A full-time Lee resident since 2013, Peter and his wife quickly became active in town life. As chair of the Lee Greener Gateway Committee, he has led projects ranging from roadside cleanups and pollinator gardens to food waste composting in schools and expanded zero-waste efforts during Founders Weekend. He also played a key role in the adoption of Lee’s plastic bag and polystyrene bylaws. Reflecting on the honor, Peter notes that he sees it as recognition for the entire Committee, and adds, “Lee’s strength lies in its can-do spirit and the dedication of its people. The commitment of Lee’s residents, organizations, and businesses says so much about our shared values.”

Peter’s local contributions build on a career devoted to meaningful service, from Peace Corps work and earthquake relief in Peru to leadership roles in environmental stewardship, behavioral healthcare, affordable housing, alternative energy, and education. His dedication to both his community and his profession exemplifies the spirit of Lee Founders Weekend.

LEE FOUNDERS WEEKEND

Fri, Sat, Sun | Sept 19, 20, 21, 2025

Lee Founders Weekend brings community, local business and fun for all

Each September, the town of Lee pauses to honor its past while celebrating its present. Founders Weekend, running September 19–21 this year, is more than just a festival — it’s a three-day gathering that unifies residents, spotlights local commerce and helps nonprofits and organizations build stronger ties with the community.

“Founders Weekend is one of my favorite times of year in Lee,” says Alexandra Heddinger, Executive Director of the Lee Chamber of Commerce. “It’s a chance to celebrate our local businesses, bring neighbors together and create fun experiences for families and visitors alike. Beyond the festivities, it gives community organizations and nonprofits a valuable opportunity to showcase their work, connect with people and be part of the town’s spirit of collaboration and pride.”

The weekend begins Friday evening with the Taste of Lee, a downtown tradition where restaurants and eateries showcase their best offerings. Once appetites are satisfied, the focus shifts skyward with a community fireworks display lighting up the night.

Saturday is the busiest day of the celebration. The morning kicks off with the Wildcat Main Street Mile, followed immediately by the Founders Hometown Parade. Floats, performers and civic

pride fill Main Street, setting the tone for a day full of activities. Visitors can explore the Craft and Vendor Fair — altogether more than 100+ vendors across the 3 days and various locations — browse antique fire trucks and classic cars or enjoy live music from groups like the Lucky Bucket Band, the Adamsville Ancients and the Berkshire Rhythm Keepers. Families will also find plenty to do, with children’s programming the Athletic Field, including a skateboard competition, obstacle courses and performances from local entertainers.

Fan favorites return once again, including the Slider Cook-off Competition, the Sons and Daughters of Italy Grinder and Cookie Sale and the Old-Fashioned Meeting House Supper. For those interested in history, cemetery tours by the Lee Historical Society and guided tours of the Congregational Church offer insight into Lee’s heritage and architecture.

New additions this year expand the weekend’s reach. Sunday’s schedule features a Dog Parade and Costume Contest, along with a new Corn Hole Tournament designed to draw families, pet lovers and those looking for a little friendly competition. The event closes with the beloved Rubber Duck Race on the Housatonic River, a quirky tradition

that brings smiles to spectators young and old.

The Chamber also announced that Peter Hofman has been named this year’s Parade Marshal. Hofman, who retired to Lee in 2013 after years of “culture weekends” in the Berkshires, has become a cornerstone of the town’s environmental and civic life. As chair of the Lee Greener Gateway Committee, he has spearheaded roadside cleanups, food waste composting programs, pollinator gardens and water bottle filling stations, while championing the town’s plastic bag and polystyrene bylaws.

“Founders Weekend is by far the most intensive and exhausting undertaking we have every year, one that we’re proud to say seems to make a difference,” Hofman reflected. “Having that recognition from the Chamber means so much to each of us.”

Hofman’s leadership has been recognized with the Alan Silverstein and Laura Dubester Award for Community Environ-

mental Leadership from the Center for EcoTechnology. In addition, the Greener Gateway Committee was named the Chamber’s Volunteer of the Year in 2016. His work, both locally and through a career spanning Peace Corps service, behavioral healthcare, housing, alternative energy and education, reflects the same commitment to meaningful service that Lee values.

Behind all the festivities are the dozens of volunteers who make Founders Weekend possible. From serving on the steering committee to handling logistics, organizing the parade and expanding zero-waste initiatives, these community members embody the spirit of the celebration. Their dedication ensures that the weekend is not just a lineup of events, but a true expression of Lee’s hometown pride.

As Heddinger puts it, the festival is about more than entertainment. “We hope everyone will join us September 19–21 to experience the excitement and support the heart of our community.”
