The New Era Story
From the CEO
Across education, from students and teachers to ICT managers, New Era empowers educational organisations to bring the digital education revolution to life. Back in 1996, we set out to become recognised as New Zealand’s leader in the delivery of next-generation education solutions. Our vision was to be the partner of choice for primary, secondary & tertiary education providers as well as the Ministry of Education working to enhance student achievement and promote new models of learning.
Hello and Happy New Year
Greg Strachan Chief Executive Officer
Hopefully over the Xmas and New Year break the weather was good and you had time to unwind. I know in the Coromandel the consistent south westerly winds made keen fisherman very frustrated to say the least!
It’s been quite a journey, one that has taken us from a small education services provider to the largest integrated education solutions and services company in NZ. Following our merger in 2011 with Editure, New Era Technology now spans New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States and brings unparalleled global and local understanding of educational ICT solutions to our customers.
As usual, late January and February are the crazy months for New Era client schools and us. This year has been no exception and if anything, its been an extreme start to the year due to the added pressure the Corona Virus has generated. Our service desk has been very busy as have our staff on the ground. A major benefit for New Era clients is given our size we can support employing extra staff. At this time of year this it is critically important to have extra hands available to provide additional support to clients when needed. You are our Number One priority.
Today more than two million educators, students and parents globally trust New Era Technology’s ICT and professional development solutions to enhance and achieve their education experiences and goals. With more than 160 employees in NZ and over 400 globally, it is New Era’s knowledge and understanding of the education environment along with its vast experience in state-of-the-art, high quality ICT solutions that allows New Era Technology to stand out from the competition.
2019 was another stellar year for New Era. We continued to grow our client base and promote and develop our teams. During 2019 we developed and have now seen the fruit of creating an internship programme. This has enabled us to ensure many of our new team members have not only relevant qualifications, but ensures they gain many months of real-world experience before joining us permanently.
Our Values:
Like our customers we’re excited about the power and possibilities of technology, the evolution of new devices, platforms and curriculum, and the potential of today’s students to become tomorrow’s leaders.
Amazingness We make a real difference for our customers. We’re passionate about technology, innovation and creativity. Enjoyment We enjoy working in a supportive team environment. We like to have fun and value strong relationships.
Moving into 2020 we have several new initiatives underway; we are currently in the process of developing a customer service programme. As I type this piece, we are initially polling clients to understand where things work well, where we can improve and what if any changes are needed to ensure the best customer service.
Kindness We care for each other and for the environment. We are open and inclusive in what we do as a company. Truthfulness We take ownership of our actions, are transparent in our dealings and we do what we say we’ll do.
Finally, before signing off I would like to leave you with our company values to provide you some insight into who the New Era team are, I am sure many of these are similar if not the same as you have within your organisations. I strongly believe a business or a school that adheres to their values, will grow a strong coherent team that delivers the very best for all stakeholders.
Appreciation We understand our clients’ needs, treat each other fairly, recognise achievement and celebrate success.
Our Partners
Our Values • Amazingness • Enjoyment • Kindness • Truthfulness • Appreciation
Our partners are, without exception, leaders in their fields and work closely with us to ensure our clients are provided with consistently excellent outcomes.
Have a great 2020. Cheers,
Greg Strachan

Digital Fluency for Kawakawa’s
Bay of Islands College Digital technology is improving student outcomes, streamlining administration and supporting the wider community for Bay of Islands College (BoIC), a year 9-13 secondary school with a roll of 300-plus students located in Kawakawa. “Chromebooks for students, professional development for teachers and more digital resources for pedagogy are all having a huge positive impact at our school,” says Debbie Russell, Principal’s PA / Office Manager at BoIC. “We can now take advantage of the benefits of technology and transform lives with a robust and secure network and expert technical support from New Era,” she continues. “This has enabled us to fully engage with Manaiakalani and the Kaikohekohe Trust to build digital fluency amongst students and staff. As a result we can prepare our students and their families for the future with confidence.” Network upgrade requirement BoIC’s journey to fully embrace digital technology kicked into high gear in 2016 when they engaged with New Era. “Our then current network was reaching the end of it’s ‘use-by’ date,” explains Ms Russell, “and was a source of constant frustration. I personally spent at least ten hours a week – over and above my regular duties – trying to sort out network performance issues, licensing, trouble-shooting, you name it. I’m not an ICT expert but I was, by default, getting a crash course in system administration.”
“New Era clearly understood our requirements and proposed a solution that would allow us to move forward with our digital transformation,” says Ms Russell. BoIC signed up with New Era from the beginning of the 2017 school year. Fast implementation The New Era team migrated BoIC’s network operations to EduServe 2, installed more wireless access points and re-configured more than 300 network-connected devices and 100 Chromebooks over a twoweek period during the school holidays.
Client Story:
Digital fluency for Kawakawa’s Bay of Islands College
“There was no disruption at all,” notes Ms Russell. “Just the opposite. Network performance improved immediately and the New Era onsite technician was able to resolve any issues, giving me more time to devote to other school projects.” “The advantage of EduServe 2 for a school like BoIC,” continues Mr Smith, “is that it has been optimised to work smoothly with standard NZ education software such as Kamar, Musac and FamilyZone. Plus, since the network is managed from our central facility, we can provide guaranteed uptime with stringent service level agreements.” The decision was made to investigate options to improve the situation. “We were invited to prepare a proposal for a complete network upgrade,” says Jonathan Smith, Client Manager & Technical Team Leader – Te Tai Tokerau at New Era. “Bay of Islands College was an essentially a ‘green fields’ opportunity as they needed to replace or upgrade their entire infrastructure. They were keen to add more digital resource but their network was holding them back.” Under-the-hood audit “We performed an ‘Under the Hood’ network audit so that we could ascertain BoIC’s current capabilities, traffic requirements and plans for the future,” continues Smith. “They had made a good start on their programme but the technology had moved on since they installed their original equipment and some of their software was inappropriate. “We proposed that BoIC transition their networking requirements to our cloud-based infrastructure solution EduServe 2, upgrade their BYOD (bring your own device) / WiFi capabilities and engage with us to manage their ICT support and maintenance requirements.” It was the Under the Hood audit and EduServe 2 that impressed the most.
Ongoing success “From the onset,” explains Ms Russell, “the New Era team have provided our school, our staff and our students with dedicated and committed ICT support. They resolve the day-to-day ICT issues that arise and have helped us effectively manage the school’s IT needs moving into the future.” “Since the initial engagement,” she continues, “we have built a highlyprofessional and friendly relationship with New Era. Their commitment, support and encouragement to our school has been just awesome. The help desk has always been readily available to assist us when needed and the onsite technicians we have are just amazing. “We have been able to rely upon them to manage and keep us up to date with whatever our school has needed in the way of renewal of licenses etc. And New Era keeps us informed of the many updates in the ICT world, especially those that would benefit our school and our student’s learning. “We look forward to continuing with this great working relationship into the future,” she concludes.
Insights:
Stress-testing and School Camps A
nyone who has ever been a teacher or a parent helper at a school camp knows the sense of heightened awareness that you have. You know that, ultimately, you are responsible for things going right while in charge. Sure, not all things do, but chances are that you have planned for this and have some contingency to get things back on track quickly should it be required. It is the perfect blend of elevated stress and watching kids flourish in an unfamiliar environment. Frankly, I have always thought “Teacher Tales from School Camp” would be a great read.
But let’s be fair, we can’t always afford everything we want all the time and sometimes having an individual device break is an inconvenience, but not a catastrophe. However, it is a completely different story when it comes to your network and the potential consequences of failure. Have you ever seen a group of teenagers lose internet at the same time? It always reminds of back-in-the-day at a movie theatre when it would suddenly stop because someone forgot to change the reels. Pandemonium rules.
But I digress. Organisational literature speaks often of the need to essentially “stress test”. Like individuals, organisations (including schools) and their associated systems will come under significant pressure at different times for a variety of reasons. There are a significant number of practitioners who think this is what determines the real ilk of a school - when things are not going as planned, how do they react? School camps are a clear illustration of this. On the downside, we get “Talk-to-the Hand”, The Knee-Jerk and The Double-Down (not the burger). Ignoring the problem (“Talkto-the Hand”), turning the problem into the apocalypse (The Knee-Jerk) or out-and-out denying it really exists through myopic evaluation of the facts (The Double-Down), never really work. You might get away with them a few times, but in the end they erode the fabric and development of both the individual and the organisation. No one has learnt what good looks like and the organisation has gotten into some potentially dangerous habits. Personally, I think this “stress-testing” is the most essential element in determining the depth and strength of a school community. Sure, Open Days and shiny prospectuses are great for putting the best foot forward, but when things inevitability go south, what happens? Do they Double-Down or Knee-Jerk, or do they invite a calm and considered level of communication that reflects a depth of understanding of the various perspectives and shared outcomes? For me, you must stress-test to achieve the desired outcome.
The core of your school’s network is inextricably bound to so many functions, that the impact of failure is immediate and permeates completely. But sadly, regardless of all best intention and practices, it will eventually happen. It’s what happens next that is the most important thing or perhaps even who is responsible for your network and how much stress testing have they done. New Era schools that have a hybrid Public Cloud / EduServe solution in place, have robust fail-safe mechanisms and will just keep ticking along. But what if a major disruption happened outside of this that effected users school-wide? Well, thanks to our proactive monitoring, an automated alert system and dedicated helpdesks, New Era deals with things immediately - believe it or not - sometimes even in the middle of the night - meaning there is a good chance you haven’t even noticed. New Era prides itself on the seamless provision of technology that supports the diversity of teaching and learning practices for our schools. We stress-test the solutions that we provide to our schools, so you don’t have to. So finally, I ask you to think of the technology provision at your school, from devices to the network backbone as a school camp. Has it been thought about and planned for to be as successful as possible for all those involved? How are you going to deal with it when things don’t go as planned? And most importantly, do you have reliable toasters, because toast should always taste better when you are on camp.
So, “What on earth has this got to do with technology in schools?”, you say. Good question, and fortunately I have an answer. Let’s start with this comparison - a laptop computer and a toaster. As you will know from buying things in your own life, quality can vary substantially. The ten-dollar toaster might work for a while, but it probably won’t last under stress-testing (and it might be ugly). The devices that are best suited to schools (known as commercial versions) are usually different from those that are available in a traditional retail environment. They are built to withstand multiple users, being lugged around and sometimes even dropped (look up MIL-SPEC / MIL-STD810G - yes, Military Specification, if you are interested). They generally cost more, but you get what you pay for - and you have a better chance of not being disrupted due to the toaster blowing up when trying to cook for 100 people on school camp.

TotalCloud. Voice. Pricing regulations around New Zealand’s copper telephone network are being relaxed in 2020 due to the near-ubiquitous presence of Ultra-Fast Fibre that can deliver these voice services at a fraction of the cost. This means that replacing your old copper-based phone system is a matter of when, not if. Moving to a cloud-based telecommunications solution means saying goodbye to those old copper lines and expensive hardware, and saying hello to a future-proof, scalable and feature-rich system that allows you to focus on teaching and learning. The key benefits to your school are: Savings on line rental and calling rates Easy integration with other modern systems such as emergency lockdown and paging systems No more costly PABX hardware to purchase and maintain INTERNET CONNECTION
