A WARM WELCOME TO SALON PRIVÉ

What a great pleasure it is to welcome you to the 18th edition of Salon Privé, held once again in this wonderful setting of Blenheim Palace

It’s rewarding to know that so many of you have reserved a special place in your diaries to join us for these magical few days, where like-minds and friends come together in the mutual love of automotive perfection.

First and foremost, Salon Privé is a celebration of the finest classic cars on the planet, and the Salon Privé Concours is acknowledged to be among the very few elite events globally. But also, for our sponsors, premium automotive manufacturers and luxury brands, Salon Privé is a unique experience that offers the perfect environment from which to present your latest and most innovative models and products. We are thrilled and grateful to all of you, whose passion, skill and enthusiasm have helped to energise and embolden both dimensions of Salon Privé 2023.

To the classic car specialists, collectors and owners who have brought examples of incredibly special cars from across the world to take part in the Concours, we

salute you! Salon Privé is still the UK’s only professionally judged ICJAG Concours, and this year, the judges will be considering the merits of 60 wonderful classics, from pre-war sports cars through to the supercar icons of the 21st century. In addition, this year we have several special-celebration car collections for you, from our uniquely curated Yellow Collection to anniversary gatherings marking Porsche’s 75th birthday, Lamborghini’s 60th and Aston Martin’s 110th.

To the premium automotive manufacturers and luxury brands who are bringing their very latest products to Blenheim – many of which will be unveiled here for the first time – we say a heartfelt thanks. It is you who have reimagined the scope of this event, turning it into the complete destination for connoisseurs, customers and fans alike.

We feel very privileged to call Blenheim Palace our home, and His Grace, The 12th Duke of Marlborough, our friend and Patron. We would like to extend our warmest thanks to him, his family and the Blenheim Palace Organisational Team for welcoming us back. Thank you also to our sponsors, Aviva, Boodles, Lockton, Pommery, Boeing Business Jets, Hottinger and Edmond de Rothschild, whose support we could not do without.

And to you, our guests and patrons – thank you and welcome. We hope you have a fabulous time at Salon Privé 2023.

THIS IS BLENHEIM

The history and magnificence of Britain’s greatest palace

his storied place is Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, Oxfordshire. Designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill, home to the 12th Duke of Marlborough… and since 2015, also home to the Salon Privé Concours d’Elégance every summer.

Blenheim is a unique and historic house – one of the largest in England and the only non-royal, nonepiscopal country house to hold the title of palace.

Named after the Battle of Blenheim in 1704, the house was built as a reward from Queen Anne to John Churchill, the 1st Duke of Marlborough, for his successful campaign in the battle, a key moment in the War of the Spanish Succession.

Designed by Sir John Vanbrugh in the rarely seen English baroque style, Blenheim has been called ‘Britain’s greatest palace’.

There is something very magical about this place.

It was conceived as part family home, part national monument, depicting the nation’s power through towering stone columns on its 856ft-long frontage, low towers with crowning belvederes on each

corner of the central block and a gate in the style of a monumental archway.

The palace sits within 2,000 acres of lush green landscape, which was originally enclosed by Henry I as a deer park. The 90 acres of formal gardens were first laid out in the style of Versailles, then remodelled more informally in 1764 by Capability Brown, who created the grand lake. Beside the lake stands a summerhouse known as the Temple of Diana, where in 1908 Sir Winston Churchill proposed to his future wife, Clementine.

Blenheim received its World Heritage Site status in 1987, since when it has created a vision to ‘understand, protect and enhance the outstanding universal value of the site in a sustainable way, as a great work of art and a site of cultural and ecological significance’. Since 2017, the estate has worked to a ten-year, ten-goal plan, whose pledges include becoming a net generator of green energy, tripling Blenheim’s economic contribution to the local area, doubling charitable contributions and building 300 affordable homes.

Best of Show 2022

he stunning 1956 Ferrari 250 GT TdF Berlinetta by Zagato was crowned Best of Show at the 2022 Salon Privé Concours, presented by Aviva.

Built in 1956 for Vladimiro Galluzzi, one of Ferrari’s most valued customers, this lightweight V12-powered Berlinetta was one of only five long-wheelbase 250 GT cars sent to Milan to be coachbuilt by Zagato (the others were bodied by Scaglietti). The car’s voluptuous hand-beaten body, featuring Zagato’s signature double-bubble roof, made it one of the rarest and most beautiful sports cars of all time. Galluzzi raced chassis 0515GT through 1956, including competing in the Mille Miglia, before selling it to racing driver Luigi Taramazzo, who campaigned it for a further two seasons before retiring the car. Owned by US collector David Sydorick, this immaculate and exquisite car was lauded by the Blenheim judges.

Runner-up was a 1938 Alfa Romeo 6C 2300B Mille Miglia Cabriolet by Graber, with a Bentley 8 Litre Saloon by Freestone & Webb in third place. People’s Choice was a 1907 Lorraine Dietrich 130HP ‘Course’, while the Churchill Cup for Most Exceptional Design went to a 1933 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental Sports Coupé by Freestone & Webb.

PERFECTLY JUDGED

Salon Privé is the UK’s only professionally judged, multi-marque concours, setting it apart from all others

he 2023 Salon Privé Concours, presented by Aviva, is proudly and uniquely judged by members of the International Chief Judge Advisory Group (ICJAG). The gold standard of concours judging, these knowledgeable professionals are tasked with focusing on originality, authenticity and condition.

The ICJAG mission is to promote proper preservation and correct restoration of classic automobiles for the benefit of future generations. An important assist in this regard is serious concours judging based on the three pillars of originality, authenticity

and condition – while keeping in mind that cars are meant to be driven.

Salon Privé is an ICJAG Plus event –just one of a small handful that ICJAG endorses worldwide, and the only major concours event endorsed by the group in continental Europe. Not only is Salon Privé chairman Andrew Bagley a great advocate of our mission to focus on originality and authenticity, he and the organisers of Salon Privé genuinely believe our involvement helps to attract a higher standard of entries.

Essentially, the judges are all here to select the best examples from an impressive

list of rare historic motor cars, with the aim of determining which ones should be class winners, and from there, ultimately designating which car most deserves to be awarded Best of Show. And you will see from the esteemed list of judges on the following pages that we are privileged to be able to call on some of the world’s foremost experts and authorities on historic automobiles.

SALON PRIVÉ CONCOURS PRESENTED BY AVIVA

Here on Blenheim’s South Lawn we present an unrivalled collection of the world’s finest and rarest automobiles

or 17 consecutive years we have been proud to say that there is no Concours event in the UK quite like the Salon Privé Concours presented by Aviva. The only Concours event judged by ICJAG, the most knowledgeable experts in the automotive world, the event has become a must-visit destination for car enthusiasts from around the globe.

For a few precious days each summer, these lawns become the epicentre of the motor car universe, where the cream of owners, specialists, restorers and collectors come together to present an astonishing

and eclectic array of classic vehicles. Yet Salon Privé is so much more than just a car show. With a long-earned reputation for the best in premium hospitality, it becomes a vibrant gathering of like-minded people – a prestigious social occasion ‘where the car world goes to have fun.’

On the lawns this year, classic sports racers rub shoulders with valuable grand tourers, era-defining icons and racing legends in a display that celebrates more than a century of motoring excellence. In addition, there will be jaw-dropping modern-era supercars mixing it with future concepts, plus the

30
F

latest models from legendary manufacturers such as Ferrari and Lamborghini, and new, high-tech car makers, such as Theon Design and Totem Automobili.

This year’s Concours d’Elégance features a carefully curated mix of more than 60 historic cars. Among them will be a quite exceptional pair of 1950s Ferrari 212s, each with coachwork by Vignale, which capture the era when Enzo Ferrari first sought to embrace the export market for both road cars and privateer racers.

Far from being identical twins, each of these cars cleverly targeted a different market sector: the 212 Export, with its shorter wheelbase and more highly tuned Colombo V12 engine, was designed for competition, whereas the 212 Inter, with its more capacious cabin and ‘softer’ performance, was aimed at the burgeoning overseas GT sector.

Both cars are American based, and have won numerous awards at Pebble Beach, Cavallino Classic and Rodeo Drive, and we are privileged to see them making their UK debut at Salon Privé this year.

The Ferraris seem positively modern next to two spectacular French historics dating back to the start of the 20th century – the single-cylinder Bardon Type A Tonneau from 1900 and the 1907 Renault Vanderbilt Racer. These incredible cars, both entered in the Veterans & Pioneers Class, remind us how far advanced the French automobile

industry was at the time and, in comparing these two cars’ performance, how quickly technology was moving, even back then.

Of course, every year throws up anniversaries in the automotive world, but there is no doubt that 2023 will be remembered as a bumper year for significant birthdays. You will be able to see several of these celebrated here at Blenheim this week, including the 60th anniversary of Lamborghini, McLaren’s 60th, Porsche’s 75th and even Aston Martin’s 110th.

In addition, following on from our successful Red Collection in 2021 and last year’s Platinum Collection in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Jubilee, we’re very pleased to present a unique and fastidiously curated display for 2023: the Yellow Collection. This distinctive and, famously, most safe of roadgoing colours adorns a stirring group of iconic cars, creating a marque-crossing club the like of which has never been assembled.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank every owner who has entered a car into this year’s Salon Privé. We are honoured to be the recipients of all your hard work, including the considerable planning and dedication required to transport often priceless cars to Blenheim, especially those that have been shipped from overseas. You may be assured that no audience in the world could be any more appreciative than our discerning Salon Privé guests.

SPIRIT OF ELECTRIC ECSTASY

n the year 1900, six years before he formed his eponymous partnership with Henry Royce, Charles Rolls prophecised an electric future for the motor car. “The electric car is perfectly noiseless and clean; there is no smell or vibration,” he said. “They should become very useful when fixed charging stations can be arranged.”

Following this prophetic statement, Charles spent the best part of a century perfecting and defining automotive luxury with a range of cars powered by vast internal combustion engines, but finally his day has come.

Rolls-Royce has brought to bear its best engineers and innovators, its most exhaustive ever proving programme, 2.5 million kilometres of testing and years of fine-tuning to achieve what it believes to be the finest EV yet created: Spectre.

Spectre is a two-door coupe, although forget any notions of a compact sports car. Those two doors are each 1.5m wide and hinged at the rear (they open

automatically), the car is 5.4m long and 2m wide, it weighs very nearly three tonnes and, at 23 inches, the wheels are the biggest on a Rolls for 100 years. Even so, Spectre is a high performer – it has a low drag profile of just 0.23cd, can accelerate to 60mph in 4.4 seconds, its four electric motors develop 577bhp (powered by BMW’s biggest ever battery pack) and it has a range of 320 miles. The car is also loaded with digital technology.

“Spectre is perfectly in tune with the sensibilities of our time,” says Rolls CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös. “It answers a call from the most discerning individuals in the world to elevate the electric car experience, because it is a Rolls-Royce first and an electric car second.”

Two Spectres will be on display, along with a bespoke edition of the top-selling Rolls-Royce Ghost. A second Ghost, in Tucana Purple, has the honour of leading the Tour Privé through the Cotswolds on 29 August.

AN ITALIAN LEGEND REBORN

Totem Automobili breathes

21st-century life into Alfa

Romeo’s 1960s GTA

This is the future, 1960s style, seen in the UK for the first time at Salon Privé. Former Alfa designer Riccardo Quaggio always dreamt of recreating the Giulia GTA, the scintillating compact coupe that swept all before it as a road car and racer in the late 1960s and early 70s.

To make his dream reality, Quaggio formed Totem Automobili in 2018, using state-of-the-art engineering and technology to transform classic Italian vehicles into innovative, evocative and highly desirable modern interpretations.

Here’s the result – the Totem GT – a carbon-bodied masterpiece presenting ‘a new aesthetic and technological concept of Gran Turismo’.

Although starting life from an original Alfa Giulia GT Junior, only the bulkhead of the donor car survives. The GT Electric is the zero emissions version, its electric motor producing around 590bhp. Digital by design but analogue at heart, the car offers launch control, drift engine braking, rear-wheel drive and even simulated engine noise via 13 handmade speakers, plus gearshift jolts and engine vibrations. The GT Super is powered by Totem’s lightweight twin-turbo V6, which develops as much as 750bhp.

“We keep the design, we keep the aesthetic of the original, but in the end it’s a new car,” says Quaggio. Welcome then to the Giulia that never was.

ALL THE PRANCING HORSES

Ferrari is showcasing both its future and its heritage – and there’s a little of each accounted for in the all-new yet pleasingly retro-inspired Roma Spider. Alongside will be the other end of the current model range, the Purosangue SUV. Although technically an SUV, think of it more as a raised coupe, the first ever Ferrari with four passenger doors. Also on show (and for sale) will be three stunning modern classics – a Ferrari F40, Ferrari Enzo and Ferrari 599SA Aperta.

ON DAYS LIKE THESE

Although it was 54 years ago, surely everyone remembers those opening minutes of The Italian Job – Matt Monroe singing On Days Like These as a Lamborghini Miura winds its way along an alpine pass. But how many can remember the sunglasses actor Rossano Brazzi was wearing? It was a pair of Renauld Mustangs, and thanks to that fleeting moment of fame, Renauld is regarded as the maker of the world’s finest driving sunglasses. Racing drivers and airline pilots favoured the wraparound design due to its 180-degree optical perfection and absence of blind spots. Now firmly established in Windsor, Renauld is coming to Salon Privé to showcase its range of reimagined classics and new designs, reconnecting with the exotic motoring heritage with which, thanks to that movie, it will always be associated.

A LITTLE F1 MAGIC

For three decades the Enstone factory in Oxfordshire has been the epicentre of Renaultbacked F1 legends and champions, and since 2021 it has been the base for the Alpine F1 team. Now Alpine has honoured Enstone with its own limited edition of the critically acclaimed A110S road car, and this special model will be making an appearance at Blenheim. The cockpit incorporates elements of the carbon fibre used on the F1 car. Limited to just 300 units, it comes in two shades of grey with matt black Union Jack motif roof.

A BIKE, BUT NOT AS WE KNOW IT

The new Evari 856 British Racing Edition launches at Salon Privé

Silverstone-based Evari has a mission to ‘shake up the make-up’ of how bikes are built – and it’s no idle claim. Evari’s hand-built electric bikes are created by a team described as ‘maddeningly meticulous and intrinsically curious’ – and their latest creation is taking its bow here at Blenheim. The Evari 856 –the new British Racing Edition of which we’ll be seeing for the first time – is an all-in-one e-bike perfect for grand touring, commuting and leisure rides. It excels on both roads and gravel, thanks to its total electronic integration system and bespoke components, including the frameset, covers, cockpit and rims, all exclusively tailored to the 856. The new version is painted British Racing Green with classic race number detailing, and is a superlimited edition. Only eight will be built.

THE AGE OF REIMAGINING

Welcome to another level of future-proofing past glories

he Porsche 911 from 1989. The 1970s Range Rover Chieftain. The rally-spec Escort Mk1. The Jensen Interceptor. All of them iconic yet ultimately compromised by the march of time. But in the hands of obsessively talented teams in the UK’s specialist sector, they live again – as joyous examples of the past rendered as new. Among the talents demonstrating their magic at Blenheim are Theon Design, the Oxfordshire-based outfit specialising in OEM-grade reimaginings of the air-cooled Porsche 911 964. Seen here for the first time will be Theon’s first UK commission – GBR001 – which represents the pinnacle of this concept.

Built to the precise specification of its customer, the stunning carbonbodied GBR001 features visual carbon bodywork elements, warm chrome brightwork and wheels, semi-active suspension and a raucous 3.8-litre naturally aspirated flat-six.

Another extraordinary group of talents is to be found in Banbury, where the team at JIA have become masters of repurposing the Jensen Interceptor, and more recently, in recreating the original 1970s Range Rover Classic with a hybrid electric powertrain. Bearing the name Chieftain,

this exceptional SUV builds on JIA’s proven bespoke chassis upgrades by blending modern V8 power with a fully in-house designed and built EV solution.

For North Wales-based MST Cars, the passion for reimagining a classic focuses on a different icon – the most successful rally car of all time, the Escort Mk1 and Mk2. MST has created a car based on that classic design and rear-wheel-drive platform, brought up to date with modern tech, a new, more powerful naturally aspirated engine and a state-of-the-art electrical system.

THE LOTUS REVOLUTION

Test drive the new generation at Salon Privé

he changes at Lotus, notably Chinese ownership and the new breed of electric cars, have been enough to test the belief of enthusiasts and customers alike. It’s hard to imagine getting further from Colin Chapman’s infamous mantra of “simplify, then add lightness” than the 2520kg Eletre. But while this huge electric SUV presents a challenge to purists, customers may have a different view. Reviews have already concluded that whatever else the Chinese may have done to Lotus, they haven’t lost its knack of creating memorable drives.

You can make up your own mind at Salon Privé – Lotus is offering guests a test drive in the Eletre. And those who still hanker after a ‘closer to Chapman’ experience, there will also be an opportunity to test the Emira V6, the last hurrah of internal combustion Lotuses made in Hethel.

If even the Emira is still too modish for your taste, the Lotus stand at Blenheim also promises an Esprit S1 from 1976. This achingly iconoclastic supercar, immortalised in The Spy Who Loved Me , remains a defining achievement in British automotive folklore.

PARTY LIKE IT’S 1963!

Like all Lamborghinis before it since 1963, the new Revuelto will make quite an entrance. It will leave Salon Privé visitors open-mouthed with its sharpedged yet fluid design language, described as “adrenaline made visible”. But what will captivate even more is its radical powertrain, because Revuelto is the first supersports V12 hybrid plug-in HPEV (High Performance Electrified Vehicle).

Revuelto ushers out the Aventador, marking a turning point in that 60-year story, which is celebrated by a display of 70 V12 Lamborghinis.

Mc LAREN, ONLY MORE SO

McLaren had its work cut out to improve on the 720S, a supercar widely acknowledged to be the most complete achievement in the firm’s history. But the all-new 750S, freshly launched this summer and appearing at Salon Privé for the first time, seems set to surpass the dizzying standards of its predecessor. Thoroughly updated and enhanced, 750S gets a power hike to 750PS (hence the name), while at the same time losing 30kg in weight, giving it a best-in-class power-to-weight ratio of 579bhp per tonne.

WORLD’S FIRST SUPER TOURER

Aston’s DB12 is in a league of its own

n the case of the new Aston Martin DB12, the term Grand Tourer simply isn’t enough. Combining a scintillating driving experience with exceptional refinement, state-of-the-art technology and indulgent luxury, this car represents a quantum shift in sporting character and dynamic capability. They’re calling it a Super Tourer.

DB12, which was launched just a few short months ago, will be on display at Blenheim, exactly 75 years after the first DB model was launched. Engineered to maximise performance and intensify emotion, the car is a product of a holistic approach, with every element from the chassis stiffness to the tuning of the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, and the all-new suspension to the made-to-measure 21in Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, being finessed and perfected to an obsessive degree.

Joining DB12 on display will be DBX707, a wildly pumped über-version of Aston’s lauded SUV, with power increased from 542bhp to 697bhp, and a whole raft of dynamic upgrades. Such is the achievement here that Autocar called it “the best car Aston Martin makes”. Salon Privé guests will also see the visceral 911-baiting V12 Vantage, the limited-run 200mph super-coupe packing a 690bhp 5.2-litre V12.

THE FUTURE ON TWO WHEELS

Made in the UK, the Arc Vector is the world’s most advanced fully electric motorcycle – and you’ll see it here at Blenheim. Created by Arc Vehicle, a team of ground-breaking British designers and engineers in Coventry, the Vector is the greenest, safest and most fulfilling bike ever created. The rider sits astride a handmade motorcycle with lightweight carboncomposite structure and ingeniously elegant battery module. Alongside Arc will be two custom bike specialist brands – Thornton Hundred and Krazy Horse. Bucks-based Thornton Hundred represents the epitome of engineering and class. Based on brand-new, factory-sourced Triumphs, its hand-built products include the world’s first passenger seat conversion on the Triumph Bobber and the 300hp Triumph Bobber drag bike. Krazy Horse is a group of motorcycle and car dealerships that were started by Paul Beamish in 1995. Now the outfit is not just a customisation specialist, but also a destination main dealer for a range of brands, including MV Agusta, Indian and Norton. Krazy Horse will have a range of Indian Motorcycle models on show, along with exclusive one-off bikes from the Krazy Horse Custom collection.

THE YELLOW COLLECTION

This year’s special car collection features a variety of superclassics united by one thing: the colour yellow

rick roads, ribbons, submarines, big taxis… add the word yellow and an icon is revealed. Yellow is a significant colour for cars, too, being famously favoured as one of the few core brand colours for Ferrari, Lamborghini and Lotus, among others. Indeed, yellow was a cool and edgy colour choice favoured by the discerning and eschewed by mainstream car makers until Del Boy came along to trample that illusion with a three-wheeled Reliant van that is now indisputably the most famous yellow car of all time.

Yellow also happens to be the safest car colour, just pipping white for safety rating and accident risk. It stands out from the landscape of trees, houses and road signs, and is more noticeable because it’s less common. We doubt, though, that the owners of the fabulous cars in the Salon Privé Yellow Collection were thinking about road safety. In the case of at least one of them, the colour is so rare it massively adds to the car’s value.

Here’s a taste of a few of the cars in the collection…

ASTON MARTIN DB4GT

The DB4GT is one of the most valuable and collectable cars in Aston Martin’s history –only 75 were made between 1959 and 1963, and examples have sold for more than £1m at auction.

The DB4GT, which launched at the London Motor Show in October 1959, was a lightweight, high-performance version of the DB4, featuring a shortened chassis (by 13cm), faired-in headlamps, thinner 18-gauge aluminium bodywork and a substantially uprated engine. The claimed power output of 302bhp gave the GT a 62bhp advantage over the standard car, while the GT’s top speed of 151mph and 0-60mph time of 6.1 secs made it the fastest road-legal production car of the time.

The car was 85kg lighter than the DB4 and was raced extensively with success by many famous drivers of the day, including Jim Clark, Stirling Moss, Roy Salvadori and Innes Ireland. It was regularly

competing against the Ferrari 250GT. A year after the car’s launch, a Zagato-bodied version was unveiled featuring a stunning lightweight body from the famous Italian coachbuilder. Only 19 of these were made, and that rarity is reflected in their high value today. The car being displayed at Blenheim, courtesy of Tom Hartley Jnr, is a truly special 1960 example. It is one of only two DB4GTs supplied in Pale Primrose, and the only one remaining in this colour. It’s a full matching-numbers car, including its chassis, body, engine (block and head) and gearbox, and is fresh from a total refurbishment by marque expert Spray Tec, with all works managed and overseen by Aston Martin historian Stephen Archer.

For Aston Martin, this is truly a landmark model, because the concept of a true trackready GT started and stopped with the DB4GT.

FERRARI SF90 STRADALE

SF90 stands for Scuderia Ferrari 90 years, with ‘stradale’ meaning ‘made for the road’. In 2019, when production of the car commenced, it also shared the name of that year’s Ferrari F1 car, campaigned by Sebastian Vettel and debutant Charles Leclerc. Aside from the name, Ferrari was keen to champion the SF90 as the perfect demonstration of how Maranello quickly transitions the knowledge it acquires in competition to its production cars. Brought to Blenheim by Dick Lovett Ferrari Swindon, this 2021-year SF90 Stradale is extreme on every level. A mid-engined plug-in hybrid electric sports car, it is the first Ferrari sports car to be equipped with 4WD, which helps make the car the new benchmark for standing starts: 0-100 km/h in 2.5 secs and 0-200 km/h in just 6.7 secs. The car has three electric motors, adding a further 227bhp to the sobering 769bhp developed by the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine.

LAMBORGHINI DIABLO SV

In 1993, when Lamborghini gave the Diablo VT four-wheel drive, some purists baulked at the idea. Had the ‘devil car’ lost its evil edge? Either way, no such charge could be levelled at the SV, which two years later in 1995 revived the Super Veloce badge last seen on the Miura SV, ramping the Diablo’s power to 510bhp from the 485bhp of the ‘base’ car. Of course, no Diablo could ever be described as base – this firebreathing Countach replacement was the first production Lamborghini to top 200mph. This immaculate 1998 Diablo SV has been brought to Blenheim by Furlonger Specialist Cars.

FERRARI 250 LM

When Ferrari won Le Mans earlier this year everyone knew it had been a long wait. Incredible though it seems, the last time the Prancing Horse scored an overall victory at La Sarthe was in 1965 – and the car that won it was the 250 LM. In fact, Ferrari scored a one-two that year, and the car that finished second is the actual 1965 car you’ll see at Salon Privé, courtesy of Barkaways. Its success, in the hands of the Ecurie Francorchamps racing team, makes this car one of the most famous historic Ferraris. The 250 LM was launched in 1963 as a coupe version of the 250 P, which was a response to the FIA’s new prototype class in the World Sportscar Championship. It was the first time a V12 was mounted in the rear of a Ferrari sports-car racer.

LAMBORGHINI MURCIELAGO LP580 MANUAL

Eleven years after Diablo came Murcielago, the first flagship Lamborghini under the stewardship of Audi. And despite the fourwheel-drive layout, any fears about Audi’s intentions were erased by the reassuring presence of a 6.2-litre V12, a six-speed manual transmission, and a design by Luc Donckerwolke that thrillingly fused Lamborghini past with Lamborghini future. True to the benchmarks, Murcielago could breach 200mph and arrive at 62mph in just 3.8 secs

This 2003 example, courtesy of Furlonger Specialist Cars, is an LP580, which means it’s one of the first editions of the car. Although subsequent upgrades rejoiced in names such as LP640 and LP670, the original car was never referred to as LP580 – it was simply Murcielago.

LOTUS ESPRIT S1

Unveiled in concept form by Ital Design in November 1972, Giugiaro’s strikingly angular Lotus Esprit entered production in the summer of 1976. Replacing the Lotus Europa, the Esprit was an upmarket and exclusive proposition. Esprit enjoyed a production run of 28 years, during which 10,675 examples were built at the company’s Norfolk base, until production ceased in 2004. The first series saw just 268 right-hand-drive examples built, of which this is one. Esprit was not only a true example of Colin Chapman’s lightweight mantra, weighing less than 1,000kg, it also became an icon, partly thanks to its starring role alongside Roger Moore in two James Bond films.

LAMBORGHINI ESPADA

Espada wasn’t your typical Lamborghini. Perhaps the first clue is in the name – while most Lambos are named after fighting bulls, Espada takes its name from the torero’s sword. The car was a front-engined, two-door, four-seater GT coupe, but while that sounds like a tame formula for Sant’Agata, the car’s design was anything but tame. Marcello Gandini made a conscious shift away from the more conservative Islero, which launched with Espada at the 1968 Geneva Show. Riffing on his Marzal concept car, he gifted the car its distinctive ‘long bonnet/bulbous rear’ profile and placed octagonal instrument housings on the dashboard. This beautiful example is courtesy of George Lambton.

2001 Ferrari 550 Barchetta Pininfarina

Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 2000, the 550 Barchetta Pininfarina was so named to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Ferrari’s coachbuilder and stylist. Underneath the bonnet is a 478hp, 5.5l V12 mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Just 448 cars were built, with the last leaving the factory in December 2001.

We are delighted to offer this Ferrari Classiche Certified example. Finished in iconic Rosso Corsa with a Charcoal leather interior that features medium racing seats. First registered in September 2001, this example has covered just 3,494 miles from new. The car comes complete with history folder, luggage, and carbon fibre racing helmets.

2006 Porsche Carrera GT

Instantly recognisable, the Porsche Carrera GT captivates enthusiasts with its striking design and precise engineering. Its now legendary naturally aspirated V10 engine produces 612 horsepower, and is widely regarded as one of the best sounding engines of all time. Its engine, carbon fibre construction, and manual transmission make for a visceral driving experience at any speed.

Our example is finished in GT Silver with an Ascot Brown leather interior. Registered in June 2006, it has covered just 3,235 miles with its one previous owner. The car comes complete with full Ascot Brown leather luggage. With only 1,270 units produced, there is no doubt that the Carrera GT has become a highly sought-after collector’s car

A hundred years of Le Mans

To mark the centenary of the world’s oldest continuing motor race, Blenheim is proud to welcome some iconic endurance racers

e Mans is the world’s definitive endurance race – the motorsport event that’s regarded as the toughest of them all. First held in 1923 on public roads, it was conceived to provide a different test to the Grand Prix races that dominated racing at the time. The challenge was not how fast, but how far The pre-war years were dominated by Alfa Romeo, Bugatti and Bentley, but in the technically advanced era after 1945, it was Ferrari and Jaguar, Aston Martin and Maserati – and of course, Porsche. The latter became and remains the most successful elite endurance marque of all time, with 19 race wins at Le Mans alone, and the three incredible cars featured opposite epitomise the breadth and evolution of that legacy. Joining those three here at Blenheim will be two other legends of the endurance breed – the Jaguar XJ220, immortalised at Le Mans in 1993, and the phenomenally successful works-backed 2011 Ferrari 458 GTE. Here’s to the next 100 years!

remaining. A return in 1986 saw Jochen Mass, Bob Wollek and Schuppan take pole at Le Mans, running second for more than 10 hours before retiring. A record eight Group C Le Mans-winning drivers, including Derek Bell, all raced this chassis in four consecutive seasons.

The second of the three Richard Lloyd Racing bespoke 962s featured a unique honeycomb and carbon chassis designed by Nigel Stroud. Built new for the 1988 season and specifically for Derek Bell to lead his championship assault for RLR. The car scored a fourth place on debut, recorded the fastest lap at Spa and scored a podium finish at the Tampa World Challenge. In 1989, it scored a strong second place at Silverstone in the hands of Tiff Needell, who also joined Derek Bell and James Weaver for the 1989 Le Mans 24hrs, running strongly until an oil leak forced retirement from a creditable seventh place against the might of the works teams with two hours remaining. A strong fourth place was achieved by Bell and Needell at the final world championship round in Mexico that year.

THE BIRTHDAY LEGENDS

58
Game changer! In 1966, the Miura, named after a fighting bull, appeared to have been teleported from the future

LAMBORGHINI: 60 YEARS OF SHOCK AND AWE

uper car became ‘supercar’ the moment Lamborghini launched the spectacular Miura at the 1966 Geneva Salon, as the world’s media reached for new superlatives to describe a machine that appeared to come directly from the future. It’s hard to overstate the impact of the Bertone/Gandini-penned Miura. It was impossibly exotic on every level – even its name oozed glamour. It made a Lamborghini the must-have accessory for the glitterati.

The Miura was quite an achievement for a company created by an enthusiast because he couldn’t buy the car he wanted, but which, at that time, was barely three years old.

Ferruccio Lamborghini was born in Renazzo, Ferrara, on 28 April 1916. The eldest son of

farmers Antonio and Evelina, it was assumed he would work on the farm, but fascinated by machinery, he secured a job with Cavalier Righi’s workshop in Bologna. At 18, he opened his own garage in Renazzo, but war intervened and he spent the conflict maintaining military vehicles, later converting them for civilians. By the end of the 1940s, he was producing tractors and agricultural machinery.

Although he raced only once, crashing a Fiat out of the 1948 Mille Miglia, and refused to countenance ideas of his eponymous company going racing, he loved fast cars, and by the late 1950s, could afford to indulge this passion. He owned a Ferrari 250GT/E he felt was neither adequately developed nor as fast and refined as it should be. He

approached Enzo Ferrari about this and was not treated as seriously as he had hoped. Having modified it with a new clutch and custom-made twin-cam cylinder heads, then proven it substantially faster than the original, he decided to build the GT he wanted. His idea was not to be revolutionary but rather to offer the detail, quality and refinement he had expected of his Ferrari. Ironically, he hired several Ferrari staff after the infamous ‘palace revolt’, and the first car, the 350GTV, was presented as a prototype at the 1963 Turin Show. Its production sibling, the 350GT, was immediately perceived as a serious contender. Since the Miura, Lamborghini has built nothing but dramatic, instantly recognisable cars. Front-engine GTs, such as the Espada and underrated Jarama, as well as V8powered junior supercars like the Jalpa, have accompanied the mid-engine V12 supercars Lamborghini is most famous for – Countach, Diablo, Murciélago, Aventador. The prototype of the sensational scissordoored Countach was unveiled in 1971, but before it could go into production, Ferruccio sold 51 per cent of his car business and gradually withdrew. Ownership changes and financial turbulence followed, but the cars remained spectacular. Audi has owned the company since 1998, adding top-end quality but embracing the extrovert character. Ferruccio would surely approve.

Mc LAREN AT 60

What Bruce McLaren began in the 1960s, his successors, from Ron Dennis to Gordon Murray, Senna to Hamilton, have emphatically continued M

cLaren is the second most successful team in the history of F1, having won 183 GPs since their debut in 1966. Only Ferrari has a greater win tally (242 at time of writing), but then it has been in the sport since 1950. McLaren and Ferrari are natural rivals in F1 and could well have been so in the road car world, too, had McLaren’s talismanic founder, Bruce McLaren, not died in a tragic testing accident at Goodwood Circuit on 2 June 1970, just as his inaugural road car project, the M6GT, was being developed. His small and loyal team continued to race, Denny Hulme and Peter Revson taking Cam-Am titles in 1970 and 1971 to add to the three scored in Bruce’s lifetime. By 1974, Gordon Coppuck’s M23 had brought Emerson Fittipaldi his second

F1 Championship and McLaren its first Constructors’ title.

Bruce had come to the UK from his native New Zealand after winning the ‘Driver to Europe’ scholarship. He’d started hill climbing a self-modified Austin 7 when only 14, and on 12 December 1959, when just 22, he became the youngest driver to win in F1, at Sebring, Florida. McLaren drove for Cooper in F1 until the end of 1965 and won Le Mans in 1966 at the wheel of a Ford GT40. A qualified engineer, he’d started creating his own cars in Cooper’s workshop in the early 1960s, and on 2 September 1963, founded Bruce McLaren Motor Racing, initially to enter sports car racing. In 1968, he took his only F1 win in a McLaren at the Belgian GP at Spa.

60

McLaren’s James Hunt won the famously fraught 1976 Championship, but by 1980, the team were in the doldrums and sponsor Marlboro backed a merger with Ron Dennis’s Project Four F2 team and their designer John Barnard. That led to one of the most successful F1 teams of any era as Dennis brought in new levels of preparation and presentation, while Barnard designed the first all carbon-fibre F1 car to actually race, the MP4/1 (let’s not start the Lotus 88 conversation). McLaren remained at

the pinnacle of F1 thereafter, with drivers such as Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost and Mika Häkkinen taking multiple championships. Gordon Murray joined McLaren from Brabham as technical director in 1987 and, after the 1988 Italian GP, while waiting for a delayed flight in Milan, he, Dennis, Mansour Ojjeh and Creighton Brown discussed building a supercar, just as Bruce had done 20 years before. The resulting 1992 BMWpowered three-seater, the F1, remains the greatest no-compromise performance road

car ever built and, despite Murray’s initial declaration it was not to be raced, won Le Mans in 1995. The McLaren Mercedes SLR followed in 2004, but the launch of the MP412C in 2010 marked the start of McLaren’s entry into the world of full manufacturing in volumes they had not seen before. Like the F1, it was based on a carbon-fibre tub and featured innovative suspension, plus the company’s own V8. McLaren has since become a benchmark in the supercar world, pioneering hypercars with the P1 in 2013 and offering a diverse range while retaining the basic two-seat/mid-engine supercar recipe. The 10,000th McLaren was built in 2016 and the company has become an example of British automotive success. Bruce would no doubt be fascinated by the technology of the cars that still proudly bear his name.

ASTON MARTIN AT 110

From a ‘Coal Scuttle’ to the F1 podium, Le Mans to Newport Pagnell, receivership to James Bond, and still one of the world’s most desirable brands

62

ince engineer Robert Bamford and gentleman racing driver Lionel Martin decided in 1913 to build a special to race in hill-climb events, including those up Aston Hill, near Aston Clinton, Buckinghamshire, the name Aston Martin has graced sporting cars built to a quality not a price. The pair ran a garage in Chelsea’s Henniker Mews, London, and their first car, the ‘Coal Scuttle’, was completed by 1915. It became a frequent postwar competitor and a second prototype was completed in 1920. Bamford moved on but Martin and wife Kate, an accomplished racing driver who had persuaded Martin to put Aston before Martin for alphabetical reasons, moved to Kensington and built a small number of successful racing cars that earned 1.5-litre speed records. Production commenced in earnest in 1923, but despite a fine reputation, the cars were expensive at £700 and the 50 sold did not generate sufficient income to fund motor racing. Aston went into receivership and emerged in 1926 under the stewardship of Italianborn Augustus Bertelli. A period of creativity followed. Their 1.5-litre cars were, again, expensive but among the best in class, and the beautiful Ulster was the ultimate incarnation, taking a third overall and class victory at the 1935 Le Mans. In 1947, Aston was rescued by yet another wealthy enthusiast, David Brown, who purchased the company for £20,500 and the equally moribund Lagonda shortly after. The latter came with gifted stylist Frank Feeley and a promising 2.6-litre straight-six twin-cam engine, the LB6,

designed by WO Bentley and Willie Watson. Brown married the Aston Martin Atom prototype with the LB6 engine and an elegant Feeley shape to create the DB2, which would become their mainstay (with updates) from 1950-1959. Throughout the 1950s, Aston’s DB3S and DBR1 harried Ferrari and Jaguar in long-distance sports-car racing, finally taking victory at Le Mans and the World Sports Car Championship in 1959. Brown moved production to Newport Pagnell in the late 1950s and the company would remain there, navigating several financial crises while handbuilding the glorious DB4/5/6 then V8 line of cars until the last V12 Vanquish was built in 2007. Aston was introduced into the world of James Bond via the series’ seventh book, Goldfinger, published in 1959, in which Bond drives a DB2/4 MkIII. The filmmakers updated it to the company’s then-new DB5 for Sean Connery, defining Aston’s image ever since.

Ford took the reins in 1987, buying the company from yet another enthusiast owner, Victor Gauntlet, but although the blue oval oversaw Aston’s modernisation, economic pressure forced a sale in 2007. The investment, however, begat the bestselling DB7 and the Gaydon-built aluminiumarchitecture cars such as the DB9 and Rapide. Aston now goes into the middle of the 21st century with investment from MercedesBenz and (among others) another wealthy enthusiast, Canadian Lawrence Stroll, whose passion for F1 has returned the name to motorsport’s premier class.

LONDON CALLING

Building on the success of its first two years, Salon Privé London is back at Royal Hospital Chelsea from 18-20 April 2024

or prestige car makers, Salon Privé London is fast inheriting the mantle held for more than a century by the legendary Geneva International Motor Show, the event around which the automotive planets orbited until, in 2020, it became the first big casualty of lockdown. The first European car event of the year, Salon Privé London takes the key pillars that made Geneva so important and distils them into a purer form, making a direct connection between premium brands and the customers who buy them.

64
F
SALON PRIVÉ LONDON

“Salon Privé London has the right location and time of the year and it attracts genuine customers as opposed to purely enthusiasts,” says David Bagley, co-founder of Salon Privé. “Ultimately, the brands want to entertain their key customers whilst also meeting new ones and that’s the opportunity Salon Privé provides them with.

“The venue is integral to creating a different experience to other events. RHC permits only four events per year and

so it was a great achievement and honour for us to be accepted, and furthermore for us to be staying there until at least 2026. It is perfect for our audience.”

The 2023 event was a recordbreaker, with 18,287 visitors over three days, and a number of exclusive new car unveils, including the Ferrari Roma Spider, Maserati GranTurismo, Rolls-Royce Phantom Extended, Wiesmann Project Thunderball, Hennessey Venom F5 Roadster

and Abarth 500e Scorpionissima. The event hosted celebrities such as Jenson Button and Richard Hammond, as well as the unique and stunning Concours de Vente, in which more than 70 exquisite classics were presented for admiration and also for sale. The Prix d’Honneur winner this year was particularly special – a 1954 Aston Martin DB2/4 Vignale commissioned by King Baudouin of Belgium.

A wide array of luxury brands gracing the lawns included Montblanc, debuting its new 8000 Capsule Collection, legendary jeweller Boodles, Norton Motorcycles, Sloane Helicopters and Andrews Boathouses.
