THE ROYAL CONNECTION

Royal Windsor Horse Show started in 1943 as an event to raise money for the war effort - specifically to fund spitfires. It was supported by The Royal Family then and has been so ever since.

Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was Patron of the Show for many years and we are delighted that His Majesty King Charles III has taken on that role. The Duke of Edinburgh is President of the Show and is closely supported by his Vice-Presidents which include The Duchess of Edinburgh and The Princess Royal.

“Royal Windsor is like no other Show and having such a strong line-up of world-class competitors each year really reflects the Show’s growth and importance”

The wheels weren’t made for that sort of work” C ompetitive four-in-hand carriage driving was fledgling discipline, just finding feet, when Royal Windsor hosted its first international driving trial 1972. forerunner for the sport had emerged in Germany and was Aachen that the Duke Edinburgh first witnessed display of four-in-hand obstacle driving 1968. At the time, the Duke was president of the FEI and what he saw inspired him draft Heaton Hall Cheshire and Lowther, Cumbria. Under the Duke’s patronage, Royal Windsor was also pioneer, hosting the country’s first international competition. “It was always very prestigious event. The Queen used host party the castle on the Sunday night for competitors and owners,” remembers George Bowman (pictured below left, left), who remains one the most successful four-in-hand drivers all time. “International drivers would give their right hand for an invite Windsor. “It gained support very quickly from foreign competitors, who were more than happy travel here. For many years was the main event the driving calendar.” George, who still competing his team the age 85, has topped the winners’ podium Royal Windsor ten times, including for five-year run between 1992 and 1996. Windsor was home to several early British triumphs and George competed and won, his first Royal Windsor 1974, the same year secured individual Bronze and team Gold the World Championships Frauenfeld, Switzerland. He regained the Royal Windsor title 1980, year which Windsor also hosted the four-in-hand World Championships. There, George won individual Silver and team Gold, alongside team-mates Alwyn Holder and Prince Philip (main picture left). The sport the early days George’s victories would be almost unrecognisable modern audience. Before today’s marathon carriages with delayed steering and aluminium wheels, competitors used vintage, wooden-wheeled vehicles that often struggled over cross-country terrain. Philip Bateman, an FEI delegate here since 1985, recalls: “Back then, two three wheels didn’t come off, wasn’t proper event.” “To complete marathon was an achievement,” George explains. “The wheels weren’t made for that sort work, lot old carriages had stood for many years and then been brought back out compete many them were smashed pieces.” the sport has evolved, there have been numerous format changes, including memorable era when referees would sit next the driver during the marathon, what was fondly known the ‘suicide seat’. “We had referee come off in the water Royal Windsor one year and do an extremely good job trying drown himself,” Philip Bateman recalls. “It was before hard hats became compulsory and told him he really should wear one but he didn’t. When came through the water, his driver hit post which fell on the referee’s head and he needed 24 stitches. There was nothing the rules about having pick the referee up you dropped him the water, the driver just kept going.” The practice was eventually halted after the FEI deemed too dangerous but George Bowman recalls “glorious” time. “Prince Philip’s cousin Prince Michael and Prince George of Hanover were all referees,” he says. “Prince George Hanover turned over twice and The Queen forbade him from going again unless went with George Bowman. This was arranged, only turned over with him on as well. They nicknamed me Roll Over George after that!” Another significant change over the years has been the reduction the marathon route from five stages to one. The marathon used to incorporate the Great Park, but now concentrated into Home Park. While some drivers miss the elongated route – including George, who says he “would happily walk from my home Penrith Windsor just drive round the park” others, such as Australian Boyd Exell, found posed some challenges. “We used have walk section along the Long Walk and there were people playing football and children’s buggies, so could be hard get four horses to concentrate,” he says. In the modern era, five-time world champion Boyd has been the dominant force at Royal Windsor, winning the horse teams here on occasions, despite strong rivalry from the Dutch. Over the years, singles and pairs classes have been added and removed from the schedule, Celebrating 50 years of International Driving Thanks to The late Duke of Edinburgh, Windsor helped develop driving trials and it’s still one of the world’s leading places for carriage drivers to compete SARAH RADFORD the rules for new driving discipline, based the format of the three-day event. The new sport was embraced by an enthusiastic body drivers, who took part the first international driving trial in 1970. The first European Championships were held Hungary 1971, while the first World Championships Munster, Germany, followed in 1972. That same year, the new discipline gathered pace here, with the first national driving trials The ‘suicide seat’: Early days the competition practice that was eventually deemed too dangerous Windsor Horse Show’s equestrian competitions extend into the Great Park, where riders and their steeds have their skills and stamina tested in Endurance Riding The stunning Windsor Great Park provides the backdrop for Royal Windsor Endurance, which comprises four long-distance rides that take place over 160km, 120km, and senior and junior ride both 100km on Friday 13th May.
