Who was Edith Cowan?

Born in 1861 in Glengarry, near Geraldton, Edith Dircksey Cowan believed education was the key to growth, change and improvement. Edith’s contribution to the development of Western Australian education was significant. She strove to achieve social justice and campaigned for the rights of women, children and families, for the poor, the poorly-educated and the elderly. So it’s fitting that the State’s oldest education institution and newest public university, Edith Cowan University, bears her name.

Our Joondalup Campus is set within beautiful surrounds and its spacious grounds provide a great place for students to study and relax. The campus is identified by its landmark architecture, from the grandness of our Chancellery Building with its elaborate spires, to our vibrant, multi‑hued library and our state‑of‑the‑art buildings for Engineering and Health and Wellness.

Located in the trendy suburb of Mount Lawley and close to Perth CBD, you can’t help but be inspired by the artistic vibe at our Mount Lawley Campus. Offerings are provided in arts, communications, design and teacher education.

Campus life is always buzzing, with our new arts hub, cafés, a sport and fitness centre, and our vibrant Student Village all adding to your university experience.

Ngoolark is a one-stop shop, bringing most student-related services under one roof. This building is an ‘active space’ with a ‘campus street’ and new marketplace, enhancing the vibrancy of the Joondalup Campus. This amazing building has the equivalent of a five‑star energy efficiency rating and complements other award-winning architecture on Joondalup Campus.

ECU South West (Bunbury)

Our Joondalup Campus is part of the Joondalup Learning Precinct, which includes North Metropolitan TAFE and Western Australia Policy Academy. During the summer months, we host the Lotterywest Festival Films at the ECU Joondalup Pines Outdoor Cinema, where moviegoers can enjoy watching a diverse line‑up of international films.

Located two hours south of Perth, our South West Campus in Bunbury is the largest university campus in regional Western Australia, offering small, personalised class sizes and on‑campus accommodation. Offerings are provided in arts, commerce, nursing, social work and teacher education. Engineering students can also study the first year of their course here.

The campus features a café, mini-gym, new crèche facilities, multi‑purpose sports courts, two nursing demonstration wards, science laboratories and a library with 24-hour access to a computer lab. The Bunbury Campus is co‑located with the South Regional TAFE, Manea Senior College and two hospitals. There are also opportunities for international exchange with universities in sister city relationships with Bunbury.

Transport

State-of-the-art facilities

All of our campuses can be accessed conveniently via public transport. Our Joondalup Campus is just a five minute walk from Joondalup train station, plus there is also a free CAT bus service available between the campus and the train station. The Mandurah train line provides even greater ease of access. If you live in Mandurah all you need to do is jump on the train and you will be in Joondalup in an hour or less.

Buses run frequently between ECU Mount Lawley and Perth CBD daily, and there are also direct bus services to many bus stations in the surrounding suburbs. A number of bus routes travel past ECU South West, and a few end at the Bunbury Health Campus, which is just a short walk away.

At ECU, we pride ourselves on our industry‑relevant, world-class facilities, that allow you to experience modern equipment in real‑world environments. Our Joondalup Campus is home to exceptional, purpose‑built health and wellness teaching and research facilities, which include self‑contained simulation suites that have full video recording and interactive audio‑visual technology. Equity, Diversity & Disability ECU’s Equity, Diversity and Disability (EDD) services support students whose studies may be affected by a medical condition or disability, either their own or that of a family member. ECU’s essential orientation program runs for two weeks prior to semester start. We have a range of fun and informative events planned for students during this period which will help you successfully transition and thrive when starting your studies.

Events are offered on the Joondalup, Mount Lawley and South West campuses. You can attend any event location, even if you study at another campus or are doing only online units. You can undertake a range of activities that will give you the skills to adapt to uni life, as well as help you become familiar with your course teaching staff and the support services available.

Career and Leadership Services provide free career counselling and job search support to all current students and alumni up to one year after graduating. Family friendly ECU Joondalup and Mount Lawley campuses have professional, fully accredited and well-equipped childcare centres for children up to five years old. Students will need to check for availability as the centres may have a waitlist. The ECU Sports Centre has a short‑term crèche available in Mount Lawley and Joondalup. It’s open during semester for children aged two months to seven years. The South West Campus runs a similar crèche facility. For children aged six to twelve, the ECU Kids Holiday Program runs during school holidays in Joondalup and Mount Lawley.

Postgraduate Degree Awards There are two main streams of postgraduate programs to choose from – coursework or research.

Coursework

Research

The majority of our postgraduate coursework disciplines offer Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master level courses.

What is a research degree?

Graduate Certificate

A Graduate Certificate is a great way to diversify your current skills and knowledge with courses of only three or four units.

The best part is you can complete them in as little as six months of full-time study. Some Graduate Certificates require a completed Bachelor degree; however, many are available to people who have five years or more of appropriate experience in the field, regardless of your previous qualifications.

A completed Graduate Certificate is a recognised pathway into many other postgraduate coursework programs.

Graduate Diploma

Our Graduate Diplomas comprise eight units in a particular discipline. They are available to you if you have already completed a Bachelor degree in any field and now wish to complete the equivalent of a major in another field, without attempting a second undergraduate degree. They generally entail one year of full-time study.

Master by Coursework

Masters by Coursework degrees are designed to provide a body of knowledge that includes the understanding of recent developments in the discipline and/or area of professional practice, and a knowledge of research principles and methods applicable to the field of work and/or learning.

Course length varies depending on the level of your previous qualification and if that qualification is in the same discipline as the Masters course.

A research degree involves the production of a written body of work that makes an original contribution to knowledge, normally known as a thesis. The research will be developed over a period of time and will involve identifying a topic, developing a proposal, conducting the research and producing the thesis.

For those disciplines with a creative component, the study may result in a creative work (such as a performance or literary item) plus an exegesis (critical explanation or interpretation) to accompany the study and reflect on the creative element. All ECU research degrees require academic supervision, and as such, places are limited.

Master by Research

Masters by Research degrees at ECU may be two years of full-time study depending on the discipline. Most involve one year of coursework or research skills development units before undertaking a year-long research program which results in the submission of a thesis or creative work.

Doctor of Philosophy

The Doctor of Philosophy is a supervised research degree involving a research program culminating in the submission of a thesis or creative work, plus exegesis. Candidates are also expected to participate in seminars and workshops.

The PhD research project should be scoped from the outset as achievable within 3 years (or part-time equivalent), with a maximum course duration of 4 years full-time equivalent.

Candidates undertaking this program may also take an interdisciplinary approach which recognises that solutions to problems often rely on knowledge gained across traditional disciplines. In the selection of fields of research, students are encouraged to examine the broad perspective within which the problem lies and to adopt problem-solving techniques applicable across disciplines.

Doctor of Philosophy (Integrated)

The Doctor of Philosophy (Integrated) is a new pathway to a PhD. This degree can be completed in up to four years, and includes a foundation year of research preparation followed by a three-year research program.

The subjects in the one-year of coursework include generic research training and discipline-specific units. The coursework component provides students with strategies for a successful research journey, appropriate research design and methodology, timely completion, and effective writing and communication skills. Elective units contribute to the skill set required for the thesis or project.

The minimum admission requirement is either a four year Bachelor degree with a weighted average mark of 70% or higher, an Honours degree, a Master by Coursework, or the equivalent in a relevant field from a recognised university.

Professional Doctorate

A professional doctorate combines both coursework and research over three years full-time study. These programs are structured for industry professionals to develop an in-depth understanding of the latest innovation and technologies within their fields.

Applications & Admissions Your application process will differ depending on the postgraduate course you are applying for.

Admission requirements

How to apply

There are minimum admission requirements to enter our postgraduate courses. You must meet these in addition to any special admission requirements for the postgraduate course you intend to apply for. Most postgraduate courses at ECU are available to anyone with a Bachelor Degree, a Bachelor Degree with Honours or equivalent.

Applications for all Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas, Masters by Coursework or other postgraduate coursework courses should be lodged at ecugetready.com.au/apply

Some courses require specific qualifications or specific subjects to have been completed as part of their admission requirements. Many of our Graduate Certificate courses are available to people who have at least five years appropriate professional experience and who do not possess a Bachelor Degree or equivalent. In this circumstance, your eligibility will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

When to apply

For Higher Degree by Research courses, make sure you submit your application early to take part.

Commencement dates for Masters by Coursework, Masters by Research, Professional Doctorates and Doctor of Philosophy (Integrated) are usually late February and late July. To secure your place at ECU, submit your application as soon as possible.

Applications to undertake a PhD will be accepted throughout the year.

Fees & Financial Assistance Tuition fees

Student services and amenities fee

The tuition fees you pay are based on what course and units you choose to study. Fees for 2018 will be available from late 2017. You can estimate the cost of your tuition fees by using our online Fees Calculator available at fees.ecu.edu.au

The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) is a compulsory payment collected by the University for the provision of a range of services and expanded initiatives in areas including health, counselling, sport and recreation, social clubs and societies, student welfare, careers advice, student advocacy, orientation and student representation. The due date for fees is different for each teaching period in which you are enrolled. Under the Research Training Program (RTP), Australian and New Zealand citizens and Australian permanent residents will be eligible for an Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarship covering their tuition fees.

Commonwealth Assistance If you are enrolled in a Full Fee course, you may be eligible to defer the payment of your tuition fees on a FEE-HELP loan. Some postgraduate courses are Commonwealth supported and you are charged only a Student Contribution amount. You may be eligible to defer the payment of this contribution on a FEE‑HELP loan. Other expenses You will be responsible for purchasing text books and any equipment required for your course. The cost of these items varies widely from one course to another. Other expenses that you may incur include food, parking, consumables such as stationery and photocopying, as well as transport costs to and from university, including any work placements or off‑campus activities.

I had searched the UK, America and Australia for a Master of Strength and Conditioning program that allowed me to study online while working full-time and ECU’s course was by far the best choice. The skills and knowledge that I have attained while studying at ECU have been used in every aspect of my day‑to-day role in order to better prepare my athletes. The most beneficial aspect of this course is the staff and lecturers that deliver the units. Highlights ECU to share in $1.9 million Federal Government Funding for Cyber Security awareness and training

PhD student receives New Investigator Award from Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

ECU has been named as one of just two Academic Centres of Cyber Security Excellence in Australia, and the only one in Western Australia. Federal Education Minister Simon Birmingham announced that ECU would share $1.9 million in Federal Government funding to help train the thousands of cyber security professionals required to fill a global skills shortage in the industry. The new funding will also help improve the awareness of cyber security issues among the general public. Since 2001, more than 1000 cyber security professionals have graduated from ECU’s cyber security program.

Fiona Foxall, Director of Undergraduate Studies in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, recently received the Sir Charles Gairdner New Investigator award in the Nursing and Allied Health category. Fiona’s research explores the factors that affect decision‑making and the process of withdrawal of life‑sustaining treatment from ICU patients in a tertiary hospital in Western Australia.

ECU and 2016 Telstra Business Woman of the Year creating world first research ECU’s School of Nursing and Midwifery commenced ground breaking research in partnership with an innovative private company who administer chemotherapy in the home setting.

The research will monitor and record the experiences of patients receiving immunotherapy, a new and exciting area of cancer treatment.

The founder and co-owner of that company, chemo@home, Ms Julie Adams was announced as the WA 2016 Telstra Business Woman of the Year. Ms Adams, a specialist oncology pharmacist, and her business partner Lorna Cook, a registered nurse and ECU alumni, started their innovative cancer service in 2013. Since that time their business has expanded and thrived due to patient demand and their nursing staff now administer almost 300 treatments a month, the research having immediate benefits to the community.

“Since starting my PhD journey, I have loved every minute and get more excited about it every day. This award has put the icing on the cake and I know that my research will have some impact. Thanks to my supervisors Deb Sundin, Mandy Towell and Bev Ewens who have been so supportive and encouraged me to apply for the award and to Di Twigg, Executive Dean of School, for encouraging me to start this journey.”

The research comes under the research group ‘Improving outcomes for adults with chronic health conditions’, which is part of the Centre for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Services Research.

The Sir Charles Gairdner Osborne Park Health Care Group (SCGOPHCG) in collaboration with the Charlies Foundation for Research hosted New Investigator presentations and awards for researchers of the SCGOPHCG.

Solar glass for self-sustaining greenhouses Researchers from the Electron Science Research Institute (ESRI) at ECU’s School of Science, in collaboration with renewable energy company ClearVue Technologies, are building a 300m2 greenhouse using transparent glass that can generate 50 W/m2 of surface area. The solar glass allows 70% of visible light to pass through, while blocking 90% of solar UV and IR radiation. It will provide enough power to run heating or cooling for the greenhouse, as well as desalination to provide water. It could also be tailored to produce the perfect growing conditions for particular plants. The solar glass project has been made possible with the help of $1.6 million from the federal government’s Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) program.

I was excited to find that ECU offered exactly what I was looking for as the units in the Master of Environmental Science program are multidisciplinary, covering areas ranging from science to business. The work-integrated learning also attracted me to this course as this offers a good platform to transition into the working environment and the opportunity to apply the skills that I will have gained. So far, the course has been amazing. The interactive sessions during the lecture seminars have been quite informative and provided a friendly environment to exchange ideas. I have also enjoyed interacting with my course mates who are from different countries and it has been great to share experiences. I am glad I chose to study this course.

Lifetime Achievement Award for outstanding ECU Nursing Professor Congratulations to Professor Di Twigg, Executive Dean, School of Nursing and Midwifery at ECU, who was recently honoured at the WA Nursing and Midwifery Awards. Di was amongst the nominees who were assessed based on a long-standing and extraordinary contribution to the nursing and midwifery professions. A few of the reasons behind Di’s selection to be inducted onto the Lifetime Achievement Honour Roll include her successful career in both health service management at the executive level and as an academic and researcher, her impact professionally at the local, state, national and international level, her leadership contribution more broadly to the profession through involvement in professional colleges, as well as her tenacious and aspirational character.

Reducing the burden of diabetes A project aiming to prevent people at high risk of diabetes from developing the disease has been awarded $1.1 million from the Health Research Council of New Zealand. The research, which will be a collaboration between the University of Otago in New Zealand and Edith Cowan University, will target people diagnosed with prediabetes, a condition that will progress to a diagnosis of diabetes if left untreated.

Researcher Professor Lisa Whitehead from ECU’s School of Nursing and Midwifery, said that a diagnosis of prediabetes created a window of opportunity for behavioural change.

“Being diagnosed with prediabetes can be a shock for people, and we want to see how we can best support people to make the lifestyle changes to prevent them going on to develop type 2 diabetes,” she said. “We will explore the impact of a dietary intervention delivered by nurses in the clinical setting at a time when people may be more open to lifestyle change and help prevent them going on to develop type 2 diabetes.”

As Executive Dean, Di also runs one of the biggest Nursing schools in the country.

ECU scientists establish international partnership for Blue Carbon initiative in Colombian Caribbean The project, co-funded by the European Union, is entitled ‘Mangroves, Seagrass and Local Communities: Development and exchange of experiences of the integral management of biodiversity and its services in the Caribbean region (MAPCO)’. The objective is to evaluate the potential for Colombia to develop a Blue Carbon policy involving numerous socio‑economical benefits through the promotion of knowledge and conservation of marine and coastal biodiversity in the mangrove ecosystems and seagrass of the Colombian Caribbean. ECU’s Dr Oscar Serrano, Prof Paul Lavery, Prof Pere Masque and PhD candidate Cristian Salinas of the Centre for Marine Ecosystems Research (CMER) will play a major role in providing expert advice in developing the project, in addition to use of CMERs analytical facilities to obtain the data required. Other partners include governmental and academic institutions in Colombia and internationally.

Waste heat used to cogenerate power and clean water Researchers at ECU’s School of Engineering have developed an impressive new technology that cogenerates water and electricity from waste heat. The Discharge Thermal Energy Combined desalination (DTECD) technology has special significance within energy intensive industries, such as petroleum and iron ore, that are often located in coastal and arid regions. The system uses waste heat produced by the plant, in conjunction with saline water, to generate power and produce purified water that can be used for cooling or other purposes. Electricity produced by this technology can be used within the plant, thus reducing its reliance on fossil fuels and making it more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Results of this Research Project have already been published in highly regarded scientific journals and it has elicited interest from corporations.

Grant to help improve rehab after brain injury for Aboriginal Australians

Finding Inspiration – Perth’s TEDx Features WAAPA Staff & Students

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Australians are more than twice as likely as non-Aboriginal Australians to suffer a traumatic brain injury or stroke. Despite this, Aboriginal stroke and traumatic brain injury survivors are under-represented in mainstream hospital-based rehabilitation services.

Now an ECU project titled ‘Enhancing rehabilitation services for Aboriginal Australians after brain injury’ is aiming to address this imbalance after receiving a $900,000 grant from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

Led by Professor Beth Armstrong and the ECU Speech Pathology team, the grant will allow a team of researchers, health service providers and industry partners to develop and implement a culturally-secure intervention package for Aboriginal people.

It aims to enhance their rehabilitation experience and engagement with rehabilitation services, increase the cultural security of rehabilitation services and to ultimately improve quality of life after stroke or traumatic brain injury.

The project is a collaboration with the University of WA and the Western Australian Centre for Rural Health, Monash University, Notre Dame University and the University of Technology Sydney. The project will be carried out in partnership with a number of government and non-government agencies and services.

A violin virtuoso, a singer/songwriter/producer and an electronic music historian who all have connections with WAAPA were invited to be part of TEDxPerth 2016 at the Perth Concert Hall.

Associate Professor Alexandre Da Costa, sessional lecturer Rachel Claudio and PhD student Meg Travers were three of the 14 speakers at TEDxPerth 2016, which was billed as ‘a day of inspirational, stimulating and original ideas from WA’s most original thinkers and doers’. TED is a worldwide phenomenon, covering topics from science to business to global issues in more than 110 languages.

World-renowned concert violinist Alexandre Da Costa, who is WAAPA’s Head of Strings, presented a talk on the role of a performer and artist in today’s society. The Canadian‑born musical superstar has been guest soloist for nearly two thousand concerts and recitals around the world.

Singer/songwriter/producer Rachel Claudio, a freelance lecturer in Creativity at WAAPA, is best known for her work in real-time music production. She uses music technology to create and perform entirely orchestrated songs live and in real time. Rachel is also a composer/arranger/songwriter for major labels, and composer for film and TV scores.

Electronic music historian Meg Travers used her PhD research into ‘ancient’ electronic musical instruments such as the trautonium – the forerunner of today’s synthesizers – to discuss how technology obsolescence impacts the performing arts.

ECU artists continue to shine at Sculpture by the Sea ECU graduate and staff member, Denise Pepper, was awarded the 2017 Western Australian Sculptor Scholarship for her work ‘Leaden Heart’.

The scholarship includes a $10,000 donation to progress her career, and an invitation to exhibit at the revered Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi, in October 2017.

A key figure within ECU’s School of Arts and Humanities, Denise’s sculpture ‘Leaden Heart’, is a strong work that exposes intimate stories from Australia’s convict history.

ECU sponsored the 2017 Sculpture by the Sea and had nine graduates exhibiting. The partnership offers ECU Visual Arts students industry experience at the biggest public sculpture exhibition in the world.

International Postgraduate HR Student wins AHRI Excellence Award

Artworks tell the story of WA’s dark and hidden past

Jenny Marcela Carvajal Espejo is a Master of Human Resource Management graduate originally from Colombia.

Only shortly after graduating in 2017, Jenny was not only offered a position as a HR Professional, she was also awarded the Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI) Prize for Excellence in Postgraduate Human Resource Management. Jenny credits ECU’s culture and supportive lecturers in attributing to success in her studies, with lecturers encouraging diversity and creativity in the classroom.

ECU’s School of Business and Law offers students the opportunity to complete workplace simulated experience and work placements as part of their studies. Jenny completed her Business Practicum unit and was hired by that same company at the completion of her degree.

Jenny also volunteered at a not-for-profit organisation with the desire to implement a research project, which she was also able to apply to an assignment as part of one of her units.

In her project, The Spaces Between Us, ECU Post-Doctoral Research Fellow Dr Amanda Gardiner drew on her PhD research which investigated women who committed infanticide in colonial Western Australia.

Dr Gardiner uncovered more than 55 cases linked to the crime of infanticide that occurred between 1829 and 1901. ”Little documentation survives to provide evidence of the lives of the women who committed these crimes,” Dr Gardiner said.

“Many of the women were not literate and these cases often occurred within narratives of secrecy and abuse of power, compounded by experiences of sexual trauma or indiscretion.

Because of this, their crimes have been submerged under fear and shame.”

During 2016 and 2017, Dr Gardiner worked with six highly respected WA artists to draw out the emotional complexities of her subject. The artists, Sarah Elson, Eva Fernandez, Dr Mace Francis, Simon Gilby, Helen Seiver and Sarah Mills used archival, visual and performing arts research to re-contextualize such cases of infanticide.

Dr Gardiner said through the sculpture, paintings and sound compositions The Spaces Between Us seeks to transcend historical narrative and breathe life into the spaces between what is known and unknown about these women.

“My life is all about art and creativity. It’s what I live for.”

I had always been interested in both fashion and photography, and had heard great things about ECU’s arts and communications programs from my friends and teachers.

ECU’s reputation and flexibility of being able to study both passions at the same time is what made me choose to study here.

Studying at ECU has totally changed my perspective on what design is, techniques we use to communicate, and the practical applications of our work. I’ve learned a range of methods that helped me explore different ways to approach my collection, my research and my interaction with other designers and artists.
