A LONG AND DISTINGUISHED History

Returning to ExCeL London once more, the inaugural International Horse Show took place in June 1907, attracting visitors to Olympia Way to enjoy the spectacle of horses from all over Europe competing.

That first Show brought together Royals and some of the most wealthy and aristocratic sporting patrons alongside the general public with a desire to see a Show that rivalled events in New York, Paris and Brussels.

The Show returned to Olympia in 1972 when it was relaunched by BBC Commentator Raymond Brooks-Ward, and since then has become a highlight of the equestrian calendar. In 2022 the Show moved to London’s ExCeL where it has successfully found a home for the past two years. In 2023 the extra space offered by the purpose-built exhibition centre means that a new second arena will be introduced that will offer increased competition for Showing and Dog Agility as well as a programme of Masterclasses.

The International Arena will offer its celebrated packed programme of first-class equestrian competitions and international displays – the Show also plays host to the UK’s only qualifiers for three FEI World CupsTM in Dressage, Indoor Driving and Jumping.

As well as the extraordinary international horse displays, The Kennel Club hosts agility competitions for some very talented dogs. With over 220 exhibitors, there are also some fabulous shopping opportunities. The whole event draws to a close with a celebration including dancers, music and Father Christmas.

FACING THE BIG RED WALL The take-o rules change bit when when it’s trying to clear 7ft. The last and the best horses get closer to the bottom of the fence and climb out You look for horse with power that brave and is prepared to touch the wall without frightening itself.
How do top showjumpers arrive at the right spot to clear an oxer that’s over 5ft tall? It’s about training, planning and knowing your horse, as William Funnell explains IT LOOKS SO EASY –WALKING YOUR DISTANCES When first walked Grand Prix courses years ago, or six of the horse’s strides together. You wouldn’t to help balance the horse for the next line of fences back then. But that’s where the sport has changed. to do that – you have to be able to balance a horse as it’s going forward, or you’ll get time penalties. Increasingly, we might walk nine, ten or eleven strides on a course you can’t a ord to put extra strides in. All this means you have to be more skilful and your flatwork has to be better. But when you watch top riders, you don’t see they make look so easy. CLEARING THOSE RAILS – it’s not very tidy with its front end, for example. bigger the fence, the bigger the arc horse needs to make over it to clear it, so you stand further as they go up. But some horses try harder for you you dare them to jump from slightly further the fence. John Whitaker is rider who’s genius at varying his distance to try to make the horse try and fight for him. THE TAKE-OFF POINT There are so many di erent factors involved in deciding where you should take a lot about being in the right balance and the right take-o spot, and the best riders are super accurate. It’s why we spend so long schooling horses they have to be prepared to come back to you [contracting their stride] or lengthen without any tension, still in rhythm, staying between your hand and leg. Super-exceptional horses like Ben Maher’s Explosion, or Scott Brash’s Hello Sanctos [both of which have won Olympic Gold medals], will still jump clear with little variation in take-o point they’ve got a great canter and balance and really want to clear those rails for you. But you can’t ord to be out by more than 6cm from your
