ABOUT BEAUFORT POLO CLUB
With a heritage traceable as far back as 1872, the Beaufort Polo Club has a lineage as long as any in the sport’s history. Since being revived in its present guise 35 years ago it has become the foremost centre for the development of polo in the Cotswolds, with a mission to serve and nurture players of all levels, as well as providing first class facilities and entertainment for members, sponsors and spectators alike.
Set right in the heart of the Cotswolds countryside near Tetbury, Gloucestershire, alongside the 600-acre National
Arboretum at Westonbirt, the club features a superb Equus Design & Build Outdoor Arena, a recently resurfaced indoor school with heated viewing gallery, and a TopRide Equestrian surface exercise track. It also boasts six boarded polo grounds, livery, stabling and schooling, and a delightful clubhouse. Highlight of the season is in June when the club plays host to the Gloucestershire Festival of Polo, pairing top class polo, including an England vs Ireland international match, with entertainment, displays, hospitality and a tented shopping village.
A PROUD HISTORY
The original club dates back to 1872, when Colonel Frank Henry returned from the ninth Lancers, the regiment first responsible for bringing polo to England. In 1928 the present club was formed by members of the Beaufort Hunt, but never restarted after being mothballed for the Second World War. It was revived by Simon and Claire Tomlinson in 1989 with the aim of encouraging young players as well as providing superb facilities for players and spectators. Claire Tomlinson was a polo legend, and a trailblazer for women in sport. Although she sadly passed away in 2022, her legacy looms large at Beaufort. She was the first woman to compete against men on equal terms, having persuaded the Hurlingham Polo Association to allow women to compete in high-goal tournaments, and became the first
woman player in the world to achieve a handicap of five. She coached the England polo team, as well as teaching Princes William and Harry to play the game at Beaufort, and she instigated the HPA coaching system on which all modern polo training is now based.
The Tomlinsons’ three children are all part of the continuing polo dynasty for which Beaufort is famous. Emma is a veterinarian and polo coach, while Luke and Mark are both high-goal international polo stars. Both played for England, Luke captaining his country for a decade, and as joint club chairmen both play leading roles in Beaufort’s ongoing success.
The Beaufort Polo School, established by Claire, boasts a team of HPA qualified coaches, and the club encourages young riders through courses run for the Pony Club and schools.

For 2024 Newhall Publishing will once again produce the Beaufort Polo Club Annual, presented in the same clean, stylish, high quality format that was so well received in 2023. The publication will reflect the club’s upward direction, rewarding existing members and helping to attract new members to the club. Beautifully designed and printed on premium quality paper, the Annual will appeal to both playing and social members, with fresh, compelling content and signposting helping to engage both audiences. The book will contain a mix of features ranging from providing information about the club, the playing season and the calendar of events, to a focus on social highlights, hospitality, the Polo School and the outdoor arena.
As well as a review of the 2023 season, featuring reports on five showpiece tournaments and all the key charity events, there will be interview with important Club figures, plus feature profiles, the inside story on important polo issues, and all the background on this season’s best playing ponies.

The print run will be 3,000 copies. These will be mailed to existing playing and social members, as well as being available to day-to-day visitors and those attending events held at the Club throughout the year. In addition, in order to widen the circulation and promotion of the Club, we seek to secure further circulation through a wide variety of outlets, including:
– Local independent hotels and further afield hotel groups
– Bristol University, The Royal Agricultural University
and Harper Adams University
– Links with high-end car dealerships
– Supply of copies to those who advertise within the Annual, and to sponsors of the club for their clients and guests at polo matches and social events
– Distribution to corporate and city offices.
