Power Guru, a renewable energy company based in Bennington, named Readers’ Choice by The Bennington Banner and Manchester Journal for several years running, is working together with Vermonters and New Yorkers towards a sustainable future through the expansion of clean energy. Founded in 2007 by the late Bhima Nitta, Power Guru continues to be a key player in the sustainability movement in Southern Vermont and the surrounding New York area. Power Guru sets itself apart from other solar companies in the region through its unwavering commitment to designing bespoke energy solutions for the community members on a case-by-case basis. This locally oriented philosophy extends beyond business, with employees participating in town governance and volunteer work. The company’s dedication to community reflects the core of what Power Guru stands for: a business dedicated to serving both people and the planet. CEO Alexander Mintz explains what he feels differentiates Power Guru from other solar companies in the area. “If there’s anything we’ve learned from our many years in the industry, it’s that solar is not a one-size-fits-all story. Too often, this sector has been steered by larger companies and conglomerates trying to force cookiecutter systems onto people, instead of respecting what makes each scenario unique. We offer the highest quality products and services designed to generate and store clean electricity, enabling our clients to save money and be more resilient against power outages. Power Guru is a longstanding certified contractor of Tesla Powerwalls for Green Mountain Power. Our solar installations, paired with battery backup systems and EV chargers when needed, create whole-home energy solutions. This approach provides our

Hello, friends of wellness! I’m Mollie Wright, the proud owner of Taylor Farm Hemp Co., and I’m thrilled to share the unique journey and passion behind our business. Opened in January 2020, Taylor Farm Hemp Co. is not just a business; it’s a labor of love, a culmination of years of experience, and a commitment to providing high-quality, handcrafted CBD products. ROOTS IN TRADITION, GROWTH IN INNOVATION Growing up on Taylor Farm, a dairy farm known for its Gouda cheese, I learned the values of hard work, dedication, and a deep connection to the land. After earning my degree in Wellness and Alternative Medicine at Johnson State College in Northern Vermont, I returned home with a mission to combine tradition with innovation. During the Covid pandemic, I officially launched Taylor Farm Hemp Co. My products are good for muscle and joint pain, arthritis, injuries, anxiety, stress, sleep, and more. performances, among many, include appearances on The Tonight Show, America’s Got Talent, and All Stars. She is also the first woman of color comedian to perform at The Bennington Theater. In addition to youth outreach activities as well as educational opportunities such as classes and lecture series, Carlon hopes to engage the larger community to provide entertainment that invites folks to not just come in and see, but to participate in live performances. He is currently searching for actors, musicians, educators, and anyone else with talent to be utilized in a theater. For example, the Theater is working to create The Bennington Players, a local theater group that will

provide a variety of entertainment. There are also plans in the works for a house band that Carlon envisions as accompaniment to for guest artists and special theater events. In addition, the theater now strives to improve the physical condition of the facility with a new sound system, improved ladies’ room, modified lobby space, and modern dressing rooms for the entertainers. The building was the former Knights of Columbus Center and still has many original features that need updating. The call goes out to tradespeople who can help beautify this downtown gem! Carlon wants to accomplish all this by 2024, and while he knows this may seem a lofty goal, he also notes that

“Volunteers from the community are rallying to support the theater’s revival, showing a promising outlook for its future.” The Bennington Theater is located at 331 Main Street in Bennington, VT 05201 Phone: (802) 500-5500. The Bennington Theater, once known as The Oldcastle Theater and the Bennington Performing Arts Center, has undergone a major transformation. After shedding their “plays only” model of yore, the Bennington Theater has expanded its venue to encompass a vast range of performing arts. The result: a fresh new lineup of fastidiously curated events that, in addition to classical theater, include comedy, concerts, children’s performances, interactive audience experiences, educational programs, emerging artist debuts and much more. The Theater’s Executive Director, Kevin Carlon says he hopes to build the reputation of the Bennington Theater: “The entertainment we provide, whether locally created, or the search for national talent must be high quality…There will be times when our audience may be unfamiliar with the artist, but they will trust the Theater to be bringing in the finest talent.” And this talent will appear in many forms: dance, illusion, music from classical to country and from acoustic to full bands, improv shows, circus arts, puppetry, magic shows, mime, opera, musical theater, spoken word, stand-up comedy…this list goes on. The Bennington theater is a 139-seat “black box” theater, which means the stage is on the floor, enveloped by the surrounding seats. Carlon says this creates an interactive and intimate space. “Everyone is part of the performance. So, the audience interacts with the comedians or the musicians, and feels as though they are in the play. It is a wonderful setting, and my goal is to bring performances into the theater that capitalize on this amazing opportunity, particularly for audience members.” While the Theater’s new season of events will be announced at the end of January, Carlon has noticed that comedy shows have been an instant success. For this reason, he is excited to announce that comedian, Jackie Fabulous, will be performing at the Theater on January 27th. Ms. Fabulous is an actress and writer whose

Manchester Medical Center Hires New Physician with Patient Satisfaction as Top Priority Kathleen Hawes Vermont News & Media correspondent MANCHESTER — Manchester Medical Center (MMC) Primary Care is proud to announce its newest team member, Dr. Mary Katherine (Kate) Howard MD. Dr. Howard has been BoardCertified in Family Medicine for over a decade. She received her undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Arkansas, after which she completed her Medical Doctorate at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, finishing up her residency in Family Medicine in Pine Bluff, AR. She spent the first seven years as a Family Medicine physician in Arkansas seeing patients that range from newborn to geriatric before moving to Vermont in 2020. She continues her work as a family medicine physician in southern Vermont and will be joining Manchester Medical Center as of March 2024.

“I’m so excited to have the opportunity to work with Manchester Medical Center and assist in developing their primary care program,” Says Dr. Howard.” I am hoping it leads to more informed patient care and education, which will ultimately result in a healthier Vermont.” The rest of the MMC Team is thrilled to welcome Dr. Howard as she will be crucial to the future development of the practice, especially now, as they expand their services to help the greater needs of the community. MMC Founders, Dr. Thomas Sterling and Dr. Janel Kittredge both live in the Manchester VT area, a place where the two closest hospitals are both more than 20 miles away. It did not take long for them to recognize the area’s dire need for urgent medical care and so, in 2019, they opened their own facility: Manchester Medical Center (MMC) Urgent Care. Since then, they have strived to improve healthcare in their community. After operating the Urgent Care Center for four years, MMC has expanded, now offering primary care services, and making patient satisfac-

Dr. Sterling and Dr. Kittredge understand that the steady decline of health insurance reimbursements paired with increased costs of labor and supplies has put pressure on many primary care providers to see an unrealistic number of patients per day. They also know it’s the patient who bears much of the brunt of this problem; long wait times and increased healthcare costs, to name a few. With patient satisfaction as their goal, Kittredge and Sterling chose to make MMC a membership-based program. The cost? $480 dollars per year ($40 per month), which is about the same as one take-out meal a month, or two cups of Dunkin’ a week. The benefits? Dramatically reduced wait times and increased flexibility with scheduling. Patients will also get increased access to their providers, which means more facetime with physicians and nurse practitioners, making appointments relaxed, unhurried, and thorough. In sum, although differing in many ways from a concierge program, a membership program allows the practice to limit

The Primary Care office has continued to grow with the hiring of two family nurse practitioners, Lia Braico, FNP-BC and Morgan Bazyk FNP-CB. MMC also has onsite laboratory services and onsite x-ray, which means less travel for patients requiring those services. The practice is willing to train medical assistants and is always on the lookout for Certified Paramedics that want to work in a clinical setting. Currently, MMC seeks interns at both the college and high school level curious about the field of medicine and interested in working alongside their team towards a healthier Vermont.

sticking with the client every step of the way. “We have to open their eyes so they can see the bigger picture and know what’s in their best interest,” she said. Agents have received testimonials referring to effi cient and frequent communication, and sharing resources for lenders and lawyers, as well as working with buyers out of state or during a pandemic. While Brattleboro doesn’t have the attraction of a vacation lake or immediate access to mountains for skiing, it’s a beautiful area for empty nesters or first-time homebuyers, and that’s what Brattleboro Area Realty has seen over the last few years. The agents are committed to the close, the search for a dream home and getting clients what they need. It’s the reason Lewis chose to work at Brattleboro Area Realty over other agencies just 35 years ago.

BRATTLEBORO — Since 1973, Brattleboro Area Realty has been leading in the matchmaking game when it comes to real estate. Christine “Chris” Lewis jumped into the market just 15 years later with no experience and was the only woman in her offi ce at the time. Now, she’s one of a dozen agents with a career in real estate serving Vermont and New Hampshire. “We really try very hard to be a full-service agency and work extra hard to serve the clients and give them what they need,” Lewis said. Buying or selling a home is no easy feat, especially when a lot of money is on the table. Brattleboro Area Realty has the knowledge and patience to help clients get the best offer and the ideal dream home. Erich Hoyer co-founded the agency

for 38 years before passing in 2020. Lewis said that he always stressed the value of education and working fairly. Real estate agents are not trained inspectors, but after a few years, they know what details to pay attention to and that skill is not common. “We can make them aware of the items that we need them to look at and be conscious of,” Lewis said. “I was happy when our new motto became ‘Raising the Bar,’ because real estate has been referred to as an easy job, but it’s very complicated when you’re handling personalities and intense emotions.” First-time home buyers can have countless questions, and the process isn’t seamless. That’s why Brattleboro Area Realty is recognized for effi ciency, support and hands-on processes. There are also hiccups that can arise during the buying or selling process, and Lewis can speak on

Acupuncturist hits sweet spot with new clinic Chris M ays Vermont News & Media correspondent BRATTLEBORO — Confluence Acupunc-

ture is the next logical step for owner Stefan Grace, who has been a licensed acupuncturist for more than a decade and has practiced Chinese medicine for more than 15 years. “I’ve worked in many different clinics,” he said, “so this is my first solo venture running my own clinic.” Grace opened Confluence Acupuncture on Technology Road Drive in Brattleboro about a year ago. So far, he said, it’s going well. Previously, Grace rented a room at a naturopathic clinic on Western Avenue in Brattleboro for about five years. He said the move allowed him to expand his business. Looking around, Grace noticed a number of acupuncturists operating in Brattleboro. But nobody was running what he considers a public-facing clinic with signage, advertising and multiple treatment rooms. “I felt like there was a place for it,” he said. “I think that there have been those kinds of clinics in Brattleboro before but not in the six years that I had been living here.” Grace estimates 95 percent of the people he sees are experiencing some kind of pain — sometimes acute, sometimes chronic. That pain involves backs, necks, shoulders, knees and feet. Sometimes, it’s related to arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Acupuncture also is used to treat gastrointestinal, gynaecological and fertility issues, post-traumatic stress disorder, musculoskeletal injuries and internal disorders. With an aging population, Grace stressed the importance of people staying as mobile as possible as late into their lives as they can. “This has become a big, big part of my

clientele,” he said. Through martial arts, Grace became involved in learning about Chinese medicine, herbal medicine and manual therapies. After getting hit by a car and breaking his hand, he could no longer work in carpentry for any extended period of time. As a result, Grace started to receive a lot of acupuncture. “I was so impressed with how effective it was in treating really acute injuries like that,” he said. With plenty of time on his hands, Grace decided he should give acupuncture school a try. He was living in Oregon at the time and ended up enjoying the work. A little more than six years ago, Grace moved back to Vermont to be closer to family. He found space with the clinic in Brattleboro. In his own venture, Grace has been able to grow his clientele. He said he’s putting in a lot more resources into advertising and regularly posting on social media. “It’s definitely paying off,” he said. “I definitely have seen a pretty significant uptick in the number of new people coming through the door, especially in the fall. I was here spring and summer, and things were going pretty well. And then in the fall, things really took off for me so I’m hoping to continue that trend.” Confluence Acupuncture has four rooms with equipment to accommodate different kinds of pain. The clinic is handicap accessible and Americans with Disabilities Act compliant, with wide hallways and doors to make navigation easier for people with wheelchairs and walkers. One of Grace’s priorities for picking out a property had been physical accessibility. He also wanted to make the environment familiar to people, so the clinic has a similar style to a medical provider’s office. “I think for some people, it’s a stretch to be coming to get acupuncture,” he said. “They’ve never tried it before. They don’t know what it is.” Grace said he’s noticing an increasing number of doctors are recommending acupuncture. Some patients have been going to the emergency room and taking painkillers but the pain subsists, while others have a chronic problem that no other medical care has successfully treated. Needles used for acupuncture are

“very tiny,” Grace said. He described the feeling of the prick as “a very minor insect sting when it first goes in, then after that almost nothing.” “Sometimes people feel like a little bit achy around the site of the insertion site or a traveling sensation,” he said. “But for the most part, you don’t feel much.” An initial appointment is an evaluation lasting 15 minutes followed by treatment for one hour. Grace develops a plan, which usually includes about 10 treatments lasting an hour each and ideally occurring weekly. “For the most part, the norm is that there’s a cumulative effect to it and it kind of stacks up week after week after week,” he said. Treatments are $110 each and some insurance policies cover them. Grace called Chinese medicine “the broader kind of umbrella of all of these different therapeutics.” “Acupuncture is the one that’s become the most well known in this country,” he said. Grace said he might suggest exercises or a stretching regimen in a way that might be reminiscent of physical ther-

apy. Manual therapy is somewhere in between physical therapy and massage therapy, and could include the use of cups. In the clinic, many herbs are in jars on shelving. They can be used in “a variety of fashions,” Grace said. More than 100 raw herbs are part of the collection. Grace said they’re the actual roots and barks of the herbs, which are prepared like tea in formulas he develops. More than 100 granulated herbs also are in the collection. Grace said they “have already been cooked like a tea and then dried on to a powder substrate, which is mixed with water for drinking.” Grace said patients have to be consistent with taking the herbs in order to see results. To make it easier, he offers for a staff member to make the formula and prepare it. Six packs of jars holding herbal formulas can be picked up at the clinic then dropped off for refills. Patients are advised to drink one jar a day. Grace also started to teach gentle therapeutic exercises known as Qigong in his office at 9 a.m. Tuesdays.

The Dorset Players stand as a testament to the enduring cultural significance of community theater. The Players were founded in the spring of 1927 when Dorset residents and performing arts enthusiasts Dr. and Mrs. Edward Goodman found that there was enough local interest in the theatrical performance to produce their own play. “In April of that year, a three-act play entitled “39 East” was presented at the Dorset Town Hall,” explained Paul Michael Brinker, the business manager for the Dorset Players. “It was received with great enthusiasm, and that success led shortly to the formation of an organization called the Dorset Players.”

After 1946, the Players continued to grow, expanding their influence in Vermont and beyond. “In 1949, the Players began a long and fruitful association with the Caravan Theatre and Fred and Pat Carmichael. The first of many original plays by Fred Carmichael, The Green Snowman, was produced in 1953.” The Players had become a cultural institution in the small town of Dorset, and throughout the second half of the 20th Century they continued to spread their passion for the performing arts across the Green Mountain State.

Knowing they couldn’t realistically continue putting on performances at the Town Hall, the Players opened their very own Playhouse on July 2, 1929. The Dorset Playhouse quickly became a hub for artistic expression in Southern Vermont. The Players continued to flourish through the 1930s, but the advent of World War II halted their productions until 1946 when Paul Stevenson joined the group.

A lot has changed since 1976, but the Players continue to captivate audiences with regular productions. In 1999, the Playhouse underwent a $3 million renovation to improve sightlines, install more comfortable seating, and add better restroom facilities and an all new rehearsal space. Rounding out a triumphant 96th season, the Dorset Players are proud to present “Rabbit Hole,” the Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning play by David Lindsay-Abaire, directed by Tom Ferguson, and the iconic musical “9 to 5” by Dolly Parton & Patricia Resnick, directed and choreographed by Christy Vogel.

Chris Mays Brattleboro Reformer TOWNSHEND — Since master craftsman Greg Durocher started Roll’en Homes LLC about five years ago, his dream has panned out way beyond what he initially envisioned. Roll’en Homes custom designs and builds tiny homes on wheels, catering to each client’s specific needs and aesthetics. The company’s motto is: “You dream it, we build it!” “We pride ourselves on our topquality products and provide our services throughout the Northeast,” Durocher said. “We work closely with our clients through every step it takes to provide our clients with their own perfect tiny home.” The company brings creativity, problem-solving skills and dedication to each project. Durocher’s first year in business was a bit challenging as he hurried to get fully functional homes built to show off the product. “Once we got a few of those models under our belt that first year and gave people the visual of what I had in mind, it took off,” he said. “Seeing the craftsmanship we put into our builds really sparked business for us.” At the end of 2019, Durocher had one employee. At the time of the interview, he was up to eight and seek-

business is our customization.” Having constructed 35 homes at Roll’en Homes, the layout and aesthetics of each one is different. Customers are largely involved in designing their projects. “Everyone has their own tastes and needs, and that’s what we cater to,” Durocher said. “A lot of companies won’t do that.” Prices for each build range from $60,000 to $180,000. Durocher said some customers are seeking highend looks, and others are more economical and want the homes to be “bare bones.” Durocher expects to see projects get more luxurious over time, as they have since he started. An annual open house event the first weekend in May tends to generate a lot of interest. The design process typically takes a week or two to complete. Once a sales agreement is struck, the tiny homes take about four to six months to be made. Roll’en Homes LLC is located at 1233 Route 30 in Townshend and open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment Saturday and Sunday. A spike in sales at Roll’en Homes over the years is partially attributed to the lack of affordable housing and apartment units especially in Vermont. Also, a new state law encourages the creation of accessory dwelling units (ADUs). Tiny houses built by Roll’en Homes classify as ADUs. “Our housing got bought out so this was a great alternative for families to be able to afford something still,” Durocher said. Customers are buying property where the tiny homes can go. Others are putting them adjacent to their homes and renting them out. Offices also are being created in the structures. A couple of tiny houses used by customers for quarantining during the COVID-19 pandemic are now being rent out as short-term rentals, bringing in as much as $150 to $250 a night. “Tiny isn’t necessarily tiny,” Durocher said. “We do 400-square-foot homes all the way up to 500-squarefoot homes. So they’re becoming fairly big now.” Tiny houses are easier to maintain and cost less on heating, Durocher said. “I think the carbon footprint and the efficiency of these homes are unbeatable for the space that we’re giving,” he said. “Another thing that drives our

Located at 580 Canal St, this hidden gem offers an enchanting shopping experience for those seeking one-of-a-kind gifts, décor, and delectable local delights. The journey of Vermont Gift Emporium began as a festive pop-up in December 2021 and took a decisive turn in March 2022 when it was officially formed as an LLC. Exploring the Legacy: Vermont Veterans’ Home Ahmad Yassir Vermont News & Media correspondent BENNINGTON — Nestled in the heart of

Bennington, Vermont, stands a historic institution that serves as a testament to the unwavering dedication and care for our nation’s heroes. Established in 1884, the Vermont Veterans’ Home transcends being merely a facility; it is a haven entrusted to the Vermont Veterans’ Board of Trustees, encompassing 84 acres of picturesque landscapes. Far more than a healthcare facility, it is a community that warmly embraces those who have bravely served our country. Melinda Crowl, the Marketing Coordinator, expresses, “This state entity, run by dedicated Vermont state employees, caters to a noble clientele - veterans, their spouses, and gold star parents.” At the core of its services lies a commitment to providing comprehensive care. The facility offers skilled nursing care, inpatient and outpatient acute and sub-acute rehabilitation services, therapeutic activities, and respite care. What sets it apart is the certified Alzheimer’s Unit, ensuring specialized care for those facing cognitive challenges. The Vermont Veterans’ Home has earned well-deserved recognition on the national stage. U.S. News & World Report, a reputable authority in healthcare, recently honored it as a Best Nursing Home for 2024. Attaining this prestigious recognition is no small feat, with only 19% of skillednursing facilities across the nation achieving this status. However, what makes this home truly special extends beyond the accolades. It is the stories within its walls, the shared experiences of service and sacrifice. The Vermont Veterans’ Home is a living memorial, preserving the legacy of those who have served our nation with pride. As you explore this haven, you’ll witness the dedication of its staff, the camaraderie among residents, and the sense of honor that permeates every corner. The Vermont Veterans’ Home invites you to step into a space where history meets compassionate care. For those seeking more than just

the threads of patriotism – the Vermont Veterans’ Home beckons. It’s a place where residents find solace in shared memories, and the commitment to service echoes through the ages. In your journey through Vermont, make a stop at 325 North St, Bennington, VT 05201. Discover more than a facility; uncover a home that honors and cherishes the heroes who have shaped our nation. The Vermont Veterans’ Home awaits, extending an invitation to explore its legacy and embrace the spirit of service that defines its existence. Melinda Crowl aptly captures the essence, “If you walk around the halls here, you can hear the laughter, and the aides joking with the people and the veterans joking back. Somebody said to me one time that we may not have chandeliers and fancy furniture, but what we don’t have, we make up for in our camaraderie and our community. That laughter and freeness and easiness in the air make up for all that.” For more information about the Vermont Veterans’ Home, visit its website vvh.vermont.gov, and explore job listings and information on benefits at humanresources.vermont.gov/ careers.

In the heart of Wilmington, Vermont, stands a culinary haven known as Robert’s Roadhouse at 4 Old Ark Rd, Wilmington, VT, where precision, passion, and a touch of family history come together to create a dining experience like no other. Owned and operated by Executive Chef Robert F. Seavey Jr., the roadhouse has undergone a remarkable transformation, both in its physical space and culinary offerings. Chef Robert embarked on his journey with Robert’s Roadhouse in June 2022, when he purchased the establishment and dedicated the following months to a comprehensive renovation. The result is a fresh, modern look seamlessly blending with its historical charm. Robert’s touch is evident in every detail, from updated lighting and vinyl plank wood floors to stained glass partitions with original antiques and majestic taxidermy adornments. The building itself, known as the Roadhouse, has been a local landmark for over 40 years. Now, under its third ownership, Chef Robert attached his name to it, giving birth to Robert’s Roadhouse. The new moniker reflects a change in ownership and a culinary evolution that Chef Robert brings to this historical establishment. Chef Robert’s culinary journey began at an early age, honing his skills as a chef since second grade. His professional career led him to become an Executive Chef attending the New York Restaurant School, the Cordon Bleu in Paris, and the Culinary Institute of America. He worked alongside many “seasoned” professionals in the corporate world and finally became

the Executive Chef at Greenwich Hospital in Connecticut for an impressive 16 years. The transition to owning a restaurant wasn’t initially on the cards, but fate had different plans. In 1985, Chef Robert penned a proposal that would set the stage for the roadhouse’s future, and in 2022, that vision came to life. Chef Robert brings diverse culinary influences to Robert’s Roadhouse as a chef with a rich background. The menu reflects an eclectic mix of American fare

with our local VT team: Arianna, Crissy, Avery, Travis, Kathleen, Pete, Ted, and Bern. Also helping out are family friend Jon and cousins Mark, Stephanie, Amy, and David. Grateful for the support of the Deerfield and Wilmington public, Chef Robert emphasizes the importance of community backing. The Roadhouse thrives on the loyalty and encouragement of its patrons, making it a true community-centric establishment. As Robert’s Roadhouse continues to evolve and adapt, Chef Robert remains dedicated to providing an exceptional dining experience. With Rotating specials, themed nights also offering catering tailor-made events that could be either on or off premises and a cozy atmosphere that resonates with locals and visitors, Robert’s Roadhouse is a testament to Chef Robert’s culinary expertise and the warmth of community support. It’s not just a restaurant; it’s a culinary journey guided by passion, history, and the joy of good food shared with great company. Special pasta dishes like Penne alla Vodka, ravioli, and manicotti are on the special menu, along with occasional mussels, clams, shrimp, or scallops, but these change daily. Another signature is Robert’s e Roadhouse Burger, 8 oz of Angus beef with sauteed onion and peppers, jalapenos, bacon, cheddar, and signature BBQ sauce. To round out the offering are seasonal salads, soups, and desserts, and a children’s menu so that everyone in the family can have something to enjoy. Robert’s Roadhouse also offers 14 different Tap regional craft beers and other VT favorites in bottles and cans, as well as a fine wine and a signature seasonal cocktail menu. The success of Robert’s Roadhouse goes beyond its culinary offerings. The welcoming atmosphere, the family-oriented team, and Chef Robert’s commitment to the community cater to a diverse clientele, attracting both locals and tourists. The establishment’s familial roots extend to Chef Robert’s wife, Susan Verille, and her daughters, Michele, Kristen, and Jen, and Robert’s daughter Zoe and son, Jack Seavey, who played a pivotal role in launching the roadhouse. Tammy Gosley first became acquainted with the early childhood education program, Head Start, as a parent. When she walked into the building, she said she was nervous, that she didn’t know what to expect. However, as soon as she began talking with the folks at Head Start, Tammy immediately felt welcome. “It was almost like I was home.” That was over 25 years ago. Tammy’s three boys have since gone through the Head Start program. Nowadays, she is a Lead teacher at Bennington County Head Start, which is just one of the many programs offered through United Counseling Service (UCS) a private, nonprofit community mental health center that has been an essential part of Bennington County’s integrated healthcare system since 1958. With nearly 300 employees, UCS promotes healthy lifestyles through all its programs and offers care at 15 different facilities, including two primary outpatient facilities in Bennington and Manchester. Their programs include outpatient counseling and addiction services, emergency mental health services, extensive rehabilitation services, home and schoolbased services, employment services for people recovering from mental illness or with developmental disabilities, and early childhood services, like Head Start.

Worksite wellness programs are in place to provide opportunities for employees to improve health and happiness, and employer paid health advocates are there to help navigate the sometimes-complicated healthcare system for employees and their families. What Makes UCS stand out: UCS

prides itself on listening to and meeting the changing needs of the community. For example, they now work to integrate clinicians into schools, police departments, and primary care offices. They promote innovative programs such as Equine Assisted Therapy. Integral to UCS, is FAST (Finding Access to Services and Treatment), a “same day” access model that expedites the process of connecting folks with the specialists and treatments they require. They celebrate children and stand with immigrants, refugees, with indigenous peoples, and peoples of all faiths. They support individual families challenged by mental health substance use and developmental disabilities. The agency is a member of Vermont Care Partners and a Center of Excellence, meaning that UCS provides high quality services and customer service, excellent outcomes, easy access, comprehensive care, and excellent value. Most importantly, they are working to build a stronger community by empowering individuals and families to lead healthy and meaningful lives. Joining the UCS Family: Every position at UCS contributes to building a stronger community. And since Tammy has been with UCS, she has worn many hats. She began as a cook, but after three years it was clear she was meant for teaching. She transitioned to classroom assistant, then earned her CDA. After going through the Teach Program, getting her Associated Degree, and doing her apprenticeship, Tammy now holds a BA and her teaching license. “It was a journey,” she says. “But I’m exactly where I should be.” In addition to doing work that makes her proud, there are other perks that come with working in the UCS family: Generous retirement plans, a choice of three different health insurance options, dental and vision plans, paid time off/sick

Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Vermont, the Brattleboro Retreat is a renowned mental health treatment center. With a rich legacy of innovation that spans decades, the Retreat has been at the forefront of providing comprehensive and compassionate care to individuals facing mental health challenges. While the hospital strives for excellence in patient care, they are equally committed to the well-being and professional development of their staff. The hospital’s interdisciplinary approach brings together clinical and non-clinical healthcare workers in a dynamic environment where ideas f lourish and innovations thrive. Everyone plays a vital role in creating a compassionate and supportive community. Currently, the Retreat is hiring clinical and non-clinical professionals to help make a positive impact on the lives of people who struggle with mental health. They offer competitive wages and provide opportunities for continuous learning and development that include options for tuition reimbursement. In addition, the Retreat promotes schedules conducive to a healthy work/life balance, with three 12-hour shifts and generous shift differentials for inpatient work. It is a workplace that celebrates the unique perspectives that each team member brings to the table.

Why Vermont: Beyond the rewarding work at the Retreat, Vermont offers a lifestyle that blends tranquility and adventure. Brattleboro, a charming town known for its vibrant arts scene and welcoming community, provides an ideal backdrop for exploring farmers’ markets, hiking picturesque trails, and enjoying the warmth of a close-knit community. Often hailed as one of the best places to live, Vermont boasts a quality of life that extends beyond the workplace. With its commitment to sustainability, a plethora of outdoor activities, and a thriving cultural scene, the Green Mountain State ensures a balanced and enriching lifestyle for those who call it home. 190 Years of Innovation: Founded in 1834, the Retreat continues to offer the latest comprehensive treatments, including two new therapies for treatment-resistant depression: esketamine and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). These treatments can offer hope for people who have not found relief from other treatments. Esketamine is a new, FDA-approved nasal spray that works quicker than other existing depression medications, targeting different chemical pathways than typical antidepressant drugs. The second treatment, TMS is a non-invasive method of stimulating the brain with powerful magnetic fields. It is believed to modulate brain activity in regions associated with mood regulation and is considered a well-tolerated option for people with treatment-resistant depression.

In response to the pandemic-related rise in mental health issues among healthcare providers, the hospital has also launched the Healthcare Professionals and First Responders Program. This program offers a telehealth intensive, shortterm group-based treatment for healthcare professionals and other frontline workers who struggle with PTSD, depression, anxiety, or stress. From the privacy of their homes, clients have access to a comprehensive team of licensed therapists and psychiatric prescribers. With a variety of inpatient, outpatient, residential, and day programs, the Retreat tries to meet the unique needs of children, adolescents, and

adults. They also have specialty programs serving the LGBTQ+ community. Every program and service at the Retreat is dedicated to clients’ mental health and wellbeing. It is a not-for-profit hospital whose employees work together to create a place of safety, dignity, and healing. They are always on the look-out for new team members wishing to find their place at the Retreat and make a difference. After launching as a weekly newsletter in July, GreenMountain Cannabis News has sought to cover every angle of the budding industry of its namesake. “Vermont News & Media saw this as an opportunity to become a centralized informational source for all things cannabis related that would encompass the entire state,” said Jordan Brechenser, publisher of VNM and GreenMountain. “There was such an appetite for this type of information and content, we decided early on to not set our sights around our footprint of Southern Vermont and to make this a statewide venture.”
