Welcome Back! WELCOME A warm welcome back to all returning pupils and staff. We hope you have had a wonderful summer holiday and are feeling refreshed. To all new pupils and staff, we would like to welcome you into our school family; we look forward to getting to know you and we hope you will be very happy here. THANK YOU Headteacher, Sarah Conrad, would like to thank all parents for their very generous gifts to both herself and staff at the end of the last academic year. It was very much appreciated. ESSEX BUSINESS EXCELLENCE AWARDS Over the summer, we were delighted to hear the news that we have been shortlisted in three categories in the Essex Business Excellence Awards 2013. We are finalists in Best Growing Business, Community and the Excellence in Marketing categories. The award ceremony is to be held on Thursday 12 September and we will report on the outcome in due course. TATLER SCHOOLS GUIDE 2014 We were also pleased to feature in the Tatler Schools Guide for the third year running. This prestigious guide of the top preparatory and private schools in the
country is available to buy now. You can read their review of New Hall on our website. GCSE AND A LEVEL SUCCESS GCSE and A Level students from the Senior School have been celebrating remarkable results this summer. There was a 50% increase in A* grades at GCSE since last year, with a record 52% of grades being A*/ A. In the A Level results, 76% achieved A*B grades, whilst 94% achieved A*-C. Many pupils subsequently have won places at Oxbridge to study subjects such as Classics, Politics, Philosophy and Economics. PAST PUPILS EXCEL! Former Preparatory School pupils were amongst the highest performing students at both GCSE level and A Level: Lucy Ashfield achieved an outstanding 11 A* grades and a Distinction in her GCSEs; Harriet Bartram-Baird and Molly Conrad achieved 11 A*-A grades; Thomas Macfarlane and Emma Marler achieved 10 A*-A grades; Lucy Greenwood, who is just entering Year 9, took her Mathematics GCSE early and achieved an A* grade - a tremendous achievement for her age. At A Level, Imogen Ovenden and Alex Marler each achieved 2 A* grades and 1 A grade and Portia McEwan achieved 2 A grades and a B grade. Congratulations to all of them on a wonderful set of results!

Notices STAFF ANNOUNCEMENT We are pleased to welcome back Mrs Roe, who has kindly agreed to step back into her position as Director of Music as Miss Taylor has been unable to join us at this time. Mrs Greenwood, one of our woodwind specialists, will be teaching all recorder lessons.
In the sport fleet, Ben Hutton-Penman (Year 6) came 13th out of 70, despite being one of the youngest competitors, achieving 3 top ten places as well as a 4th place position

Refreshments will be served in Beaulieu from 8.30am. PRAYER GROUP All parents and staff are warmly invited to attend our Prayer Group held every Wednesday at 8.20-8.35am. This group is a chance to have some quiet time at the start of the day and to read some psalms and a Gospel passage together. This is a lovely informal gathering and no one has to pray out loud! All are welcome—babies and buggies included!

TRIATHLON Mrs Staines, swimming and triathlon coach at New Hall, has had an extremely successful summer in triathlon. Mrs Staines competed in the Ironman competition and has qualified to represent Team GB at the European and World competitions in 2014. The competition saw her complete a 2.4 mile swim in the North Sea, a 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run in just 11 hours, 26 minutes and 27 seconds, becoming the first place female overall.
CHARITY BIKE RIDE Thomas Mills (5M), is taking part in a charity bike ride for Farleigh Hospice this weekend. He is currently on the leader board for this event with a current total of £3,050! If you would like to sponsor Thomas in this very worthy cause, please go to:
RIDING We would like to invite any families with an interest in either the school’s Equestrian Team or in co-curricular riding lessons to attend a social evening on Wednesday 11 September in the North Room, between 6.00-8.00pm.

New Hall sailing pupils once again did themselves and their school proud by competing in the Tera World Championships. In an ever-changing week of conditions where it went from too much wind to very little, with a scattering of grey skies and choppy seas thrown in for good measure, it is safe to say the sailors experienced a good range of challenges. This was the largest ever Tera World Championships with over 120 entries from nine countries taking to the water at Weymouth on the anniversary of the Olympic Games.
The aim of the evening is to introduce Michael Paveley, our Director of Riding and Ruth Dowie, the Proprietor of Runningwell Equestrian Centre as well as to provide an opportunity to meet with other students/families involved with the school’s Equestrian Team or who attend cocurricular riding lessons. Further details can be obtained on both aspects of riding from the Riding Administrator by email on riding@newhallschool.co.uk. It would be helpful to know in advance if you are planning to attend so that appropriate levels of catering can be ordered. We are delighted to announce that on 1 September 2013 New Hall School became the Academy Sponsor of Messing Primary School through the newly created entity of New Hall Multi-Academy Trust. As an Academy, Messing Primary School will remain fully funded by the Department for Education but will enjoy increased independence to run the school in the way it thinks best. Through its partnership with New Hall School, as part of our charity work, Messing Primary School will be able to draw upon New Hall’s excellent educational record and share sporting, music and community ventures. This is a pioneering project: New Hall School is the first independent school nationally to sponsor a maintained primary school and we look forward to working together for the benefit of the children’s education. We will be delighted to join with Messing Primary School to celebrate its centenary year in 2014, as our own 370 th anniversary celebrations draw to a close this October.
