Years 1 & 2

A mixed ability group open to all Pre-Prep pupils exploring a range of traditional and contemporary music. The song choices are particularly suited to this age group, and the choir performs at a variety of events throughout the year.

Pre-Prep String Ensemble – Years 1 & 2 (Lent & Trinity Terms only) (invite only)

This is a new initiative for this academic year and is open to pupils in Year 1 or 2 who play an orchestral string instrument and have been learning for at least one term. The ensemble will perform a variety of beginner ensemble pieces and is an excellent way to develop their performance skills and accelerate their learning. This ensemble is invite only, but please contact a member of the Music Department or your visiting music teacher if you are unsure whether this ensemble is suitable for your child.

Pre-Prep Division Recorder Group – Year 2

This initiative is open to pupils in Year 2 who would like to begin learning Recorder in a group setting.

Preparatory Division Orchestra – Years 3 – 6

Open to pupils in these Year Groups who have been learning for at least two terms and are approaching Grade 1 standard or have completed an Initial Examination or Prep Test. Please contact a member of the Music Department or your visiting music teacher if you are unsure whether this ensemble is suitable for your child.

Preparatory Division Choir

A mixed ability group open to all pupils exploring a range of traditional and contemporary music. This group prepares for a variety of performance throughout the year.

Junior Orchestra – Years 3 – 9

Open to pupils in these year groups who have achieved Grade 1 or above. Please contact a member of the Music Department or your visiting music teacher if you are unsure whether this ensemble is suitable for your child.

Chorister Training – Years 4 – 6 (invitation only)

This initiative continues to provide training for young singers in choral and liturgical music to enhance our Masses and liturgies throughout the academic year. Although this activity is by invitation, please contact Mr Turner if you would like to arrange a vocal assessment.

Preparatory Division Music Theory – Years 3 – 6

This activity enables pupils to develop their knowledge of music theory by completing exercises and workbooks in preparation for taking ABRSM Music Theory examinations. Most pupils focus on the theoretical content for Grades 1 and 2, but higher grades can also be accommodated.

Hymn Practice – Preparatory Division

This is a compulsory activity for all Preparatory Division pupils to learn hymns and songs for assemblies, Masses and other liturgical events throughout the academic year.

Sport

“The five S’s of sports training are: stamina, speed, strength, skill and spirit; but the greatest of these is spirit.”

Pupils develop their technical, tactical and physical skills in preparation for the season ahead.

Outdoor Learning

Pupils attending these sessions have the opportunity to learn new skills and work as part of a team. A change of clothes, waterproof and wellies will be required on the days they go outdoors.

Co-curricular

Year 1 Super Skills (invite only)

This activity focusses on games and activities to promote fine motor skills and develop handwriting.

Pre-Prep Division Pray and Play

The sessions will be run by various members of the Chaplaincy Team and guest visitors. The pupils will explore faith in an age appropriate manner and through play.

Year 2 Read, Share and Care

A chance for the pupils to read books, including those that will challenge them, with one another and with people from the wider school community. As a club, each week, we will also read and discuss a book all together.

Bible Stories and Biscuits

In this activity, we will be revisiting the classic Bible Stories and seeing how they relate to our lives today. We will also use this opportunity to chat about life, faith, friendships, and families. It is our hope that the children will be able to learn about the Bible in a fun, relaxed and engaging environment, whilst enjoying fellowship and whilst enjoying some delicious biscuits! The sessions will be run by various members of the Chaplaincy Team and guest visitors.

Years 5 & 6 Silver Stories

Silver Stories is a profoundly positive experience for both young and old. Each pupil (Silver Reader) is paired with a Silver Listener, an elderly member of the community, whom they call once a week to read to over the phone. Each pupil will read for 10 minutes and will join the Library, Reading & Study Club when not attending their Silver Stories session.

Years 5 & 6 Basketball

Year 5 will be able to attend Basketball Club for the Michaelmas Term

Year 6 will be able to attend Basketball Club for the Lent Term

Year 3 will be able to attend Basketball Club for the first half of the Trinity Term.

Year 4 will be able to attend Basketball Club for the second half of the Trinity Term

Year 6 CREST Award

Superstar Awards are a great introduction to problem-solving in STEM. They offer children the opportunity to learn through hands-on challenges by exploring the world around them.

Year 6 Foundation Project Qualification

Year 6 pupils will complete an academic project, in which they will choose a topic of personal interest, research it and present their findings in an essay. They will then reflect on the skills and ideas learnt. They will be taught key research skills and management skills, such as structuring an argument, finding sources of information and managing their time, which are readily transferable to other subjects and tasks. There is the potential to enter their project for the Level 1 Foundation Project Qualification (FPQ), a nationally recognised qualification.

Years 3-6 Culture Club

Culture Club is all about making real-life, real-time links with children in other cultures. Learning about cultural differences, first hand, helps you understand different perspectives and be more aware of the privileges we experience. This can transform you into an empathetic, open-minded, grateful, and happier person. This club will involve writing letters to children, sometimes in a different language.
