Community asked to help power Engine Room site By Mike O’Connor COMMUNITY organisations and businesses are being invited to submit proposals to use the former riverfront Engine Room on Macquarie Street, Teneriffe. This follows approval for the repurposing of the site by the Planning and Environment Court. Brisbane City Council Central Ward Councillor Vicki Howard said a Registration of Interest process began on 1 October. Cr Howard told the Teneriffe Progress Association that she had asked council for this extra step in the approval process to allow unique proposals such as community partnerships with businesses and social enterprises to be considered. “We will allow plenty of time for potential applicants to put their proposals to council,” she said. Cr Howard urged local community organisations or local small business operators with an interest in the Engine Room to contact her so that she could connect them with the council officers assessing the proposals. “The next step would be for council to proceed to a formal Request for Proposal which is part of the standard process for these types of buildings. “I have already started discussions with organisations such as Footprints and the Submariners Association to see if they might like to be involved somehow in this operation,” she said Cr Howard stressed the council listened to community concerns and said it had recently refused two development applications for Oxlade Drive in New Farm. “There’s another application at Teneriffe for12 storeys and we’ve said no to the 12 storeys. We said to go back and have another look. “If they don’t come back with

something that fits within the rules, we’ll say no,” she said. She defended council’s decision to approve the construction of three controversial towers on the former ABC riverfront site at Toowong as a positive outcome for the city. “The person who bought that land could by rights under the state planning provision, the neighbourhood plan and the city plan, have built five 15 storey buildings on that block of land. “That would have meant no one would see the river, no one would get to see historic Middenbury House on that site or the beautiful fig trees near the river. “The three towers allow visuals and access to the river. I think it looks fabulous,” she said. Cr Howard said she was comfortable with the pace of development in Central Ward but conceded that the empty retail outlets in some buildings were a cause for concern. “It’s tough to get the right people in but council can’t interfere with private business. I think that the market does decide and it does take a little while sometimes to get there. “I think that’s the problem. It doesn’t happen overnight. Council does not like to say you must, for example, put a bakery in there. It’s up to the person to look at the market and see what is available. “Look at Emporium (retail complex). It’s gone through its ups and downs but it seems to be stable now. It’s about the business model. I don’t think we can be that prescriptive,” she said.

Uber successful enterprise is unstoppable force for change WHEN taxi drivers complained to the Lord Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, that Uber drivers were undercutting their fares, his reply was to the point.

the comment By Mike O’Connor

“Yes, they are,” he said. “It’s called the free market. You are dealing with a huge economic force which is consumer choice, and the taxi trade needs to recognize that.” In December the Queensland Taxi Strategic Plan expires, which gives the State Government less than three months in which to produce a new policy, one that takes into account the success of Uber. Is Uber successful? Of course it is. If it wasn’t the Taxi Council, which represents traditional taxi owners, wouldn’t be trying so hard to have it shut down. Why is it successful? Because it’s cheaper than taxis and convenient. Two million New Yorkers use the service and a million Londoners. Any attempt to ban it will be seen to be motivated by a desire to protect the business interests

of taxi owners. To date, the State Government has sent out transport inspectors posing as Uber customers and fined Uber drivers. Uber has responded by blocking the phone accounts of inspectors meaning they have to keep buying new mobile phones. Apparently no one is government has any sense of farce. People who bought taxi licences which have now declined in value may feel wronged but they failed to see the market changes that were taking place. Retailers like David Jones and Myer were caught flat-footed by the switch to on-line shopping. Should the taxpayer bail them out because they made ill-informed business decisions? We need a taxi policy that includes Uber. Any attempt to suppress or restrict it will be poorly received by the travelling public. The horse has bolted, probably in an Uber share ride, and any policy that fails to acknowledge this is doomed to fail.

Daemion hoping for a fairytale ending By Tina Wood NEWSTEAD artist and illustrator Daemion George-Cox is hoping for a storyline worthy of a Disney film when he submits a portfolio of his work to the legendary animation studio next month. Daemion, 28, (featured on the cover page) spends every spare minute practicing and perfecting his art. With a steadily growing Facebook following and a maxed out friend request list from fans and strangers, there is no doubt that, like his extroverted personality, his artwork resonates with many. Fortunately, his art seems to fit nicely into the style made famous by Disney. This year marks the animation giant’s 60th anniversary and Daemion is about to send off his his third application and portfolio. If he is successful, he could be working as a Disney animator in a matter of months. Stepping into his quaint Newstead apartment, there is no doubt it is the home of a creative personality. An origami garland hangs above the living room window and pots of beautiful plants line the length of the sill. The bookshelf is colour-coded and several large, painted canvases decorate the walls. Daemion’s workstation takes up a tidy corner of the room, a tall desk balancing a huge screen and an expensive tablet for his Photoshop work.

During his years as a student at Kelvin Grove state high school, Daemion’s most memorable art achievement was winning a QUT art competition for his 3D art book submission, complete with pop-out characters. In a surprising twist, his first experience at university was in applied science where he studied genetics at QUT. “Half the time they would be talking about stuff and I would just be drawing at the back of class,” he recalls. When he found himself in hot water for helping his friends draw their biology diagrams, he decided to drop out and reenroll in his true passion, animation. Daemion’s first year as an animation student was not what he had expected. The lecturer explained on the first day of class that if students wanted a well-paid job and successful careers, animation was not the way to go. “The lecturers that had worked in the industry really wanted to give you this slice of reality,” he said. Realising that university wasn’t for him, in 2003 Daemion submitted a portfolio of his works to the DisneyToon Studios in Sydney, scoring an internship in the months before the facility was closed down. His six months there were spent storyboarding and later creating princess illustrations for magazines under Disney Publishing. He comically recounts his

experience, saying in hindsight he doesn’t think they were as impressed with his portfolio as he thought at the time. “I was just one of those people who never really took no for an answer so I guess they took pity on me”. Daemion has taken the same approach to his current application for a top animation job with The Walt Disney Studios in Los Angeles. He first submitted a portfolio after receiving an out-of-theblue Facebook message from Tangled director and Disney success story Nathan Greno. Greno encouraged Daemion to apply for a position at Disney as a concept artist. During the final stages of selection, Daemion was asked to come back next time with more strength to his technique. “There are 11 positions and I’m applying for one. This is the whole world I’m competing against,” he said. Daemion re-applied with a fresh portfolio in February and came so close that he received constructive criticism from Disney’s head of directing, Matthew Roberts.“Whenever you submit to Disney, they have a little disclosure box where it says because of the sheer volume of submissions, they can’t give individualized feedback,” he says. “That was a huge honour, massive. Because he had thousands of submissions.”

What’s the hype about Thermage Skin Tightening? Alice Harwood and Phoebe Pickering, Thermage experts at Australian Skin Clinics Myer Centre, talk you through the ins and outs of the age defying skin treatment and how you can tone and firm your skin. With many celebrities singing its praise, from Gwyneth Paltrow to Michelle Obama, it’s obvious why Alice and Phoebe are in such high-demand.’ Alice says Thermage is a “Natural, no anaesthetic, no chemicals and no downtime treatment that helps tighten and tone the skin, meaning that you can go back to your normal activities straight away”. “The unique radio frequency travels past the epidermis into the dermal layer and subcutaneous layer” She says. “It then creates a change within the skin that helps activate your cells to wake up, produce more collagen and strengthen the bands within the skin.” Phoebe says “As your body produces more collagen, your skin starts to regain the elasticity of your youth, without needing to resort to more drastic measures”. She says it takes approximately two to six months to see results, with collagen production reportedly lasting up to three to five years. Alice says “It’s a fact that technology is constantly evolving, we want you to be able to as well”. With Australian Skin Clinics offering the new “Comfort Pulse Technology” the treatment is more comfortable and more effective than previous technologies. From reducing the visibility of fine lines and “turkey necks”, Thermage is also effective at tightening loose and stretched tummy post-pregnancy and hooding eyelids. Interested? Teneriffe celebrates fantastic festival success

FOLLOWING the successful 2015 Teneriffe Festival, I am pleased to be able to write to you, the local community, and give you an update and thank you for your continued support. This year’s event was very different because it was our first time having a $2 entry charge and this came about after a number of meetings with the local police who have been working closely with the management team to make sure it continues to be a great family day. The police advised the best way to manage the security was to limit the number of entry and exit points and also have a small charge to cover the additional cost of security. As a board we debated if a charge was necessary. However with the increasing costs to stage an event of this magnitude, it became a unanimous decision. The budget for the first event back in 2010 was around $100,000 and we called in a lot of favours to cover costs! Now in its sixth year, the budget has roughly doubled; it’s a fact of life that the more successful the event, the more it costs. Some of our largest cost increases are for services such as security, waste and cleaning and portable toilets. Music continues to be a highlight of the event and subsequently professional sound, lighting and stages are vital. This year we were supported with the Mirvac

River stage, The Nova stage and the Merthyr Village stage. Every year we receive and enormous amount of feedback and I would especially like to thank Cr Vicki Howard for taking the initiative of holding a public meeting following the Festival. The detailed local feedback was presented at our most recent board meeting and we are currently

They include Jillian Kingsford Smith, Stephen Holmes, David Hinchliffe, Grace Grace MP, Cr Vicki Howard, Cr David McLachlan, Michael Hawke, Anita Jakins and Ross Garnett. We are a small and dedicated team and we do put in a lot of time, year round. Most people wouldn’t realise that we are a not-for-profit organisation so we work on extremely limited resources with the aim of putting as much back into the community as possible.

I would like to make a special mention of the Brisbane City Council who have been a very important stakeholder and, more importantly, a great supporter in many ways. working through a number of the issues and seeing how the ideas can be implemented with next year’s Festival. With our sixth and most successful event this year there is always an enormous responsibility on the board of locals who volunteer their time, to make the event what it is today, so it would be remiss of me to not thank the board members, most of who have been with the event since day one, as well as living or working in Teneriffe.

Installing a mate next to Gloria in front of MacTaggerts Woolstore is a perfect example of this. For future years we would like to see the formation of some subcommittees to add to the expertise. The event management company, Kinetic Events, is headed by Murray Sutherland (who was also an inaugural member of the board) and wellsupported by a great team including event managers Hayley Mason and Sarah Ponturo. I would like to personally the team at Kinetic Events

as they do an enormous amount of work and help us to make the event a great success. There are a lot of other people to thank and that includes a group of valued sponsors headed by event sponsor Suez Environment, Energex, Mirvac plus our wonderful store holders. But, I would like to make a special mention of the Brisbane City Council who have been a very important stakeholder and, more importantly, a great supporter in many ways. On behalf of the board I would like to thank the many thousands of visitors that just keep coming all day and into the evening to have a great time. I can assure you that the board of the Teneriffe Festival along with the team at Kinetic Events will work hard over the coming months as we prepare for our 2016 festival and we welcome any feedback, support or suggestions so please visit our website’s contact page www.teneriffeprogress.org to register any additional feedback you may have or email Jillian personally on media@teneriffefestival.org. Active part of Peninsula community NATIONAL Seniors lists feeling safe and belonging amongst the three most important factors leading to a good life and those of us living in the New Farm Peninsula area are very fortunate in the friendly and supportive community spirit which thrives here.

seniorsvoice by Tony Townsend

No doubt the wide variety of activities which bring us together, young and not so young, as well as the many cafes, restaurants and other entertainment venues contribute to this good spirit, and New Farm Branch is proud of its contribution both locally and further afield. Indeed often the only limitations are time, competing interests and knowing what is available Our monthly Newsletter, which anyone can access on our website www. nsanewfarmbranch.com, lists not only Branch news but many other events on the Peninsula. As well, our Stitch & Bitch group is knitting squares for rugs for local nursing homes as well as jumpers and beanies for the Nepal Australia Friendship Association; we have donated to the drought appeal supporting communities hard stressed in the State

and supported local charities. Like many in the community, our members come from a wide variety of backgrounds and interests and often support other groups on the Peninsula ranging from choral societies to the Croquet Club. As Spring develops, the Branch also plans several activities in October for our members and anyone else interested: • Weekly Mah-jong Thursday mornings at New Farm Bowls Club • Stitch & Bitch meeting Friday morning 16 October at the New Farm Library • Dinner, when we particularly welcome people interested in National Seniors but unable to attend daytime meetings, on 16 October at Merthyr Bowls (Oxlade Drive) from 6pm •Tour of the Cathedral of St Stephen on the morning of Wednesday, 28 October • Our November General Meeting on Wednesday, 4 October, at the Merthyr Uniting Church from 9.15am when we will hear from Vicki James of RACQ CareFlight. We will enjoy a Sausage sizzle in the Courtyard after the meeting If you are interested in joining please come along to any or all of these activities and remember – not all Seniors have one foot in the grave and the other on a banana skin, we welcome anyone aged 50 or more! Music program celebrates 10th By James Breene

EARLY childhood music program Wee Make Music is celebrating 10 years of educating children with song and sound and continues to grow from its New Farm and Bulimba studios. Program writer and coordinator Louise Carlile said many families were now bringing their fourth and fifth children though the program. “I really loved the concept and I knew that I could be good at doing this so I put it all together,” said Ms Carlile. “There are few activities that you can employ for your child that offer as well rounded holistic learning as a Wee Make Music. music program.” The benefits of early childhood teaching led Ms Carlile to create her tool for teaching both developmental and musical skills to children from three months old to pre-prep.Ms Carlile said she had found that each child learned differently and so had adopted a caseby-case method by testing what children are good at, and what they need to improve on. Two years ago Ms Carlile decided to open a new studio at Wilston after running successful classes at New Farm and five days a week at Bulimba. Musical activities include tickle rhymes, circle dances, instrument playing, listening, musical stories, mime, musical appreciation, chair games, movement puppets and props, beat activities and concentration/memory games. Cafes, parks, and parking all located near the studios. For information visit www.weemakemusic.com.au or email info@weemakemusic.com.au.

Residents remain wary of revised riverside development By Mike O’Connor A REVISED development application for the Riverside Marine site at 17 Skyring Terrace, Teneriffe, proposes two eight storey residential towers with street and riverfront retail outlets. Previous proposals related to buildings of at least 15 storeys. However it is believed that health and safety concerns were raised by Energex in relation to siting and height of the proposed buildings relative to its cross-river electricity transmission tower, which is adjacent to the site. The new development application proposes the two buildings be constructed on the southern end of the site. The transmission tower is at the northern end. The president of the Teneriffe Progress Association, Ben Pritchard, says this new application related to only half of the site. “These are still pretty big buildings. They’re much taller than the Woolstores. “The other thing is that Riverside has asked the Brisbane City Council for six years to develop the site rather than the usual four years,” he said. Trendy apartments with a woolly history still a sheer inspiration two decades later THIS month marks 20 years since Newstead’s Teneriffe Apartments, on the corner of Arthur Street and Commercial Road, entered the new epoch of accommodating residents instead of wool bales. Early buyers in 1995 paid from $95,000 to $296,000 for apartments—with polished hardwood floors, high ceilings and large windows—which opened onto a spacious internal atrium. historicalsociety Needless to say, they by Gerard Benjamin sold quickly. Several of those original buyers still live in the heritage woolstore. They well remember this part of Teneriffe in 1995 as a rundown post-industrial area, ripe ready for the novel concept of urban renewal which began gathering momentum a few years before. Patella Holdings converted the building into 66 apartments with several ground floor commercial spaces. Opening Teneriffe Apartments on 25 August 1995, Lord Mayor Jim Soorley considered it a ‘symbolic development’ because it transformed an otherwise useless old building into trendy living space. The building had its inception 65 years earlier, when, in June 1930, the City Council gave approval for the erection of a woolstore. Because it was so close to residential housing, there was a proviso that it not be used to store hides and skins or other noxious goods. It was completed in 1931. The faded lettering on the building’s brickwork

near the Arthur Street corner reads “Primaries No. 3 Woolstore”. It’s a reminder that the store once complemented Primaries No. 1 store on Skyring Terrace and behind it, No. 2. In the 1930s, wool bales were shunted between Woolstore No. 3 and its predecessors, either by ‘wool lumpers’ with their bale hooks and small trolleys, or by transport drays drawn by Clydesdale horses. Primaries Nos. 1 and 2 both succumbed to a dramatic fire in January 1990. * * * Is heritage woolstore living still popular? Assuredly yes, says Richard Johnson, who jumped at the opportunity to acquire the management rights to Teneriffe Apartments late in 2014. “It’s a wonderful building that is full of character,” he says, ”and it attracts so much interest from visitors.” “Some are ‘knocked out’ by the visual impact of our grand foyer, and have never seen anything like it. “A fellow doing a delivery for the first time commented that all the incredible internal timbers reminded him of his childhood in Tasmania. Some people just love the heritage feel. That’s why we thought that it was time to install an historical plaque so that people could become acquainted with some facts about the woolstore’s past,” said Richard. The Teneriffe Apartments plaque adds to the network installed on the peninsula under the auspices of the New Farm and Districts Historical Society.

A FASHION parade showcasing New Farm’s most exciting fashion destinations will be among the highlights of the Bi-Annual Holy Spirit High Tea at the Garden Marquee, Victoria Park Golf Complex, on 16 October. Destinations, Biffi, Camargue, Samantha Ogilvie, Nic and Wils and Worth will be Paraded. Sponsors include Victoria Park Golf Complex, Halcyon House and Diamonds International with Outshine, Healthworks Fitness Centre, Function Well, Lennon Fitness, and New Farm Cinemas the local sponsors. “The sponsors are really supportive, it’s fantastic as we couldn’t pull it off without them. It’s also a success because everyone tries to contribute, including many small businesses in the community, “Julia Joesph said. The High Tea committee of Siobhan Bickle, Julia Joesph, Elisha Bickle and Kate Tyszkiewicz are promising a program better than ever. There will be more than 40 raffle prizes and a silent auction. Tickets are $50 through www.flexischools.com.au with all proceeds going to the Holy Spirit School.

villageview by Beth J Leach A name doesn’t change someone or something. However, identity is being who or what a thing is and names are bound to the group of letters that summon the vision of someone or thing, so it’s important the name fits. Confucius is quoted as having said, “If names be not correct, language is not in accordance with the truth of things.” Myself, I’ve had my own personal ‘name journey’. As a child I vividly remember asking my mother if I could take my middle name as my first Christian name. It didn’t happen. As an adult I had to ask myself if I had the courage to do this because it was right for me. Galileo believed that, “Names and attributes must be accommodated to the essence of things, and not

the essence to the names, since things come first and names come afterwards,” and I tend to agree. And so did the people of Teneriffe who voted to stake a claim in their own identity by separating themselves from Newstead in 2010, by reversing a decision made by the government many years before. Teneriffe had always been different in essence, architecture, industry and history to New Farm and Newstead and it was time to acknowledge this by formally becoming a suburb again. Merthyr, in New Farm, was, and is, a recognised neighbourhood or unbounded locality deemed by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines’ Place Names Board to be too small to have the status of a suburb. From general consensus it encompasses the streets Griffith, Oxlade, Brunswick (but not north of Brunswick), Barker, Moray and everything in between (correct me if I am wrong). Gerard Benjamin and Gloria Grant’s fascinating book, Reflections On New Farm, unearthed historical resistance to Merthyr being named New Farm due to the extreme contrast between the two parts of New Farm. Merthyr, it was said, had a stately style, larger blocks, different architecture and history. One could ask, should locality size matter?

It’s with great sadness that I share that the Groovykids Family is relocating. Therefore, for the FIRST TIME EVER, Groovykids is being offered FOR SALE. Obviously I would love one of my locals to continue on my vision & purchase this great business. If you are interested, please contact me (Tracey) on 0435 228 224 or erinsmum@groovykids.com.au

New Traffic Lights for Teneriffe

It is with great pleasure that we announce the start of the Commercial Road, Skyring Terrace and Vernon Terrace intersection upgrade. The upgrade will provide important safety improvements to the intersection. The upgrade will include new signals and turn pockets for traffic accessing Commercial Road and the Teneriffe Ferry Terminal to improve traffic flow at the intersection. This project will deliver benefits for all road users. New signals will improve accessibility for public transport users. On-road bike lanes and signalised pedestrian crossings will deliver safer access for cyclists and pedestrians. The project will be delivered in two stages. The first will involve the important upgrade to the intersection. The second stage will include the relocation of one of the two CityCycle stations located near the intersection, on Commercial Road and Vernon Terrace. As part of stage 2, car parking bays will be returned in place of the CityCycle station. Work on stage 1 of the upgrade will start in early October. Details and timing for stage 2 will be confirmed following the completion of stage 1 works. We look forward to delivering this intersection upgrade for the area.

Rob Hirst and Sean Sennett relax in between recording sessions.

Rob Hirst and Sean Sennett have just released a new collaborative album, Crashing The Same Car Twice. Here local boy Sean describes what it was like working with the man from Midnight Oil’s engine room. By Sean Sennett ROB Hirst earned his rock and roll stripes playing drums in Midnight Oil. Of course, he also did much more than that. Together with Jim Moginie, Rob co-wrote some of the band’s most seminal tracks including Beds Are Burning, The Dead Heart, When The Generals Talk, Blue Sky Mine and … the list goes on. That’s how I first met Rob, as a songwriter. I had been asked to participate in a songwriting workshop where 10 writers from around the country and overseas were invited to promoter Michael Gudinski’s property at Mt Macedon in Victoria to come up with a few tunes. The scenario meant that, each day, you were paired with another writer and, together, you went off to a quiet corner to write a song. Rob and I wrote one pretty quickly called Who’s Sorry Now? We recorded a demo of the song that afternoon and it sat in a drawer for years. During the intervening time, Rob and I became friends. Occasionally we’d get together and write. A small stockpile of material was starting to develop and Rob finally suggested we should get together and put some of those ideas down in a recording studio. The first session took place at Black Box Studios in Newstead with Jeff Lovejoy (Sahara Beck/Powderfinger/ The Cruel Sea). Jeff is a fine rock producer and we

quickly put down three songs including what was to become the title track of the finished album, Crashing The Same Car Twice. Both Rob and I were excited by the results and the idea of recording a single quickly grew into recording a full-blown album. The final record was cut at a lightning pace: with the bulk of the sessions taking place at Jason Millhouse’s Coorparoo studio, Organic Audio. Jason recorded the tunes, played terrific guitar and mixed the final product. A renaissance man, Jason also shot and edited the first video from the album, When Darkness Comes. We were joined throughout the sessions by bassist Derek Haas who was described by Rob as something of a cross between Rick Grossman (Hoodoo Gurus) and the Oils’ legendary bassist, “Giffo”. When you make an album, people invariably ask you “what does it sound like?” Essentially, it’s grown men making a garage rock album. When pushed, this is how Mr Hirst described it: “Rob Hirst and Sean Sennett?” he thinks out loud. “They love garages and pubs and guitars and drums. They write songs about crashed cars and crushed hearts. They play songs that start before the band is ready and end before the neighbours complain.” Rob Hirst + Sean Sennett’s Crashing The Same Car Twice is out now through Sony Music.

Schoolyard game inspires awareness By James Breene

Blonde On Blonde to play at Woolly Mammoth.

Blonde On Blonde set to rock the Valley By James Breene

After spending most of 2014 touring Europe, Brisbane band Blonde On Blonde returns to the Valley to support alt rock group Blind Melon on 21 October at the Woolly Mammoth. Band members Jack, Zara, Jonny, Eliza and Duckboi, two of who are Teneriffe locals, recently released the single Night On My Mind and this gig is the next event on the calendar. New band member Eliza Heath will make her first live appearance at the show and showcase her vocals and bass guitar skills. In the past the band has supported such high-profile acts including INXS, Tame Impala, Wolfmother and Grinspoon. Blonde on Blonde will kick the night off contrasting its intrinsic psychedelic indie infused rock and roll against the California rock synonymous with Blind Melon. This gig is the start of a national tour for Blind Melon which is bringing its memorable 90s rock to Australia for the first time. This year marks Blind Melon’s 25th anniversary and 20 years since lead singer Shannon Hoon died. In recent years the band has recovered from the tragedy and has been playing gigs across the United States. Venue and ticket Information can be found at mammothmanestage.com.au

True blue with a touch of maroon now top of the table

WHEN watching an exciting oneday cricket match at the Gabba in 1988, I stayed in my seat after Australia had won, reflecting in the great spirit of the game. I then saw a familiar face or two crossing the oval from the legendary ‘Hill’ at the Gabba. It was a cheerful Chris Johns, the Brisbane Broncos centre,

villagepeople by Gary Balkin

leading a couple of his team-mates towards the cricketers’ dressing rooms. Undoubtedly the trio would be welcomed warmly into the home team’s haven by Ian Healy and captain Alan Border, as their relationship was a convivial one. Both Queensland cricketers were often seen in the Broncos’ dressing rooms post-match, as well. I reminded Chris Johns of my recollection of such times only recently, and he confirmed: “Oh yes, we had a special bond, and we still have. In that era there were the Brisbane Bullets basketballers, the Queensland Bulls, then in 1987-88 along came the Brisbane Bears (later

to be the Lions) and the Brisbane Broncos. It was a heady era with Brisbane Expo ’88 on the world stage. A great year for our team to be welcomed by Queensland fans.” The relationship between ‘Heals’ and ‘Johnsie’ was later to become entrenched on a business basis, with the two mates and a third, Kevin Walters or ’Kevvie’, being founding owners of the thriving Hoppys Handwash Café carwash business. In 2015 Kevvie is an assistant coach of the Brisbane team under his long-time mentor Wayne Bennett, and sold his share of Hoppys some years ago to fulfil his coaching dreams to go to France and coach the Catalans Dragons and well beyond. Heals is a busy cricket commentator and news broadcaster these days, so Chris Johns is the everyday face of the Handwash Café, along with his young brother and fellow-director, Cameron. Most sporting followers know that Chris Johns played for NSW and Australia, but do they know he was born a Queenslander? “Actually,” related Chris, “My parents were both Queenslanders who moved to Sydney, where I grew up. So as they say in Origin folklore, once a ‘Blue’ always a ‘Blue’. But Queensland is my home! The family moved back when I signed with the Broncos. “The biggest break in my life was

signing with the Broncos. I had played first grade with St George, as had Billy Noke (who also moved to Brisbane). We were invited for lunch on the Kookaburra Queen paddle wheeler with Roy Masters, our former coach, by the Brisbane club owners and CEO John Ribot as a formal welcome. “Their message, apart from footy expectations of us, was that they would assist players towards a profitable ‘life after football’. The winning and social culture of the club on and off the field was in its roots. Wayne Bennett’s arrival as founding coach would cement the progress. “I met my wife Lisa early on, at Fridays nightclub. We married that year and spent our honeymoon in England. I had a long-standing agreement to play with Barrow in our off-season, and although ‘a working honeymoon’, the footy was not so successful. The coach was a shortterm signing, we lost more than we won, but we enjoyed the camaraderie of the English people. “We won our first Broncos premiership in 1992, our fifth year, against St George Dragons. We had a good win, and the crowd back at the airport in Brisbane was tremendous, and the cheering crowds seemingly lined all the way back into town. It was a memory we will hold forever. In

those days the mobs loved the ‘body surfing’ over their heads, and both the ultra-conservative Wayne and adventurous ‘Alf’ (Allan Langer) were urged to dive from the outdoor stage into the crowd and the mob passed them overhead steadily but surely. One way to show their appreciation. “Jack Gibson had many famous quotes relating to winning and losing in sport. One was ‘too many pats on the back puts you to sleep.’ I guess that happened to the Rabbitohs this year. That certainly applied to our 1993 Premiership run. We were fifth, just scraping in to the semifinals, as there were 16 teams in the competition, but only five finalists. We were flying under the radar, in my opinion, but one lunch-time over a drink a bookie declared that the Broncos were out of the running and said they were a 5 to 1 chance. I said ‘Okay, $5000 then!’ and later I was more concerned about having to go home to share the news with Lisa. We could legally back ourselves in that era, so far from worrying the coach, it inspired the team to recover their self-belief, and I like to think. “Next morning the bookie rang me and generously offered me to cancel the bet. I said ‘No way. The bet’s on!’ I laid off some of the bet with Kevvie and Alf and we shared a good win that year.” Chris was

rapt to be playing with Alf and with Wally Lewis in earlier seasons: “In Origin matches, Wally fair dinkum intimidated opposing players like Terry Lamb and Cliff Lyons and I used to say to my Blues teammates: ‘C’mon, he is only mortal, same as you and me’, but Wally influenced Origin games strongly”. Chris played 10 Origin games for NSW and nine Tests for Australia. When selected for the Kangaroos to tour the UK in 1990, Chris told the audience recently at a Brisbane Men of League luncheon: “I did not think I would get picked for the tour, but worked out that a Queensland member of the selection panel must have tipped the scales in my favour.” This writer attended the lunch and was told by Les Geeves, then a state and national selector: “That was an easy selection. I considered Chris Johns the best centre in Australia that year.” He played 191 games in Broncos colours, 56 for St George prior to that (he had been a district junior), and 28 games for Castleford and Barrow. He continues: “During my early playing years, the Broncos had a generous Optus sponsorship, and Kevvie and I accepted an opportunity to open an Optus World franchise shop, which we operated for a few years. We realised, though, it wasn’t for us.” He knew retirement and ‘life after football’ was looming, so in 1994-

96 he spent two years as Broncos Assistant Marketing Manager, then a year as Football Manager, while still playing. Chris relates what followed: “I retired and was offered a job with the News Ltd Super League Football department. But ‘Ribes’, (John Ribot, the outgoing Broncos CEO) who was heading up the new Melbourne Storm franchise, invited me to be the first CEO of the club”. Chris Johns and founding chairman Ribot, along with departing Broncos player Glenn Lazarus as team captain, immediately set about building a mighty NRL club, and their first premiership was won in just the second season. After a few more good years Chris, Lisa and family returned to their home in Queensland. Since their first Hoppys at Bowen Hills the concept has flourished. Seven Hoppys are testament to his life after football via his own initiative. An eighth Hoppys, and the second for the Gold Coast, is presently being built in Southport. The others are at Norman Park, Toowong, Manly, Capalaba, Mermaid Waters, and there seems to be no stopping the entrepreneurial, hard-working Chris Johns. Lisa Johns is an integral face in administration, and her office is the head office at Bowen Hills. This Hoppys is central to the Breakfast Creek Hotel, to the Alliance Hotel, and to the Reef seafood diner at the Gasworks, Newstead.

League great Chris Johns at Hoppy’s Bowen Hills car wash. Chris loves a good steak, or good seafood, and he has a merry band of mates who meet weekly to savour their appetites and talk business. Not forgetting the NRL, of course, especially at this time of year. Chris and Lisa have a wonderful marriage, with three daughters, Emma, 25, who is in an internship in Sydney in Industrial Fashion Design; Sarah, 23, works at Geelong Dental Hospital, and Lexie, 15, who is still in high school in Grade 10.

The writer was with Chris Johns in Gympie a few weeks back at a Men of League dinner where we were both guest speakers, and afterwards a local businessman came up to Chris, saying he had used a Hoppys carwash the previous year when in Brisbane. Chris pulled out his iPhone, asked his car rego number, and illustrated within seconds the client’s car detailing, including that he paid for a coffee and newspaper while waiting. Alma leaves with fond memories THE bright and sociable Alma Nukovic has bid farewell to New Farm and has started work at The Pasta Company Shoppe in Tarragindi. 47 year-old Alma became a local customer service personality during her 10 years working in New Farm’s Merthyr Village. Alma arrived in Australia 20 years ago from an Italian refugee camp, escaping the conflict in Bosnia. In 2004 Alma began work, or as she puts it, “making a difference”, at Coles New Farm. The management of Merthyr Village hired her in a customer service role, a position created solely for her, after she left Coles. “They obviously saw the value of me staying put!” Alma says. She calls this the ‘Alma Effect’ and she is proud to say she can bring out the best in people. “It’s been said that if I opened a shop next to Coles selling apples and glue, people would come to me.” Alma worked in this customer service role for two years and at All About Fruit, a family-owned fruit store in Merthyr Village. She says she enjoyed this greatly but knew that there was more in store for her life and it was time for her to leave New Farm.

David Hinchliffe with Alma at the 2012 Teneriffe Festival. She says that she is sad to leave but is very much looking forward to the opportunities her new career holds. “I can make a difference again!” she says “Everyone in New Farm is to be thanked from the bottom of my heart for giving me an opportunity to shine so bright.” Alma can be found working full time at The Pasta Company Shoppe, an authentic Italian delicatessen at Denham Tce in Tarragindi. “People still come to see me from New Farm every week now,” she says. The store offers cooking classes, pre-made meals and authentic produce for commercial food service and home enjoyment.

IT’S new and very cool and has transformed a once notorious brothel into a chic new French restaurant in the Valley. Les Bubbles is Damian Griffiths’ latest creation, gracing the corner of Wickham and Little Street in Fortitude Valley. The Parisian steakhouse is in the very building at the centre of the Fitzgerald Inquiry in the late 80’s – but rest assured, this is the only piece of history which remains. The walls are adorned with pictures and artefacts from this time, taking clientele on a trip down memory lane. The national French dish, Steak frites, are served from 5pm until late with the specialty including a perfectly seared steak, accompanied by bread and salad and bottomless frites (or French fries). Vegetarians and pescetarians are invited to ask for their preferred special of the day. Downstairs, visitors will find Bubbles Bath-House, featuring a fully functional, 15-person spa bath, and a bar with more than enough alcohol choices to fulfill any desire until 3am. Bento for breakfast

MIZU is one of those places you seem to drive past and promise you’ll go one day. Well, you definitely should! Their authentic Japanese meals are crisp, fresh and flavorsome. They do a great selection of share plates including these lovely panko crumbed prawn balls on skewers, with wasabi lime mayonnaise. Mizu has become quite famous for their weekend breakfast which appears to be Brisbane’s only full Japanese version. The popular breakfast bento is different and delicious - grilled fish, chicken karaage, prawn balls, boiled egg, potato salad and pickles served with rice and a bowl of miso soup. Mizu is also special because it’s open Monday nights which is handy if you like to eat out on any given night of the week. Mizu Teneriffe 2 Macquarie Street Teneriffe ph 3254 0488

Chinese for ‘Friend’

IT’S tucked away in a secluded pocket of the Gasworks Plaza dining precinct, but is surprisingly large once you enter the restaurant. Peng You is a modern Chinese restaurant with traditional and contemporary dishes. Coincidentally, I caught up with a friend over a fresh rice noodle and pork belly salad. Not only do they offer a quick lunch menu, but a hefty list of tasty dishes. They have invested in a world class Wine List that has been recognised with the award of a ‘1 Glass Rating’ in the 2015 Gourmet Traveler’s Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards. This is an achievement Peng You are extremely proud of and reflects the great effort the team have put in over the last 12 months to enhance their diners’ experience. SPRINGY, but not sprung It’s been an interesting start to Spring, it certainly has had some peaks and a few troughs. There’s a well supported belief amongst those in the know, that we are in a two stream

market. That means that one section is moving at a different pace to another. Throwing

my two cents in, I’d say it’s a three or four stream market! Inner city houses are moving at a different pace to their neighbouring units, suburban homes are bumbling along nicely

Over the last month I’ve travelled across the country and witnessed some huge differences in each market. I saw a depressed Darwin market, a berserk Sydney Eastern

and the top end market is sprouting green shoots with some big sales filtering through.

Suburbs market and an Ipswich market showing the value signs usually displayed after a

1

market bounces. But it’s the disparity in the Brisbane market that is quite baffling.

The strong sign supporting Brisbane is the low median price when compared to Sydney.

Historically at 50 percent (which is what’s being reported) you see strong capital growth

on the Brisbane property horizon. However 50 percent is not consistent across the entire market, it’s closer to a third in the prestige markets (even 10-15 percent could be

argued!). Obviously the Sydney market is hot and their prices could drop to shorten the

gap, but Brisbane is better than 30 percent of Sydney prestige prices. Even with all the cranes decorating the skyline, we are still exceptional value on the east coast, our interest rates are low and while vacancy is up it’s not catastrophic.

Spring is showing a good wave of new

property, but with the different pace of the markets surprisingly it’s also showing some

good value. It’s a rare time in the market where you can get a good price for your place and feel you can buy value for someone else’s. You will have to buy in a

different stream, but for example that only means upgrading or downsizing. I am

seeing these transactions happening. If you are considering a shift in the short to medium future now’s probably a very good time to investigate a move.

“ I couldn’t recommend Ben Smith and his team highly enough. Ben is highly enthusiastic, realistic, organised and unlike a lot of other real estate agents refreshingly down to earth and ‘real’, often a rarity in this profession where hype tends to abound. Ben’s marketing strategy was right on the mark he kept me informed as to potential buyers whilst his team provided me with the weekly summary reports. He was a master at dealing with the tricky family situation he was placed in, that of a separation and divorce settlement. Ben is a great guy, very, very professional, and an outstanding real estate agent. This was the third property I sold this year and he was by far, even interstate, the most impressive agent I’ve used. Of all the real estate agents I interviewed for this property on the phone, from the word go Ben Smith was the obvious choice.” – Rebecca Lange Happy Vendor

Lume to change Kangaroo Point NEWSTEAD based developer DevCorp is releasing a premium lifestyle project that will forever change the residential landscape of Kangaroo Point. Lume is the vision of DevCorp managing director Murray Thornton, a carpenter by trade who evolved as a hands-on developer wanting to deliver a new standard of residential developments built on unparalleled design and quality construction. Since Mr Thornton established DevCorp in 2001, the company has become renowned for executing specialist subdivisions and multistorey developments that carry the company ethos – Designed for Life. Lume is no exception. The 13-storey luxury apartment tower will rise from three amalgamated land parcels, one of which housed a historic workers cottage circa 1911. As a condition of the Development Approval, the house was salvaged, relocated to Hendra, tastefully refurbished and extended to form a five-bedroom family home. Mr Thornton said the old workers cottage was full of charm and character and the company had no qualms about saving its historic values. “The Brisbane City Council changed

Grazyna Kornel, Karina Velenski, Elyssa Lofay, Richard Barlow, Salane Coronel, Ivo Kornel, Lee Paul, Denise Chee, Terry Christo, Prudence Cox, Sidney Kornel (baby), Tony Cox, Isabella Kornel.

Leading agency now belle of the ball

To register, Lume.com.au or 1800 478 477 its ruling to allow the relocation of heritage-listed buildings to another character area,” Mr Thornton said. “We are one of the first developers to relocate a building under the new legislation.” Lume is set to command a unique view from its position in Kangaroo Point – taking in The Gabba, South Bank, botanic gardens, Brisbane CBD, Story Bridge and the cliffs below New Farm. Built specifically for the owneroccupier, Lume has luxe penthouses and executive one, two and three bedroom apartments.

BELLE Property New Farm has opened on Brunswick Street after buying one of the peninsula’s longest-running real estate agencies, Raine and Horne New Farm Belle Property New Farm Principle, Ivo Kornel, who has been a successful agent on the peninsula for many years, said he was excited with the new business opportunity and about working with Lee Paul who operated Raine and Horne New Farm for 30 years. “I was always conscious of not opening up ‘another’ real estate office if I ever had the opportunity, the last thing this area needs is another real estate firm breathing down your neck,” said Ivo. “When I heard that the unmovable Lee Paul was considering pulling up stumps, I called and next thing I knew we were shaking hands. “I would like to congratulate Lee for flourishing for almost 30 summers in this business. When she started in this business it was a man’s world, so I am pleased to give credit where credit is due.” Lee is staying on in the business in both a selling and property management capacity. “She is ‘still’ the boss and is a great source of wisdom and education,” said Ivo. “We’ve had a fantastic start selling almost $6 million in the first month, and I would also like to welcome Richard Barlow into the business as a salesman,” he added. Belle Property New Farm is a boutique brand that prides itself on stylish, elegant and strategic marketing. The brand is heavily focused on ethical and moral business dealings and this will be again the focus of the new office.
