Tom Cycles for Farleigh Hospice Thomas Mills (5M) has taken part in a cycle ride to raise money for Farleigh Hospice, who are working with Thomas’ family as his father is seriously ill. Farleigh Hospice provide care for children who have sick parents through the Yo-Yo project and school visits. 60% of the work Farleigh do is funded by charitable donations. Tom has written the following account of his cycle ride. “We started training, going out on our bikes almost every night for three weeks before the ride. We measured our practice track at about 11km, but we had to cycle 20km on the day. At the same time we started fundraising, sending out our ‘just giving’ link on Facebook and LinkedIn and telling everyone we knew, as well as a few special people. We also made a little note to hand out at school so school friends could sponsor me too. On the day, we had a fan club supporting us. My Nannie and Grandpa travelled all the way from South Shields (near Newcastle), and my Mum and Dad’s friends came from Oxford with their Dalmatian puppy, Daisy. We lined up on the starting line and I shouted to my Mum, ‘Ready, set, go!’, and we were off. We had a map but it was easy to find our way, with lots of signs and marshalls along the route.
There were a few hills, but they weren’t too steep. When we got to the beginning of a hill we reminded ourselves that on the other side there would be a great downhill! When we were just over the half way point, there was a refreshment stop where we got a drink and some snacks; it’s the first time we’ve ever had a waitress service on a bike ride! When we were almost finished, we saw the people who registered before us just ahead and it spurred us on to get going. We arrived back about an hour and a half from when we set off. With the help of our generous 85 friends, we raised £3,436.08 to support the great work Farleigh do.”
