World Book Day A passer by might not have recognised the pupils and staff of the Preparatory School on Thursday, as they arrived for morning registration, and to celebrate World Book Day, in a wonderful array of colourful costumes, representing their favourite book characters. There was certainly no shortage of drama, as Shrek greeted The Queen of Hearts, several James Bonds leapt into action, whilst a Very Hungry Caterpillar chatted to The Mad Hatter! Pirates, fairies, bears, mice, cats and the Artful Dodger, could all be found amongst the everpopular, bespectacled characters from Hogwarts School, wielding wands, as Dumbledore presided over them and a covern of glamorous staff witches, possibly on their way to Miss Cackle’s Academy? The whole school assembly enjoyed each year group, from Pre-Reception to Year 6, and the staff, as they stood to do a twirl and show off their costumes. The School Librarians outlined the day’s activities, reminding pupils of the annual ‘Design a Bookmark’ Competition, and their own special World Book Day token, to be exchanged, by March 24, for one of the six titles, available at just £1.00, or to redeem against the cost of more books at local bookshops.

A new venture this year was to tune into the Biggest Book Show on Earth, a fantastic on-line festival which was streamed live into our classrooms. Year 5 pupils particularly enjoyed this opportunity to be inspired in their reading and writing by nine bestselling authors and illustrators, which included Shirley Hughes, Cathy Cassidy, Lauren Child, Anthony Horowitz, and Liz Pichon, all introduced by Tony Robinson. Throughout the day, classes visited the School Library to browse through, and purchase, books of their own choice from a wide selection of titles, hand-picked by Mrs Harris from Waterstones bookshop. Parents have also donated books to add to our Library resources, and further donations, for wearing costume instead of school uniform, were made towards a charity collection for BCCS. Special thanks to Mrs Harris for all her hard work in organising this special event; to the mums who came to help with book browsing and purchases; to parents and families for their generosity and organising such fantastic costumes; and to all pupils and teachers in disguise, who joined in the fun to make World Book Day such a memorable occasion.
