THREE-DAY EVENTING EXPLAINED
The three-day event is a comprehensive test of all-round ability of horse and rider. It was originally a military event, drawing on the requirements for a top-class officer’s charger: steadiness on parade; the ability to cross the countryside fast in battle; and to be fit and tough enough to continue with duties after a strenuous day
The marks throughout the tests are cumulative and elimination in any one test brings elimination from the whole competition. The horse and rider with the lowest number penalties at the end the event is the winner.
DRESSAGE TEST
iding a fit five star horse full of energy, is no walk in the park when calmness and precision are required udges are loo ing for an ‘uphill’ outline and lively impulsion, with freedom and regularity in all three pa es hile judging dressage is to a degree subjective, certainly the basics of what an experienced judge at this level is looking for should not be in question a h ove ent see page is ar ed out of and these movements are displayed on an electronic scoreboard in the corner of the Main Arena, so spectators can see how the judges are assessing the test The ar s may vary, as the judges are in different places around the arena to see different vie s of the test At the end of the test, their marks are averaged and shown as a percentage, which is converted into penalty points for the test

WHAT MAKES A BURGHLEY HORSE?
It takes a special kind of horse to cope with Burghley’s demands.
Stephanie Bateman discovers what attributes are required
With its undulating terrain and world-class track, only a small subset of horses has what it takes to complete the most challenging horse trials in the world.
Since 2016, only nine horses have finished the ross ountry at Defender Burghley without time penalties, and the highest number of Burghley top 10 places by one horse is just four. Only two horses have won Burghley more than once: Avebury won a staggering three times (2012, 2013, 2014), while Priceless won twice (1983, 1985). And of the 60 previous
winners, there have only been three mares to win at Burghley: Maid Marion (1973), Headley Britannia (2006 ) and reigning Burghley winner Vanir Kamira, aka Tilly, (2022). “Burghley horses need stamina, speed and bravery,” says Tilly’s rider, Piggy March, who will retire Trevor Dickens’ legendary mare at this year’s event.
At 17, Tilly is also one of the oldest horses ever to win Burghley, alongside Caroline Powell’s Lenamore, who won in 2010.
“Tilly is a straightforward crosscountry horse in that she is brave
and economical she doesn’t waste any time in the air. If there are u ps and ags in her ay she’ll do what she can to get over. The only thing I have to work on at Burghley is keeping her balanced.”
Piggy explains that heart and blood are also vital ingredients in a Burghley horse. “Burghley is more suited to a blood-type galloper that is rideable and has the will.
Tilly has een a stand out five star horse, but what made her a Burghley horse was that she had the heart to dig deep every time but finish happy and full of running
A SPECIAL LITTLE HORSE
The grey gelding Lenamore (right), owned by Lexi Jackson, was another who loved Burghley.
e o pleted five ti es and won in 2010.
“A Burghley horse needs to be tough, honest and sound,” muses his rider Caroline Powell. “Lenamore was one of the soundest horses in the world. He never saw a vet until he was 19, apart from vaccinations.”
His owner’s mother, Janie Mackinnon, did all his slow work at the start of each season. “She was always very methodical, so he always had the best starts,” says Caroline. “He would jog the whole way round a two-hour hack, so he used to keep himself very fit e as a very tough horse and was slightly arrogant, which worked in his favour. Because he was quite compact, he never over-jumped and wasted energy.
“He wasn’t a blood horse, just a fit and agile hara ter that never
seemed to run out of puff it was quite hard to bottom him. He was just a special little horse.”
Lucinda Fredericks’ mighty little mare Headley Britannia (below), winner in 2006, still holds the best finishing s ore at Burghley of t ust hh Brit ertainly held her own on the hallowed Burghley turf. “She was a pony really, but if
you have self-belief, belief in your horse, and your horse believes in you, anything is possible,” says Lucinda. “Burghley’s terrain is very much suited to your galloper and determined horse. It’s power jumping and a massive test.”
Lucinda admits that she would ride Brit differently to other horses at Burghley. “Brit didn’t have a lot of power, and to get the range and reach over the fences, I had to go forward, fast and deep,” she explains. “Brit was short and stocky but we had such an amazing partnership. I knew her limitations and rode the track accordingly.
“I thank her every day for what she did for me. Mares have more self-preservation, but when you get a good one, they give you everything.”

YOU KNOW YOU’RE AT BURGHLEY NOW...
The Leaf Pit and Cottesmore Leap are two of Defender Burghley’s most iconic fences. Course designer Derek di Grazia and European bronze medallist Sarah Bullimore explain why they stand out, and how to master them
DROP IS 2M
DDG: Horses should be full of running as this comes early on the course, and the uphill climb before it will help bring them back for this fence.
SB: The Leaf Pit is quite a surprise for horses, because we rarely meet fences like this and we can’t really train for it. Horses are used to drops ut s aller ones ou definitely don t ant to e too quick in the approach.
Riders must prepare early so you can bring the horse back and soften the hands so he takes a look with their leg ready to say, ‘Yes, we ARE going.’ You don’t want to be pulling at the top ith the horse s head in the air and you don t ant to y off it. couple of trot strides at the top is ideal.
DDG: The drop do n is signifi ant assu ing the horse jumps it the way it’s intended and this fence always has the riders thinking.
It requires a brave horse, but once down, then the ensuing jumps become the other part of the question. Various undulations in the ground here allow the fences to be set in ways that can be quite in uential in ho they are u ped
THE COTTESMORE LEAP
BRUSH IS 1M 45
WIDTH IS 3M
SB: This is the exact opposite of the Leaf Pit. You’re just thinking, ‘Hindlegs under me, engine going,’ on the approach you need momentum. You just want to get a good shot at it and jump it out of a rhythm, with the horse’s eyes up. Get it even half a stride wrong and you make it even bigger, and that’s when the horse might chip a stride in or say, ‘No, sorry, too big.’ But done well, it’s fantastic, a great fence to jump, and a good feeling to know you have it behind you!
DDG: You do not need to look at this one too long, as it is just big and wide.

The Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) expects all those involved in international equestrian sport to adhere to the FEI’s Code of Conduct and to acknowledge and accept that at all times the welfare of the horse must be paramount and must never be subordinated to competitive or commercial influences. At all stages during the preparation and training of competition horses, welfare must take precedence over all other demands. This encompasses medication use, surgical procedures that threaten welfare or safety, pregnancy in mares and the misuse of aids.
3. Events must not prejudice horse welfare. This involves paying careful attention to the competition areas, ground surfaces, weather conditions, stabling, site safety and fitness of the horse for onward travel after the event. DUBARRY BURGHLEY YOUNG EVENT HORSE
Judges: Dressage – Sue Baxter & Les Smith. Jumping – Nicola Wilson & Jane Holderness-Roddam. Suitability & Type – Jenny Hall. Potential to Gallop – Andrew Nicholson
The BYEH series encourages riders, trainers and breeders to produce potential world-class event horses that may one day gallop around Defender Burghley
METHOD OF JUDGING
The judges should bear in mind that they are looking for potential for the future. Unfortunately, all too often, the horse with the most potential may not be the one that is best presented. We are looking for an athletic, loosemoving horse with a promising jumping technique and attitude, which, with effective training, will develop physically and mentally into a world-class event horse. All horses have qualified fro one of 17 competitions held around the ountry this season The final comprises the following::
DRESSAGE
Unlike a normal dressage test, judges are not assessing the current state of training and marks are not given for individual movements. Judges will have to weigh up the in uen e of the rider a good rider
may present a well-balanced, smooth test from perhaps a moderate, unscopey horse, whereas a less skilled rider may not make a good horse’s attributes obvious. However, it is the horse and not the rider we are evaluating. The idea is to find horses ith three orre t scopey and regular gaits, while considering potential longevity and performance as a world-class event horse.
JUMPING
Judges are looking for a bold athletic horse with good technique. horse with these qualities should not necessarily be penalised for knocking down one fence (or a four-year-old having one refusal), providing they demonstrate they react positively afterwards. Especially in the early part of the season four year olds ay find it easier to jump some fences out of
trot. Notwithstanding the above, three cumulative refusals or a fall of horse or rider must result in elimination.
SUITABILITY AND TYPE
Assessed in hand. Judges are looking for horses with the potential to gallop with further maturity.
POTENTIAL TO GALLOP
Judges are looking for horses with the attributes to withstand the demands of the sport in terms of soundness, speed and stamina. Lack of quality and other defects that might indicate limited stamina or speed should be penalised, even though the horse may be a nice dressage or showjumping prospect. However, a lack of size should not be held against him/her. Gender should not affect the judgement.

Parade the Fitzwilliam Hounds at 3.30pm
After the conclusion of the showjumping, Burghley’s packed stands never fail to give a huge welcome to the wonderful hounds of the Fitzwilliam (Milton) Hunt as they parade, under the charge of huntsman Shaun Parish and whipper-in Jake Whalley. This year they are joined in the Main Arena by the huntsmen of five neigh ouring pa s a ones of the ottes ore a es Finney of the Belvoir, Aidan Beaney of the Quorn, Harry Beeby of the Fernie and Lewis Chutter of the Pytchley with Woodland. They will all have many local supporters round the ringside, so please give them and the hounds - the central focus for all who love hunting a huge cheer.
THE SEIB INSURANCE BROKERS RACEHORSE TO RIDING HORSE
This qualifier has been held in the Main Arena on the final day of the Defender Burghley Horse Trials since 2012. The class is tremendously popular with both competitors and spectators alike
This year, the Racehorse to Riding Horse competition welcomes the 1976 winner of Burghley Horse Trials, Jane HoldernessRoddam as conformation judge of the class, with David Ingle carrying out ride-judging duties.
The Defender Burghley qualifier provides the last opportunity of 2023 for two competitors to qualify for the SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse Championship at Horse of the Year Show (HOYS). The class is open to thoroughbreds that have raced on the Flat, in National Hunt races or in point-to-points. The SEIB series differs from other competitions for ex-racehorses as entrants need not have run in the UK.

INTERVIEWER:
Obviously, we know all about Joules, but tell us about your influences in the very early days.
TOM JOULE:
I grew up in rural Leicestershire, and I’m the son of a clothing retailer who had an appreciation of country attire and sportswear. My mother was in the theatre - acting, directing, and involved with wardrobe. She had a lovely way of putting outfits together and wasn’t scared of colour. My journey certainly started there.
I: What first brought Joules to Burghley?
TJ:
I started selling clothing and hats on the event circuit in 1989, and I had my first stand at Burghley in 1991. The customers I served had a wonderful outlook on life, they were so friendly and welcoming.
I:
When did you spot a gap in the market?
TJ:
Almost straight away. The country fraternity are a colourful bunch, but the clothing on offer to them was very uniform and a little too green. I started to give
practical products a twist, through colour, unexpected details and print – together with a focus on quality.
I: And that proved very successful…
TJ:
There was a real appetite for Joules. When foot and mouth struck in 2001 and all the country shows and events were cancelled, I had to sell to independent retailers – which was a great success. Off the back of that we opened several Joules stores and launched a website. However, the most discerning customers were always the eventing crowd. If it was loved by those turning up to shows and events, I knew it would work in our stores.
I:
Joules was going from strength to strength…
TJ:
We were growing organically into an authentic lifestyle brand with a huge following. In 2010, I brought in dedicated teams to grow each channel. Through a lot of hard work, we expanded the business, through sales here in the UK and internationally. In 2016 Joules was listed on the London Stock Exchange.
I: That must have been quite a time...
TJ:
2017 and 2018 saw further growth and Joules had sales of over £200m. But life rarely goes to plan. In 2019 our long-time CEO retired, and a new chairman and CEO joined Joules. It was decided to hand the creative and product responsibility to others, leading to my departure during Christmas of 2019. Then the pandemic hit, and I felt the brand lost its way.
I: What’s happened to Joules over the last couple of years has been well documented. But now you’re back.
TJ:
And loving it. I feel the brand is in a strong position, the teams have direction and new and future product is getting great feedback. Joules’ DNA is back with a new perspective. I’m so pleased that everyone at Burghley will be able to get an exclusive first look at our new A/W collection and join us as we begin to share the magic that makes Joules a brilliant brand.

HEALTH & SAFETY
HEALTH & SAFETY POLICY STATEMENT
The following statement sets out our year-round policy which is also applicable on Event and in accordance with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and other Regulations.
Burghley Horse Trials Ltd has in place a management structure that ensures that responsibility for health and safety is allocated and carried out at an appropriate level. Many of those responsible for health and safety in particular areas of the Event are volunteers, but this in no way lessens either their responsibility or Burghley Horse Trials’ support for them.
Burghley Horse Trials Ltd retains the services of ACT (National) Ltd to provide competent Health and Safety advice and support year round and to include the provision of a Safety Officer during the Event.
It is the policy of Burghley Horse Trials Ltd to conduct its operations in such a way as to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of any person employed in connection with the Event and all other persons who may be affected by its undertaking. In particular, the commitment shall extend to ensuring, so far as is reasonably practical:
1. the provision and maintenance of plant, machinery, equipment and systems of work that are safe and without risk to health
2. the provision and maintenance of arrangements for the handling, storage, transport, use and disposal of articles and substances that are safe and without risk to health
3. the provision of such information, instruction, training and supervision as is necessary to secure the health, safety and welfare of all persons working at or visiting the site
4. the working environment of all employees is without risk to health and adequate facilities and arrangements are made for welfare at work
5. effective communication channels are established and maintained throughout the organisation to promote all aspects of health, safety and welfare
6. compliance with all statutory requirements and, where appropriate, for there to be close liaison with the enforcing authorities
7. suitable and sufficient risk assessments are made and any risk control measures identified as necessary are implemented within a reasonable time scale and on a priority basis
8. a competent Safety Officer is appointed to advise throughout the year and is in attendance throughout the Event
9. the health and safety of visitors to the Event and its facilities
While Burghley Horse Trials Ltd acknowledges that managing health and safety risk is primarily its responsibility, the co-operation of all employees, contractors, sub-contractors and other external organisations connected with the Event is vital to the achievement of the policy objectives. Furthermore, individuals should take personal responsibility for their own safety and for the safety of those around them. Accordingly, it is the responsibility of all persons to promptly raise health and safety concerns and to report all accidents and incidents without delay.
The Event Director named in this programme has ultimate responsibility for the health & safety of those working at or attending the Event. An appropriate management structure and arrangements have been put in place to ensure that the objectives set out in the health & safety policy statement are achieved.
OFFICIALS
All officials, spectators, visitors, contractors, competitors and exhibitors are required to co-operate with the Organisers to help ensure that these objectives are achieved and to take reasonable care of themselves and others. Any person who has safety concerns or who becomes aware of a hazard should report this immediately to an official. Stewards and Officials are briefed to conduct themselves so as not to put themselves or others at risk and to maintain control of the area round their location. Risk assessments have been carried out and will form the basis of the briefing of the officials prior to and during the four days of the Event.
SPECTATORS/VISITORS
Spectators and visitors should ensure that they observe all safety signs and notices, and that they follow the instructions of the stewards and officials either in person or via the public address system. A map is contained in the programme showing the different parts of the event site, the routes around it, and the location of suitable viewing areas.
Spectators and visitors are advised that due to the uneven and in parts irregular terrain at this event, it may at times be difficult for spectators to
move around freely and easily, particularly for some people with impaired mobility.
SPECTATOR SAFETY
• A general risk assessment is carried out to identify hazards and the necessary controls
• Signs clearly direct spectators to all parts of the Event site and warn of hazards where appropriate
• Where reasonably practicable, fences and barriers are provided to segregate pedestrians from equine and vehicle areas. Places where horse routes cross pedestrian routes are staffed and during the cross country whistle blasts are used to alert all persons that a horse is approaching
• Spectators are responsible for taking appropriate care to ensure their own health and safety (e.g. by using designated pedestrian routes), and to ensure that children and other vulnerable persons (e.g. disabled, elderly) are supervised. It is a condition of entry that spectators are required to follow the instruction of Event staff, and to observe all signs and notices
• The Event site, including grandstands etc., is inspected each day and where necessary preventative and corrective actions taken to ensure safety standards are maintained
• Crowd conditions are monitored throughout the Event by the Safety Steward and other Officials
• Spectators are advised to wear sensible footwear (suitable for the ground and weather conditions) when attending the event
CONTRACTORS
Contractors and Sub Contractors must observe the requirements of the Event Health & Safety Policy published by and available from the Burghley Horse Trials Office.
EXHIBITORS
Exhibitors are responsible for the safety of their trade stands and the risks that they may pose to other persons working at or attending the event. All exhibitors are required to produce a risk assessment for their activities and the stands will be inspected by our Safety Officers during the course of the event.
INCIDENTS, ACCIDENTS AND EMERGENCIES
Even with comprehensive Health & Safety arrangements in place, it is possible that accidents and emergencies may occur during the event. Accidents involving horses and competitors are well catered for, and the officials will immediately summon the emergency services when required. Accidents not connected with the equestrian competition (e.g. involving members of the public) will be dealt with by the on-site services. If you sustain an injury or require medical treatment please contact an official without delay.
When necessary, additional emergency services may be summoned by the appropriate officials. A major incident plan is in place.
OFF ROAD VEHICLES
For the purposes of the Event, Burghley Park is a public place and drivers are therefore reminded that some vehicles (including off road vehicles) may be legally required to be registered, taxed, insured and where necessary to hold a current MOT certificate. All drivers are advised to check the status of their vehicle to ensure they are complying with all relevant legal requirements.
DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY
All badges, car park passes and hospitality packages are sold subject to the Organisers reserving the right to refuse admission to Burghley Park to any person, or to withdraw permission at any time to remain in the Park, and they shall not be required to give any reason for such action. Save for the death or personal injury caused by the negligence of the Organisers or anyone for whom they are in law responsible, neither the Organisers, Burghley Horse Trials Limited, British Eventing Limited, the Trustees of Burghley Estate, nor any agent, employee or representative of these bodies accepts any liability for any accident, loss, damage, injury or illness to horses, owners, riders, grooms, exhibitors, spectators, dogs, land, cars, their contents and accessories or any other person or property whatsoever, whether caused by their negligence, breach of contract or in any other way whatsoever. The Organisers shall not be liable in respect of any loss or damage whatsoever arising from the abandonment, cancellation or postponement of Defender Burghley Horse Trials, or any such eventuality.

COURSE-DESIGNER DEREK DI GRAZIA UNVEILS HIS SECOND DEFENDER BURGHLEY COURSE
Fence illustrations by Patrick Latham
The course starts out in the same direction as last year, but once past Capability’s Cutting it runs clockwise, taking o petitors over the yover and galloping up Winners’
Avenue. All the combinations have a different look, there are several new fences and many others that have been set in new locations. As always there is plenty of terrain, plenty of
galloping and plenty of questions. I hope horses and riders have a safe and successful competition, and enjoy the course ahead of a good day of showjumping on Sunday.
DEFENDER STARTER (1)
The ig log of this u p is the first of three designed to get competitors really jumping as they prepare for what is to come.
POL ROGER TABLE (3)
This is a good-sized fence which should get horses up in the air and let them know that they are at Burghley.
LAMBERT’S SOFA (2)
i e the first fen e and despite the ul y presen e of Daniel a ert the Sofa is straightforward and should get competitors warmed up and into a rhythm.
LEMIEUX ARENA RAILS (4AB)
As riders enter the Main Arena one minute into their round they ill need to on entrate since there is a lot to look at here. They should meet the Rails out of a stride as they
ride through the turn ut they ill need to be accurate and maintain balance as they go fro the first o er to the se ond o qui they are here will depend on the line they choose between the two.
DEFENDER VALLEY (5ABCD)
As horses leave the Main Arena they will travel downhill into Defender Valley. The downhill approach to the rails at requires riders to keep in alan e and under ontrol onfident ride is needed jumping over the MIM rails followed by the ditch a stride later, (5B), then accuracy must be
maintained over the corner at (5CD). As the rails at are on a MIM clip, riders will want to negotiate them in a round, active canter [because if their horse clouts them the clip could break, allowing the rail to drop and incurring penalties]. There is a longer alternative here, but I don’t see many using it unless they get into trouble.
TRIPLE BAR (6)
Galloping down the lane, riders come to this very large, wide fence over a ditch. They will want to maintain energy to power them across.
HOLLAND COOPER LEAF PIT (7ABCD)
Moving on up the hill, competitors approach a new-look Leaf Pit. The drop on to the slope is steep, and they never know how big a jump their horse will give them. On landing, riders must control the forward momentum so they an find their line over a dou le brush and very angled brushes just two strides later. It all happens very quickly.
DEFENDER VALLEY (8)
As riders hit the three-minute mark, they will come to a log stack, a massive new fence that will stare them down on the long approach. Hopefully they’ll meet it on a yer
HERBERT’S HOLLOW (9AB)
The first triple rush is set ust before the edge of the Hollow, and the second comes at the top of the rise. The line the riders pick here ultimately determines the number of strides they ride between the first and se ond triple rush
Horses need to be brave as it will seem like a good-sized drop after the first one and they on t see the landing on the second until they are in the air.
DEFENDER TROUT HATCHERY (10ABC) AND (11AB)
powerful canter is needed to approach the kayak store that sits at the top of the slope leading to the Trout Hatchery. As the horses descend the slope the riders will need to control the canter so they can then ride forward up the slope to the bounce of cabins. Horses ust aintain onfiden e over the second cabin as it drops them into the second pool. Once in the ater they ust find their line to jump up the bank (11A) to a narrow brush cabin (11B), which will drop them back into the upper pool.
There are longer alternatives at both fence 10 and 11.
WATERLOO RAILS (12) AND VOLTAIRE DESIGN BRUSH (13)
The gallop up the hill to the aterloo lain gives horses a han e to settle efore t o straightforward galloping fences: the Waterloo Rails and the Voltaire Design Brush. These should oost onfiden e efore the ne t ig question
JOULES AT THE MALTINGS (14ABC)
The direct route sees riders jump a beautiful hare on a hump, moving directly on to a right-hand and then a left-hand open corner. If they make a good job of the hare, they should meet the corners on a good stride, but total precision is needed as they are big and must be respected. There are multiple longer routes, but they will all eat up time.
ROLEX (15ABC)
Just after six minutes into the course, competitors should meet this combination out of a forward stride. They’ll have to stay dead straight to a very narrow ditch and brush, followed two strides later by a very narrow triple brush. There is a slightly longer route here, but I see most trying the straight way.
PARASOL TABLE (16)
Riders gallop over a raised, ridge li e yover efore o ing to this ni e let up fen e
IRISH HORSE BOARD BANK (17AB)
Following Winners’ Avenue, next comes the Irish orse Board Ban hile it appears to e a ig galloping fen e riders need to aintain ontrol to navigate the ig log set at right angles after ards hi h ay e u ped fro either side
COTTESMORE LEAP (18)
Galloping further up Winners’ Avenue should give horses a brief breather before coming to this very large leap. It is a big, bold, galloping type of fence that riders will want to meet on a perfect stride.
FAIRFAX & FAVOR AT KEEPERS (19AB)
Leaving the top of the course, riders bend right-handed through a dip to arrive here. Jumping in over a D brush sets them on a bending line to a right-hand brush corner that would be relatively straightforward were it not for a slight change in terrain on the approach that may affect their stride.
DEFENDER AT THE DAIRY MOUND (20ABC)
Just before the nine-minute mark comes Defender at the Dairy Mound. Riders will want to keep forward momentum up the slope to the ascending rails at the top, to sustain the stride and accuracy for two narrow triple bars that follow. There’s a steep slope after the first fro hi h riders ust turn for the second. If horses are tiring, it’ll be imperative for riders to help them out and ride a good line to avoid a dreaded run out. There are alternatives that allow more distance between fences, all of which cost time.
PARDUBICE (21)
This is a big galloping fence but will allow the riders to keep moving.
ROLEX GRAND SLAM AT CAPABILITY’S CUTTING (22)
Next, riders must show their horses the line to a fairly straightforward left-hand log corner. This should not cause a problem, but will keep them thinking.
AGRIA LIFETIME EQUINE SLATE MINE (23)
Galloping down the hill, the Slate Mine is always a massive fence and comes just before 10 minutes.
BOODLES RAINDANCE (24,25AB)
Here, riders hold their line through two jewellery boxes and must stay positive over a wave into the ater The drop here is signifi ant so a strong body position is important in case there are any missteps on landing.
LION BRIDGE (26 AND 27)
At this point, competitors jump a log trailer before entering the water to jump a fish or a fishing lodge at the top of the rise.

HORATIO’S GARDEN (28) AND DEFENDER FINALE (29)
Heading for home, riders have only Horatio’s Garden and the Defender Finale efore rossing the finish
It is my hope that all horses and riders have a safe and successful competition, that they enjoy the course and that they go on to a good day of showjumping on Sunday.
