Navy Pier Flyover Construction Update Construction on the Navy Pier Flyover, a new and safer path for biking and walking, is in progress.

The lakefront trail connection from New Eastside to Navy Pier now has scaffolding placed at the junction of Illinois Street and Lower Lakeshore Drive. Users are urged to be cautious and slow down at this bottleneck in the path that is shared by both bicycles and pedestrians. The new path is expected to be complete in 2018.

I used to be a banker, but in the downturn in the mid-90s I decided to move on. I went to work for a valet company that my son was working for, then moved up into management.

Kids get involved with the New Eastside Community

Children get involved with their community as paperboys and girls for the New Eastside Community by handing out newsletters and putting a smile on the faces of passersby.

What techniques do you use to help you remember names and faces?

I use rhymes mostly, in my head rather than out loud, though. If I see someone regularly I will always introduce myself so that I can learn their name.

What happens when you change shift?

Inside they will have a stand-up briefing.

Then when I hand over, I informally give them an overview of what’s going on-any VIP guests, events, etc.

What is the strangest thing that has happened to you while on the job?

Once a guest left in his cab for the airport and completely forgot his wife.

We had to get her in a separate cab to follow him… It would be interesting to see how that ended!

Indulge your primeval urge to start a big fire outside to cook

your meal! Gas grills are permitted on most apartment balconies in the New Eastside. Propane tanks must be stored outside and items on your balcony should be secured so that they can’t fall off. Barbecuing in the parks is only allowed in th designated areas. The 12 Street Beach by the Adler Planetarium offers some great spots to grill. If you are craving a flame-grilled burger and don’t want to do it yourself, pick one up at Mariano’s, where the outdoor grills are open 11AM – 7PM every weekday, weather permitting.

On the menu: burger with or without cheese ($6), Italian sausage ($6), portabella with vegetable and goat cheese sandwich ($8).

fishing in the lake. There are so many water activities to choose from that are only five minutes from the New Eastside. Swim in the lake by the wall at Ohio Street Beach, where lanes are zoned and a lifeguard is on duty. Remember to swim only in designated areas of the lake. Learn to swim or improve your stroke with private or group instruction at one of the local swim schools: the British Swim School (North Harbor Tower) or Swim With Kathy Chicago (Aqua).

According to the Chicago Park District, dog-friendly areas such as these are the only areas in the city where dogs are allowed to run and play off-leash. FINE DINING in New Eastside –Restaurant Review - By Ophelia Dodds | Staff Writer

III Forks We have been going to III Forks steakhouse for several years and still love it. The food is superb. Although the bread (straight from the oven) is divine, try not to fill up on it, as the portions are huge. An eight ounce steak can usually be shared between two people. The creamed corn side dish is an essential and the roasted brussels sprouts with aioli are to die for. To be honest, you can’t really go wrong with anything here. Desserts are large so I would recommend sharing one among four diners if you have enough space to attempt it. They also have a swank open-air rooftop bar that is open in the summer with a great view of the park With a child: It took us a long time to try this restaurant with our daughter. When we finally did, we were pleasantly surprised. They have a children’s menu that includes things like tenderloin tips, and there is no mac and cheese in sight! Our daughter loved having adult food, and we were really impressed with the whole experience.

Mezcalina Although the decor is beautiful and fun, the tables are too close together to make this anything more than a communal dining experience. I tend to not go here as a couple, mainly because of the close proximity of the tables to one another. They do have a fantastic shrimp dish (Camarones Yucatecos) with mole sauce and rice and vegetables. The Molotes are a really delicious starter.

Interestingly, we discovered that the reason the walls are so vibrant is because the restaurant supports non-profit organizations in Mexico by showcasing the work of Mexican artists.

With a child: This is a fun and vibrant place with lots of interesting options for children who are adventurous eaters. It doesn’t have a kids’ menu, but there are some lovely shrimp and rice options. Our daughter loves the churros for dessert as well!

Yum Cha Dim Sum Parlor This restaurant has a lovely intimate feel even though there are quite a lot of tables.

I have dined there five times already, even though it only opened a couple of weeks ago. Don’t even bother with the main courses, as the dim sum are utterly mouthwatering! With so many great choices, it’s hard to recommend only one or two, but a few of our favorites are: the BBQ pork Bao balls, the Har Gow, the Sui Mai and the Fried Taro Puffs. But really everything is fabulous!

With a child: I wasn’t sure how my daughter would take to the dim sum, and on our first visit she only ate white rice. On our second visit, she tried some crispy shrimp egg rolls, and now she will try a bit of the dim sum. The dishes are a perfect size to share and if you want more you can just add them as you go along.

How it works – Mariano’s Grocery Delivery Service

Do your shopping in store and tell the cashier at check out that you would like your items delivered. Fill out your details on their delivery form and provide a two-hour time window when you will available to receive your items. If your purchase includes perishables, your entire order will be stored in the dairy cooler until delivery time.

They won’t do the shopping for you, and contact details on a new delivery form must be filled out each time, but it is certainly handy when there is just too much to carry.

1. Caffè Rōm @ NE corner Lakeshore East Park. The oldest coffee shop in Lakeshore East serves medium-bodied Italian Caffè Umbria coffee with a fragrant aroma and sweet finish. When I arrived on a Friday night at this Radisson Blu hotel restaurant, I took one look at the crowded bar with blaring music and thanked God that I no longer needed to be part of that scene. Luckily, the restaurant in the upstairs is shielded from the mania, and has some nice, quiet romantic booths with beautiful decor. Serving up Italian fare such as pastas, the usual carne plates, and a good selection of seafood including whole branzino, the food is average but well-priced, and the service is fine.

With a child: This is an easy go-to place for us as a family.

They do a reasonable children’s menu and are flexible about having things “on the side.” The booths are a big help for keeping children contained and it’s always a quick and comfortable meal.

Ophelia Dodds is a self-confessed foodie who spends her weekly date nights with her husband working their way through the acclaimed restaurants of Chicago and anywhere else they happen to visit. During the rest of the week, she prepares finger foods for her three-year-old and spends more time than is healthy on achieving a “rainbow” plate of food for her. She eats out regularly in New Eastside both with and without said preschooler.

2. Mezcalina @ Village Market The Mexican coffee bean has its day at the coffee bar of this restaurant. Most of their coffee comes from the Oaxaca and Veracruz regions (mostly roasted Arabica beans) yielding a golden crema and a flavor full of natural sweetness. Locals vouch for the coffee’s smooth, rich taste and clean finish.

Living in luxury doesn’t have to cost a fortune: Condo-financing options in Lakeshore East

As the housing market stabilizes and sales activity increases, condo-financing options available for starter to luxury buyers prove attractive. More importantly, you do not have to put down 20%, a common misnomer amongst homebuyers.

In April, the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) announced the Welcome Home Illinois Program designed for first-time homebuyers of a primary residence (or those who have not owned a primary residence in the past three years). The statewide program offers the ability to purchase a one-to two-unit property (condos included) with an affordable 30-year fixed interest rate and a forgivable $7,500 grant for down payment and closing-cost assistance. While income and sales price limits may vary by county, in the Chicagoland area an individual or two-family household can make up to $90,960, while a three-plus household may earn up to $106,120 annually to qualify.

Applicants who may exceed income limits for the IHDA program can consider other low downpayment options, including a 3.5% down FHA (Federal Housing Administration) loan up to $365,700 or a 5% down conventional loan up to $417,000. Those with military benefits can use a VA (Veterans Administration) loan and secure 100% financing up to $417,000. Conventional, FHA and VA buyers are not restricted by income limits, but might be subject to monthly and/or up-front mortgage insurance, as in the case of conventional or FHA, or a funding fee with VA loans.

Those purchasing luxury units have some unique options as well. Qualified buyers can secure mortgages up to $850,000 with 10% down payment. A little-known fact is that those with VA benefits have tremendous purchasing power. Armed services borrowers can secure single-loan financing up to $1,500,000.

Staging your home to sell this summer

selling season for real estate, I would like to use this edition to explain the features and benefits of staging your home.

The aim of staging a house is to make it appear larger, brighter and more inviting. If done right, staging provides an atmosphere that appeals to many people and allows folks the ability to visualize living there. Home stagers are experts at showcasing the positive while camouflaging the negative aspects of a home’s interior.

Staged houses sell faster. According to Barb Schwarz, president of the International Association of Home-Staging Professionals, a home staged by an IAHSP member is on the market for an average of 29 days or less, compared to 145 days for non-staged homes.

How much does it cost to stage a house? The cost of having your house staged professionally depends on the size of the house and how extensive the staging. Professional home-staging services can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars. The good news is that $550 spent on staging can net approximately $2,000 in a sales price.

Cleaning and removing clutter is the foundation of successfully staging a house to sell. No matter how much pretty stuff you move into the home, it won’t look attractive unless it’s sitting on a clean stage. Tips for using and choosing the right sunscreen -By Dr. Toral Patel, MD | D&A Dermatology If you have any sunscreen left over from last year, it’s probably expired!

It’s tempting to use up those half-empty bottles of sunscreen from last season, but the shelf life of these products is typically only about a year, so check the expiration date before you throw that bottle into your beach bag. Something else to consider: leftover sunscreen from the previous year means it wasn’t applied sufficiently. A typical sunscreen bottle is about six ounces, so if it’s applied as recommended (one ounce per whole-body application, re-applied every two hours), one bottle shouldn’t even last a whole week!

Choose a sunscreen with SPF 45-50, which indicates it provides “broad spectrum” protection.

The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is a measure of UVB protection; these rays have been implicated in sunburn and skin cancer development. SPF 30 is sufficient for year-round sun protection, but for prolonged outdoor activity, bump that number up to 45-50. The SPF number only refers to protection from UVB rays and not UVA rays, the latter of which have been associated with aging of the skin and skin cancer. A sunscreen that offers “broad spectrum” protection indicates that it has been shown to protect against both UVA and UVB rays.

Read the ingredient label carefully.

There are two types of sunscreens: chemical blockers and physical blockers. There is a higher chance of developing irritation and allergy to some of the chemical sunscreens. If you have sensitive skin or are looking for a more natural product, look for sunscreens that contain only physical blockers (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) as their active ingredients.

Don’t rely on the sunscreen in your makeup.

Many foundations and powders list a small amount of sun protection (typically SPF 8-15) on their labeling.

Not only is this amount of protection insufficient (and not broad spectrum to protect against UVA rays), the majority of makeup gets wiped off during the course of the day, leaving skin even less protected. Some tinted moisturizers tend to contain higher SPF, but re-application over these products is still important to maintain all-day sun protection. Powdered sunscreens (like the Colorescience Sunforgettable Brush) are a great option for re-application for women who want to keep their makeup intact.
