RICHARD HAMMOND t

We chatted to Richard Hammond, who will be appearing at The Smallest Cog Restoration Garage and the StarFest stage

MOTORING RICHARD HAMMOND

What’s your favourite road trip you’ve taken as part of The Grand Tour?

I’ve loved each of the trips we’ve made. We get to go on adventures with our mates and show off in cars. Sometimes it’s tough; I’ve slept in minus-50 on the Arctic ice, in a tent full of cockroaches in a rainforest, on desert oors and landing craft. But even when it’s tough, we know we’re getting to do something special and that it will bring some of that adventure to people’s living rooms, and it’s always worth it.

What’s the best car you’ve ever driven?

I’m asked that at every dinner table I sit at and in every lift I ever travel in. Sometimes I throw in a daft answer: the Fiat Bravo, say. But really, it depends so much on what you’re doing and what you want of a car. The right car, doing the job it was designed to do, should feel like a thoroughbred. A Land Rover 90 battling a muddy forest track, a Bentley Continental blasting an autoroute, or a Subaru Impreza 22B attacking a rally stage: each is the best car in a given moment.

What inspired you to start The Smallest Cog?

I’ve spent nearly 30 years commenting on other people’s work in the car industry. I wanted to be part of the industry rather than

a commentator. My grandfather was a coach builder at Mulliners in Birmingham. I inherited none of his skill, but I love harnessing those skills in others and using them to preserve and protect a customer’s precious car. And let’s not forget, this is – or should be – the age of make do and mend; why use up resources making something new when something whose carbon footprint is in the past can be preserved and made to run on for many more years? When renewably brewed synthetic e-fuels become commercially available at scale, there’ll be an argument for keeping classics going as part of the global car eet alongside amazing new electric and hydrogen-powered cars.

Is there a classic car not in production that you’d like to see brought back?

I miss some of the great hot hatches of the late 80s. And I’m a huge fan of 60s Jaguars, but I don’t know that I’d want them to be brought back into production. There are lots of classics still with us. They’re time machines, beautiful portals back to a different age.

You’ve written several books over the years – do you have plans to write more?

I’m about to start working on something but can’t give anything away yet. I’m still laying it out and planning it, so watch this space.

RICK ASTLEY

We caught up with music superstar Rick Astley to nd out more about his new album and whether he’s got any surprises lined up for this year’s CarFest...

Do you have a favourite track on your new album?

Dippin’ My Feet, because it’s just been great to play it live and see the reaction. It’s always nice to sing a new song in front of an audience.

At CarFest 2021 you performed with Rob Brydon and Ruth Jones as Bryn and Nessa from Gavin and Stacey; do you have any surprises lined up this year?

It’s CarFest – there are always surprises. Chris Evans is involved. What more do I need to say?!

What’s your favourite song at the moment?

I’ve been listening to the new Foo Fighters album quite a lot. They’ve made a new album and are out playing it live, including at Glastonbury.

Which artists inspire you?

I think all artists inspire me, but I got to see

Texas at Glastonbury. Seeing Sharleen Spiteri handle that audience actually gave me some tips on how to do it - I got to see her from the side of the stage, and I was literally taking notes. I’ve got to know Sharleen now and to see her in front of an audience that big was amazing.

You have a lot of tour dates this year; do you still get the same satisfaction performing live now as you did at the start of your career?

I get more satisfaction now, because I’m more comfortable doing it. And I also think that I’ve found a place in my life where I can enjoy the old songs as well as the new ones. And it’s a nice balance. It’s kind of a perfect position where I’ve got old songs that your grandma might know but there’s kids in the front row that know one of them as well, and lots of people in between. So I like it more these days. I love it way more than I did. I’m very lucky.

SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR

Regular CarFest favourite and singer/ songwriter Sophie rose to fame as a solo artist in the 2000s with a string of hits including Murder on the Dance oor She’s released seven albums over the course of her career – the most recent, Hana, came out in June this year.

ROB BRYDON

Actor and comedian Rob Brydon is well-known for presenting Would I Lie to You? as well as appearing as Bryn in Gavin & Stacey. He blew us away with his Elvis-inspired performance last year – we can’t wait to see what he pulls out of the bag this year!

He’s released 21 studio albums, so CarFest attendees can be sure Tony has plenty of hits for them to enjoy!

carfest.org 29

tPETER ANDRE

We chatted to the singer and TV star about his busy schedule and future plans

What’s the best advice you’ve been given during your career?

To listen. Take advice, don’t think you know everything, and just listen. I haven’t always done it and I’ve made mistakes along the way. I wish I had listened more. And also to always stay humble. If you go off track, like many people do, like I’ve been at times, you come back and you realise how lucky you are to have a career at all, because it can come and go just like that.

What inspired you to follow a career in music?

We moved to Australia when I was six and we were picked on a lot because we were Greek. I don’t even know if there were any other ethnic families in our town – there certainly wasn’t in my school. We were picked on a lot and bullied, and I became very insular. I remember the radio stations were just playing rock music all the time. And then one day, in 1979, I heard a new song by Michael Jackson called Rock With You. It was the rst solo record from him that I’d ever heard and I was just mesmerised, because it was so different to anything else. I got his album Off The Wall – I saved my money, bought it and listened to it constantly. And I started seeing video clips on TV of the Jacksons performing. That introduced me to artistes like

dancer Fred Astaire and singer Sammy Davis Jr. and all these other artistes, and I just wanted to do that from a very, very early age. And even though I studied acting, it was music that was really making me want to move forward.

After your appearance on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here, would you ever do any other reality show?

I did Cooking With The Stars earlier this summer, but I’ve said after this year I don’t want to be a contestant anymore, I want to be the host. I host Miss World every year, which I present live to two billion people. I do a lot of presenting and I think that hosting is the aim for next year, as opposed to being a contestant. But yes, I’ve loved all the reality shows I’ve been on. The only one I didn’t ever want to do was Big Brother, which I didn’t do. But that’s not because it wasn’t a good show. It’s just I didn’t think I could add anything to it.

Do you still enjoy performing as much as you did at the start of your career?

I do, but in a different way. Now, performing is more relaxed. It’s not about doing it to prove a point, it’s not about doing it to try to be top of the charts. It’s about, you know, feeling quite lucky that you’re still going! That’s one thing. And also, the fact that when I perform now the

crowd sings along to the songs and it’s just a really relaxed vibe. But it does make me want to release new music so that I can get back to touring.

What do you have planned for the rest of the year?

I’ve just released my book, It’s Fine, which is a lifestyle book, with nutritional therapist Ben Smith. Everything’s been amazing. I’ve done my rst feature lm, which is still in edit and we’re hoping will be released worldwide later this year. And I’ve done a couple of short lms that are winning awards at festivals in America and Canada at the moment. So I’m very, very happy. I’m going to Australia to perform for the rst time in 20 years in my hometown, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast. I’m doing that partly because it’s an excuse to go and spend time with my mum and dad. And I’ll be doing my rst Australian TV interviews in many, many years. I’m also going back to Grease in the West End. I’m doing four weeks there as Teen Angel and Vince Fontaine. So, lots going on!

PRESENTED

EDDIE IZZARD t

We spoke to Eddie Izzard about getting starstruck, cars and music. Eddie is appearing on the StarFest Stage on Friday and Saturday

STARFEST EDDIE IZZARD
34 carfest.org

What or who inspired you to follow a career in comedy and theatre? I was inspired to become an actor after seeing the play The Boy With A Cart by Christopher Fry in January 1970. I was eight years old and as one actor on stage was getting a great response from the audience, I decided there and then to become an actor.

What’s at the top of your playlist? Life On Mars? by David Bowie. I really love Rick Wakeman’s piano on the track. Apparently, David asked him to be in the band but Rick wanted to go and be in his own band. The lyrics are bonkers but, as David Bowie himself said, it’s the piano that makes the track soar.

Have you ever been starstruck? Yes – when I rst met Peter O’Toole. He and I were part of a bene t for

the fabulous Roy Kinnear. I walked up to him and said “I love your work”, and he asked me to stay and chat. It was a wonderful moment.

What do you have planned for the rest of the year?

Touring, politics and then Hamlet in New York in January 2024.

What car do you drive at the moment and what’s your dream car?

A 1958 VW Beetle, and I think it is my dream car. My dad drove a VW Beetle for 13 years, so my brother and I grew up travelling around in VW Beetles. To own the car I grew up in is a wonderful thing. We toured most of the UK and all of Ireland in that car. All the adventures we went on were seen through the windscreen of a cream 1960s Beetle and it has always stayed with me.

ADELE PARKS t

We chatted to the popular author about her books and inspiration

STARFEST ADELE PARKS

What inspires you?

The quick answer is life. I write to sort through my understanding of this big beautiful, complex, compelling mystery we all share – life! I think both reading and writing are all about making connections with people, checking in and seeing if other people think and feel similarly to each other. I love it when people get in touch with me to say they relate to something I’ve written – that it’s made them laugh or re ect, or that it’s moved them in some way and they felt fearful, excited, joyful, heard – whatever. So therefore, I guess I’m inspired by the thought of reaching people and entertaining them.

What process do you go through when you start writing a book?

I am quite a keen plotter. I think about plots for a long time before I commit words to a page. Sometimes years, certainly at least months. I often am chewing over more than one plot at a time. Once I think I’ve got the plot sorted and pinned in my mind, I draw a spidergram on an A4 piece of paper – yup, I’m talking about those crazy mind-maps that teachers encourage primary school children to develop; they appeal to me. I’ll map out the main interactions between characters on that map and I’ll note big plot twists. I always know how my books are going to end before I start.

Have you ever based any characters on people you know?

I have not, which is a relief when you think about the subject matter of my past few books: high-end sex workers (One Last Secret), kidnaps (Just My Luck), missing people (Both of You) bigamy (Just Between Us) and affairs (everything I’ve written). I think my friends are all too lovely, pleasant and law abiding to provide twisty enough plots for my psychological thrillers. At least that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

What’s next for you?

I have a new novel that’s just come out called Just Between Us. It is about a female bigamist who goes missing and both her husbands are suspects. It’s part mystery, as we want to know what happened to her and who is responsible for her disappearance, but it’s also a close look at family and the fact that love can often be just a shiver away from hate. This novel examines what people do in the name of love.

What career would you have followed if you hadn’t become an author?

I wanted to be an author from a very young age, maybe six or seven years old. I did work in advertising for a decade before I was published and I suppose if I hadn’t ever got published, I would have continued along that career path as it is a fun industry to work in. However, I can’t really imagine a scenario where I’d have given up on my dream to be a novelist.

THE HAPPY PEAR t

You started The Happy Pear in 2004 with a shop. How has the brand grown since then? So, it started with a small fruit and veg shop and a dream of creating a healthier world and community. Now we have a sourdough bakery, cafe, shop and two farms. We have a full range of products – 80, including non-alcoholic beers – in almost 1,000 stores in Ireland and we’re hoping to launch them in the UK this year. We have six international bestselling cookbooks. We have an app and courses where we partner with medical professionals for the simple thing of helping people improve their health via diet and eating more plant-based food. So it’s grown in loads of different ways, and we love it!

Why do you think people should eat more plant-based food?

We had changed our diet to eat more plant-based food and we felt it was the healthiest for us and healthiest for the planet. Research from University of Oxford in 2018 found that the single biggest thing you could do for the climate was to eat more plant-based foods or to eat a vegan diet. For the longest-living people in the world, typically

95-100 per cent of their diet is made up of whole plant foods. So it’s not necessarily about being vegan or vegetarian but moving the dial to eat more whole plant foods.

Do you have a favourite plant-based dish?

It depends on the day – right now, my wife is making this simple red lentil dahl with sourdough bread from our cafe and some steamed greens and that’s probably my favourite simple dish. It’s comforting and all the family love it.

What dish would you recommend to someone new to plant-based food?

We have a YouTube channel where there’s a simple chickpea curry that has been viewed over two million times. It works really well, takes ve minutes to make and it’s delicious.

What are you looking forward to showing people at CarFest?

Inspiring people to eat more veg can be fun, it can be good laugh and super-tasty, and it doesn’t cost much. It’s actually a cheaper way to eat and it’s extremely delicious.

What’s your favourite barbecue dish?

It’s a tough question, but I think it would have to be butter ied lamb leg, cooked hot and fast, direct over coals, so the fat goes crispy but it’s pink in the middle, with wild-garlic chimi, grilled asparagus, skillet-pan spuds and smoked-tomato salsa.

What’s your favourite side dish to go with barbecue food?

When it’s in season, grilled corn on the cob, and I like to serve it as they do in Mexico. Known as Elotes there, it’s chargrilled corn on the cob with mayonnaise, Cot a cheese – you can sub with Parmesan – coriander, chilli salt, sesame and lime. It’s so good!

What inspired you to start cooking?

Well, I like to eat! My old man is a decent cook and showed me the basics as a kid. Then I just started to cook more and more for myself when he was working late and went down a rabbit hole. It became an obsession and it’s still my number one passion. I absolutely love it!

Do you have any top tips for barbecuing?

Buy a grill with a lid and vents at the top and bottom. This will allow you to use it as an oven, a smoker and a grill, and basically makes the possibilities almost endless. Also, get yourself a temperature probe, because every time you cook over re, the timings will be different, as things such as the amount of fuel you’re using, the wind and air temperature will be variable. By cooking your food to a certain temperature, you will not only receive perfect results every time, you will also avoid making anyone sick.

What do you enjoy most about teaching people your techniques?

I just love it when you show someone a few basic tips, such as using a lid and a probe, heat zones etc, and it suddenly clicks. Immediately, they are going to become a much better re cook, and con dence is elevated. I love nothing more than when people send me pictures of their cooks after they have learnt something from me. It really is the best part of what I do.

Alt-pop singer/songwriter Max White was born on the Isle of Wight, lived in Panama and is now based in Brighton. He was inspired by the prevalence of dance music in Panama to pursue the genre himself. IN MEMORY OF ILA SCHECKTER, WHO DIED IN 2019, AGED 21

We are very happy to welcome Young Epilepsy this year to the family of CarFest charities. Shortly before her tragic and unexpected death, Ila was thrilled to become a Young Ambassador for this charity. She was determined to spread awareness of epilepsy and seizure support. Ila’s friends have designed a range of T-shirts in her memory that re ect her “tumour-humour”, sense of fun and naughtiness – but also to convey potentially life-saving skills. Losing control during a seizure is terrifying – simple things like cushioning the person’s head, putting them in the recovery position and being supportive helps the person feels less unsafe. The T-shirts are available to buy at the Young Epilepsy stand and 100% of the sale price will go to Young Epilepsy.

ALLY BOOTHROYD t

Take advice from the expert who uses and teaches Yoga Nidra, which is a form of yoga that aims to achieve deep relaxation. Ally will be on site in SpaFest throughout the weekend, so be sure to come, chat and get some personal tips and advice from the expert...

78 carfest.org

Why do you think Yoga Nidra is so important for mental health?

First, it can be extremely effective for reducing stress and anxiety. There are also studies that have shown a Yoga Nidra practice gives our bodies a natural boost of melatonin helping aid deeper sleep. There are many short term bene ts, including replenishing dopamine levels and reducing cortisol levels. There are many positive effects that Yoga Nidra has on mental health!

Do you need to practise Yoga Nidra every day to see bene ts?

No, there are short-term bene ts that one can feel after just one practice. As with all things, if you take up a regular practice and bring this into your routine, the bene ts will compound over time. People often feel the positive effects in their body and on their mind after each practice, and I like to say “states become traits” so when you are calming your nervous system and creating states of inner calm regularly, that starts to ripple into your everyday life and the way you respond to the world around you.

How does Yoga Nidra differ from meditation?

Yoga Nidra and meditation are both states of mind, but they have some differences. In meditation, you’re alert and focused, while in Yoga Nidra, your mind is very relaxed, almost like when you’re in deep sleep. Sometimes people who struggle with meditation nd success with Yoga Nidra because it strengthens similar brain pathways. After practising Yoga Nidra for a while, they may nd it easier to transition into meditation.

What tips do you have for someone looking to get started with Yoga Nidra?

I have a YouTube channel with over a hundred free practices, but there are many other free resources online. You can get started with 10-20 minutes a day (or every other day) and build from there. I would say that looking for a Yoga Nidra guide/teacher that resonates with you is most important to get started and stay consistent with the practice.

Is Yoga Nidra suitable for the whole family?

Yes! Depending on the age of any children, you might like to nd age appropriate guidance. I have an eight-year-old daughter who loves to practise Yoga Nidra before bed, she says that it relaxes her for sleep, connects her to her “heart’s wish” and gives her nice dreams.

tBASIL BRUSH

We caught up with the famous fox ahead of his CarFest appearance

Who or what inspired you to get into showbiz?

People say I was born on stage – the audience liked it so much, my mother kept it in the act!

I simply remember folk laughing at my terrible jokes, and being on stage is so exciting, I realised that if I did this as a job, I wouldn’t do a day’s work in my life! My character was based on Terry Thomas, so I could be naughty but nice.

What’s your favourite moment of your career?

I have had many favourite moments. Meeting Princess Diana was a highlight, as well as doing a birthday party at Kensington Palace for William and Harry. I enjoyed being at the front of a pageant bus last year for the Queen’s Jubilee.

What’s your favourite joke?

I just love playing on words and recycling old jokes to save the planet. ‘What do you call a deer with no eyes? No idea? I’ll tell you later.’

Are you looking forward to CarFest this year?

I have never attended CarFest before, but to perform for a number of cars will be great.

I have a Rolls Canardly – I roll down the hills and can hardly roll up the other side! I love festivals.

What advice would you give to your 16-year-old self?

If I met my 16-year-old self, I would say, “Don’t worry, you’ll be ne, but be careful at Butlin’s – you’ll be chased by men in red coats! Just reinvent yourself every few years with a refurb – you’ll look younger by the minute. And remember – anyone who thinks you’ve had a facelift is talking out of their Botox! Boom! Boom!”

MEET LUKE

Luke became very poorly with meningitis and septicaemia in 2019. He spent months in hospital after quadruple limb amputations. Back at home, Luke began to come to terms with the huge changes in his life. Luckily, support was available at a local charity called SELFA that offers disabled children a range of accessible activities after school and during holidays. These sessions helped Luke to build up his con dence, make friends and have fun, just like any other child. Now Luke is thriving and looking forward to a much brighter future.

ELLEN MACARTHUR CANCER TRUST

MEET TADIWA

WHO WE ARE

The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust inspires young people aged eight to 24 to believe in a brighter future living through and beyond cancer. For many, picking up where they left off before diagnosis isn’t possible. So when treatment ends, the Trust’s work begins. Through sailing and outdoor activity, young people have improved mental well-being, a sense of self-worth, independence and optimism for the future.

Nine-year-old Tadiwa, who lives in Hounslow, was diagnosed with a brain tumour as a baby. His rst sailing adventure with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust last summer made him feel ‘free and happy’, like he was in his own bubble away from the worries of his illness.

READY, SET, RACE!

Visit the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust stand and challenge the team to the ultimate gutter boat race - select (or build) your vessel, choose your power source, and race around a model of the Isle of Wight. Or play one of the games brought to you by Asmodee UK – Dobble, Cobra Paw, Egg Slam and more. Who will be victorious?

MEET YASMIN

12-year-old Yasmin from Oxfordshire was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, in her thigh when she was nine. It was incredibly di cult for her to deal with the isolation of going through treatment during the pandemic. Yasmin and her family were delighted to discover the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust at CarFest in 2021. A year later Yasmin no longer felt like the ‘only one’ as she enjoyed a sailing adventure with others literally in the same boat.

CARFEST SUPPORT

Your support makes a huge difference. Since 2019, CarFest has raised enough money to fund sailing adventures for 900 young people.

MEET ISABELLE, MAX & JACK

Christina and Duncan are parents to four-year-old twins, Isabelle and Max, and six-year-old Jack, who have been supported by Rainbow Trust since October 2020.

Thanks to CarFest’s incredible fundraising, Rainbow Trust can provide support to families when they need it most. Since CarFest started supporting the charity, it has raised enough for Rainbow Trust to provide an entire year of support to over 312 families with a seriously ill child.

Born prematurely at 24 weeks, Isabelle has Subglottic Stenosis, requiring her to have a tracheostomy to help her breathe, and now requires 24-hour care. Rainbow Trust Family Support Worker Sammii provides practical and emotional support. Sammii spends time with Christina, listening to her worries and taking the kids on days out, as well as entertaining them at home, to give Christina some time for herself and some respite, knowing the kids are being looked after.

STARLIGHT

WHO WE ARE

Starlight is the UK’s leading charity for children’s play in hospitals and hospices. Evidence shows that play has the power to reduce fear, pain and trauma during treatment and recovery from illness – boosting mental and physical health and resilience. We work to ensure every child has the opportunity, space and time to experience play. We also undertake research and campaign to ensure a child’s right to play is protected and provided for.

TIME TO PLAY…

The whole family can enjoy games and activities at the Starlight stand. Play is so important for mental health and well-being, so why not pop along and join the fun.

CARFEST SUPPORT

The money that CarFest raises will help to protect play for seriously ill children.

MEET KITTY

Kitty is an incredible young girl who’s de ed the odds with her rare and life-threatening condition. At six years old, she was diagnosed with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, in which the immune system attacks the kidneys.

Kitty’s father sel essly donated his kidney, but the disease returned just three days after the transplant. Kitty was ghting for her life. Thankfully, she began a new treatment, and after just 13 weeks, was in remission. Throughout her ordeal, Starlight was able to help ease Kitty and her parents’ anxiety and distress through the play resources they provided.

Today, Kitty is a happy and healthy young girl. Her journey has been one of strength, resilience and determination. While she may need another kidney in the future, Kitty and her family continue to live in the present, cherishing every moment.

TEENAGE CANCER TRUST

WHO WE ARE

Every day, seven young people aged 13-24 hear the words “you have cancer”. Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity dedicated to providing the specialised nursing care and support they need to get through it. Cancer doesn’t just devastate a young person’s health. It threatens to take away everything they care about – their identity, their independence, and their dreams. We fund specialist nurses, youth support teams and hospital units within the NHS to provide the very best care and support during treatment and beyond, making sure cancer doesn’t stop young people living their lives.

CELEBRATING MUSIC AND ART

MEET CHLOE

Chloe was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in July 2020, aged 16, and was helped by Teenage Cancer Trust at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. She had chemotherapy, receiving support from clinical nurse specialist Rosie.

CARFEST SUPPORT

Since 2019, CarFest has raised over £600,000 to support young people with cancer. That’s enough to fund all over our Lead Nurses for an entire year. Isn’t that incredible?

www.teenagecancertrust.org

Head to our stall where we’ll be selling some of our new music merchandise products, including limited edition prints by the incredible Pete McKee, unique signed set-lists, T-shirts, bucket hats, and Babygros. Home delivery is available!

Going through cancer was a life-changing experience for Chloe, who developed a passion for singing and playing guitar while being treated: “My cancer diagnosis showed me the value of life and showed me that I had to make the most of every opportunity. I had been nervous about sharing my music but now I thought: ‘If I don’t do it now, I might not get another opportunity.’”

Chloe is performing with her band Pearll on the WigWam stage on Saturday afternoon.

MEET OLIVIA

Eleven-year-old Olivia was diagnosed in 2021 with focal epilepsy and now lives with absence seizures. Having received fantastic medical care from the paediatric neurology department, she was left struggling with the emotional side of her diagnosis and what it meant for her and her family.

Having reached out to Young Epilepsy, the family were supported by youth coordinator Stephen, who was on hand to offer information, advice and support, which can be crucial in helping young people make sense of their diagnosis.

Olivia and her mum were also able to meet other young people and parents at specialist in-person and online events. Sharing experiences and building connections with other young people living with epilepsy can lead to a positive impact on a child’s well-being, as well as providing support and comfort for parents in the same position.

Neil, Ivy’s father, is an ambassador for the charity, which saved his life and prevented Ivy from losing her beloved daddy, and Carla from losing her husband. Neil battled depression and an anxiety disorder his entire life and had a deep hatred towards himself. However, his life was transformed by My Black Dog, helping him nd a new perspective and purpose. Today he is proud of the person he has become and has chosen to use his experiences to support others as a peer-to-peer volunteer at My Black Dog.
